I talked about the last chapter taking a while to get out and then I go and take almost two months on this one. Part of that is me taking two weeks off to play Stellaris. If your not familiar with the game its a grand strategy space simulator. Aside from that I was busy with helping my parents manage a number of outside projects that happen every summer. When you add in that fact I essentially only have three days a week (on a good week) to get any real writing done, cranking out large chapters is going to take a lot of time. Honestly it would have taken longer, but I got some unexpected time off of work. So, I was able to crank this jumbo piece. Oh, boy is it a monster.

I'm half joking, but it is essentially double the length of the previous chapters. I mainly made it this long to see what worked better for chapter lengths. For the purposes of this chapter it worked out fine, but I'll probably only do ones this long for special segments of the story. That way you guys have something to read more often and I don't get burnt out on one chapter. But if you guys prefer these longer chapters let me know.

I'm glad to hear the main complaint with the story so far is just the update frequency. Which I take as a compliment, as it means you all actually want to read my work. I really do appreciate the feedback, especially the speculation/new ideas you guys are coming up with. Gives me inspiration for the story.

Although, I have made a serious mistake as I've now realized. As Goldstar77 has pointed out, I have done something of a disservice. Specifically, chronicling the number of deities Jace has fought. To be precise Jace has fought FOUR deities. Though so far only three have received screen time, even if indirectly. The fourth unnamed deity is the one Jace fought to ascend to a Campione. My intent originally was to build up mystery around the unknown deity. That way when the events of Jace's coronation as a King came to light it would be more 'profound'. Mainly this was because the deity in question has significant importance to the lore and Campione system I'm crafting for the Veneration verse. I didn't want to reveal all the changes at once, so, I kept the deity in question in the shadows. In hindsight, this was a mistake. I should have at least shown the conflict between Jace and the deity. But that's hindsight. I'll have to work with the hand I've dealt myself.

Hopefully, in the end the new lore I'm crafting makes up for the mistake I made. Unfortunately I can't do anymore for the moment than affirm that there was indeed a fourth, technically first, deity Jace slew to become a Campione. But I will show these events in time, that much I promise. I thank you for your patience.

Trueopulence brought up a minor caveat I didn't address in the during the report last chapter. Erica did not mention to be mindful of using women to seduce Jace. It was not on any intentional part of the crafty blond. It was just a mistake on my part. There will almost certainly be lot more of those, so bear with me.

Spoilers:

Regarding the possibility of Asia running into Jace, it will happen. Just not for a while. While I'm somewhat familiar with the timeline of DxD, I don't intend to stick to it. Or use much of the DxD story in Veneration. I'll use some plot elements and arcs, but only to a degree. I'm leaning heavily into Campione(!) plot already as it is, if I do the same with DxD I'd feel as if I'm just rehashing another authors work instead of crafting my own.

I think I said it before but most of the DxD cast I intend to participate in the story won't get much screen time till later in this first major arc. Introducing Rias and my version of the Hero Faction was done to add in some world building, and set them up for later activities. I'll occasionally show what the Gremory Peerage and others are up to, but for now it's mainly going to be focused on Jace and his inner circle. Aka the main cast. The group will be rather predictable in composition as I've already mentioned my intentions for the canon Campione(!) cast. Though I think I've added an extra twist which no one will see coming.

Regarding the existence of Great Red; no he does not exist in the Veneration Verse. Neither does Ophis for that matter. I didn't originally intend for either of them to be a part of the story. They don't fit organically in with my altered categorization of gods either. But now that I'm thinking about it that doesn't mean they can't make an appearance. I could write about say an Ophis who comes from a pure DxD universe. It's a fair bet Ophis might try looking to other universes for someone capable of helping her fight Great Red. Though I'd then have to figure out how she would stay in the Veneration verse. As for will that happen? Maybe. It all depends if I think Ophis could add value to the story. So far I haven't thought up any good ideas. If you think you have a way Ophis could contribute to the story PM me. No crack fic stuff though. I enjoy it, but have no clue how to write that stuff.

This chapter is mainly a slice of life chapter. There will be a lot of this throughout the story, mostly just to see the interactions of not so normal individuals on a 'normal' day. Don't worry there will be plenty of action and drama, but small moments matter too. They're a good chance to see the growth of individuals and groups.

We finally get to learn some of Jace's background and hopefully it justify his personality and actions. Jace has performed some outright legally and morally bad actions but as I explained here briefly and will show in greater detail later, I'd have to argue Jace didn't chose the path he took, it chose him. Though, I'm going to be upfront, I've never been involved in circumstances like I'm attempting to portray with Jace. So, I writing about what I think someone who has had those circumstances would be like. Hopefully I made it seem realistic.

Any guess about Jace's parents?

For the meat of the chapter we get to see Godou and Jace have it out, about expectations and what it means to delve into the other's world. Both have a lot of growing to do, hopefully they learn from each other.

Lastly we see the King of Swords' machination. Doni is supposedly an idiot, but when it comes to getting what he wants he's rather sharp. Don't underestimate the Sixth Campione.

Alright. Enjoy.

Chapter 8: Getting to know you

How do you know someone till you've walked a mile in their shoes.

Skies over East Asia March 23rd, 2024

The plane soared through the sky, high above the clouds. The jumbo jet's four engines powering the modern marvel steadily through the great blue yonder. It was on this plane that Jace Armell and Godou Kusanagi found themselves idling the hours away as they flew to Godou's homeland.

It would be several more hours till they reached their destination, so Godou the charming young man that he was decided it spend it in conversation with his travel partner.

"Jace-san, are you sure we should have spent all that money on first-class? It's nice, but was it really necessary?" Godou fretted over the amount of money they spent on tickets. The middle-class born and raised teen couldn't justify spending what amounted to thousands of U.S. dollars on a plane ticket. And that was just for one ticket, let alone two.

Jace lazily scratched his cheek, far less concerned over the exorbitant spending. "We tried it your way on the way to Rome. Remember how that turned out?"

Godou fell silent for a moment, he did remember the flight to Rome. It had been… a less than pleasant experience. Jace had been forced to practically turn himself into a ball during the whole flight from Caligiri to Rome, as the economy-class seating had been far too small. The giant of a man squashed into the seat had scowled the entire way there. That hadn't included the crying baby right behind the two, dampening both their moods.

"Hai." Godou subduedly responded.

"Good. Then you know this was a necessary expense. Besides the Italians were falling over themselves to pay for the tickets, anyway, not like it cost us a thing." Jace stretched his legs out, thoroughly enjoying the precious space his seven-foot frame required. The Campione was still slouched into his chair so his head could rest against the headboard of his seat.

Godou decided that further worrying over the matter was indeed pointless, so he switched topics. "Oh, Jace-san I never told you about my family. I live with my ojiisan and imouto. They're a little… different, but good people. I'm sure you'll get along fine with them. Please don't mind if their habits seem eccentric."

Jace lazily looked over to Godou, before sarcastically responding "Oh, like the guy who helped slay a god?"

Godou blushed and scratched the back of his neck, realizing that was probably far more eccentric than his own family members. "He-he." The Kusanagi heir trailed off.

Jace simply grunted at the Kusanagi heir before saying "Get some sleep Godou. We've got a couple of hours before we reach Japan, and I don't need you bone tired from jetlag."

With that the Campione closed his eyes and began to snooze off. Godou seeing that Jace wasn't interested in further conversation took the advice and rested himself as well.

The plane carrying Jace and Godou landed without incident. The only hiccup was when Jace was detained, temporarily, by the customs agent for carrying so much cash on his person. After a silent staring contest which Jace won, the agent sent them on their way. The duo then proceeded to the Kusanagi household.

Said household was in a well-maintained section of a suburb, specifically the Jinbōchō district of the Chiyoda ward of Tokyo. It was bit of a standout, as the majority of the district wasn't for residential purposes. This particular section as Goduo explained to Jace was referred to as Jinbōchō Book Town. The Kusanagi household was located behind the bookstore run by Godou's grandfather. The two-story residence was nothing spectacular, if well-maintained. A small balcony extended from the upper story, casting a bit of shade on the store front, as the sun was already overhead.

Jace looked up at the sign decorating the storefront. It was an old wooden sign, obviously hand painted. It read 'そよ風に咲く花' in Kanji with an English translation below.

"Blossom in the Breeze?" Jace said aloud.

Godou rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. "Yeah, apparently my great-grandfather thought it was poetic, so he branded the family store that. Ojii-san added the English later because so many students were interested in English that he thought it would boost sales."

"Uh-huh. Did it work?" Jace nonchalantly asked.

Godou put a finger to his cheek as he thought. "Well, we've rarely had a bad year sales wise as far as I can remember so I guess it worked."

The Kusanagi heir pushed his way through the door barring entrance to the bookstore/home. Once through he called out "We're home!". The bookstore itself was empty save for one individual.

Godou's grandfather. Upon seeing his grandson, the Kusanagi elder brightened up exclaiming "Okaerinasai!" The older man man began moving from behind the counter he was sequestered behind. The Kusanagi elder walked up to greet his grandson.

"Godou, it's good to have you back home." The elderly man brought his grandson in for a hug, squeezing his grandson with a surprising amount of strength for one his age. Godou reciprocated the hug, glad to see his grandfather after the long trip to Sardinia. Once they separated the Kusanagi elder looked over his grandson's shoulder to see Jace ducking his head through the too short doorway.

The Kusanagi elder's face took on a winning smile. "Ah Godou, is this the friend you mentioned?"

Godou looking abashed quickly introduced his grandfather and Jace.

"Hai. Ojii-san this is Armell Jace. Jace-san this is my grandfather Kusanagi Ichiro. I hope you two get along." Godou stepped aside so his grandfather could directly face Jace.

The Kusanagi elder walked within arm's reach of Jace, then he stuck out his hand. Jace raised an eyebrow but didn't reject the handshake. The Campione lightly gripped the proffered appendage with his own.

"Welcome to my home. I'm grateful to meet the young man who saved my grandson's life. Godou told me a little bit about you, Jace-kun. Please feel free to call me Ichiro." Ichiro greeted Jace in English believing the young man couldn't speak Japanese.

Godou was flabbergasted by his grandfather's boldness. "Ojii-san! Don't be rude."

Jace smirked like a wolf before responding in perfect Japanese. "No need for English, I speak you tongue just fine. And Jace-kun? You're a bold one Ichiro. But that's fine, no need to get roiled up Godou."

Surprise colored the Kusanagi elder's face, before he chuckled in delight. "Godou you didn't tell me your friend was fluent in our language! Apologies, Jace-kun the way Godou talked about you I thought you already knew too many languages to possibly be fluent in Nippongo. But here I am with my foot in my mouth." Ichiro good naturedly laughed.

Jace just took the interaction in stride. "Yeah, I'm a regular polyglot. Anyway. I'd like to drop off my stuff, it's been kinda awkward carrying around all these suitcases." Jace hefted up the five suitcases he held in hand. He didn't disclose the fact three of them were stuffed full of all his money.

Ichiro clapped his hands, answering. "Of course, you two have had a long trip. Godou I prepared a futon in your room since Jace-kun will be staying with you. I hope you don't mind Jace-kun, but we only have three rooms. But Godou's is the largest, though we might need to find you a new futon. Godou said you were a big guy, but he definitely understated just how big. Oh, by the way your sister is making lunch in the kitchen."

Jace just shrugged, he'd slept in worse conditions, though he wasn't keen on sharing a room. "It'll work. Godou lead the way." Jace ordered the Kusanagi heir.

Godou lead the way to the back of the shop, where a sliding paper door separated the shop from the Kusanagi home. Crossing the threshold the duo stepped into the house proper. Jace was treated to the sight of walls lined with ornamental masks, shelves of pottery, and pictures of various scenes. Oddly enough, as they delved deeper Jace noticed the art, it all looked generally old and seemed to be from various cultures.

"Godou your place looks like a museum." Jace idly commented.

Godou stopped turning around. "Oh, yeah, Ojii-san used to travel all over the world when he was young. He'd always bring back stuff from his travels. Obaa-san would joke he was turning the house into an exhibit in case the bookstore ever failed." The Kusanagi heir continued on his way, till he reached a corner. Rounding the bend a rich thick aroma tingled their nostrils. It was unlike anything Jace had ever smelled before, but he knew one thing. It smelled good.

"Shizuka-chan we're home!" Godou called out as he entered the kitchen.

A girl was standing at a stove, stirring some kind of broth full of noodles. Upon hearing Godou's voice she turned around, ladle in hand. When she caught sight of Godou a faint smile played across her lips. "Oh, welcome home onii-" Shizuka's eyes widened to the size of saucers when Jace entered in behind Godou. Her voice demanding, she cried. "Onii-chan why is there a giant standing behind you?!" Brandishing the ladle straight at Jace.

Godou looked aghast. He rebuked his sister "Shizuka-chan, don't be rude!"

Jace's face set into deadpan at the outburst from the small teenager. "The giant has a name." He rumbled.

Shizuka didn't apologize right away. Not until Godou explained the situation.

"Shizuka-chan this is Armell Jace, the friend I mentioned on the way here. Jace-san this is my imouto, Kusanagi Shizuka. Shizuka-chan please be polite, Jace-san saved my life in Sardinia."

Hearing that this was the famed Jace Armell, Shizuka looked pensive. After a moment she bowed and apologized for her behavior. "I apologize. That was rude of me, I was just caught off guard by how big you are."

Jace looked over the young lady for a moment. She was about a head shorter than Godou, so really small compared to himself. Seeing the contrition on her face, Jace grunted, then assured Shizuka he wasn't offended that much.

"Don't worry, almost everybody has that reaction. I'm used to it."

Shizuka looked up from her bow and seeing the neutral expression on Jace's face decided the matter was resolved.

"Okay. Well, Ojii-san said to make lunch for four, so I decided to make ramen. It'll be ready in a half-an-hour." Shizuka briskly stated.

"The infamous Japanese ramen. Can't wait." Jace hungrily stated, staring intently at the boiling pot of broth.

"Good, I'm hungry too. This way Jace-san." Godou started walking his way out of the kitchen. Jace followed. The duo soon climbed a set of stairs leading up to a second level. Godou stopped in front of door labeled 'Godou'. "Here's my room Jace-san, it might be a little small, but it should fit us both." Godou turned the knob.

The Kusanagi heir pushed the door open, then stepped inside. Jace followed behind, ducking to get through the short doorway.

Once through the threshold Jace noted the details of the room. It was a fair-sized room, not overly large, roughly a five by four-meter room. Jace's feet stomped on comfortable, gray carpeting. Most of the room's blue walls couldn't be directly observed. A large number of bookshelves lined the walls. The space not lined with bookshelves were host to a number of posters. Some of the posters were displaying jarring images of colorful characters. Other posters were displaying images of men in baseball outfits, some in the action of batting, others posing for a smiling camera shot.

"I take it you're a baseball fan Godou." Jace nonchalantly called out, opting to ignore the unfamiliar posters.

Godou's lips turned up at the mention of baseball. "A big fan. Ojii-san would take me out to a game once a month when I was younger. Watching the guys in action was just awesome."

The Campione dropped his suitcases next to the desk in the room. He idly noted that above the desk sat a baseball shaped trophy. The caption on it read: All Star Batter: Kusanagi Godou. He looked over his shoulder to look at Godou. "It would seem you're also a good player as well." Jace asserted.

Godou rubbed the back of his neck, seeing Jace was referring to the trophy. "Yeah, I suppose so." A frown turned the Kusanagi heir's lips downward, before he sighed. "Well, I was until I injured my arm. Tore several ligaments around the shoulder socket. I can't really throw or use it to lift heavy weights anymore."

"I see. Too bad." Jace didn't say anymore, he didn't feel a need too. Godou sensing the lapse in conversation decided to acquaint Jace with their, temporarily, shared room. "Jace-san, if you want you can have the bed. I wouldn't want to make you sleep on the floor." The Kusanagi heir kindly offered.

Jace took one look at the bed and instantly knew it would be far too small. "Thanks. But I'll pass. It's not going to fit me." Jace turned his attention to the futon spread out on the floor. The bedding looked far too small as well. It looked like the Kusanagi elder's suggestion was indeed in order.

"Gomen, Jace-san, we'll get you some proper bedding first thing tomorrow." Godou bowed low, clapping his hands in front of himself. He couldn't believe he'd already failed as a host for the man who had saved his life.

Jace merely took it in stride.

A thought occurred to Jace. "Oi, Godou. What are you going to tell your family about what happened in Sardinia? I assume neither know about magic."

The Kusanagi heir blinked. What was he going to tell his family? He hadn't thought that far ahead. Now that Godou was thinking about it he really didn't want to mention the bits about, Gods and nearly dying several times. They'd think he was crazy.

"Ah, lets… just not mention anything to do with magic. That should work right." Godou requested.

Jace just shrugged. If Godou wanted to keep what happened secret Jace didn't mind. But that did leave one caveat. "You told them I saved your life. You're going to need to explain that. I hope you have something in mind."

Godou did not have anything in mind. "Shit." The Kusanagi heir eloquently said.

()

An hour after their arrival at the Kusanagi household Jace and Godou sat down to eat with Shizuka and Ichiro.

Jace devoured the ramen set before him, eating two bowls by the time the others had only gotten half-way through their first. A loud belch emanated from the Campione as he finished the bowl. Ichiro chuckled in amusement. Godou scratched his chin in uncertainty. Shizuka looked annoyed.

"I guess you liked the ramen." Shizuka stated with thinly veiled annoyance.

Jace noticed this but didn't care. "Yeah, it was actually pretty good." He said instead of excusing himself.

Shizuka's open mouth closed at the unexpected compliment. "Oh. I'm glad you liked it." The youngest Kusangai hesitantly said. Shizuka decided to simply forgive the lack of manners as Jace was a foreigner.

"Jace-kun, I'm curious as to how you two met. Godou said you saved his life. How did it come about that my grandson was in mortal danger overseas?" Ichiro asked once he finished his own bowl of ramen. The Kusanagi elder's question made Godou's spine straighten up. This was what Godou had been worrying about. He still hadn't come up with a cover story that was plausible.

Fortunately for the Kusanagi heir Jace was ready.

"Oh, that? Nothing to it really. I met Godou while he was looking for Lucretia Zola. Just so happened that a sudden storm ripped through the harbor in Caligiri, it was close to where we were. I kept some debris from killing him. Met a rare blond Italian in the process of getting clear of the rubble. Saved her from getting crushed as well. She returned the favor by showing us where Lucretia lived. The old witch lent us her place for the night. Afterward we spent the day just visiting the countryside. Returned to Zola's and spent another night there. Woke up to a bunch of vandals breaking into Zola's villa." Jace cracked his knuckles, the loud popping echoing in the room. "Dealt with the bloody idiots, had to get pretty rough. But came out unscathed. Anyways. Afterwards as thanks for dealing with the criminals a wealthy local invited us to his villa for dinner. Zola couldn't cook, so we decided to take the offer. The bigshot took us sailing the next day. But because of another storm that flew in, I had to save blondie and Godou from drowning in the sea. Cappozi didn't make it. As for the rest isn't anything worth mentioning. We flew to Rome, then to Tokyo here." Jace's explanation while omitting a great deal of information wasn't a total lie. He simply chose to alter the facts a little to keep out mentions of magic and fighting gods. It was the best kind of lie. One based on truth.

Shizuka ate it up. "Wow. That's incredible. You must be some kind of hero Armell-san." The youngest Kusanagi looked toward her brother. "Why can't you do stuff like that Onii-chan?" She berated her brother.

Godou was offended if the deadpan look he gave was any indication. "Shizuka-chan, I'm not a Sentei Ranger." Shaking his head the Kusanagi heir flashed Jace a relieved smile, grateful for the save.

Jace, still hungry, prodded the serving bowl. "Any more ramen, I could still eat."

Shizuka tilted her head to the side in concentration. "I don't know. Let me go check." The youngest Kusanagi rose up from the low seated table and went toward the kitchen.

Ichiro sipped his tea, having yet to say anything since Jace gave his doctored story. The Kusanagi elder smiled indulgently at Jace before speaking. "That was quite the riveting story Jace-kun. Too bad you didn't tell me what really happened in Sardinia."

Jace merely raised an eyebrow while Godou tensed up. The Campione calmly said "Don't know what you're talking about. If you think I'm lying you just read the news. It was all over the local papers." Instead of pressing harder, Ichiro laughed lightly.

"No need. I'll just wait till the day you decide to tell me. A story worth waiting for is much better than a rushed one." The Kusanagi elder sagely spoke.

Neither Godou nor Jace said anything more on than the matter. Jace was unconcerned if Ichiro suspected more on the matter. He wouldn't be around long enough for it to be a problem for himself. Godou on the other hand was sweating bullets. What was he going to do if his grandfather pressed him on the issue.

"There's no more ramen." Shizuka said upon her return, sitting down across from Jace.

The Campione frowned fiercely. He was still far too hungry.

() Kusanagi Residence March 24th, 2024

When Godou awoke in the morning he nearly went back to sleep. It was still the period in between when school ended and before the new grade began. He didn't have any reason to be up early, so he debated getting another hour of sleep just to indulge himself. Surely, Jace wouldn't mind.

The remembrance of his guest made the Kusanagi heir's eyes shoot wide open. Crap, he thought. Godou had nearly ignored Jace in his laziness. Godou lurched upward stiffly, body still numb from sleep. The Kusanagi heir looked around to find his guest, expecting him to be up and ready for the day. What he saw instead brought a quiet smile to his lips.

Jace was sprawled out on the floor, limbs flared out from underneath the too small futon. The Campione apparently was unaffected by the cool temperature of the season, as he seemed content to be only partially covered by the futon. It was the most relaxed Godou had seen Jace, as the Campione so far always seemed vigilant or on rather on guard all the time. The new, albeit unconscious side of the taciturn man was an amusing sight. Godou debated not waking the man, at all, but if Shizuka was preparing breakfast she wouldn't wait to serve. And considering the immense appetite of the Campione, Godou knew he'd be remiss to not wake Jace in time.

Godou rose from his bed, plopping his feet onto the floor. He slowly approached Jace, then he kneeled down. "Jace-san, it's time to wake up." Godou quietly whispered, hoping to gently wake the sleeping giant. It did not work, as Jace remained fast asleep.

Godou spoke louder now, "Jace-san wake up." Still to no avail. The Campione merely continued snoozing. Godou frowned. What should he do, he pondered. Speaking louder would likely do no good. The Kusanagi heir considered shaking the Campione awake. It was something Godou thought Jace would not appreciate. But it was likely the only way to rouse the Campione. So, Godou gently grasped Jace by the meat of his shoulder and started shaking.

"Jace-san it's time to wake—eep!" Godou cried out as he found himself grabbed firmly by the wrist. The grip on his wrist turned into a swift tug as Godou found the room suddenly revolving. Before Godou's brain could process it, he wase pulled downward, landing face down on the floor. The grip on his wrist pulled, extending his arm in a painful hyper extension.

Godou had been placed in an armlock.

"Godou?" The Kusanagi heir adjusted his field of view, to meet the amber irises looking across from him. Both simply stared at the other, one in mounting pain from the armlock, the other in annoyed confusion.

"Ah, Jace-san, can you let go of my arm, it kinda hurts." Godou pleaded.

Jace, having finally woken up, noted the situation. He raised an eyebrow at seeing the armlock he'd placed Godou in unconsciously. "Did you try to wake me up? The Campione questioned.

Godou instead of answering the question he renewed his plea. "Jace-san, my arm." Just a little more desperately.

Jace blinked, then laconically said "Oh, yeah. Sure."

Jace released the armlock, allowing Godou to withdraw his limb from its painful hyperextension. The Kusanagi heir tenderly massaged the abused arm. He just knew it was going to be sore all day. Once the pain had subsided sufficiently Godou sat up. He found Jace had already done so as well. The giant of a man was stretching the non-existent kings in his back.

"Ah, Jace-san are you alright?" Godou asked.

Jace yawned, sounding more like a bear than a human, before responding. "Why?"

Godou instead of being concerned about himself chose to worry over his roommate. The same one who had unintentionally attacked him. "Well, you kinda attacked me. I thought maybe… you were having a bad dream."

Jace raised an eyebrow at Godou's assertation. "No. I don't dream much. It was more out of habit than anything else."

Jace's explanation only made Godou more concerned.

"What kind of habit has you attack someone while you're sleeping?!"

Jace sighed. Godou had a habit of asking questions that only made things more difficult.

"The kind you get after people attack you in your sleep." Jace cut Godou off as soon as he saw the follow up question in the Kusanagi heir's eyes. "Drop it. You don't want to know anymore." Jace rose up turning his back on Godou to signify the conversation was over. The Kusanagi heir frowned, wondering just what kind of life Jace Armell had lived that he had such ridiculous instincts.

() Tokyo Proper: Shinagawa

Jace was drawing stares everywhere he went. Most foreigners in Japan did so, if for no other reason than that it was different from the homogeneity of Japan. But Jace was attracting more stares than was the norm. His massive size was causing people to actively avoid him and simultaneously talk to him. The people avoiding him were mostly older folks, Jace honestly looked like a delinquent with his ever-present scowl, mismatched clothing, and seemingly died hair. The strangers brave enough to talk to him were primarily young women. Most were attempting to take pictures or asking him to do a stream with them.

Jace swiftly refused them all, driving them all away in disappointment.

"You sure are popular Jace-kun. Too bad you don't take the time to converse with an attractive young lady. You might just have a wonderful time if you were just a little more talkative." Ichiro teased Jace.

The giant of a man grunted, unfazed by the teasing. "Not my habit to be a social butterfly. Besides their only interested in me because I'm a foreigner. I don't think they'd find me all that interesting."

"Oh, is that such a bad thing? Even a chance acquaintance may yield wonderful fruit." Ichiro countered, the older man sounding full of wisdom.

"Because I saw the same in Russia. Plenty of people simply want something exotic, something different. I don't have time to be their temporary high." Jace rebutted.

Ichiro didn't seem to put out if the indulgent smile on his face was any indication. Jace glanced over, blowing an extra deep puff of air out of his nostrils as the only reaction.

Godou decided to try and mollify Jace, if for no other reason than he didn't want the Campione to be in a bad mood all day. "Jace-san, please don't mind Ojii-san. He just wants you to have the best experience while in Tokyo."

"Sure. Anyway. Ichiro. You never said where we were heading." Jace's statement caused Godou to blink, his grandfather never had said where they were going. Only that Shizuka wouldn't be interested in it. So, the three men had set out minus the youngest Kusanagi.

"Ojii-san where are we heading?" Godou's question brought a smile to his grandfather's face.

"The Tokyo Keiba. It'll be a guy's night out!" Ichiro enthusiastically stated. The Kusanagi elder had intended the statement to solicit responses of interest from the younger men. It… did not.

Jace had the milder reaction. "Horse racing?" Merely being inquisitive.

Godou on the other hand was aghast. He actually stopped walking, causing the other two to stop as well. "Ojii-san! Gambling really?! Why are you taking Jace-san there!" The outburst from the Kusanagi heir garnered more stares from strangers.

Ichiro looked confused. "Godou why are you upset? It's simply good fashioned fun, authentic Nipppon tradition. Jace-kun can experience all the Keiba has to offer. And why would you assume Jace-kun would be gambling? You're both minors after all."

Godou seemed to deflate a little, once he heard his grandfather's reasoning. "Well, that's… not so bad. Wait." Godou's expression turned sharp. "Ojii-san are planning on gambling?"

"Why of course Godou. It's part of the fun. It would be even better if you and Jace-kun could participate, but we'll just have to wait till you're of age." Ichiro calmly said, as if it was a natural thing.

"No, no, no. Ojii-san you always get to way into gambling and start betting huge sums of money. You lost over 100,000 yen last time you went there!" Godou on the other hand was not acting so casually. He was conservative with money, so the thought of gambling was averse to him. Especially when his grandfather had a tendency to gamble and lose money.

Ichiro took the admonishment in stride. "Now, Godou that was money we didn't need. I never bet more than we can afford to comfortably lose. Or do you no trust your grandfather?"

Godou was stuck. As much as he disliked gambling, his grandfather wasn't lying. The Kusanagi's had never lost money that put them in financial straits, due to his grandfather's gambling habits. Godou did trust his grandfather. But that didn't mean he approved of his grandfather's choices.

Godou seeking to turn the tide of the conversation, looked to Jace. Instead of finding an ally in the match, the Kusanagi heir found another opponent.

"Sounds fun." Jace was intrigued by the possibility of the horse race.

"Jace-san, you actually want to go?" Godou inquired, surprised by the genuine interest the Campione was displaying. It was so different from either his stoic nature or blood thirsty battle tendencies.

"Yeah. Been a while since I was at a horse race. Good time to go see what Japanese horses can do." Jace earnestly said, showcasing enthusiasm he'd only previously displayed for food or fighting.

Godou opened then closed his mouth. Initially he wanted to argue against it, because he wanted to avoid his grandfather gambling. But seeing the genuine interest Jace held for the Keiba stayed his argument. He wanted Jace to have a good time in Japan, so… he decided to fold.

"Alright if you want to Jace-san, it should be fine." Godou relented.

Jace tilted his head, wondering why the Kusanagi heir had changed his mind.

Ichiro smiled openly, wrapping an arm around his grandson. The two were roughly equal in height, Godou standing at 180cm, with Ichiro slightly shorter. "See Godou, we'll have a good time and make some memories worth remembering. Now onward, we want to get there for the 14:00 races."

Ichiro began walking forward with a bounce in his step. Jace shrugged, then quickly caught up to the Kusanagi elder. Godou for his part trailed slightly behind the other two, expression somewhat dour. He just hoped no one would bet a huge amount of money.

() Keiba Horse Race, Tokyo

The Keiba, as Jace soon learned, was unlike the racetracks of his home country.

For starters the cultural emphasis placed on them, or at least the Tokyo one, turned it into a spectacle. Rather than a bare minimum approach, the whole ground was designed to emphasize the horse racing. Each grandstand was designed differently to provide a different perspective on the races. Each was angled just so, to provide a unique view.

Or as Jace was told by Ichiro as they passed by the seating, whether grandstand or building.

"That's the Umatase statue." Ichiro pointed to the short stature of an upright horse, leaning against a five-pointed star. "They placed it there in 2016, to commemorate the night racing. Or as their better known, Twinkle Races." Ichiro walked right up to the statue, which stood a meter taller than the Kusanagi elder due to its pedestal.

Jace a little behind Ichiro, stopped farther away. "Twinkle races?" Jace deadpanned. The moniker sounded ridiculous to him.

Godou rubbed the back of his neck. "Yeah. It's because of the light show they put on. It's actually rather pretty."

Jace hummed. "Is it." Jace asked rhetorically. He moved to stand beside Ichiro, looking over the statue. It wasn't anything impressive to Jace. Honestly, Jace thought the statue looked ridiculous.

"Boys, why don't we take a picture to commemorate Jace-kun's first Keiba visit. I'll take the picture, you two get in front of the statue." Ichiro suggested.

Jace shrugged, neither for nor against the idea. Godou was onboard.

The two teens took up opposing sides of the statue. Godou waved his hand out, going for a friendly pose. Jace simply crossed his arms in a stoic manner. Ichiro frowned seeing this.

"Jace-kun, why don't you act a little livelier. It will make the picture better." Ichiro suggested, causing Jace to raise an eyebrow. The Campione didn't see much need to do anything else.

"Is it necessary?" Jace said, resisting the request.

"Of course! Don't you want to look back on this moment and remember it fondly. Just a little smile."

Jace sighed. He decided it was easier to just go along with the request. Though he didn't smile per say. Instead, he raised his left hand, as he was on the right-hand side of the statue, palm out. Pointing his thumb straight up, he raised his index and middle finger out straight, then angled them out to forty-five degrees. It was an improvised wave.

Ichiro tilted his head to the side, smiling amusedly at the stubbornness of Jace. He raised his phone up, centering the camera on the two teens. A quick swipe of his fingers and the picture was taken.

"There, now we have a memento for this experience. I'll have it developed later." Ichiro assured the two teens.

With that taken care of the three made their way to the Paddock. Or as Ichiro explained to Jace, the pre-race examination.

"Not bad. The horses are of good stock. Clearly bred for speed." Jace genuinely praised the horses as they passed by. The candid opinion raising Godou's eyebrows. It wasn't the first time Jace had expressed praise, but it was still rare enough that it was unusual. Jace's rapt attention to the horses was also unusual. The Campione almost seemed pleased.

"Jace-san, is horse racing a big thing in Russia as well?" Godou inquisitively asked, hoping to get a bit more out of the taciturn man than usual.

"Da. The sport is nearly two-hundred years old in Russia. It's a favorite pastime among the populace. Especially the betting aspect." Jace smirked, remembering the times he'd watched a horse race.

"Oh, seems the Russians know how to have a good time. Too bad you're too young to place a bet Jace-kun, with your keen eye you'd probably pick the winner." Ichiro jested.

"Yeah. I've never lost a bet on a horse race." Jace said casually.

"Nani?" Godou spoke, confused.

Jace raised an eyebrow at Godou's confusion. "What do you mean what? I've never lost a bet before. It's not hard. Just examine the horse and the jockey riding them. It tells you everything you need to know."

"O-kay." Godou stuttered out. "I guess the legal age in Russia is fairly young then, right?"

Jace shrugged. "Compared to Japan's twenty sure. But it's only eighteen."

The towering Campione's words caused Godou to frown. "Wait, Jace-san, if your only seventeen how did you bet then?" Godou's disapproval of gambling made him already suspicious, hearing about the discrepancies in age Jace was stating only made it worse.

Seeing Godou's expression Jace rolled his eyes, the Kusanagi's heir's disapproval insignificant to him. "Relax, Godou. No, I couldn't bet officially, but nothing said I couldn't bet amongst colleagues."

Godou relaxed slightly, glad to hear that nothing illegal had taken place. Though Jace's choice of words to describe his friends was strange. Wait, did Jace even have friends? Godou frowned again, deeper this time as he studied the flame haired Campione. It finally hit Godou, Jace had never explained how he got so far from his home country in the first place. Or why he wasn't actively trying to return to it. Though Jace said he had no family. Godou wondered what the Russian Campione's past was like to be the way he was.

Jace though wasn't looking at Godou nor reading his mind so the thoughts going through the Kusanagi heir's head were unknown to him. Unaware of Godou's ruminations Jace continued to look over the horses. Silently gauging the condition of each horse and their jockeys.

"So, Jace-kun, figured out the first-place winner yet?" Ichiro half joked, testing to see what Jace had any real substance behind his claim.

"Yeah. Number three, the Chestnut. The mare is clearly ready to go from how easily her muscles are flexing. The rider is relaxed too, unlike the others, so he won't overdo it in the opening. Gives them the best chance to win." Jace's confidence in how he spoke was so assured it stunned Godou and Ichiro.

"Oh, you can tell all that from just watching them trot here. No other secret technique to share?" Ichiro prodded.

Jace smirked a little at the Kusanagi elder's perceptiveness. "No secret, just a gut feeling to go on. But they've never led me wrong." Jace stated with even greater confidence.

Godou had to admit, Jace's instincts, from what he'd seen so far, were uncanny.

Ichiro merrily laughed, the younger man's words causing a small bit of mirth. Despite his taciturn nature Ichiro found Jace to be a refreshingly candid personality. "I see. Well, then Jace-kun should I bet on the Chestnut then?"

Jace paused for a moment, as a thought occurred to him. He turned to fully face Ichiro, looking down straight into the older man's eyes. "I have a better idea. You bet a certain amount on my proposed picks, and I'll back it up with money I brought with me."

Ichiro sobered up, face settling into a stoic line. "Oh, are you asking me to gamble on your behalf Jace-kun?" Ichiro's voice was emotionless, giving away no indication of his thoughts on the matter.

Jace waved his right hand back and forth, as if dispelling such a notion. "No. I'm merely proposing that you go with my choice of winners, instead of your own. If you do, I'll back up the wager. On the off chance I'm wrong you lose nothing. But if you win, we split the pot equally. Consider it a riskless bet. Either you lose nothing, or you gain a great deal of money."

Ichiro said nothing for several moments, the Kusanagi elder contemplating Jace's proposal. "How much do you want me to place down?" Ichiro non-committedly asked.

"The equivalent of fifty-thousand US Dollars." Jace was utterly serious.

Godou's mouth dropped in shock. Part of him wanted to think he merely misheard or that Jace misspoke. But he knew better. He'd heard exactly what Jace had said.

Ichiro's eyebrows raised in surprise, his eyes widening. He'd expected a bet about one tenth that at max. Jace Armell, the Kusanagi elder thought was full of surprises. As for how Ichiro responded was relatively simple. He laughed. Laughed heartily. He laughed so hard that the elderly man was forced to double over and grasp his knees for support. Godou thought his grandfather was having an attack of some kind and rushed over to help him. Jace, noting no signs of distress waited calmly for the Kusanagi elder to finish. When Ichiro did finish, he lightly clapped his grandson on the shoulder to assure Godou he was fine. Wiping a tear from his eye, Ichiro finally spoke. "Oh, Jace-kun you're far more interesting than this old man thought. Very well, you have a deal." Ichiro stuck his hand out for a handshake. Jace, seeing this smirked, reaching out for the Kusanagi elder's proffered hand. They shook on the matter, agreeing to the wager and the amount requested.

Godou though did try to get them to abort the idea. "Wait, wait, wait! That's a lot of money, what if you lose? Jace-san why do you need to bet so much?"

Jace tilted his head to the side as if confused by Godou's outburst. "Because I don't have any yen. Good way to get ahold of some."

Godou hoping to use logic to defeat the scheme said "Then why don't you go to an exchange booth? That way you can't risk losing anything."

Jace shrugged, saying with certainty "It's more fun this way. Besides I won't lose."

Ichiro clapped Jace on the arm agreeing with the towering teen. "Jace-kun is right Godou, why not have a little fun, besides if he's that confident why not? Good chance to see if all that bravado is real."

Godou wanted to put his face in his hands. Not only was his grandfather an avid gambler, so was Jace. There were two of them now! His conservative tendencies overruled Godou was forced to admit defeat. "Fine."

With everyone in, if reluctant, agreement, the trio made their way to the G-Front Grandstand. Once inside Godou and Ichiro unzipped their jackets, enjoying the warmer air of the building compared to the chill of the outside. Jace for his part didn't have a jacket as he'd left Italy without finding one of an appropriate size. Not that it bothered him that much. The Campione's constitution was more than enough to handle the mild chill of Tokyo during March. Besides compared to a Russian winter this was nothing. Ichiro made his way to the betting counter, while Godou and Jace remained behind in the first-floor lounge.

Godou fidgeted in place, while Jace remained still, during their wait for Ichiro's return. Godou was about to attempt to make conversation with Jace when he saw a terrifying sight. Jace was smiling. The smile was not a pleasant one. It was showing far too many teeth, turned just so at the corners to be far too sharp. The Campione's eyes were intensely lit, full of promises of violence. Godou gulped, a flood of nervous energy coursing through his veins.

Godou looked toward where Jace's attention was fixed. Godou half expected to see a god, Jace's expression perfectly matching the one he used when he faced down Verethragna and Melqart. What Godou saw surprised him. It was nothing more than one of his fellow countrymen in casual attire, standing roughly three meters away. The man though was staring straight at Jace. With utter fear in his eyes. The man looked like he was staring at death.

Godou unsure of what was happening, addressed his companion. "Jace-san?"

Jace held up one finger, signaling Godou to wait. The Campione then mouthed the word 'well', in Japanese to the terrified man across from him. The terrified man stood stock still for several moments. Then abruptly turned around and hurried away with the energy of prey escaping a predator. Jace watched the man leave, eyes narrowing as he observed the event. Once the man was gone Jace's expression returned to a neutral position.

"Jace-san what was that about?" Godou questioned, once he figured it was okay to speak.

Jace turned toward Godou, cracking his neck as he replied. "Just letting our tail know I know he's there."

"Eh?" Godou confusedly muttered.

"Someone's been following us since we left your place. I take it you didn't realize." The way Jace spoke was part explanation, part admonishment.

Godou's confusion was only growing. He didn't understand why someone would be following them. Unless… "Do you think it has something to do with… what happened in Sardinia?"

"I'd bet on it. Probably someone like Erica or Zola. Must be keeping tabs on me." Jace reasoned.

Godou frowned, unpleased with the fact that someone had been stalking them. "What do you think they want?" A thought popped it Godou's mind. One that brought unease to him. "Do you think they're like those guys in the masks?" Sudden concern over the safety of his family found its way into Godou's heart.

Jace, noticing the emotions going on in Godou mulled over his answer. He didn't know why but he refrained from just dismissing Godou's concern. "Honestly, I don't know. That's why I sent the message. Make them think twice before doing anything. They'll be more wary now."

Godou didn't relax, anxiety still gnawing away at him. "Jace-san can you… protect them?"

Jace tilted his head to the side. Godou had whispered so the Campione thought he had misheard. "Protect your grandfather and sister?" Jace asked for clarification.

Godou nodded. Looking Jace in the eye the Kusanagi heir stared intently expecting the help.

Jace frowned. He didn't protect people. Warning off a potential predator was one thing. Going out of his way to save people was a whole different beast. This was why he had not wanted to fight Melqart. People developed expectations he did not want them to have.

Before Jace could reply though, Ichiro had returned.

The Kusanagi elder held in hand the promised winning ticket. "You should have seen their faces when I said I wanted to place the bet, boys. The poor attendant froze mouth open; I thought a fly would buzz right in." Ichiro good naturally chuckled.

Interrupted, Jace decided to let the matter lie for now. He knew though that Godou would bring the matter up later in private. That was fine by him. He had issues of his own to discuss with the Kusanagi heir. Seeing that Ichiro was about to question them on their silence, Jace diverted the oncoming conversation.

"Must have been a sight to see. So, I take it they accepted the bet anyway." Jace stated, reaching out to examine the ticket. Ichiro handed it over without complaint. Another thing Jace learned about Campione was that their ability to auto-translate any language also extended to written languages. It took a little bit of practice to fluently write a language, though reading was much easier. Didn't do much for Jace's less than legible handwriting. He supposed he'd never become a famous calligrapher. He mourned the loss. For two seconds.

Focusing on the ticket Jace noticed Ichiro had followed his instructions exactly. "Good. Well, we're guaranteed a big win tonight. Now let's get to our seats, I'd hate to miss the race." Jace handed the ticket back to the Kusanagi elder. The trio then set out to find a seat for the race.

()

The race had been a close one. But Jace's instincts had been spot on. Number three, the sole Chestnut in the race, had pulled ahead in the last stretch by half her length just beating out the horse behind her. His instincts had been so good he'd even placed the last place horse. The poor Beech colored horse had been driven too hard at the start and subsequently had fallen behind the rest of the pack. Ichiro and Godou's shocked expressions made their disbelief clear. Jace merely smirked at them, as if saying they never should have doubted him. If either had been more familiar with the supernatural, they would have known Campione were known for having ridiculous luck. Or rather, making their own luck.

"I can't believe you were right. You actually guessed right." Godou stared straight at the fortunate Campione, mouth hanging open. Godou was realized he shouldn't have been so surprised; this was the same man who had killed gods before his very eyes. Still, it was ludicrous!

Ichiro after a few seconds of shocked silence, abruptly started into laughter. The younger men looked on wondering what had come over the Kusanagi elder. Ichiro laughed for a few moments, before quieting down. When he finally stopped, the Kusanagi elder smiled good naturedly at Jace. "Jace-kun you don't disappoint. You said you were right and right you were. You guessed right down to the loser. I wonder can you see the future?"

Jace shrugged in response. As far as he knew he couldn't. Maybe one of his Authorities allowed for that, but not that he'd experienced yet. Jace kept that to himself, both for Godou's sake and his own reluctance to sound like a mad man. A little firmly Jace said "I told you; I never lose a bet."

Ichiro snorted, then nodded his head. "True. You must have some killer instincts Jace-kun."

Jace nearly said the Kusanagi elder had no idea. Instead, the towering teen inquired as to how much they made from the bet. "So, for those of us not familiar with the yen, how much did we win?"

Godou being the most skilled in math, ran the numbers. "With the amount you put down, the odds, and current exchange rate…. 30 million yen. Or in US dollars…. Almost two-hundred thousand dollars."

Jace whistled, that was the most money he'd ever made in one day. "Nice." Jace said, quite pleased with his earnings. Even if he had to split that in half, that was a massive sum of money. Worth more than nine million rubles from his home country. He wouldn't have to worry about money for a while at least. "Alright, let's go collect our earnings." The towering teen turned around heading back to the betting booth, prompting Ichiro and Godou to follow after him.

() Somewhere in Shinagawa Tokyo

The collection of their prize money went smoothly. The head commissioner of the races came to congratulate Ichiro on his luck, the official personally writing out the check. Ichiro was in high spirits due to the earnings. Or would have been had it not been for a caveat of the bet.

"Banned for life! Of all the unfair verdicts." Ichiro bemoaned.

The success of the bet had been so great that the race commission board had decided to ban Ichiro from betting on the Keiba permanently. It was an overreaction, considering that it was unlikely the Kusanagi elder or anyone (except for Jace) would be able to repeat the feat. But the board needed to take some action lest they find themselves held liable for the incident. An investigation into corruption had already been launched into the board on the suspicion that they had been in on the bet.

This was all unknown to Ichiro, who was lamenting his misfortunate fortune. The Kusanagi elder had thought about fighting the ban on the spot, but that might have raised questions on how he managed to calculate the bet. Obviously, he couldn't say he had taken the advice of a minor. The authorities might misinterpret that as he'd bet on behalf of a minor. Something which Japanese law took quite seriously. Throw him in prison seriously. A long shot most likely, but one that made the Kusanagi elder uncomfortable enough to not take any chances. Ichiro may be adventurous, but stupid he was not.

The Kusanagi elder sighed, "They could have just placed a restriction on how much I could bet. The fun is the uncertainty, not the profits."

The two teens shared a look at the Kusanagi elder's sadness. Godou for his part was secretly pleased his grandfather was no longer able to gamble on the Keiba. While he was relieved and honestly grateful that they made such a large sum instead of losing, the Kusanagi heir didn't like gambling still. Godou didn't lecture his grandfather on this though, knowing better than to add insult to injury. "Sorry Ojii-san. At least they didn't ban you from watching the races at least. That was fun still, right?" Godou hoped that the silver lining to the incident would mollify his grandfather. It did not.

Jace on the other hand actually pitied the Kusanagi elder. As much as Jace enjoyed watching the race itself, he also understood the thrill of not knowing if your bet would win. Knowing Ichiro was denied that thrill because of him almost stirred up the feeling of recrimination in the towering teen. Jace pondered if it might be worthwhile to contact the magic societies of Japan. They might be able to pull off a favor like the Italians had…

A sudden rumble brought the three men out of their musings. The Kusanagi heir and elder looked around for the source. Jace frowned. Another rumble emanated, drawing the two Tokyo natives to the surprisingly close source. Jace's stomach.

"Ah, Jace-san are hungry?" Godou politely asked.

Jace put his hands in his pockets. "It's time for dinner, so yeah." He slowly drawled.

Ichiro smiled heartily, saying "That won't do. We can't afford to let our dear guest go hungry can we Godou."

Godou snapped his fingers, a thoughtful expression on his face. "Oh, I know. There's an eating challenge going on at a restaurant not far from here. If you beat the challenge you eat for free. Jace-san, want to try?"

Jace's head tilted in contemplation. "The food any good?" The Campione questioned.

"I've always liked it when I ate there." Godou stated.

Jace nodded, not a ringing endorsement, but a passable one. "Alright lead the way."

()

Godou and Jace arrived at the restaurant sans Ichiro. The Kusanagi elder had received a phone call from Shizuka demanding his immediate return. His expression seemed wary during the call. Godou had asked but Ichiro had refused to say what the nature of the call was. Instead, the Kusanagi elder asked the boys to be back by before midnight, then he departed.

Jace looked up at the sign for the restaurant, noting its details. Surprisingly instead of kanji or what the Campione would assume Japanese cuisine looked like he saw a burger with English surrounding it.

"Galaxy Burger. Tastes out of this world." Jace looked at the Kusanagi heir who was watching him. "A burger joint?" Jace's questioning tone caused Godou to fidget. The Kusanagi heir thought he'd displeased the Campione with his choice.

"Yeah. I know it's not what you were probably expecting, but I really like the food here. The burgers are great, and they season the fries with special salt. I thought you'd like it too. Or do you not like this kind of food?" Godou said abashedly.

To Godou's relief Jace didn't confirm his worry. "I'm not that picky. Besides I'm curious about that challenge. I haven't eaten enough all day, hopefully this will fix that. Let's head inside."

The duo made their way to the counter, which thankfully was only lightly filled up with other customers. After a short wait the duo reached the front. The employee manning the register smiled with perk at Godou once he came in front of the counter. "Welcome to Galaxy Burger! Which of our-" The cashier stopped abruptly once she finally looked at Jace. Her eyes traveled up from his chest to his face. "Your tall." The cashier blurted out.

Jace was unimpressed with the deduction. "I'm painfully aware. Any other stellar deductions." The Campione deadpanned.

The cashier snapped back to reality; she quickly began blushing once she realized what she'd done. "Gomen! I—I was just caught off guard. Ho—ow can I help you today?"

Jace didn't bother sighing, he was too used to people doing this for it to be worth the effort. Instead, he placed his order. "The Jupiter Burger challenge. I'll take it on."

"Right. Okay. We'll just need you to sign this voucher and waiver sir." The cashier said.

"A waiver? Must be one bloody hell of a challenge if I need to sign a waiver." Jace intoned.

The cashier, now finally recomposed, politely explained the challenge. "It's standard procedure for all Galaxy Burger challenges. We just want to make sure customers understand the risks of overconsumption. Now, for the Jupiter Burger, you'll need to eat the whole burger and fries within an hour, or you won't be eligible for the free meal. If at any point you feel ill or that you can't finish the meal, please stop. If needed, we'll call medical services on your behalf."

"Fine. Just give me a pen." Jace demanded. After the waiver was signed, Godou placed his order for The Martian, another burger. Once the duo was seated in a secluded corner, Godou attempted to engage in their previously interrupted discussion.

"Jace-san about earlier…" The Kusanagi heir trailed off.

"Spit it out Godou. I don't care to beat around the bush." Jace rebuked.

The Kusanagi heir swallowed physically, then swallowed his nervousness. "What are we going to do about those tails? Do you think they'll do something?"

Jace raised an eyebrow, noting how Godou said 'we'. "Don't know. My guess, considering how the Italians treated us once they realized I was a Campione; probably not. Seems Campione carry a good deal of respect from mages; or fear."

Godou wasn't mollified by that response. "But what if they're like the guys in masks? That didn't stop them from targeting us." The Kusanagi heir refuted.

Jace placed his left cheek on his left fist, staring down Godou with an almost accusatory gaze. "I know I was there. If you're that worried there's a simple way to fix this situation." Jace stated.

Godou suddenly looked relieved, albeit surprised there was a such a fix. "Really? How?"

"Stop associating with me." Jace simply said.

Godou blinked. "Eh?" The Kusanagi heir ineloquently blurted out.

"I said, stop associating with me. The reason you were in danger in Sardinia was because you chose to help me out. The reason you and your family might be targeted is because of me. You do realize that right?" Jace sternly spoke, almost admonishingly.

Godou had not realized it. The Kusanagi heir had been so focused on stopping the devastation of Verethragna and Melqart to think of such a thing. When he offered Jace to stay at his home he'd been thinking of something else rather than the ramifications of such a choice.

"Ah, no?" Godou uncertainly spoke.

Jace stared Godou down. The Campione's amber irises boring down into the Kusanagi heir's dark brown. Godou swallowed at the intensity of Jace's gaze. Godou felt as if he was being examined down to his very core.

"No? You really didn't think about that before you chose to help me? Even after Sardinia you still chose to invite me to your home without considering the risks. You think that was a good idea?" Jace was growing visibly annoyed if his tone was any indication.

Godou though didn't back down in the face of the Campione. After witnessing everything he had, the Kusanagi heir wasn't intimidated. Oh, Jace was definitely intimidating, especially if you were his enemy. But. Godou knew something else. Something that he didn't think even Erica Blandelli had realized.

So, Godou said one simple word to Jace's question. "Yes."

Now, Jace blinked. The Campione studied Godou, noting the firm expression of his face. The Kusanagi heir was serious. Jace couldn't find any indicator of deceit or uncertainty. Godou meant what he said.

Jace placed his forearms on the table, leaned forward, eyes narrowed and spoke low and sternly. "You actually believe that?"

Godou didn't back down, leaning forward himself till only a few inches separated him from the Campione. "Yeah, I do." Godou said resolutely.

Jace Armell for the first time, since Godou had met him, now displayed uncertainty. The Campione pulled back a little, a flicker of surprise going through his eyes. Jace's head turned a little, as if attempting to physically discern where this newfound courage the Kusanagi heir was displaying was coming from. Jace had thought Godou feared him. He was beginning to suspect it was something else.

Before the discussion could continue two waitresses interrupted the duo. "Pardon us, we have your order." The lead waitress spoke. She was carrying Godou's order and was silently asking with her eyes to clear the space he was occupying on the table. Godou apologized, quickly vacating the space. Jace eyed the order, getting his first look at a Galaxy Burger.

He had to admit it did look good. The whole thing was of fair size, on a larger than average sesame bun. The burger itself was an appetizing 2.5cm (1in) thick of well grilled meat. A large leaf of trimmed lettuce was just above the burger, followed by a healthy amount of red onion. The slight tinge of acid Jace could smell told that there was some juicy tomato on the burger as well. Beyond that he noted an unusual but savory smell of some kind. Perhaps a unique sauce? A side of golden-brown fries topped the order off. The waitress placed it before Godou then stepped back.

Godou's face lit up seeing the burger. It was his favorite order. And favorite food in general.

Jace, now sufficiently hungry, switched his attention from Godou's order to the second waitress. And the gargantuan burger she was carrying. The waitress stepped forward, carrying the massive sandwich to Jace. She placed the tray before the Campione, who was staring intently at the burger.

The thing had to be over 25cm(10in) tall, from bottom to top bun. Jace counted four separate burgers in the mountain of a sandwich. Each layer of meat was nearly 5cm(2in) thick, with gooey cheese melted onto it. Much like Godou's it was layered identically with veggies, albeit more thickly. It looked divine to Jace and smelled equally good. The Campione absently noticed the pile of seasoned fries on the side.

"Now that is a burger." Jace licked his lips, eager to dig in.

Before he could the waitress stopped him. "Sir, before you begin, we need to go over the rules." She said it professionally, as it was a practiced line. A flicker of irritation crossed Jace's face at the interruption, but he waved her on. The waitress went over the rules. Jace had one hour to finish the meal. This included not only the burger but the fries as well. If at any point he vomited, he forfeited the challenge. If he gave any food to someone else, he forfeited. If he managed to eat the whole order he ate for free and got his picture applied to the Wall of Stars.

"Is that all?" Jace rhetorically asked. The waitress didn't show any signs of annoyance at the rude way the Campione spoke. She instead affirmed the rules. Jace nodded, then proceeded to pick the burger up.

The Campione gently picked up the burger to prevent the monstrosity from falling apart. Once it was in position Jace took one small bite. He chewed and rolled the food around in his mouth. He swallowed. Nodded his head as if pleased. Then proceeded to tear into the burger without restraint.

The waitresses had yet to leave and were flabbergasted at the ravenous way the Campione was eating. Godou merely chuckled at the sight, already used to the way Jace would devour food he liked; especially when hungry. Godou picked up his own burger and dug in, albeit at a much slower pace.

()
Jace had devoured the whole order in fifteen minutes. By the time the Campione had finished he'd generated a small crowd of onlookers. The challenge had been ongoing for a month now, and it had yet to be beaten. So, when a customer not only managed to beat the challenge but did so in an astonishingly short amount of time, everyone wanted to watch. Not just other customers, but the waitresses, and even cooks came to see the feat. Everyone cheered when the last fry went down Jace's gullet.

The Campione leaned back into his seat, patting his stomach. Godou by this point had finished his own order smiled cheerfully at the scene. "Good stuff, right? The tastes really are out of this world."

Jace smirked in response, "Yeah, it was good. Probably the best burger I've ever had. Fries weren't bad either." Jace gained a thoughtful expression, then turned to the closest waitress. "Oi. I'll take another."

The waitress blinked in surprise. "Gomen sir. Could you repeat that?"

"I said, I'll take another order of the Jupiter Challenge." Jace said louder, making sure he was heard this time.

All the onlookers went silent after Jace's declaration.

Until Godou started snickering. The Kusanagi heir attempted to hide his chuckles behind his hand once he saw Jace staring straight at him. "Gomen, gomen, it's just…. you never fail to amaze Jace-san."

Jace's expression was one of confusion, unsure of what Godou was implying. "What the bloody hell is that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing, nothing." Godou airily responded.

Jace wasn't mollified by the response, but ultimately decided it wasn't worth pursuing further dialogue over the strange behavior. Instead Jace repeated his desire for another burger. The staff, now sufficiently over their collective disbelief, hurried to get the order done.

() Jinbōchō District of Tokyo

After downing a second Jupiter Burger, Jace and Godou wrapped up their time at the restaurant. Not before learning though, Jace was no longer permitted to participate in the challenge at that particular Galaxy Burger. Or any future challenge. Jace, while annoyed, was not too upset by the ban. He wasn't planning to be in Japan long enough for it to matter anyway.

It was later in the evening when the duo was making their way back to the Kusanagi residence. Or at least Godou thought so. Jace languidly was going in the opposite direction Godou had indicated.
"Jace-san you're going the wrong way." Godou called out. When Jace didn't stop but kept going down a side alley Godou wondered what the towering teen was doing. Jace looked back over his shoulder, then signaled with two fingers for the Kusanagi heir to follow him. Godou knew Jace didn't do things without a reason, so he knew the Campione had purpose to go wherever he was going. Godou quickly followed behind.

It wasn't until later that Godou absently noted that the back alley they were in was devoid of humans, besides him and Jace. Once the duo was sufficiently inside the back alley that the main road was no longer visible, Jace looked around. He nodded his head, satisfied with the surroundings.

"Okay this will do." Jace intoned.

"Uh, Jace-san why are we back here?" Godou inquired.

Jace turned to fully face the Kusanagi heir, his expression dour. His eyes were steel, not unlike when he faced down the Verethragna cultists. Godou knew something serious was going on the moment he locked gazes with those steely amber irises.

"Because I don't want anyone to get in the way again." Jace stated.

It took Godou a second to figure it out, but the Kusanagi heir wasn't stupid. He knew exactly what Jace was getting at. "You mean our conversation from before."

Jace nodded grimly. "I figured no one would interrupt us here. Now explain what you want from me."

Godou was suddenly unsure of where this conversation was going. Well to be fair he had no idea how to handle this kind of conversation in the first place. But now he was really confused.

"Eh?" Godou ineloquently muttered.

Jace's eyes narrowed in annoyance. "Don't play dumb Godou. You know exactly what I'm talking about. Now spill."

Godou scratched his cheek, he really didn't know what Jace was talking about. "Uh, Jace-san I don't understand. What are you talking about?"

Jace snorted. He wasn't buying Godou's act for one minute. "Drop the act. You clearly want something from me if you've gone to all this trouble. Now tell me what it is. I don't like playing games."

Godou was finally starting to get it. "Jace-san I don't want anything from you." Godou's clear and even response got a reaction out of Jace.

The Campione was pissed.

Jace stomped up to The Kusanagi heir, till he towered over the smaller teen. The Campione spoke with clear anger, the most obvious emotion he'd displayed since Godou had met him.

"Don't lie to me. I've dealt with far better liars than you Godou. You aren't going to fool me. Now start talking."

Godou should have been extremely intimidated. Not just because of the size difference between the two. That was the least of the reasons why Godou should have been intimidated. The Kusanagi heir had seen exactly what the Seventh Campione was capable of. Jace could do horrible things to Godou and there was nothing anyone could do to stop the Campione. Despite all that the Kusanagi heir was unafraid.

"I don't want anything from you." Godou crossed his arms and resolutely stood firm in the face of the angered Campione.

Jace gave an ugly sneer. "Bloody bullshit. If you didn't want anything you wouldn't have brought me half-way around the world. Let me guess you need something from me as a Campione. What, crush your bullies? Lean on the local muscle so they leave you alone? Forget it. I don't owe you anything, I paid my debt in Sardinia."

Godou frowned, the way Jace was talking was so… transactional. "No. I don't want that or anything else. This has nothing to do with owing anyone anything."

"What then? Are you doing this because you pity me?" Jace mocked, as if the suggestion was preposterous.

"Hai." Godou spoke firmly.

Jace stilled. The Campione didn't say anything for a moment. When he did it was less anger and more astonishment coloring his tone. "What?"

Godou took a deep breath then soldiered on. He was in this deep, might as well go all the way.

"Jace-san, you seem too lonely. Or lonesome, I guess. I don't understand your circumstances, but it's obvious you don't have any one you can rely on."

Jace's scowl was deep and foreboding. "Did you just call me lonely? Are you telling me you're doing this because you think I'm lonely?"

"Yeah."

Jace's eyes widened.

His hands shot out. Grasping Godou by the collar of his jacket the Campione heaved the Kusanagi heir into the air. Godou's feet dangled above the ground. It took a few seconds for Godou's brain to register what exactly had just happened. When he finally caught up with reality, Godou realized that his face was level with Jace's.

"You're pitying me? That's rich. Considering I can break you in half." Jace threatened.

Godou didn't gulp at the threat. The battles against Heretic gods had been terrifying. This though…

"You won't." Godou unshakingly said.

"Because?" Jace growled.

"Because you're not a bad person." Godou was more convinced of that than anything he'd ever known. Godou in fact found this position to only be more affirmation of his belief. If Jace had wanted to hurt him he would have done it already. Instead, it seemed the Seventh Campione was trying to scare him more than anything else. This whole thing was like one big charade.

"Did you really just say I'm not a bad person? What is that even supposed to mean. You don't know me." Jace retorted scathingly.

"I know you went out of your way to save everyone in the Mediterranean." Godou retorted.

Jace snorted in disagreement. "I was just paying back the debt I owed to Blandelli and you."

"Maybe. But you could have just left anyway, yet you didn't." Godou countered.

Jace had by this point forgotten the original reason for this argument. Instead, he was just focused on arguing with Godou. "I've hurt and killed people. Not just Heretic Gods, but humans too. You remember the warehouse. Still think I did that for a good reason?"

Godou calmly said yes. "Yeah. You were protecting yourself… and me."

"Oh yeah, you seemed to have a fairly strong opinion of the opposite when that happened. Conveniently change your mind suddenly?" Jace retorted with venom.

Godou frowned. He looked down for a moment. When he looked back up, the firmness of his eyes had not softened. "No. I didn't want anyone to die. I still don't. But. I'm not the one who had to save both of us. I couldn't do a thing. I don't know what it's like to have to fight for my life. You do. I don't think it was wrong to say that at that time. But I'm not an idiot. I can see that sometimes you have to make hard choices and there's no good outcome where everyone gets along. I learned that with Melqart-kami. I'm sorry for insulting you back then."

"Then you admit—" Jace began only to be cut off by Godou.

"No. I still think you shouldn't casually kill someone just because it's easier. But like I said. You can't always get along with everyone. Those guys in masks didn't have to try and hurt us. But they did anyway. If not for you I'd be dead right now three times over. You saved me three times when you had nothing to gain out of it. Doesn't sound like something a monster would do to me."
Jace was flabbergasted. For the first time in a long, long time the Campione was at a loss for words. Not just that he didn't want to speak anymore, he literally just didn't know what to say.

When Jace finally spoke it was calmer, the stoicism he regularly displayed returning. "Fine. Let's say I believe what you're saying. What's your goal here then? Show me a bit of kindness and like a kicked dog I'll magically turn around and be happy."

Godou shook his head in the negative. "No. I don't know what you've been through, and I seriously doubt a few encouraging words are going to fix whatever is bothering you. But I think a good start is for you to have someone you can rely on. Since you clearly don't."

Jace scowled, but far less viciously than in his prior anger fueled state. "Meaning what?"

"I suppose… I want to be your friend." Godou resolutely stated.

The statement had the most pronounced effect on Jace so far. He dropped the Kusanagi heir, causing Godou to stumble before righting himself. When Godou looked back up Jace's stoic face hadn't been replaced with fresh outrage, but rather bafflement.

"My friend? You want us to be friends?" Jace questioned, thinking he had misheard for a moment.

Godou confirmed his intention. "Yeah, I think you need one. And after everything you did you deserve at least one."

Jace stood unmoved for several moments. Godou wasn't sure what was going through the Campione's mind, but he hoped Jace would not dismiss him out of hand. When Jace finally reacted, it was… not the reaction the Kusanagi heir was expecting.

Jace placed a hand to his forehead as if he had a massive headache, massaging his brow. "You're not lying. You're bloody fucking serious, you want to be friends. I can't believe what I'm hearing. Friends he says."

Godou allowed Jace a few more moments of rambling about how ridiculous the proposal was, then he interrupted. "I'm not giving up Jace-san. So, what do you say?"

Jace gave an aggrieved sigh, dropping his hand. He had an affronted look on his face as if Godou's presence was painful to look on. "I say you're insane." Jace shook his head side to side, in a disbelieving manner. The Campione had never met an individual that claimed to want to associate with someone after being threatened by the very person who they were trying to cozy up to. Well, at least not one who was genuine. He'd met and drove off plenty of fakers. He'd met plenty of weirdos as well. But he'd never met someone as strange as Godou Kusanagi. The young man claimed to want nothing to do with the supernatural or danger. Yet here he was courting a major source of both. Godou wasn't lying though, Jace unfortunately had to admit this as being true. So, Jace could only conclude the Kusanagi heir was insane.

Jace stared down at Godou. Though this time instead of a gaze meant to intimidate, the stare was more one of appraisal. The Campione was reassessing his opinion of the Kusanagi heir. Jace had thought of Godou as a naïve, sheltered, brat who knew nothing of the world. Jace didn't find his prior guess to be inaccurate. But the Kusanagi heir had guts. He'd placed his life on the line to aid Jace on multiple occasions. He'd deliberately gone out of his way to assist him and Blandelli, despite his fear, and when he had no other reason to than his own convictions. Jace, begrudgingly, had to respect the Kusanagi heir's resolve.

That was the strangest thing. Jace respected few people, he could count the number on one hand. That number now included Erica Blandelli and Godou Kusanagi. This strange state of subverted expectations left Jace uncertain. Normally he'd just walk away from a faker or demolish anyone attempting to take advantage of him. Godou was neither. In truth the Seventh Campione had never faced a situation like this. No one had ever wanted to be his friend without some string attached.

Fine, Jace thought. If Godou wanted to be his friend, he wouldn't stop the Kusanagi heir. It didn't change a thing. Jace himself had no interest in being friends.

"Whatever. I'm tired of this conversation. Just get us back to your place." The Campione ordered, making it clear he was done with the conversation.

Godou wanted to press harder but thought better of it. If Jace wasn't outright denying the suggestion there was a chance he might agree. So, the Kusanagi heir just needed to be patient.

Godou turned around leading the way out of the back alley. Jace followed, noting how the salary man who'd taken a smoke at the entrance to the back alley immediately left upon seeing the duo. Jace in a less than stellar mood glared at the salary man, who he suspected of being one of their tails. The man paled, before hurrying away. When Godou looked back, Jace waved him off, telling him to just keep going. Godou sensing it was better to just let Jace simmer down, proceeded forward.

()

It was an hour later, due to heavy pedestrian traffic, that the duo found themselves at the Kusanagi residence. The mood within the Kusanagi residence was dour the duo found. Shizuka was arguing with her grandfather. The youngest Kusanagi's sharp tongue was heard from an adjacent hallway from the living room, a tell-tale indicator of her volume level.

"Ojii-san, we shouldn't be dealing with those guys! Just call the police. This is what they're for!"

Ichiro, in contrast to his granddaughter's fiery disposition, was sitting calmly. The Kusanagi elder sighed gently, then addressed Shizuka. "Shizuka-chan calling the police would do no good. Unless they've committed some crime they can't make an arrest. And their kind aren't so careless to casually make such a mistake."

"But!" Shizuka began to protest, but stopped when she caught sight of her brother and Jace entering the room. Instead, she swiftly implored her brother to help her case. "Onii-chan, tell Ojii-san that we need to do something!"

Godou stopped just beyond the threshold to the living room, when Shizuka called out to him. The Kusanagi heir rather than looked surprised, he grimaced as if he already knew what Shizuka was asking and did not find the subject fond. "Ojii-san did those guys come back?"

Ichiro sighed; he was going to tell his grandson about the encounter later but had been hoping to avoid revealing it to their guest. "Hai, Godou. Unfortunately, they did."

After hearing the affirmation, Godou put on an emotion he'd only seen briefly donned just before the battle with Melqart.

Anger.

"Again?! But I thought you told them no. Shizuka's right, we need to call the police. This is harassment plain and simple." The Kusanagi heir's words were unusually fiery.

Ichiro merely sighed at his grandson's words. "Godou, what would I tell them? We need more of a case before the police have cause to act." The Kusanagi elder switched his gazed from Godou to Jace, shifting his expression to one of general cheer. "Never mind that, Jace-kun, did you and Godou finally eat your fill? I remember constantly being hungry at your age."

Godou frowned but understood his grandfather's intentions. The Kusanagi elder did not want to include their guest in the issue they had been discussing. The Kusanagi heir took a seat at the low sitting table across from his grandfather. Jace decided to follow suit, sitting to the left of Godou.

"Yeah. Godou actually has good taste, that Jupiter Burger challenge was good." Jace opted to ignore the prior conversation. He wasn't interested in the Kusanagi family's affairs.

"That's good to hear. I hope your first day in Japan was memorable." Ichiro stated.

"More than I was expecting at the very least." Jace dryly stated, glancing at Godou.

The Kusanagi heir merely smirked. It was against his natural character, but Godou was proud that he had defied the Campione's expectations.

Ichiro saw the byplay and decided to press further. "Oh? Seems you and Godou enjoyed yourselves. Well, I hope tomorrow brings more fond memories for you. What are your plans for tomorrow?"

"Leave for Russia." Jace casually said.

A moment of silence enveloped the table.

"Nani?" Godou called out.

Jace coolly stared down the Kusanagi heir. "I'm leaving for Russia tomorrow. I don't see any reason to stay longer. Besides I'd hate to overstay my welcome." Jace was tired of dealing with Godou and his fanciful notions. The Campione had originally planned to stay at least another day. But that plan was thrown out the window along with any enjoyment Jace was having of the trip.

"Jace-san, you're not burdening anyone. You don't have to leave so soon." Godou denied. He didn't want Jace to leave so soon.

"Godou's right Jace-kun. You're welcome to stay here, I won't turn a friend of Godou's away." Ichiro reinforced his grandson's words.

Jace scowled at the implication of him being Godou's friend. It seems he needed to finally disabuse the Kusanagi family of that idea. "Friend? If you knew my past you wouldn't want anything to do with me. Bloody hell you'd tell me to pack right now." Jace said matter of factly.

"What do you mean Jace-kun?" Ichiro, confused by the statement, asked for clarification.

Jace crossed his arms, his expression growing stern. "I mean I'm a criminal."

"A criminal, what are you some kind of thug?" Shizuka skeptically asked.

"Shizuka don't be rude! Jace-san isn't that kind of person." Godou aghast rebuked his sister. "Gomen Jace-san." Godou bowed low to Jace in apology.

"Jace-kun, having a few ill choices in life isn't grounds to call yourself a criminal. I made a few poor decisions at your age. We all make mistakes." Ichiro chimed in.

Jace did not bat an eye at either Kusanagi. "No. She's right." The Campione calmly refuted Godou and Ichiro. "I've performed all manner of illegal activity in Russia, been doing it for years. You could call me a career criminal." The Campione stuck out one finger for each type of crime he'd committed. "Larceny, robbery, assault, perjury, I've done them all. I've committed thousands of illegal acts in a decade."

Jace noted the reactions from each Kusanagi. Shizuka was at a loss, the normally opinionated girl quiet. Ichiro's eyes had gone wide, the elderly man's expression one of disbelief. Even Godou for all his prior bravado had nothing to say. Godou had been right when he said he knew nothing of the Campinone's circumstances. Jace was grimly amused by the dawning realization of the Kusanagi heir.

Shizkua was the first to recover, her normal fire burning bright and hot. "Onii-chan what kind of guy did you invite to our house?! He's saying he's a criminal!"

Ichiro's face went into a stern line, none of his prior joviality to be found. "Armell-san are you being truthful? Just what kind of crowd did you mingle with to get involved in such acts at a young age." The sudden formality was not lost on Jace. Good he thought. At least now they were finally taking this seriously.

"The Russian mafia." Jace replied stoically.

"Mafia?" Ichiro was unfamiliar with that term.

Jace elaborated, "It's the equivalent of your Yakuza. A network of criminal enterprise." A wry smile crossed Jace's face. "Honestly, they're a lot more vicious than your Yakuza. And I was one bloody hell of an enforcer. Imagine that and you have an understanding of just what kind of man you invited into your home."

Ichiro paled. He could imagine it well.

Jace had thought things were going well. The Kusanagi family finally understood just what kind of man they had invited into their home. Now Godou would finally realize he had no idea what he was talking about and finally put away his ridiculous notions. Except the Kusanagi heir had his own ability to subvert expectations. At least Jace's. Because what Godou said next did not align with the predictable thing to say.

"Jace-san why were you part of the Russian mafia?" Godou was abnormally calm. Oh, he was surprised. He had no way of knowing Jace's past. The Campione had been too enigmatic about it. But that made Godou all the more curious about said past.

"Because it was the only way to survive. A street urchin doesn't have a lot of options." Jace said dismissably as if the question did not matter.

To Godou it mattered a great deal. It finally clicked in the Kusanagi heir's head. Jace's attitude, his actions, his past. All of that finally made sense now. "Jace-san I'm so sorry."

Shock plastered itself across the faces of the rest of the room's occupants. That was the last thing they had expected.

Jace spoke first, that same irritation and befuddlement form their prior conversation returning ten-fold. "Sorry? What in the nine bloody hells are you talking about?!" The most infuriating part of it, Godou still had the pitying look on his face.

The Kusanagi heir spoke steadily, as if trying to make sure he was understood perfectly. "Jace-san, you were right when you said I don't understand your circumstances. I'm so sorry you had to do all that to survive. You deserved better." Jace's mouth hung open, for the second time today he was flabbergasted. Godou seeing this continued. "I knew you had a hard life, but I didn't think it was this bad. You really do need a friend… way more than I realized. I'm not that good of a choice, but please allow me to be your friend."

Jace's expression was one of pure bafflement. "Your still one that?! After everything I just said you still think this is a good idea?" The Campione's expression shifted from bafflement to sternness tinged with just a hint of anger. "I'm part of the Russian mafia. I prey on people for a living. Don't you get that. Why are you still trying for the impossible?"

Godou wasn't deterred. "Because you're not a bad person. Everyone deserves a chance. After everything you've done in Sardinia you don't deserve to just go down that path where you're always hurt and alone."

A sudden raucous burst of laughing snapped Jace and Godou's gaze away from each other. Ichiro was the one to blame for the interjection. Seeing he had everyone's attention, Ichiro smiled grandfatherly. When he spoke, it was full of a wisdom that came only with age. "Jace-kun, I don't know what you've gone through. I don't know you very well. But I do trust my grandson. Godou is a good judge of character. If he trusts you then I believe in, you as well." A sly expression overtook the Kusanagi elder. "Besides if you were as bad a person as you attempt to make yourself out, you wouldn't have said a thing. I think you wanted to be kicked out because you thought you were taking advantage of us."

One of Jace's eyes started twitching. This… was not how he had imagined this conversation going. "Really? I tell you all of that and that's what you decide to do with it. I don't believe it." Jace turned to Shizuka. The youngest Kusanagi was the most skeptical of the bunch. Surely, she would see reason and demand Jace be evicted.

"I agree with Onii-chan and Ojii-san."

Or not.

"Nah, if you were such a bad guy, I doubt you'd save Onii-chan, especially with how annoying he can be." Shizuka said with an unquestionable air of certainty.

"Oi." Godou was indignant at the insult.

Jace was at a loss. He was utterly unsure of what to do. The thought of simply just getting up and leaving the Kusanagi household came to mind. But that would be too much like running away. He hated running away. He could keep arguing, but unless he was willing to do something to harm the Kusanagi family their opinion no matter how wrong wouldn't change. They were just too stubborn. Jace just couldn't bring himself to harm them. It was part of why he had attempted to scare Godou earlier. Jace had hurt plenty of people before. But never anyone that had done right by him. And the Kusanagi family ironically, despite the uncomfortable position they'd put him in, were treating him the best anyone had in a decade.

Jace sighed deeply, the weight of a decade of pain and suffering roiling within him. All that experience told him to not get involved any deeper. All that would lead to was pain, regret, and hate. It had happened every other time the Seventh Campione attempted to get close to another human being in the past decade. Jace held no hope this would be any different. Maybe the Kusanagi family was different. Maybe they were just fools with too high of hopes. Jace had given up on hope a long time ago.

Yet. Jace had been alone a long time. He had not chosen such a path. It had been forced upon him. Jace did not want to be forced into anything. He despised when his hand was forced beyond his control. In this moment Jace realized, if there was ever a chance to forge a new path, one of his own makings, it was now. The question was, did the Campione want that.

Deep in his heart, Jace examined his decision to be a lone wolf. It had not been a natural calling. The Campione was not like Godou, where he thrived in interacting with people. Yet to be all alone had been a decision of need not preference. Jace had wanted to survive, so he had needed to harden his heart in order to do so. He had survived betrayal after betrayal only because the Campione had precisely trusted no one. Yet. To survive his encounters against Verethragna and Melqart Jace had been required to do the opposite and place trust in another. The Kusanagi heir had stood at Jace's side despite his fear. Godou had been reliable when against all odds he should have been a weak link. Jace realized, with shock, that he could trust Godou. The Kusanagi heir was the first person he could trust in over a decade.

If Godou could be trusted, what remained to blockade this possibility. Jace numbly realized all that stood in the way was himself. It came down purely to what Jace was willing to risk. Honestly the risk was low. The Kusanagi family had no way of taking what was his. They could not steal his money, disappearing like a ghost; they were rooted where they were. His newfound abilities as a Campione were either unknown to them and/or beyond their reach. They could not hurt him because of his status as a Campione, even if they wanted to. Jace kept reaching for reasons, but they kept evaporating like a mirage.

Did Jace find Godou or his family intolerable? As annoying as Godou's naivete had been it had been overshadowed by the Kusanagi heir's sincere nature. Godou was honestly pleasant to be around, his upbeat personality charming in a way. Add in his courage in the face of danger, and the Kusanagi heir was solidly dependable. As for Ichiro and Shizuka they were not deal breakers. Ichiro was the more pleasant to be around, his cheerful nature and aged wisdom good to have around. The Kusanagi elder's kindness of opening his home to Jace had not gone unnoticed. Shizuka was a mixed bag. The youngest Kusanagi had scolded Jace several times, which he found annoying. But the girl was honest in her opinions and actions, a refreshing dynamic compared to what Jace was used to.

Jace found no absolute negative as to why he could not accept Godou's proposal.

It came down solely to what Jace wanted.

And.

Jace found he was tired of being alone. At least enough to take a chance on Godou.

"Fine. You win Godou. We can be… friends." Jace did not look at the Kusanagi heir when he spoke, pointedly looking down.

A winning smile played across Godou's features. The Kusanagi heir felt a sudden elation well up within him. Godou was a people person, he genuinely liked helping people. And he knew without a doubt at this moment he was doing the greatest service he had ever done for another. "You won't regret this Jace-san. I promise."

Jace finally looked up a dubious expression on his face. "That remains to be seen. I'm going to try not to get my hopes up to high." Jace might have conceded defeat, but it did not mean he had enthusiasm as a result.

Shizuka crossed her arms, a little dubious about these circumstances herself. She did have some reservations about allowing a self-proclaimed career criminal in their home. "You sure sound enthused Armell-san. Try not to overdo it." Shizuka's dry tone garnered an eyeroll from the Campione.

"Considering I've been bloody screwed over by everyone who ever claimed to be my friend before, this is the maximum enthusiasm level I can manage. Or would you rather I start into song about how bloody happy I am?" Jace deadpanned.

"Uh, no?" Shizuka distractedly said. Thoughts of Jace pulling a mic out of nowhere and suddenly bursting into song came unbidden to the youngest Kusanagi's mind. Said imagination involved the normally dour Jace singing a contradictorily upbeat song while surrounded by furry dancing mascots. She found the thoughts equally parts strange and weird.

Ichiro chuckled at the reddening of his granddaughter's cheeks. It was rare to see Shizuka so flustered.

Jace sighed, much more shallowly than before but it was still weary. He supposed it was a good thing that the Kusanagi family was genuinely happy. Not that he felt much elation. The Campione for his part was feeling unnaturally tired. He felt drained enough that not even his enhanced Campione constitution was enough to keep him feeling energized. He decided therefore that it was time to bring a close to today. "Alright, we're friends now. Yay." Jace rose up from his seated position. "I've had enough for today, so I'm taking a shower then going to bed. You can do what you want." Jace departed after Ichiro and Shizuka imparted their well wishes for a good night's rest.

Godou smiled at the retreating back of the Seventh Campione. It was a huge step getting Jace to accept his offer of friendship, even if said Campione acted like it did not matter. Now, he just needed to show Jace that having a friend was worthwhile.

()

The water cascaded over Jace's muscular frame. The warm water was near boiling, yet it felt no more than a pleasant warmth to the Campione. Jace had always prefered his showers hot, yet he'd turned it up a notch to what should have been scalding. Still there was no discomfort, let alone pain. He chalked up his resilience to being a Campione.

"Bloody hell. What am I doing. I should have just left." Jace spoke to himself. While he had agreed to Godou's proposal, he had massive reservations about it still. Jace hadn't been lying when he had proclaimed to have been poor outcomes with all the past attempts at close interpersonal relationships. Yet here he was, entangled in another one.

"I swear if this blows up in my face again…" Jace trailed off, remembering all the failed past relationships. Ironically enough Jace realized, this time Godou was unlikely to be the one to wreck this relationship. Jace was the one with the poorest intentions this time around. A snort escaped the Campione at the irony. He did not have hope for this relationship. He had no idea how to be a friend. Jace suspected that after a few weeks even Godou's resolve would break at dealing with his normal self. The Kusanagi heir in Jace's mind was just too much of a polar opposite for their personalities not to clash.

That didn't mean Jace was going to deliberately make the relationship fail. Jace hardly considered himself a good man, but he was a man of his word. For all Jace could lie, when he sincerely promised something, he kept to it. Which meant Jace needed to at least try to match Godou's sincerity. The Seventh Campione wondered if that would be his greatest challenge to date. Slaying gods seemed easy in comparison. At least that was straightforward.

"Mother, just what have I gotten myself into." Jace whispered softly, soft enough no one would ever hear him over the rush of the water.

()

It was just after 10:00 p.m. that Goduo and Jace settled down into bed.

Jace did not say much once he left the shower. Instead, he headed straight for their shared room and readied for bed. By the time Godou himself was prepared for bed, Jace was already seemingly asleep beneath the covers of his futon.

Godou sat on the edge of his bed, looking down at the sleeping(?) Seventh Campione. "Jace-san?" The Kusanagi heir gently called out. If Jace was asleep the call wouldn't awaken him. But if he was, Godou wanted to talk a little.

A sigh emanating from Jace revealed that he was indeed not asleep. Jace pondered simply telling Godou to go to sleep and let him be. But if they were supposedly friends now, Jace was obligated to not just dismiss the Kusanagi heir simply because it was more convenient for him.

"What is it Godou?" Jace calmly, albeit tiredly, uttered.

"I wanted to ask you something." Godou stated.

Jace cracked open one eye to look at the Kusanagi heir. "Such as?" Jace inquired.

Godou became serious, speaking as if he was breaching a sensitive topic. "You really don't have any family, right?"

"I do not." Jace neutrally responded, giving away no emotion.

Godou frowned. "What happened to your parents?"

Jace did not say anything for a few moments. When he did it was reservedly. "They're dead."

Godou's frown deepened. If what Jace said was anything to go by, he had been without family for a decade. "You said you were a street urchin, they died when you were young right?"

"Yes." Jace succinctly responded.

"How did they die?" Godou knew the question was invasive but considering Jace's unusually quiet disposition the Kusanagi heir suspected it had important ramifications on his new friend.

"Drop it Godou." Jace's tone made it clear he did not want to talk about that particular subject. Godou knew better than to press harder, Jace would only refuse to speak or worse it would snap their very new, very delicate friendship.

Godou decided to stay on the subject of family, though avoiding the topic of Jace's parents. "What about siblings?" Godou gently asked.

Jace responded quickly enough that it relieved Godou's fear he had broached another taboo topic.

"None. I'm an only child. And before you ask, my parents were as well. No aunts, uncles, or close cousins. I never met my grandparents; they were dead before I was born. Any relative I have is so distantly related I would need a DNA test to see if were related." Jace answered seeing the incoming question in Godou's eyes.

"I see. I'm sorry Jace-san." Godou solemly said.

Jace snorted at the apology. "There you go again apologizing for things you have no right to."

Godou smiled sheepishly. He just felt the need to say something, since it seemed life was all too cruel to Jace Armell.

Jace hummed in thought. If they were talking about family Jace reasoned he might as well, ask about Godou's. "What about you? I've met your grandfather and sister. Is there any Kusanagi I've yet to meet?"

A sad smile formed on Godou's face. "My Obaa-san, Ojii-san's wife, died two years ago. She and Ojii-san raised Shizuka-chan and me. She was strict, but kind. I miss her and I know Ojii-san and Shizuka-chan do as well."

"I take it you were close?" Jace inquired.

"Yeah, we were." The fond tone Godou used told Jace that the Kusanagi heir loved his departed grandmother. Jace could relate in his own way.

"I see. I'm… glad you had a good relationship with her." The Seventh Campione said awkwardly. Jace knew it came out weird, but he did not know how to say such a thing more smoothly. He was used to mocking people or intimidating them. Attempting to discuss personal feelings was far outside his comfort zone.

Godou fortunately wasn't offended, merely taking it in stride. "Me too. She was… a really wonderful person."

"What about your parents? I haven't heard a word about them the entire time I've been here." Jace decided to soldier on in the conversation. He was already in that deep and he was morbidly curious. If the Kusanagi family was this close, he had to wonder where the middle generation of the family was.

A decidedly unpleasant frown graced Godou's features. It was not an angry expression, but it was certainly a grim one. "They're alive, but there not here. I guess you could say they're usually away on business." The bitter tone Godou used, told Jace all he needed to know. Apparently the Kusanagi heir had his own issues involving his parents.

Jace did not press. They did not need to have an emotional heart to heart today. Honestly Jace would prefer it if they did not. He was barely up to this, let alone spilling his guts too someone he had known for all of a week.

Godou frowned, though not because of the thoughts of his parents. The Kusanagi heir just couldn't believe Jace had raised himself. Someone had to have taken care of him at least for a while. "Jace-san did you really have no one else growing up?"

"Godou why are you pressing so hard on this?" Jace tiredly asked.

"Because I want to understand you. There's so much I don't know about you, that it's impossible to be someone you can rely on. I just want to be the friend you trust." Godou empathetically stated.

Jace sighed. Godou really was a sincere fool. "Fine. But this is the last question of the night. Got it." The Campione sternly said.

Godou nodded his head in acquiescence. "Right."

Jace slowly started, speaking carefully. "No, I wasn't completely alone. Later, years after my parent's death, I encountered a man who would become… what's the term? Overseer? Let's go with that. I never learned his real name; everyone simply called him Englishman."

"Why?" Godou asked.

"Because he was an Englishman among Russians, so he stood out amongst the crowd we shared." Jace's tone became thoughtful as he began remembering Englishman. "I wouldn't call him a parent, as saying he raised me was a stretch. He never opened his home to me, nor protected me from the dangers of the world. No. But he did teach me useful skills to survive, how to operate in a world of criminals. I suppose you could say inadvertently he's responsible for continued existence."

Godou processed everything that Jace said. The detached way Jace spoke of the only apparent individual who put any care in his life, said volumes. Godou's worse assessment of Jace's circumstances were heart wrenchingly true he realized. Jace was no monster, he was an unfortunate soul who had been beaten down by life, forced to engage in reprehensible actions just to survive. Godou didn't know if he could get Jace on a better path. But he had to try.

"Jace-san, I promise I won't let you down. I'll help you see a brighter tomorrow." The Kusanagi heir stated with as much sincerity as he could muster. He hoped that it would reach the recalcitrant Campione.

Jace refrained from snorting in recrimination. He didn't believe he needed saving, but he decided not to mock the Kusanagi heir's resolve. He could at least respect Godou's sincerity if nothing else. "Yeah." Jace's emotional exhaustion was utter now, leaving him too drained to continue the conversation. "I'm going to sleep." Jace closed his eyes.

Seeing the conversation was over Godou bid Jace a good night. "Sleep well, Jace-san."

"Yeah. Good night Godou." Jace drowsily said, before falling asleep.

Godou smiled one last time, grateful that he had managed to convince the stubborn Campione into becoming friends. The Kusanagi heir then laid down in his own bed and began to drift off in slumber. Thoughts of what tomorrow would bring accompanied the teens as they slept.

() Kusanagi Residence March 25th, 2024

The morning after Jace's revelations the mood within the Kusanagi residence was solemn. Ichiro had mandated an all-hands meeting. Following the Kusanagi elder's demand, Jace, Godou, and Shizuka were seated at the dining room table, with Ichiro at the head. Jace thought this was when the full weight of Ichiro's decision had finally hit the elderly man. The Campione expected the Kusanagi elder to revoke his prior approval and demand Jace leave his home.

That was not quite what happened.

"Jace-kun, I have two conditions if you intend to remain under my roof." Ichiro solemnly stated.

Jace raised an eyebrow, his curiosity peaked. "Conditions?"

"Hai. First, no criminal activity. I won't begrudge you a mistake such as not knowing where it's appropriate to smoke or regulations regarding camera usage in public." Ichiro's countenance turned sharp, his tone becoming one that would accept no argument. "I will not tolerate intentional harm caused to another person. That also includes financial harm, no stealing. The only exceptions I'll allow are self-defense or saving someone else."

Jace had to admit he was impressed with the Kusanagi elder. Few people made such demands of him. "If I can't do that?" Jace tested the Kusanagi elder.

Ichiro did not hesitate. "I'll kick you out and turn you over to the police."

Jace closed his eyes debating the demand. He was not fond of being told what to do. But. He had to respect Ichiro's position. The elderly man should have already turned Jace over to the police once he'd heard of the Campione's past. Yet he had not. He was giving Jace a chance. That was more than Jace expected.

"Alright. I agree." Jace in the end acquiesced. He had never taken much pleasure in criminal activity. It had always been more a matter of necessity than of pleasure when engaging in such actions. The sole exception was when someone had wronged him, and he had taken revenge. Foregoing such behaviors he thought would not be difficult.

Ichiro smiled wanly, pleased at the amiability of the Campione. "Good. Now for the second condition. Jace-kun are you enrolled in school in Russia?"

The question out of left field surprised Jace and the others. Jace crossed his arms, unsure of where the Kusanagi elder was going with this. "No." He rumbled.

Ichiro frowned, displeased by the answer. "I thought so. That simply won't do. Therefore, you will attend high school here in Japan."

"What?" Jace for the second time in as many days was at a loss for words.

Ichiro nodded sagely, "A proper education is paramount for becoming a well-adjusted adult. I won't allow you to miss such an important part of life. Not if you're under my care. Therefore, you'll need to enroll in Jounan High School.

Jace was about to open his mouth and refuse, but something stayed the retort. Jace thought it over for a moment and realized he had no strong feelings about advancing his education. The instability of his life had excluded the possibility of ever attending formal education. Everything Jace knew he'd picked up off the streets, self-taught himself, or learned from Englishman. Jace was unsure of what to do.

Sensing the Campione's indecisiveness, Godou chimed in. "Jace-san I think it's a good idea. You may not use everything you learn in school but it's better to have it than to not, right? And we'll get to enroll together, although you'll probably be in the grade above me. Still, we can join a club together and participate in school festivals. Let's do it."

The Kusanagi heir's enthusiasm was the tipping point for Jace. "Alright. I'll try it out as long as I'm in Japan."

Ichiro smiled good naturedly at Jace, "Excellent, I'll send the paperwork later today. Now I need to open the store and you all have a day of freedom ahead of you." The Kusanagi elder slowly rose up, followed by the three teens.

Ichiro bade the young trio a good day and proceeded to head to the store front. Godou addressed his new friend. "Jace-san is there anything you want to do today?"

"Yeah. Get some new clothes, I'm getting tired of wearing the same three outfits back-to-back." Jace looked down, frowning, as he plucked the hemline of his shirt. The Seventh Campione unfortunately had been forced to make do with the hastily gathered clothes Cappozi had scrounged up on short notice. As a result, the clothes were an ill-fit, only wearable due to tailoring from Cappozi's maids. Jace though was just glad his boots had not been ruined by the intense conflicts he had participated in. While Jace knew that his bare foot was far sturdier than his boots, it was the principle of the thing to not go around barefoot.

"Oh good, I can get a new tea set for tea club. Maybe I'll find one to match Mariya-senpai's, her tea set is just so pretty!" Shizuka spoke up, eager for a day of shopping.

"A tea set?" Jace questioned uncertainly.

Shizuka's gaze became dry, as if testing the much larger teen. "Yeah, a tea set. What, don't they drink tea in Russia?" The youngest Kusanagi said rhetorically.

Jace, catching on, decided to do his usual thing. "Yeah, out of a bottle." Deadpan an answer.

Shizuka in response got fired up. Less so because of the manner in which responded, more so because of what he said. "What?! Are you serious? That's it, later today you're getting a taste of real tea, not that mass produced sludge." Shizuka pointed a finger imperiously at Jace, to make it clear it was going to happen.

Jace was dryly amused by the fact that the short girl thought she could command him. But he had no reason to refuse, besides Jace was curious as to what real brewed tea tasted like. "Okay, sure."

Godou snickered at the exchange but was glad to see that his sister was warming up to the giant of a man.

()

The shopping trip proved quite successful. If there was one thing Tokyo was built for it was business and Jace took full advantage of that fact. In the major metropolitan center, it wasn't a question of whether there was a store that could accommodate the Campione's physique, but of where it was. Jace and co. managed to find an appropriate tall and large clothing store within an hour of setting out. The Campione despite not being an avid shopper took his time in accumulating a new wardrobe.

During this both Godou and Shizuka inputted their own preferences to the Campione.

Shizuka imperiously 'suggested' that Jace should opt for a wardrobe of brighter colors. To the youngest Kusanagi's chagrin, Jace dismissed her input promptly.

Godou suggested he wear something with flair, pointing out several outfits with emblems or imprinted logos/phrases. Jace decided against Godou's recommendation as well. The Campione opted instead to purchase multiple pairs of black combat pants with deep red and blue T-shirts.

Jace was perusing over some belts when he heard Godou walk up behind him. Looking over his shoulder, Jace caught sight of Godou carrying a bundle. The Kusanagi heir lightly smiled seeing the questioning expression on Jace's face.

"Oh this? Well, it's still cold outside so I thought you needed a jacket. I know you said this weather is nothing, but I still wouldn't want you to catch a cold." Godou kindly stated. The Kusanagi heir held out the jacket offering it to Jace. The Campione took the jacket, holding it out in front of him. Jace noted that the jacket was a dark brown and had a zipper rather than buttons. Feeling the texture, Jace was surprised at its toughness.

"This real leather?" Jace questioned.

Godou nodded. "Yeah, I found it in the exotic material section, supposedly it's made from real bear skin. Here, have a look at the back." Godou prompted Jace to turn the jacket around.

Turning the jacket around, Jace was brought face to face with a bear. Not really, but the picture's likeness was spot on enough to match a real bear. Specifically, a Grizzly. Jace had to admit the picture of the bear was phenomenal in its lifelike quality, the savage snarl of the bear portraying its ferocity and dominance.

"Not bad. But why?" Jace while in favor of the shirt did not understand why Godou had picked it up.

"Oh, because of your last name. I mean it does stand for bear-tyrant, right?" Godou said.

Jace's answered slowly saying "It can be translated that way. But how do you know that?" Jace's eyes narrowed realizing he'd never told the Kusanagi heir about the meaning of his surname.

Godou suddenly gained a sheepish expression, responding "I might have done a little research on your family name before we left this morning."

Jace understood exactly what Godou was saying. "You were investigating my background." He accused.

Godou blanched at the Campione's correct estimation. Upon seeing this Jace… sighed. That sigh turned Godou's expression into one of uncertainty. "Jace-san?"

Jace spoke tiredly, with only exasperation coloring his voice. "Godou, if you want to know something about me, ask. If I don't want to talk about it, let the matter lie. Don't go behind my back."

Godou was surprised. That was a far less…. antagonized, response than he had anticipated. Part of him had been sure Jace would express anger at slightly sneaky activity. "Okay, I promise I won't." But he saw no reason to push his luck. The Kusanagi heir decided to return to their shopping trip. "So, do you want me to buy you this?" Godou inquired.

Jace raised an eyebrow. "You're going to buy it? For me? Why?"

"Because you need it and as your friend, I want to make sure you're healthy." Godou said as if it was obvious.

Jace made a strange expression, unsure of what to do with Godou's thoughtfulness. He decided though if Godou was so bent on it, he might as well allow it. "Suit yourself."

Godou smiled lightly, it was a small victory but a victory. Any progress in getting Jace accustomed to relying on others was worthwhile whether it cost money, time, or sweat.

The duo checked out and made their way to Shizuka, who happened to be on the other head of the shopping district.

()

By the end of the day the trio were laden with goods. Shizuka of course found a tea set that was a near perfect match for her Senpai's. Godou scored a limited edition boxed set of manga: HunterXHunter. Jace was carrying the most bags, full of his much-needed clothes, the jacket Godou had gotten him, and a fresh pair of combat boots. Why the store had been selling surplus JSDF supplies, and how he'd actually found boots in his size were beyond Jace. But he wasn't going to question his good luck. The trio had split up after 7:00p.m., with Shizuka heading home as she still had a round of pre-semester schoolwork to finish up. Godou wanted to make full use of the daylight, so he decided to take Jace to a nearby desert shop. Jace didn't have much of a sweet tooth, but he did enjoy the occasional treat.

"So, the specialty of the store is 'bean paste' treats?" Jace asked Godou, the Campione perplexed by the concept of beans being sweet.

Godou nodded his head in affirmation. "Hai. I know it sounds a little strange at first if you've never had it, but the taste of anko is really good. I think you'll enjoy the Dorayaki the most."

"I see. Well, I look forward to it." Jace stated mostly neutrally. But there was a note of curiosity that did not go missed by Godou. The Kusanagi heir wryly smiled.

The duo continued on in silence through the shopping district. Surprisingly foot traffic was light. While the season had yet to warm to comfortable levels, there still should have been a large number of pedestrians. Instead, it was eerily empty on the back streets the duo was using to reach the confectionary. It was so empty that Godou assumed that no one would be around the bend of the alley they were crossing through. As a result, Godou nearly lost his balance when he bumped into a person rounding the corner.

The Kusanagi heir almost toppled, but a steadying hand from Jace kept him from following over. Godou thanked Jace for the assistance, then turned to apologize to the person he had rudely bumped into.

He did not get the chance to. "Hey! Watch where you're walking brat!" An angry, loud, male, voice erupted at Godou.

The Kusanagi heir blinked, surprised by the tone that was so out of character for typical Japanese city life. What Godou saw was a fellow country man. The man, who was clearly in his forties, was dressed in suit pants, but missing a jacket, leaving him in his plaited shirt. The man's face was flushed red. On the opposite side of the man was a woman.

When Godou said nothing for a few seconds, the older man's expression turned from annoyed to angry. "Hey brat! Going to apologize or what?!"

Godou's brain finally clicked into gear. "Ah, gomen. I'm sorry for bumping into you, I didn't think anyone was around the bend." Godou bowed with his apology.

"Tch. Well start thinking with more brain power brat. At that right sweetheart." The man clicked his tongue at Godou, then addressed the woman at his side.

With Godou's attention now on the woman, he realized she had yet to say anything. Upon closer inspection Godou realized the woman looked plainly uncomfortable.

"My name is Sujime. And I told you I just want to go home." The twenty something woman said.

"Don't say that. I'll show you a good time. We'll have some drinks and then who knows…" A lascivious smirk played itself across the belligerent man's face. The man threw his arm around the woman and began walking forward.

The woman for her part vainly attempted to break away, but the belligerent man merely clutched her tighter. It was as they passed by Godou smelled it. It was a unique reeking odor that Godou recognized. The man reeked of booze.

Godou felt something stir inside of him. If he had to place a bet on what to call it, he would merely say indignation. The feeling was hot and roiled in Godou. He understood exactly what was wrong with the couple that had just passed by.

Godou turned to Jace only to find the Campione looking away from the scene. "Jace-san, we should-" Godou began only to be cut off by Jace.

"Should what? Intervene? Not a good idea." Jace's tone was apathetic.

Godou's eyes widened at the callousness. "But she clearly doesn't want to be with that guy! Did you smell that odor?! He's—" Jace once again cut off Godou.

"A drunkard I know, I could tell that without the smell. So, what. What are we supposed to do? Rescue the damsel in distress? If she isn't asking for help you can't even be sure she wants help." Jace's tone was not quite mocking, but the disdain in it shone through.

Godou though instead of being discouraged only got more fired up at the apathy. "She's just afraid. She needs help. If you don't want to help fine, but I'm going to do something." The Kusanagi heir's tone was iron. Godou was disappointed in Jace, he knew the Campione didn't like butting in other people's business, but this was a line too far.

The Kusanagi heir spun around and ran after the distressed woman. Jace was left wondering what had gotten into Godou. In the end Jace decided to follow after the Kusanagi heir. The Campione had a premonition Godou was getting in over his head.

Godou did not have a plan when he ran up to the drunken man. He was acting more on the fiery feeling coursing through his veins than any rational thought. So, when Godou grabbed the man by the arm, the Kusanagi heir merely said what his heart was telling him.

The drunken man looked back with a scowl on his face. When he saw the teen he had berated as a brat his scowl only deepened. "What do you want now brat!" The man shook off Godou's hand, turning around fully to face the Kusanagi heir. The drunken man stumbled slightly as he did so due to his intoxicated state.

Godou did not shout, his tone was more controlled. But it was unusually stern and unyielding. "Let her go."

"Let her go? What are you talking about, the little miss and me are out on a date." The drunken man pulled the passive woman around, gripping her forcefully by the wrist. She squeaked a little from the pressure. "Tell him sweetheart." The drunken man yapped.

"I-I…" The passive woman mumbled without making any real statement.

"See the little miss isn't complaining so I'm not forcing her to do anything. Now scram brat!" The drunken man shouted at Godou.

Godou was unimpressed. He calmly faced the woman and said "Don't worry ma'am. Everything will be alright." He smiled confidently at the woman hoping to reassure her. The woman merely looked away shyly. Godou's smile turned sympathetic, he understood being afraid. He when addressed the drunken man again Godou's smile dropped replaced by a hard line. "Let her go."

The drunken man's anger rose, thoroughly annoyed by Godou's interruption. He grabbed Godou by the collar of his shirt. Fully yelling now, the drunken man laid into Godou. "Or what brat?! You going to make me? Hah, I'd like to see that." Spit flew from the drunken man's mouth, landing on Godou.

Godou did not flinch at the intimidation. The drunken man was several centimeters and a probably over thirty kilograms heavier than him; a good size larger than him. This might have made him afraid once. But after Sardinia, this… was woefully underwhelming in comparison. "I'm not leaving till she is safe. Now leave… and sober up." Godou's nose scrunched up at the foul mixture of booze and unwashed human.

The drunken man's lips peeled back into a snarl, anger having fully overtaken his rationality. He pulled a clenched fist back, then shouted "Damned brat!". The reared fist launched forward.

Godou did not flinch. He stood ready to take the punishment.

The fist aimed for Godou's face never connected though.

All Godou could see was the back of a massive hand in front of his face.

Godou knew that hand. "Jace-san." Godou looked to the owner of the hand, seeing the Campione positioned to the side of him. A smile cracked over the Kusanagi heir's face. Jace had perfect timing.

Jace looked down at Godou, and upon seeing the smile, scowled. "You're insane you know that. Did you even have a plan for when this turned into a fight?" Jace chided the Kusanagi heir.

"None actually, I just did what I thought had to be done." Godou sincerely stated. "Thanks for stepping in."

The Kusanagi heir's sincerity caused Jace to sigh and shake in head. "Bloody insane, wanna be a hero or something." Jace muttered.

During this byplay the drunken man attempted to free his himself from Jace's hold. To no effect; Jace's grip was simply too strong. Tugging uselessly the drunken man started shouting to let him go. "Bastard! Let me go!"

Jace lazily turned an eye toward the drunken man. "Let go? Sure." If the man wanted to be let go, Jace had no qualms about doing so. Though, Jace did wait till the drunkard had all his weight on his back foot before letting go.

The man fell backward, landing with an oomph.

"Oh, the drunk fell down." Jace mocked. "Careful, good way to hurt yourself."

The drunken man stared at Jace. Once he'd recovered from his bearings the drunken man pushed himself to his feet and proceeded to charge the much larger Campione.

Jace, unimpressed with the sloppy run, just waited for the drunkard to close in. Once the drunken man was in range Jace grasped him by the shoulders, halting his advance. Before the drunken man could do anything Jace rammed his right knee into the smaller man's gut. The smaller man gasped; the air forced from his lungs. Jace let go. The man doubled over, grasping his gut. Jace followed up by throwing a downwards punch, angled to the side, smashing his fist straight into the drunken man's cheek.

Jace hadn't put anywhere near his full strength into the blow, still it sent the smaller man back a little less than a meter, straight to the ground. The drunken man was seeing stars, far too dizzying to get back up. Or remember what freight train had slammed into him.

Jace calmly stepped up to the fallen man. Seeing the man was not getting up anytime soon, the Campione decided to add a little more punishment. Jace kicked the man in his gut, ramming the hardened toe of his boot straight into the fallen man's belly. The man flipped over from the impact. Jace did not relent though. He viciously stomped on the man several times.

He did so enough, Godou felt the need to end the punishment.

"Jace-san stop!" Godou shouted at the Campione.

Jace's foot slammed down to the side of the beaten man's head. When the Campione turned around the expression sent a cold chill down Godou's spine. It was a face of vicious delight, as if the Campione had been enjoying the pain he had been administering.

"Why? The bloody bastard was trying to beat the shit out of you. You want me to stop?" Jace roughly called out.

Godou took a deep breath, then spoke firmly. "Hai. He's not a threat anymore. So, you don't need to hurt him anymore."

Jace disagreed. Just as the Campione was prepared to argue. Godou said something that gave the Campione pause.

"Please. Stop." Godou gently called out.

Plenty of people had said please. Plenty had begged for mercy. But. None had ever used the tone that Godou did. As if not asking for himself, but for someone else. Jace was not sure who Godou was asking for. Yet, if he had to take a guess he would say… for the Campione himself.

Jace's expression dropped into a one of pure tiredness, then swiftly a mask of stoicism replaced it. Jace turned his back on the man he had just beat up. He walked back up to Godou. The Campione looked down to Godou and said "He was never a threat. He just needed a good beating. But if you really want me to stop fine."

Godou gave a sigh of relief. That wasn't how he'd wanted things to play out. But as he'd learned, you don't always get what you want. At the very least the woman who they had helped was safe.

"Halt, police!" A sharp voice shouted from the entrance to the alley way.

Jace and Godou looked past the drunken man to see two men in dark blue vests over lighter blue shirts. Godou could not see it from this distance, but Jace's enhanced Campione eyes could make it. On the chests of the two blue clad men were badges saying Officer Takeda and Officer Fujiwara.

The local police had caught the tail end of the scene. Jace sighed. This was not his day.

()

Godou did not know what to expect when the police attempted to detain Jace. Unlike other countries criminals rarely resisted arrest by the police in Japan. Even the yakuza, arguably the most violent groups in Japan, were orderly enough to conduct themselves peacefully when confronted by the cops. Though as Godou was keenly aware, Jace was not one of his fellow countrymen. When confronted with physical force the Campione responded in kind. With lethal intent usually. Godou was concerned that Jace might resort to such tactics if, IF, the police decided to take Jace to a station. But Godou also knew Jace was intelligent and shrewd. The Campione was more than just a violent brute. So, the question of what Jace would actually do, was up in the air.

Godou attempted to intervene before Officer Fujiwara could question Jace. To Godou's surprise, Jace waved him off. Seeing the concern in the Kusanagi heir's eyes caused an unreadable emotion to roll over Jace's face. Whatever it was, Jace told Godou to let him handle the situation. As the police officer closed in, Jace adopted a face of pure stoicism.

"Sir, can you understand me?" Officer Fujiwara asked, unsure if the obvious foreigner could speak Nipponongo.

Too the middle-aged officer's surprise Jace responded in perfect Japanese. "Yes. And yes, I can speak Japanese fluently."

Once the middle-aged officer adjusted to the unexpected fluency of Jace's Japanese, he quickly got down to business. "Sir, I'll need you to explain why you were assaulting that man." The stern tone of the officer was meant to convey the seriousness of the situation. As was the hand quietly placed on the officer's service pistol.

Jace noted both details. Jace could respect the readiness for violence. Though, it would be better preparation, if the police officer had unclasped the latch on his pistol. Not that it really mattered. Jace had no intention of letting the situation involve further violence.

"I was not assaulting that drunkard." Jace stoically responded.

A skeptical expression crossed the officer's face, though he remained reserved. "I see. Then what would you call what you were doing? I hope the explanation is good. Otherwise, sir, I'll have to arrest you for assault of an individual."

"I would call it self-defense." Jace said.

A curious expression flicked across the officer's face. "Self-defense?"

Jace hiked a thumb over his shoulder, indicating Godou. "It's true. He attacked my friend first, I intervened, then he tried to attack me. I just made sure he was no longer a threat."

"Sir… beating a man who is clearly unable to fight back does not make a good case for self-defense." Despite his recriminating words, Officer Fujiwara removed his hand from his service pistol, instead crossing his arms in skepticism. "What does your friend have to say?"

Godou immediately spoke up when called upon. Godou did not want Jace arrested for doing a good deed. This was his chance to help his new friend out after all the good Jace had done. "Officer, Jace-san is telling the truth. That man was accosting a lady, she didn't want anything to do with him, but he wouldn't take no for an answer. I told him to let her go and he tried to take a swing at me. That's when Jace-san intervened."

Godou was a persuasive individual, good with people. His honest nature often got people on his side, his sincerity touching their hearts. As a result, the first hints of the officer understanding the truth of the earlier altercation were beginning to show on his face. "I see. What's your name sir?"

"Kusanagi. Kusanagi Godou." Godou stated.

Officer Fujiwara nodded his head. "Kusanagi-san, can you explain why your friend was continuing to assault this man when he could clearly no longer fight back?"

Godou chuckled nervously, sheepishly rubbing the back of his head. "Ah, Jace-san tends to get carried away. He meant well."

The officer's expression was dry. "I see. Well, your testimonies match up at the very least. But we still don't have enough to clear you of suspicion sir. I'll have to take you into custody. Sir if you'll follow me." Officer Fujiwara took out a pair of cuffs and began walking toward Jace.

Godou had to do something. The Kusanagi heir knew that if Jace was taken into custody he would be charged for sure. The laws regarding self-defense in Japan were not kind to those claiming self-defense. Despite the truth of what Jace was doing, the additional punishment he had dished out would be looked down on fiercely. Not just would Jace be jailed for an unknown amount of time, Godou was convinced his grandfather would bar Jace from his home. If all that passed, Jace would leave Japan all the more bitter than ever.

Godou needed to do something.

Wait. That was it!

"Wait!" Godou shouted.

Both Jace and Officer Fujiwara looked at Godou bewildered.

"The lady we rescued! She hasn't given her testimony! Ask her what happened, she was a victim!" Godou desperately rushed out.

The officer paused. He had to admit the teen was correct, the young lady standing off to the side was likely a witness to what had transpired. He needed to collect all the testimony as was available if he was going to make an arrest. He put away the cuffs, for now, and walked over to the young lady.

"Ma'am, I need to ask you a few questions. Would you be willing to answer them?" Officer Fujiwara gently asked seeing the distraught expression on Sujime's face.

The young lady gulped and stuttered a few words. "I-I-I".

Godou wanted to curse. She must be in shock over what happened.

Jace was unamused. The Campione seen the indecisiveness the young lady was displaying before. Too scared to say anything, lacking backbone to do anything. He did not expect her to be of any help. "No point in asking her. Sorry Godou, she won't say a word. Too bloody scared of her own shadow to do anything." Jace mocked.

The young lady locked eyes with Jace. Something in her brown eyes seemed to snap at Jace's recrimination. Because instead of stuttering, she shouted. Quite loudly.

"I'm not a victim!" Sujime began breathing heavily. Everyone blinked in shock at the sudden fire from the seemingly scared woman. Sujime continued, still shouting, "I didn't want to go with him, but we wouldn't take no for an answer! He just kept saying we'll have a good time, with that creepy smile on his face. He was so drunk, every word he spoke all I could smell was booze!"

Sujime paused, allowing what she had said to be processed. A sharp scowl appeared on Officer Fujiwara's face. "I see. Miss, when did these men show up?"

"Just when the drunk said we were getting close to his apartment. The shorter one ran up to him and told him to let go of me. The drunk got in his face and told him to leave. Kusanagi-san wouldn't though, he told me everything would be okay. That's when the drunk tried to hurt Kusanagi-san. He couldn't though, the tall one stopped him." Sukjime stopped, breathing heavily.

Godou helpfully filled in the remaining details. "The drunkard kept charging after that, so Jace-san had to knock him out."

Officer Fujiwara nodded grimly. "I see." Turning around behind him he shouted to his partner. "Takeda-san! Do you think the unconscious one was imbibing alcohol?!"

Officer Takeda took a whiff of the air and grimaced. "Ugh. He reeks worse than a fox who got into the sake jar!"

Officer Fujiwara turned back around, directly facing Jace, his expression severe.

"Jace-san was it?" The middle-aged officer asked.

Jace raised an eyebrow, in curiosity. "Correct, but you'd probably prefer to call me Armell. Jace is my personal name."

Officer Fujiwara nodded again, "Armell-san then. I think I understand the situation. As it stands, I don't believe I have enough probable cause to arrest you. I would still like you to come down to the station." Seeing Godou and Sujime's incoming protest, the middle-aged officer quickly added "Just to answer some questions. We need statements from each party. It's just a formality."

Jace rumbled a bit but relented. "If you absolutely must. Very well."

A grim smile briefly flashed across Officer Fujiwara's face, before fading behind a stoic line.

After an ambulance arrived to pick up the unconscious drunk, the two officers, Godou, Jace, and Sujime headed to the nearest police station.

Following more formal questioning, the police Sergeant handling the case decided not to hold Jace in the station. Just as he was about to exit the station Jace heard a voice call out to him.

"Armell-san."

Jace looked over his shoulder to see none other than Officer Fujiwara. The middle-aged officer walked over to Jace. Jace assumed the officer wanted to warn him off of causing more trouble. Jace snorted internally at the thought. Just another self-righteous cop.

Which was why what Officer Fujiwara had to say surprised Jace greatly.

"Armell-san. I wanted to thank you." The middle aged officer expressed sincerely.

Jace's eye's narrowed. Skeptical he asked, "Why? Didn't I disturb the peace?" Jace had only been in Japan for a few days, but he could already tell how it valued peace and uniformity.

Officer Fujiwara nodded, not disagreeing. "Indeed, you did. But you did so to protect others. Not many would do so."

"So, I decided to stop my… friend… from getting beat up. You're really okay with the fact I sent someone to the hospital?" Jace asked with some disdain.

An indulgent smile briefly lit up Officer Fujiwara's face. "I'd prefer it if you had restrained yourself a bit. But. I shudder to think of what would have happened to that woman if you two youngsters hadn't stepped in. So, yes, I'm okay with you acting of your own accord even if it's legally frowned on."

The earnestness in the middle-aged officer's voice gave Jace pause. He had dealt with plenty of police officers over the past decade. Most of the interactions had been decidedly unpleasant. Usually accompanied by a lecture, a stern warning against repeat criminality, and a dismissal of Jace's entire existence. Usually, Jace found them to be hypocrites, performing their own brand of illegality to get what they wanted. None had ever thanked Jace before.

Jace wasn't sure what to do with this. "You're… welcome?" Jace said uncertainly.

Officer Fujiwara smirked, a little color shading his otherwise stoic tone. "It's proper to thank someone for doing a good deed. Now, that said I don't want to see you back in this station anytime soon Armell-san. Think you can manage that."

Jace to his chagrin realized the officer was teasing him. He huffed, saying "Yeah, I can do that. Alright, bye." The Campione ended the uncomfortable conversation.

Jace exited the station just to see Godou being hugged by the woman they had rescued. Jace walked up to Godou after the woman let go of the Kusanagi heir and left. Startling Godou, Jace asked what that was about.

Blushing, Godou said, "Oh, Sujime-san just wanted to thank me for helping her. I said she didn't need to, but she insisted."

Jace nodded in acceptance. "I see. I guess the pretty lady hugging you was just a bonus, right?" Jace dryly asked.

Godou blushed harder, quickly stammering denials. "That was Sujime-san's idea! I-I just didn't have the heart to tell her no."

Jace just nodded in acceptance. "Gotcha." That was all he said even though his tone implied he thought otherwise.

Godou was about to stammer out more denials, but a thought came to his mind. "Are, are you teasing me?" Godou suspiciously asked.

Jace shrugged noncommittedly. "Maybe. Maybe I'm getting payback for the trouble you caused me. Who knows."

Godou's expression became aggrieved. "Jace-san." The Kusanagi heir cried.

()

Godou was nervous all the way back to the Kusanagi residence. Specifically, because of what his grandfather might do. Technically they had not broken the rule laid out by Ichiro. In fact, they followed it to the letter. Not only had they been saving someone else, but the drunkard also threw the first punch. Hiding the incident was not an option in the first place, as the first thing the police had done upon learning that they were minors was contact Godou's grandfather. The Kusanagi heir did not think his grandfather would throw Jace out for their actions, but the little voice of anxiety in the back of his brain said you never knew.

Jace said not to worry about it. The reassurance from the Campione helped calm Godou's nerves. Still Godou did feel sorry for the trouble he caused the taciturn man.

"Jace-san, thanks for helping that woman. I know you don't like getting in other people's business, but that was the right thing to do." Godou emphatically stated.

Jace grunted, not quite sure he agreed with that statement. "Yeah." But he didn't feel a need to burst the Kusanagi's heir's bubble.

The duo didn't say much more during their final walk back to Godou's home. The sun was setting creating a brilliant sky. Foot traffic again was light, allowing them to walk in peace. They were rounding a bend to the road on which Godou's home laid, when they caught sight of man leaning against a rail guard. As soon as the man saw them approach, he immediately stiffened up. After a few seconds in which he seemed to be gathering his courage, the man pulled out his phone and quickly texted a message. Once he was done, he put the phone away and began walking, reluctantly almost, toward Godou and Jace.

Upon closer inspection, Jace's sharper eyes noticed that the man was had Italian features. As did the other men who began to emerge from the surroundings. Two men rose up from the other side of the road who were also leaning against a rail guard. Three more came from the back alleys that ran adjacent to the Kusanagi bookstore.

As they closed in, Godou became nervous. Not for himself or for Jace. But for his grandfather and sister. These men had clearly been waiting for them to arrive. That meant they wanted something from them. Godou suspected it had something to do with Jace being a Campione.

"Jace-san what should we do?" Godou's anxiety was clear in his voice. He was worried these men were like the cultists that had abducted him. What if they had kidnapped his family first?

Jace on the other hand kept his head cool. "Just stay calm Godou. I'll deal with this. Trust me." Unbeknownst to Godou or Jace the passive charisma effect of the [Youth] activated. The divine ability caused Godou to relax, sudden courage flowing through his veins. Godou was still worried, but as long as they worked together, they could handle whatever was about to happen.

Which was why when the men lined up in front of the duo and suddenly bowed, Godou nearly face planted.

"Re Armell!" The men shouted in unison.

"Nani?" Godou numbly called out, too quietly for anyone other than Jace to hear.

Jace swiftly looked from side to side, checking the road for any pedestrians. He found none, so no need to worry about an audience. Turning his full attention back to the Italians in front of them. If they were calling him a King, then they were definitely mages.

"I wasn't expecting to see Italian mages in Japan. Why are you here?" Jace placed his hands in his pockets, but kept his muscles primed to charge. Jace was fairly sure they were not here for a fight, but better safe than sorry.

The first man they had come across, seemed to be the spokesperson for the group, as he spoke up as the rest remained silent. This was the oldest man, if his graying hair was any indication.

"Re Armell, forgive us for intruding upon your day. We have done so only at the request of Re Salvatore." The lead mage spoke humbly.

Jace knew that name, that was the Italian Campione that Erica had mentioned. "The King of Swords, huh."

The lead mage blinked in surprise, but quickly dashed the feeling. He did not have time to space out in front of a Campione. "Indeed. I see his Maestá is aware of his fellow Re. Yes, Re Salvatore has tasked us with delivering a message."

"A message? Why would another Campione send a message to Jace-san?" Godou questioned, unsure of what another of the God-slaying Kings would want with Jace.

"Ah, Signor Kusanagi. Re Salvatore's message is regarding Great Knight Blandelli." The lead mage showed deference to Godou as well, though he spoke with less fear.

Godou and Jace blinked at the mention of Erica. "Blandelli/Blandelli-san?"

The lead man took the cue to explain. "Re Salvatore wanted us to impart the following message. Erica Blandelli is under imprisonment indefinitely. If Re Armell wishes to free his ally, he must duel Re Salvatore for her freedom. Until such occurs Great Knight Blandelli will be held under arrest until her natural death."

Godou was mortified. "Salvatore-sama imprisoned Blandelli-san?! But, why? Why does he want to fight Jace-san?" Godou's interactions with Erica had been somewhat strained during their brief journey together, but he had been impressed by the blond knight. She was willing to risk everything to save innocent people. So, her revocation of freedom upset him. Then of course the prospect of Jace engaging in a duel with a fellow Campione was another worrying factor.

Mistaking Godou's shock for recrimination, the lead mage hurriedly attempted to avert the nonexistent wrath he feared. "We are terribly sorry for the imprisonment of your ally, Signor Kusanagi, Re Armell. But we cannot resist Re Salvatore's will. He demands to fight you Re Armell, in order to quench his thirst for battle."

Jace nodded in understanding. "The way Erica talked about him I figured he enjoyed a good fight. Anyways. So, he's using Erica as bait to draw me to him. Clever." Jace smirked. It was reasonable to assume he might care about Erica, afterall no doubt the proud blond had flaunted her achievement in getting him to fight on her behalf.

The sharpness of Jace's smirk caused the mages to tremble, mistaking it for anger. "Forgive us Re Armell! We had no choice but to obey!" The lead mage hurriedly spoke, bowing lower.

Jace merely waved him off, not concerned with the display of submission. Instead, he addressed Godou. "Godou, you have Erica's number, right?"

"Hai. Why?" The Kusanagi heir inquired unsure of what Jace was thinking.

"Because I want to hear what blondie has to say about this. I seriously doubt she's okay with just rotting away." Jace explained.

Comprehension dawned in Godou's eyes. He dug into his pocket, drawing out his phone. He swiftly dialed Erica's number. The phone dialed away, reaching the last ring. Just before it could go to voice mail, it picked up.

Godou rapidly spoke into the phone, letting out all of his concern. "Blandelli-san we heard about what happened. Are you all, right? Did they hurt you?"

Godou paused as the person on the other end of the phone call spoke. It caused his face to pinch into a frown. "I understand. I'll put him on."

Godou hand the phone out to Jace. Jace raised an eyebrow but took the phone.

"Go for Jace." The Campione spoke into the phone.

Erica's voice emanated into Jace's ear. "Lord Jace. Judging from Mr. Kusanagi's questions, I assume Lord Saltavore's thugs found you?"

"Yeah, they did. Blondie, what happened? They said the King of Swords had you imprisoned." Jace stoically spoke into the phone.

A sigh emanated from the phone. "My name is Erica." The blond knight grumbled. "Unfortunately, they told the truth. Lord Salvatore wishes to duel you. He is a battle maniac and your defeat of so many gods in a short time frame piqued his curiosity. But since you left Italy before he could reach you, he decided he needed to bring you to him. I assume you realize he's using me as bait to lure you in." Erica's tone was laced with annoyance. Clearly displeased with her situation.

"I figured. Alright. What are you going to do?" Jace inquired.

"What do you mean?" Erica replied.

"I mean what's the plan. I know you have one." Jace spoke as if he expected her to lay out a detailed strategy to free herself.

What he heard instead suffice to say shocked him.

"I have no plan." Erica bluntly stated.

"I think the reception dropped, because I heard you say you have no plan." Jace told Erica so she could set the record straight.

"You heard correctly. I have no plan to free myself." Erica reiterated.

Now Jace was confused, very confused. The tired tone of the blond knight was severely out of place for her normal character. "What the bloody hell does that mean?" The Campione couldn't believe his ears, so he needed to understand what was going on here.

An annoyed click sounded from the other end of the phone. "It means there is nothing I can do to alter my situation. Do you want to ask any more obvious questions."

Rather than get angry over Erica's jab, Jace kept pushing. "Alright walk me through this. I get you're 'imprisoned'. What does that entail? And don't deflect."

"You're so stubborn." Erica murmured, before raising her voice to normal levels. "I'm not sitting in a hole if that's what you're asking. I've been afforded house arrest. I'm forbidden to leave for essentially forever."

"Mhh. Okay. So, the reason why you of all people aren't just breaking out is?" Jace inquired, curious as to why someone as bellicose and willful as Erica Blandelli wasn't already walking out on her own power.

"Because if I leave there is no telling what Lord Salvatore will do. He's unpredictable, and dangerous. If I leave, he may exact vengeance not on me but on my fellow members of the Copper-Black-Cross." Erica stated with heavy intent.

Jace understood. Erica was a proud, stubborn woman, but she was also extremely careful with the lives of others. If her fellow knights would suffer because of her, she would refrain from angering the King of Swords.

"I see." Jace said simply.

A weary sigh emanated from the other end of the phone. It was so out of place for the vibrant character who it came from. "You understand now. I cannot defy Lord Salvatore. Not if it places others at risk."

Jace processed everything they had discussed so far. He found one thing still didn't make sense.

"Why haven't you asked yet?" Jace needed to know why.

A pause. "Why what Lord Jace?" Erica's tone was innocent. Far too innocent.

"You know what I mean." Jace wasn't going to be led around by the nose. He was going to get an answer.

Erica clicked her tongue. "Nothing gets past you does it, Lord Jace." The blond knight made it clear she was stating not asking.

Jace snorted in disdain. "I wasn't born yesterday, Erica. Now answer. Why haven't you asked me to fight Salvatore for you? That's all that needs to happen, right? I do that and you're free."

"I could not ask that of you." The solemn tone Erica used caused Jace to frown. "Lord Jace asking you to fight the King of Swords is a level of selfishness I cannot indulge."

Jace wondered what the bloody hell the blond knight was going on about. That seemed paradoxical to her behavior during their shared time in Sardinia. "Funny, that wasn't an issue before asking me to fight Verethragna and Melqart. What's different?"

"Do not insult me." Erica's tone became livelier with indignation. "I was not asking you to fight on my behalf. I asked you to engage with the Heretic Gods on behalf of the helpless people of the Mediterranean. This time I would be asking you to risk your life against a senior Campione for my sake. That doesn't even include the possible collateral damage of two Campione battling against each other. I refuse to place so many in danger for my own convenience!" Erica nearly shouted the last few words. After a moment Erica seemed to deflate, her voice losing energy. "No. I will not ask you to fight on my behalf."

Jace said nothing for a moment. He honestly didn't know what to say. Erica, the selfish blond that she was, was being indescribably selfless. The cherry on top she was actually concerned about him. Jace did not know how to process that.

"Besides would you actually come to my aid? The debt you owe me is paid. You said so yourself." Jace could hear the bitter smile on the other side of the call.

What would Jace do? He found he couldn't answer right away. Erica was right. The debt between them had been paid when he defeated Melqart. There was no more obligation to aid the blond knight.

Yet.

Something about doing nothing just did not sit right in the Seventh Campione's mind. Jace himself did not understand why he felt that way. He looked at Godou and pictured what the Kusanagi heir would do in this position.

Jace frowned for a second then asked Godou "Godou, what would you do if you were me?"

Godou blinked, frowned, then gained a fierce expression. "If I had the strength to do something, then I'd kick Salvatore-sama's ass. What he's doing to Blandelli-san is unfair."

Jace smiled a ghost of a smile. "I see." The Campione nodded in acceptance.

Readdressing Erica, Jace spoke what he hoped was a reassuring tone. Erica I'll be there tomorrow. Just sit tight."

A gasp sounded on the other end of the call. "Lord Jace, I said I don't want your aid!"

"Consider it a Campione's prerogative. I'll be there tomorrow. Jace out." Jace carelessly said.

"Wait-" Click. Jace ended the call.

When Jace looked toward Godou and the mages he saw extremely differing sights.

Godou was proudly smiling. He gave Jace a thumbs up.

The mages on the other hand were pale as ghosts. "Re Armell, do you really intend to fight Re Salvatore?" The lead mage squeaked out.

Jace, to his own surprise, spoke with a great deal of certainty. "I do. I'm not leaving Erica to rot."

The mages paled even more as Jace confirmed their fears. "I-I see. We will inform Re Salvatore."

The mages bowed and began to leave, but Jace held up a hand to stop them.

"Wait. I need something first." Jace spoke commandingly, causing the mages to freeze.

"What can we do for you Re Armell?" The lead mage inquired.

"You never told me where to find Salvatore. I'll need you to show me where to find him." Jace explained.

"Ah, of course. He awaits in Florence Italy. Simply head to our HQ and our Paladin will arrange the duel." The lead mage promised.

Jace smiled a little. It was that sharp tooth smile that showed entirely too much teeth. "Oh, no. I would much prefer it if you would show me the way. In fact, we'll take the flight over there together." Jace did not think that the mages were trying to pull a fast one over him. But better safe than sorry. Besides he did not feel like wasting his own money on airfare.
