Chapter 7
"Where do I start?" Rosalie asked herself. "For me, not growing old is a negative. Although I covet my youth and beauty, I would give it up without thought if I could have a family. Children of my own, to love and raise. When I was human I wanted it all, someone to love me, the white picket fence, and all the babies I could have. Unfortunately, I wanted it so bad I was blind to the evils of my fiance. If I had chosen better." She shook her head. "Moving on." She cleared her throat. "The constant pain caused by the thirst. It's like you swallowed lava and the only thing that can make the pain go away is consuming human blood."
"Does it?" Jacob spat. "Does ending a human life take away your pain."
Setting her shoulders Rosalie announced. "I don't know. I have never had a drop of human blood."
"What about you?" Jake gestured to Emmett.
"It dulls it for a little bit. But it never goes away."
A snarl came out of Jacob's chest but he didn't move. Charlie wasn't sure if he was getting used to the animalistic outburst, or he just strongly agreed with the sentiment, but he wasn't about to chastise the boy for that one.
"It's not like we are born to this life with an iron will," Emmett snarled back. "Besides, it was before the treaty."
"Oh, before the treaty." Jacob shot back, "So those lives didn't matter?"
"I didn't say that." The throaty growl behind the words made the boys' voices sound monstrous. "I lost control. I couldn't help it."
Before Jacob could say anything in return Charlie interrupted. "And it has been a long time since anyone has lost control. Right?" He said wanting to calm the situation.
Emmett stiffened and glanced over at his wife. "It has been a very long time since anyone in our coven has bitten a human." She declared.
"There, see." Charlie said thinking the matter was finished.
Jacob had other ideas. "When? When did someone lose control?"
Charlie looked at him surprised. He too saw the hesitation between the two vampires and noticed how carefully the girl chose her words. But he wasn't going to point it out thinking it best that tempers calmed. "Jake, maybe we should let this go for now."
"When?" Jake demanded again.
When no one answered he spouted a theory he had. "Around the time Bella went missing in the woods, right?" he scowled at the two vampires. "That's why you all left, that was the one thing she refused to talk about."
Charlie looked between the three of them and cursed. If Jacob was right and these people, no these creatures cared about Bella it made sense why they all left her. "Jake, I need you to back off and try not to react." After a few deep breaths Jake gave Charlie a nod. Looking at the vampires Charlie instructed. "Tell me what happened. Don't leave anything out."
After recounting the events of that fateful day there was a thoughtful silence over the group.
Finally Charlie broke it, "She was just starting to get better, she was starting to live again. Why did Alice come back? Why did all of you come back?"
"Alice lost sight of Bella, we thought she was dead. I made the mistake of telling Edward. I thought, without her he would come back to the family. I should have guessed his melodramatic ass would do something stupid, and then there's Victoria."
Charlie put his head in his hands. "I would ask what and who that was but I'm afraid I can't take anymore of this right now. I need some time, and then I will call another meeting.
"That's a good idea." Rosalie commented. "I am sure your guard dogs are getting tired too."
Charlie looked up at her in question and then shook his head. Nope, no way, no more.
"Well then your escort awaits." Jake told the two vampires, without a goodbye the vampires were gone in another cold breeze.
Trying to process everything he learned so far, Charlie started the walk back to the Black's house.
When they were a couple of minutes away from the house Charlie asked. "Vampires are not allowed on the rez, right?"
"No, they're not."
"When's the next full moon."
"In two weeks. Why?"
"Just trying to figure out what I should do." Charlie sighed tiredly.
"What does that have to do with the full moon?" Jake asked in confusion.
"Wait, I was assuming since the vampires can't enter the rez without permission that the-" Charlie cleared his throat. "You guys. Couldn't leave the rez without theirs. You know when you're, umm, all, furry."
Jake coughed out a laugh. Then confirmed. "We can't."
Charlie nodded his head, and then froze. "Crap, the vampires will still be vampires on the full moon."
"Again what does the full moon have to do with anything?"
"You know, full moon," Gesturing to Jake, Charlie timidly said. "Werewolf."
Jake stopped walking. "Charlie, I know you said you can't take any more tonight, but I wouldn't feel right not telling you."
Charlie turned back to the boy. "What?"
"We don't need a full moon to shift."
Taking a few quick steps back Charlie asked. "So you are going to turn into that thing tonight?"
"Probably," Charlie took a few more steps back. "Charlie, don't worry, we won't hurt you. As long as you're not too close when we phase then you are in no danger here."
"When do you- phase?"
"We phase whenever we want, the only time we can't control it is when we lose our temper."
"But, you lost your temper more than once in that meeting."
Jacob clenched his jaw. "I have exceptional control over my wolf."
"What about all those hikers, the supposed bear attacks?"
"Leeches, We were too late to save them."
"Leeches?"
"Bloodsuckers. Vampires."
"The Cullen's?"
"No, others."
Charlie swallowed thickly, "There are more? In forks?"
"Some pass through. Do you really want to hear all this, you said no more tonight. Did you change your mind?"
"No, no." Charlie turned to keep walking, then turned back. "You said I am in no danger from your wolf."
Jake nodded.
"Can I see it? See you, umm, turn into your furry self?"
Jacob lifted his eyebrows giving Charlie a baffled look, before asking. "Are you sure?"
Charlie nodded.
"Alright umm, stand here." Jake walked a few feet from the tree line, his house now in sight. Charlie stood where he was told, Jake went back to the tree line and started stripping off his shorts. Charlie lifted his hand in a stop motion.
"What are you doing?"
The boy shrugged. "I don't want to run out of clothes."
Throwing his jean shorts to the side, Jake took one more step back, then exploded into his massive wolf causing Charlie to fall back on the ground. Jacob slowly stepped forward trying not to frighten Charlie any further.
Looking up in amazement Charlie said. "Bells was right, you are bigger than a horse."
A/N I know that a lot of the readers are team Jacob and a lot of the readers are team Edward. This story is not meant to be a romance, it is just Charlie being introduced to the supernatural world and how Bella reacts to this. I hope all my readers can still enjoy this story no matter what team they are on. At the end of my story I hope your imaginations take you all to your very own happy place, thank you for reading.
