INT. CAMP TENT - NIGHT
Ahsoka rolls over in her sleeping bag. She groans then rolls back the other way. She sighs and sits up. It's dark in the tent. She can hear her master sleeping at the opposite end of the tent.
Ahsoka sighs as she stands up, thinking about the battle to come. The 501st had just arrived in this spot a few hours ago after a long, sweaty hike through the jungle forest. The 501st had to make camp for the night before the big battle the next day. Supposedly the clunkers are on their way to a nearby location and their goal is to intercept them.
Ahsoka tip toes past her master and slips out of the tent.
EXT. CAMP - CONTINUOUS
Ahsoka looks around at all the tents and lazily wanders over to the tent perched on the highest ground in the camp. She sees Rex keeping watch, leaning against the sturdy tent. He looks fully prepared for battle, except his helmet is lying next to him.
She walks up to Rex and sits down next to him.
REX
Couldn't sleep?
AHSOKA
No.
They sit there in a peaceful silence.
AHSOKA
See anything interesting?
REX
Not really.
Rex picks up the macrobinoculars and hands them to Ahsoka.
REX
I did see a small, furry creature in that tree over there. I wonder if it's still there?
Ahsoka smiles and takes the macrobinoculars.
AHSOKA
I don't see anything.
Rex looks at her and chuckles to himself. He puts his hand on hers and turns her view a little to the left.
REX
Right there.
AHSOKA
Oh wow! I can see its head. So cute.
Ahsoka stares into the macrobinoculars for a little while.
REX
Why couldn't you sleep? If you don't mind my asking.
Ahsoka sighs and puts down the macrobinoculars.
AHSOKA
I guess I was just too restless. I kept tossing and turning.
REX
That happens to all of us sometimes.
AHSOKA
I think the fresh air helps.
Rex looks at Ahsoka and smiles. She smiles back.
AHSOKA
The company helps, too.
Rex's smile widens.
REX
It makes keeping watch a lot less boring.
Ahsoka leans comfortably against the tent wall behind her. She tilts her head up to look at the stars.
AHSOKA
I wonder how many of those stars are planets?
Rex leans back against the tent next to her and looks up.
REX
I'm not sure. A lot I bet.
AHSOKA
Rex, how many planets have you been to?
Rex tilts his head slightly closer to Ahsoka's, sill looking up at the stars.
REX
Hmm, I haven't really kept count. You've probably been to more than I have.
AHSOKA
That makes sense.
REX
Are there any planets you want to go to?
AHSOKA
I've never been to Scarif. I've heard it's nice there.
REX
I've never been there either.
AHSOKA
You would love it. The entire planet is filled with tropical beaches.
Rex looks at Ahsoka, who is staring up into space.
REX
Sounds like a nice retiring spot.
AHSOKA
It would be a nice place to go to after the war is over.
Ahsoka feels his gaze and looks him in the eyes.
REX
What do you think you'll do once the war is over?
Ahsoka sits up straight and puts her hands in her lap, looking down.
AHSOKA
Well, it depends on when the war ends. I'll probably be a Jedi Knight by then. Maybe I'll get to have a padawan of my own one day.
Rex leans forward and wraps his arms around his knees.
REX
You'll be a great teacher one day.
AHSOKA
(smiles)
Thank you, Rex.
Ahsoka looks up at him, waiting. Rex just hugs his knees and looks out into the forest below.
AHSOKA
What do you want to do once the war is over?
Rex takes a deep breath, unwrapping his arms from around his knees and sits criss-crossed. He stares down at the dirt.
REX
(mumbles)
I'd like a family.
Ahsoka leans in closer, confused. Did she hear him right?
AHSOKA
What?
Rex lowers his head further so that Ahsoka is staring at the top of his head.
REX
A family. I'd like a family.
Rex looks up as he feels a hand on his cheek. He stares nervously into Ahsoka's bright, blue eyes.
AHSOKA
That's sweet. I never pictured you wanting a family.
Ahsoka lets her hand fall from his face.
REX
I... hadn't thought of it until I met Cut on Saleucami.
AHSOKA
I remember you telling me about him.
REX
His kids were so cute.
Rex stares off into the distance, thinking. Ahsoka continues to gaze at Rex's face.
AHSOKA
Rex?
Rex turns to meet Ahsoka's gaze.
REX
Hmm?
Ahsoka looks down at the dirt.
AHSOKA
(small voice)
Never mind.
Rex puts a hand on Ahsoka's shoulder.
REX
What is it?
Ahsoka looks up at Rex and shifts in place.
AHSOKA
No, I shouldn't...
REX
I won't tell anyone... if that helps.
Ahsoka shifts closer to Rex, right beside him actually. She leans her head on his shoulder. Rex takes one of her hands.
AHSOKA
(whispers)
I've thought about wanting a family, too. I know it's against the Code, but sometimes those thoughts just come.
Rex leans his head against Ahsoka's.
REX
I know what you mean. Sometimes I think about leaving the GAR, like Cut did. But I would never actually do that.
Ahsoka plays with Rex's fingers in her hand.
AHSOKA
Sometimes I wish we weren't in a war... But then I would've never met you.
Rex slips his hand out from hers and surrounds Ahsoka in a hug. She holds him back, closing her eyes and feeling the warmth from his body around her.
REX
I'm glad I met you, too.
Rex closes his eyes and holds Ahsoka tighter.
