Reunion
Scott sighed as he followed Professor Xavier into the X-Jet; they were going to try to get a new young mutant to attend the institute. This felt unusual because they had not found this mutant on Cerebro. They had gotten a call from an old friend of the professor that there was a young mutant at a mall that might be a good candidate for the school. Apparently the situation presented as urgent because normally the professor would take the time to find the young mutant on Cerebro so they would at least know what they were getting themselves into, but he didn't this time.
"Professor do we have any idea who this mutant is?" Scott asked as Kitty Pryde rushed up the ramp to the jet.
Initially it was supposed to be Storm that was to join them on this trip but Jawn, Charles's nephew, interfered and told them that he believed it would be better for Kitty to go. With Jawn's abilities they had all learned it was best not to question him in these situations.
"No… but we must hurry." Charles replied as Scott and Kitty strapped in for takeoff. "Our informant will be waiting for us at the entryway nearest the mutant's location when we get there. Fair warning he is a bit eccentric, his sense of humor takes some getting used to."
They got to the mall and saw a man with dark red, almost black hair, pale skin and blue eyes waiting for them. It was clear he had been there a while, but he also understood it would take time for them to get there.
"Eli this is Scott and Kitty… Scott, Kitty this is my old friend Eli Gramick." Charles said.
The man smiled and gave a polite bow.
"It's nice to meet you, follow me." Eli said then as they were on their way he turned to Charles with a knowing smirk.
"So, which one of them flew the jet?" he asked.
"What makes you think I didn't?" Charles asked with a smirk.
"C'mon, Charles, why would you do it when you could have a student do it for you."
"You're mocking me, aren't you?"
"Just a bit…"
"Well, that aside, exactly what happened?" Scott asked.
"Well today was my day off, so I thought I'd catch a movie and it got halfway through the film when suddenly the movie was over, and I had no idea what had happened. Imagine my surprise when I sensed a young girl leaving the theater in quite a rush." He paused "I tried to follow her, but she ran in there." He pointed towards a ladies room "I would have followed her in, but you can imagine how that would look."
Kitty reached for the doorknob to find it locked.
"Okay that kind of explains like why Jawn said I should be the one to come and not Storm." Kitty muttered then phased through the door.
"Hey… like… you don't need to be afraid, we're here to help you." Kitty said.
"How… how did you get in here?" The girl's fear filled voice broke Kitty's heart.
"It's my power, I can, like, walk through walls." Kitty explained gently "Why don't you come on out and talk with us… we can like so help you out."
Kitty stayed back as a young blonde exited the handicapped stall, her eyes were red and puffy from crying. Kitty felt so bad for this girl she couldn't imagine coming into her powers in the middle of a theater full of people. Couldn't imagine how alone and afraid she must have felt even surrounded by people.
"Come on, like, it's okay." Kitty said encouragingly "I'm Kitty, what's your name?"
"Kathryn but my… my friends call me Kathy."
Charles, Scott, and Eli were discussing the film when Kitty and Kathy exit the bathroom.
"I was kind of disappointed I think I'm going to go see how it ended…" Eli said then he saw the girls and decided against it "On second thought, I just might stick around, this just got interesting.
Charles and Scott turned around to see Kitty and the new mutant exit the bathroom.
"Kathy this is…"
"Daddy…" fresh tears fell down Kathy's cheeks as she met Charles's eyes then ran to him and was brought into his embrace.
"Um like… wait is she really like the professor's daughter?" Kitty said in surprise. She had seen the photo of a young girl in the professor's office but had never asked who she was. Now she recognized the new mutant as the child in the photo.
"Yes… she is." Scott said then pulled Kitty aside to explain exactly what happened that led to her not knowing about Kathy.
"It's okay, my child, I'm here now." Charles said softly. "What happened?"
"I don't know, I was watching the movie when… when a jump scare happened and suddenly I noticed I was the only one moving." She explained her voice trembling as badly as her hands.
"So that's what happened." Eli muttered "I was wondering why the movie ended like that, I was about to demand my money back."
This outburst earned a glare from Charles that silently screamed 'shut up'.
Eli put his hands up and said "Okay… sorry."
"I'm sorry." Kathy said hiding her face in Charles's shoulder. "I got scared."
"Don't feel bad the movie hardly had a plot, the hero could hardly be called a hero and don't get me started on the villain I've seen better in a Walt film." Eli assured her.
Kathy looked at him with a watery smile that seemed to wordlessly thank him for protecting her from getting in trouble for sneaking into an R-rated movie.
"Has this happened before?" Charles asked.
"No… this is the first time." She said but Charles wasn't so sure.
"Dad… can I go home… to the mansion?" She asked.
"Of course you can if that is what you wish. All you had to do was call and ask and I would have come and gotten you." He said gently tightening his embrace "Given the circumstances I think that would be for the best you come home."
"Yes, dad… I want to go home." She said wiping her nose with her hand.
Scott walked over and handed her some paper towels that he had retrieved from the men's room after he brought Kitty up to speed on what was going on.
"Thanks Scott." She said.
"Okay we will go to the school and get you withdrawn." Charles said gently "We will be taking our leave now, Eli so you can go catch your film."
"Never mind the movie this was so much better." Eli smirked "I think I'll come with you."
"Okay, you can come with us… that is if you agree to take a position at the school."
Eli looked at his watch "Wow… took you a whole fifteen minutes to get to that."
"So are we in agreement."
Eli mulls over it for a few minutes.
"I'm in…" Eli reached out for a handshake but retracted it "but I am not, under any circumstance, joining the X-Men, is that understood!"
"Yes, that is more than fair." Charles replies and they finally shake hands.
"Um… like did we just get a new student and a new teacher?" Kitty asked.
"Looks like it." Scott replied.
Meanwhile, Jawn and Kurt were sitting outside waiting for the jet to return.
"I don't get why you're so excited, Jawn, this is just another student." Kurt said in confusion.
Jawn looked at him.
"Trust me it's going to be a real surprise when they get here."
"So, you know who it is?" Kurt asked.
"Maybe…" Jawn smirked.
"Stop with the 'man o' mystery' act and tell us already… jeez yer bein' annoying." Rogue commented from behind them.
"Sorry I'm not at liberty to say."
"Dang it Jawn, yer worse than blue boy over here!" Rogue groaned giving her brother a gentle shove.
"Hey," Kurt snapped "not fair!"
"Sorry, but I can tell you this it is a pleasant surprise."
Rogue and Kurt kept pressing for answers and Jawn finally broke down and said, "I can't tell you who the new student is, but we are getting a new teacher."
"What yer not serious!" Rogue said in surprise.
"A new teacher… that is unexpected."
As they were talking the X-Jet landed and the passengers disembarked.
"Here they are… here they are!" Jawn said excitedly.
Rogue watched as they disembarked, and her eyes went wide as they landed on Kathy.
"Oh my God…"
"Who is she?"
"Kurt… this is my cousin… Kathy." Jawn said then ran up to embrace her and she embraced him back at least trying to act happy. "Come on I'll help you unpack."
Jawn could see that Rogue and Kurt had about a million questions each and he gave them a glare that screamed 'Not now' as he walked passed them carrying one of her bags.
They got to her room and put her bags down and he hugged her again in excitement, but he could tell something was wrong. They then unpack her belongings, and he sat down on her bed.
"So… are we going to talk about what happened?" Jawn asked.
"What's there to talk about… I only froze a theater full of people." She replied her voice laced with sarcasm. "Though calling the theater 'full' is giving it far too much credit… there was only like 6 people in there."
"So… what terrified you?"
Kathy snorted softly.
"Better question is what didn't terrify me." She replied turning her back to him "the movie… the fact that it looked like someone had pressed the pause button on real life… take your pick."
"Hmmm… let's see… the fact that it was a rated R movie, the fact that you were supposed to be at school when it happened or the fact that it happened out in public?"
Kathy looked at Jawn in shock.
"How did you know it was a rated R movie?" she demanded.
"Same way I knew you skipped school."
She glared at him.
"You had better not tell dad!'
"Wait… you mean Uncle Charles doesn't know!" he said in shock.
"No, and you had better help me keep it that way!"
"I can't believe this! How does he not know this yet?" Jawn rambled "I have never done this before!"
"You had better not tell him!"
"Oh, I won't but the theater might!" he said holding out her ticket stub "That or the school when they tell him that you missed a class!"
Kathy tries to snatch the ticket stub from him, but he held it out of her reach.
"Jawn Luc…" she said in anger reaching out to try and grab the ticket stub then froze.
-Kathryn, please meet me in my office. There are some things that have come to my attention that we need to discuss- Charles's voice came through Kathy's mind.
"Damn it!" she muttered aloud leaving Jawn with her ticket stub.
"Uh oh…" Jawn said, "Glad that's not me!"
Kathy glared at him then stalked out of her room.
To Be Continued…
