Hairi had a very particular way she liked to go to bed. Having slept alone her whole life, she got used to the same routine and the same incredibly familiar space. It was hard for her to relax without her bed worn into exactly her shape, her blankets that smelled like her, and her plush rabbit that she held as she slept. Add in her phone playing a soft sleep mix and she's asleep in no time. It's specific. She knew that.
So, when Nanami decided to spend the night at her apartment, Hairi was embarrassed to let him stay.
"I have to warn you... it's hard to sleep with me." Hairi muttered, allowing Nanami into her room and holding her arm. The room was cluttered. Her desk full of half written notes and sheet music, headphones of various colors and complexity hanging on the top of her computer monitor. Pictures and paintings hung on every free space on the walls. A bookshelf overflowed with notebooks and music theory. Nanami was sure he saw a few sets of manga and a peculiarly titled novel hidden behind a few knickknacks.
It looked well lived in. Full of everything Hairi loved.
"Not a worry." Nanami said, turning back to her and offering her a hand. Hairi frowned, rubbing her arm again and averting her gaze.
"Honestly, it'll be annoying. I don't want to bother you with it."
"It won't be a bother," Nanami wrapped his fingers in hers and urged her closer to him, resting his other hand on her hip, "I assure you. But I can sleep on the couch if you're uncomfortable." That would be the easier solution to this. Just giving him some blankets and letting him rest in the other room. But Hairi didn't pull away and her grip on his hand tightened. She didn't want him to be away from her. She loved his presence and she knew this step had to be taken sooner or later. Might as well rip off the bandage now.
Hairi slowly unraveled from his embrace and stepped out to her bathroom to dress in her pajamas, a loose tank top and shorts. Nanami did the same, prepared as always, returning shortly after in only plain colored sweatpants. Her eyes lingered on his bare torso for a moment before turning to her bed and pulling the covers back. Hidden beneath them was a stuffed rabbit. A flash of confusion crossed Nanami's face at the unfamiliar doll. Hairi caught a glimpse of the expression as it passed and glanced aside, her face heating up with embarrassment.
"I can't sleep without it... sorry."
She sat on the bed and pulled the rabbit into her arms. It was fuzzy, yellow, with big eyes filled with colorful flecks. She plugged her phone into her charging cord and tapped at it before she laid it on the bedside drawer. From it, soft piano music. Just barely loud enough to be heard over the whirring of the fan nearby. Hairi hugged her plush rabbit to her chest and rested her face on its head. She hoped it would hide some of her embarrassment. She knew she looked incredibly childish. Sitting with her plush, hiding shyly behind it, sitting in a pile of thick comforters and assorted pillows while a lullaby plays in the background. She expected him to change his mind or think less of her for her routine.
Nanami simply removed his glasses, placing them beside her phone, turned off the light, and slid into the bed beside her.
"Stop saying sorry." He hummed, his tone soft. He placed a hand on her shoulder, gently. Urging her to lay down so she could get comfortable. Hairi was slow to move, curling around her doll. Nanami rested beside her, laying an arm over her. He pulled her closer to him, squeezing her plush between them both. Hairi giggled under her breath and nuzzled his chest. He touch was gentle, trailing over her arm and down her stomach. His eyes searched hers, fingers brushing her cheek and tucking her hair behind her ear.
"It's your home. I wouldn't force you to be uncomfortable just to stay with you."
"You'll be okay...?"
"Of course."
Hairi smiled, reaching up to take his cheek and pulling him down to peck his lips. The meeting of their lips filled them both with warmth. But it was late and both of them were far too tired to take it further. They slipped into the dark of sleep soon after. Nanami cradled her, one arm under her head and the other wrapped around her. Hairi cuddled her rabbit, her forehead against his chest. She found it easy to sleep beside him. His presence was comforting.
