Chapter 10

Bella slowly walked away from her father. It was obvious they had things to work out, as for the way he felt about the Cullen's, she was sure once he got to know them better he would see what good people they were.

Taking the phone from Billy she greeted the caller. "Hello."

"Bella," Alice breathed in relief. "Bella, you need to come home."

"Yeah, I'm working on that."

"No Bella, you need to come home now. Edward is frantic with worry."

"I'm fine Alice." Bella felt a niggle of annoyance. The argument of her being safe around her best friend was a recurring theme. "Put him on the phone, I will talk to him."

"No, you don't understand. Edward isn't here. He is threatening to break the treaty."

"What, No, he can't! Alice, you have to stop him!"

"We're trying. Carlisle, Jasper and Esme are at the treaty line attempting to talk him down, but"

The phone was snatched out of Bella's hand before she could hear the rest of what Alice was telling her.

"Who is this?" Charlie demanded.

"Charlie, it's Alice."

"What did you say to my daughter that made her so upset?"

"She needs to come home. We are worried about her."

"Why?"

"I can't see her. So we don't know if she is safe."

"She is perfectly safe with me."

"If something happens while she is on their land we can't protect her."

"That's not your job, it's mine, and she is well protected here."

He slammed the phone onto its cradle, almost knocking it off the wall.

Bella started in on him as soon as he turned to her. "Dad, please we have to go home. We need to leave right now."

"What did she tell you?"

She knew she couldn't say Edward was going to break the treaty. That would only cause a fight between the Cullen's and the wolves. She was trying to think of a feasible reason they had to go home immediately when she heard Jake's voice.

"Bells is afraid that her precious lea-" he cut himself off. He ground his teeth together and took a few deep breaths, "She's afraid there will be a fight if she doesn't go home."

"Is that true?" Charlie asked Bella.

She closed her eyes tight and pressed her lips together. She forgot about Jake's super hearing. He probably heard every word, tears leaked from her eyes as she realized this wasn't going to win any points for Edward.

Giving up on trying to convince her father to take her home, she stated. "I'm eighteen, you can't keep me here."

Instead of raging and throwing a fit like she thought he would, Charlie let out a defeated breath. "Please, Bells, I just need a little time to process all of this. For just this once, choose me over someone else."

She had ignored his pleas and broke his heart before. This time his life wasn't in danger, but Edward...

"I need to call Alice."

Charlie nodded his head and left the room.

Dialing the phone Bella hoped the compromise she was about to make would work for everyone.

"Hello," Alice answered.

"Hi, Alice." She took a deep breath. "Do you think you can all convince Edward to give me one night? I promise I will be home tomorrow."

Alice was quiet for a minute. "We will do what we have to do." She finally said.

Jacob had patrol. Bella was going to take his bed for the night, while Charlie took the couch. She might have slept a good part of the day but she was exhausted. Charlie thanked her, gave her a hug and told her he loved her. After a tense awkward silence, both too tired and stressed to discuss any of their issues, Bella made her excuses and went to bed.

Although she was more tired than she could remember, Bella did not fall asleep for a long time. She just laid there berating herself for What she did. Now that Charlie knew everything, fighting for her relationship with Edward was going to be even harder. Maybe it would be worth it in the end. Now she could tell Charlie the truth, and maybe she could even see him again… after.

With that thought she fell into a fitful sleep.

Bella stirred awake; not for the first time that night, she had just rolled over and went back to sleep the first few times, but this time felt different. The skin on the back of her neck tingled, the short hairs standing on end, she had the distinctive feeling someone was watching her. Edward? Did he break the treaty? Bella sat straight up, the fear waking her fully.
