Chapter 3
Billy spied Charlie coming in the door. "Charlie, it's good to see you. What brings you around?" He asked as he started to wheel himself toward them.
"Did you know my daughter was dating a vampire?" Charlie uttered suddenly.
This made Billy to falter causing him to swerve and collide with the wall. He cursed and rubbed his knee that hit the wall the hardest.
"I'll take that as a yes." Charlie said angrily. "When did you plan on telling me?"
Billy was about to tell him he didn't know what he was talking about, but then his son came in the door with a passed out Bella in his arms.
Billy paled and blurted, "What did he do to her?" in a panic.
"Calm down dad, she is just drugged up from the dentist."
Just then a loud snore came from Bella. Then a mumble. "My Jake, smell good." She nuzzled her nose closer to his neck. Then letting out another snore, this one not as loud.
The two older men turned their attention to the teens and both raised their eyebrows. It usually took a lot to make Jacob blush but right now he was turning redder than a ripe tomato.
Clearing his throat Jake said. "I'm going to put her to bed."
He brought her into his room and tucked her into his bed. She grabbed his arm then hugged it to her cradling her face in his hand. He sat on the bed not yet willing to leave her side. He really did miss her. If only she didn't choose his enemy over him.
He reached his free hand down to brush the hair out of her face. She let out a small laugh. Whatever she was dreaming about was making her happy.
"What do you see in that head of yours honey?" Jacob wondered out loud.
He wasn't expecting a response but he got one anyway. "My Jacob," Bella murmured. "I love you."
He smiled sadly at her. Her words made him happy and broke his heart all at once. He leant forward and kissed the side of her head. "If only you would admit that when you're conscious." He whispered.
A loud bang came from the kitchen. Bella didn't stir. He figured whatever the dentist gave her would have her out for a while. He gripped the pillow and pulled it down into Bella's embrace hoping it would be a good enough replacement for his arm. He had to get to the kitchen before the two men killed each other.
Billy was sitting at one end of the kitchen table and Charlie was standing at the other leaning forward with the palms of his hands on the table. It must have been him slamming his hands down that made the sound.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Charlie seethed.
"Our laws prevent us from telling non-tribe members" Billy sounded regretful.
"And your laws are more important than my daughter's life?"
"It's more complicated than that, Charlie. There's a treaty, if we tell anyone about them it could start a war that we can't win." Billy insisted.
"Okay, so what's preventing you from telling me that your son is a werewolf?" Charlie shot back.
Billy paled again then set his jaw. "Would you have believed me if I did?"
Charlie sat in the chair and rubbed his hands over his face. "Probably not."
"But you believe Bella."
"I didn't want to." Charlie admitted.
"Do you at least have cages made of silver for the nights we have a full moon?" Charlie asked in all seriousness.
Billy tilted his head and opened and closed his mouth a couple of times before figuring out how to respond. "That's not exactly how things work."
"What do you mean?" Charlie looked up at his friend.
"Well, silver has no effect on them and they are not mindless creatures. They have full control of their minds just as they do when walking around in human form."
"So I should cancel my order of silver bullets then?" Charlie deadpanned.
"Regular bullets would probably be more efficient, but please don't shoot the wolves. They exist to protect human life, not harm them.
"I need to get in touch with Rosalie Cullen." Charlie announced.
