Chapter 16
Carlisle took a deep breath prompting Charlie to do the same. "Chief Swan, I assure you my children have a better grasp on their control than you were led to believe. It is my opinion that the incident at Bella's birthday party happened because Jasper had let his guard down. He is used to being able to relax in our home."
"Then maybe you should not invite humans to your home!" Charlie shot back. "And as for sending them to school for appearances, have you ever heard of home school?"
"I am afraid that wouldn't work. I also send them there to be among humans so they can keep their own humanity. The worst and most dangerous of my kind shut themselves away and see humans as no more than cattle!"
This was the first time Bella had ever heard Carlisle raise his voice. She stared at him in shock.
Carlisle cleared his throat and placed his hand over his chest. "I apologize for my outburst."
"No, Please," Charlie said. "Continue your outburst. I would love to
hear about the majority of your kind's "nature"."
"There are some humans out there whos "nature" isn't that grand either." Edward said gently. Pointing at his temple he continued. "I would know."
Charlie scowled at Edward. "There are ways to stop those humans. From what I've learned in the past twenty hours, there is no way to stop your kind."
"Yeah, there is," Jake spoke up. "You just need the right tools."
"And what tools are those?" Charlie asked.
"These leeā¦" Jake cleared his throat before continuing. "Vamps are supposably on our side. They can destroy their own kind. And then there is the pack."
Charlie thought about this for a moment. "Do you think we could trust them to turn against their own kind for us?"
"It wouldn't be the first time." Emmett supplied. "And I'm always up for a good fight." He smirked, throwing his fist into his other hand.
Charlie frowned, it was obvious He was still uneasy with the idea of trusting the vampires.
Clearing his throat, Jacob offered "If you don't want to trust them, you always have the wolf pack. We will fight."
Edward spoke up. "It's not like the wolf pack doesn't come with its own risks."
"What do you mean? What risks?" Charlie barked out.
"The wolves aren't dangerous." Bella protested.
Edward looked down at her scowling. "You mean to tell me the wolves have never put you in danger.''
Bella opened her mouth to deny that fact, but the memory of Paul exploding into his wolf and running after her popped into her head. Looking away from Edward she knew she couldn't deny it.
"And you've met Emily Young." Edward said to drive his point home.
"What does Emily Young have to do with any of this?" Charlie asked.
"Do you really think it was a bear that attacked her?" Edward asked.
The realization of what he was being told had Charlie rushing over to his daughter. He gripped her by the shoulders and looked over her carefully.
"What is he talking about?! Who hurt you?! What did they do?!"
"Dad, stop. Noone hurt me." Bella protested. Seeing that her father wasn't going to give up that easily she explained what happened that day. "But Jake protected me. See no harm done."
"Paul who?" Charlie asked shortly.
"Lahote." Jacob supplied.
Seeming to file this away Charlie moved on to the next subject he had on his mind.
"Now, other than you all craving her blood, and the wolves having tempertantrems that can and have ended in humans being in danger, what is the next immediate threat to my daughters life? Jacob said something about an enraged psychopathic redhead. What are we doing about that?"
"We almost had her the other day," Emmet started sulkingly. "But these assholes went after me instead of her, because I "stepped over the line."" He said in a whiney voice.
"Charlie looked in between Jacob and Emmett. "Please tell me your kidding."
"We had to stop him and Paul from attacking each other." Jacob complained. "I had to follow orders."
"Of course, Paul. Who is it that gives out the orders?" Charlie asked.
"Sam's the alpha."
"Sam Uley? Emily Young's boyfriend? Please tell me he is not the one that attacked her."
Noone had to answer. The expression on Jacobs face said it all.
"Well I was going to ask where his priorities are, but now I just want to know who the hell made him alpha?"
"He was the first to phase." Jacob answered glumly.
"Are you not going to tell them everything?" Edward asked Jacob.
"What does he mean?" Charlie and Bella asked.
Charlie looked over at Bella with his eyebrows raised. Then they both looked to Jacob for the answer.
Swallowing thickly Jake admitted. "I'm supposed to be Alpha."
"But you're just a kid." Charlie said before thinking. "Is that why Sam still holds the title?"
"No," reluctantly he said, "He still holds it because I don't want it."
Charlie rubbed his hands over his face "I don't blame you for not wanting that responsibility but something has to change." Looking at Carlisle he asked, "You're the one incharge of this group right?"
The doctor nodded his affirmation.
"Would you be willing to work with the wolves to get rid of this threat?"
"Of course, Bellas safety is our first concern."
Charlie nodded, "Jacob, do you think you can call a meeting with the wolves for me. Tell them to meet at your house."
"Sure, sure. When?"
"Now."
"On it." Jacob ran out the door and into the forest.
Turning to face Carlisle, Charlie said. "After I work things out with the wolves, you and I have to talk about some new rules involving our "children"." looking at bella he said, "Come on Bells, we are headed back to the Rez."
"No! No, I want to stay here." She looked up at Edward, wrapping her arms firmly around him.
"I thought you wanted to be involved in saving your own life. If you would rather stay here and stare at your boyfriend all day by all means." Charlie said as he walked out the door.
Bellas fingers dug into Edward. She wanted to stay by his side but Charlie was right she wanted to have a part in protecting herself.
Smiling down at her, Edward said, "go."
"What?" She asked, baffled.
"I have to trust your judgment. You feel Jacob can protect you. I have to accept that I am not the only one you rely on. If he fails he will feel my wrath." he said in a joking voice, but Bella could see the seriousness behind his eyes.
Bella kissed him with as much fierceness as he would allow. "Don't do any thing stupid this time."
"I'll try not to." He teased her.
Bella ran out to find Charlie waiting for her in his car.
She got into the passenger seat. "Say nothing,'' she ordered him.
His lips turned up in a smile, but he did as she commanded and said nothing.
Pulling up to the Blacks housethey could see Billy waiting for them on the porch and a group of shirtless boys lining the forest.
Halfway between the car and the porch Charlie turned to face the boys. "Which one of you is Paul?"
A large scowling boy took a step forward. "I am."
"Paul Lahote?"
"Yeah, why?"
"Just wanted to make sure you were the right one."
Charlie took out his gun and shot Paul right in the kneecap. The wolf boy fell to the ground screaming, his shape blurred but he didn't phase due to the pain he was in.
"When he gets back up, make sure he knows that if he ever tries to attack my daughter again, I will aim a little higher and a couple of inches over." Charlie told the others around him.
"Dad, you can't just go around shooting people." Bella yelled, as they continued their walk to the house.
"He's a wolf." Charlie reasoned.
"He is still a person." Bella protested.
When they got to the porch he looked at his friend's disapproving scowl.
"What? He will heal." Charlie said dismissively.
