Chapter 4
"We might be able to help with that." Billy said.
A few phone calls later and Billy had set up a meeting, somewhere in the middle of the woods.
"How am I supposed to know I am where I'm supposed to be? It's not like I have a GPS in my back pocket and my cell phone might as well be an expensive paperweight out there." Charlie complained.
"Jake will go with you. Trust me he will find them." Billy assured.
"Why are we walking again?" Charlie asked Jacob for the third time.
"Because we can't drive cars in the middle of the woods." Jake answered with a sigh.
"Why are we meeting in the middle of the woods?"
"Privacy."
"My office wouldn't be private enough?" Charlie grumbled.
"That depends on how the meeting goes."
"How much farther." Charlie could hike and hunt with the best of them but with the anxiety running through him he just wanted to be there and done with things already.
"About a mile. If you don't want to walk I could carry you." Jacob joked.
"Boy, if you pick me up I will shoot you."
Jake chuckled.
About a mile in, Jake stopped suddenly. Charlie looked around. He didn't see anything special in this part of the forest that he didn't see anywhere else.
"Just the female blonde can meet us here." Jake said.
Charlie looked around again. Who was this boy talking to? There was no one there. This had to be a joke. Just then a deep growl came from the woods, it sounded close. Charlie swung around looking for the source but found nothing.
"Fine." Jake said through clenched teeth. "Just her mate."
Charlie grabbed a thick stick off the ground. It wasn't exactly a stake but he thought the broken end looked sharp enough. Jacob raised his eyebrows at the older man.
"What?" Charlie asked. Lifting the stick he announced. "Just in case."
Jacob opened his mouth to say something. Before any words came out a cold wind hit them. Two pale figures seemed to appear out of nowhere. Charlie's head spun from the suddenness of it. He started to tilt over but Jacob grabbed his arm and waited until he was sturdy on his feet before letting go.
"Rosalie Cullen, I presume." Charlie said.
"You, presume wrong. I am Rosalie Hale, and this is Emmett McCarty," She announced. "But we are from the Cullen coven, and my mate goes by their last name."
"Coven? Like witches?" Charlie's eyes opened wide. He turned to Jake. "Are they real too?"
"At this point it wouldn't surprise me to see a unicorn fly through the trees" Jacob deadpanned.
"I believe you mean a pegasus." Emmett announced.
"Alicorn." His wife corrected.
"Did you say mate?" Charlie asked her.
"Is, husband better?" She asked.
His mouth moved but Charlie seemed to forget how to form words. That is until the big guy, Emmett pointed out the stick in his hand. "What's that for? Are you playing fetch with your doggy friend here." He asked with a smirk.
Jacob made a crude gesture in the vampire's direction.
"I'm just prepared to defend myself." Charlie announced bravely.
The vampires tried but couldn't stop the amused smiles that appeared on their faces.
"You're just as entertaining as Bella." Emmett told him.
"The only thing that will do is give you splinters." Rosalie added.
Charlie looked to Jake. After a small nod of the boy's head he dropped the stick back to the ground. He didn't want to be unarmed so he readied his gun just in case.
It was a surprisingly bright day out; the sun streaming through the trees reminded Charlie of this. "If the two of you are vampires, how can you be out in the sun?"
"The sun doesn't affect us like you think." Rosalie answered.
"Then how does it affect you?"
"Rosie," Emmett said with a wide smile. "Allow me."
Loving to show off his strength, Emmett walked over to a large tree and pulled it right out of the ground. He then proceeded to break it into large pieces. Before Charlie could even try to comprehend what was happening there was a log laying on the ground behind him and one behind the couple across from them.
"Was that necessary?" Jacob grumbled.
"What? It looked like the human could use a seat." Emmett told him. "Besides, now we can do this."
He put his hand out to his wife and together they stepped into the beam of light.
Charlie stared at them for a moment then said. "Great, they look like disco balls. Is that all the sun does to you?"
"Yes." Rosalie answered.
Charlie wasn't sure what happened next but suddenly Emmett was staring menacingly over his head into the woods and hissing. It scared him so much that Charlie shot at him. Jake's hand shot out in front of Charlie. Shouting and cursing Jacob pulled his hand back into his body.
"Cut it out. Both of you." He managed to get out between swear words.
Looking at Emmett examining his damaged shirt and unmarred skin. Charlie realized the bullet ricocheted and came back at him. Jacob's hand was hit. Crap what was the boy thinking? He could have lost his hand.
Charlie grabbed onto Jake's hand trying to see the damage.
"I'll be fine Charlie, don't worry." Jake told him. The boy started pulling shards of metal out of his hand. Shrapnel from the bullet Charlie realized. When the wounds closed before Charlie's eyes he took a step back. Shock and aww coursed through him.
Charlie took advantage of the prone log and sat down. Jacob sat next to him.
Looking at Rosalie he asked. "Can you tell me why my daughter wants to become like you?"
An inhuman growl came out of the boy beside him. Charlie's head whipped around and he quickly moved to the other side of the log.
"Sorry." Jacob bashfully mumbled an apology.
