Chapter 19

"You believe she is building her own army." Charlie repeated. "Why do you believe that, why would she be doing that, and what the hell does that even mean?!"

The Cullens looked uncomfortable while the wolves yelled and cursed in the background.

"Army?" Jake asked. "You mean like an army of vampires?"

"Yes." Jasper answered.

"Fucking fantastic." Jacob rubbed his hands over his face and into his hair gripping and yanking at the strands.

"Answer me!" Charlie yelled.

Carlisle held up his hands, in a calming motion. "Because of the sudden rise in missing people and gang violence in Seattle, we believe vampire activity is behind it. Since Victoria has reason to stay close to us…"

Charlie raised his hand to stop Carlisle. "The army doc. Why would she be creating it?"

Carlisle nodded his head. "We believe she is creating the army to use against us, and/or the wolves, so that she can get to Bella."

"When the fuck were you going to tell us?" Jacob cursed.

"Your Alpha hasn't exactly been affable." Edward said.

"You could have told Bella, and she would have found a way to let me know." Jake complained.

"You weren't speaking to Bella, and I didn't want to worry her unnecessarily."

A whimper distracted them. "Bells?" Charlie asked.

"This is all my fault. If it weren't for me none of you would be in danger. All those people…"

"This isn't all on you kid." Charlie tried. "You can't take responsibility for other people's actions."

"If I hadn't come here none of this would have happened." Bella said.

"You had every right to come here. This would probably be happening to someone else if you didn't." Charlie told her.

"Doubtful." Paul grumbled.

"Excuse me!" Charlie turned to face Paul.

"No, dad he's right. This couldn't have happened to anyone else. Even if someone was put into similar situations they would have made different decisions."

Paul scoffed, "At least the bitch admits it."

More than one person took a threatening step forward.

Charlie pulled his gun out.

"I didn't attack her you fucking prick." Paul spat.

Charlie didn't aim the gun. He just held it in his hand and examined it. "Verbal attacks are still attacks."

"Fuck you you peace of shit. I…"

Charlie spoke over him. "This must have hurt real bad. When I go home I think I'm going to trade it in for my rifle. With as much damage and pain this little gun made, can you imagine what a rifle will do?" He looked up to a now quiet Paul. "That knee healed pretty well, but I wonder, will all your body parts heal just as flawlessly?" Shooting a quick glance to Paul's crotch he continued. "Will they heal all messed up? Like a piece of chewed gum. Hmm, I wonder if they will even grow back at all. I'll tell you what, you be nothing but respectful to my daughter and I from now on, and we will never have to find out. Deal?"

Paul balled his fist and gritted his teeth. "Yes, sir."

"Dad, he has every right to be mad. If I…"

"Bella! Stop putting everything on yourself. This is not your fault."

"He's right. It's not your fault." Edward agreed. "It's mine, if I hadn't come back. If I had left you alone…"

"Then I would be dead." Bella blurted. "And if by some miracle I didn't get fatally injured by Tyler's truck, I would have died in Port Angeles."

"What the hell are you talking about?" Charlie demanded.

Bella cringed. "Dad, you remember when Tyler's truck slipped on the ice and almost hit me. Well, Edward literally stopped it from crushing me… with his hand."

Swallowing thickly, Charlie nodded and said. "Thanks for that."

"Of course." Edward answered.

"And what's this about Port Angeles?"

Bella flinched. "Well remember how I went to Port Angeles With Jessica and Angela."

"Yes." Charlie said impatiently.

"Okay, so since I wasn't planning to go to the dance, I sort of got bored with the dress shopping."

"And?" Charlie drew out the word.

"And I decided to go look for a bookstore."

"Bella, get to the point where you would have died!"

Swallowing, Bella said in one breath, "Well, I got a little lost on the way to where I was supposed to meet back up with my friends."

Charlie folded his arms in front of his chest. "That doesn't sound life threatening."

"I may have run into some trouble makers."

"Bella!"

"Dad really it wasn't that serious."

"''I would have been dead if you didn't come back.'' sounds pretty damn serious to me! What exactly did these ''troublemakers'' do that made you feel like your life was in danger?"

Bella looked off to the side, refusing to look at her father.

Looking at Edward he said, "You were there. What happened, how did you stop it, and why were you there in the first place?"

After accounting the events of the day and explaining that he was looking for Bella to make sure she was safe, Edward was sure Bella was going to lock her window tonight. She was scowling at him so hard Edward could swear he could feel scorch marks on his skin.

"Did you follow her around often?"

Edward nodded his head.

"So essentially you were stalking my daughter, and I have to be okay with that because if you weren't she would be dead." Charlie paced a short distance rubbing his face and pulling at his hair. Stopping suddenly he looked up to the sky and screamed, "For fucks sake!"

"Dad!"

"Bella, in the past 24 hours I have found out that I have been living in ignorance about the world around me. I can't trust anyone, because who hasn't lied to, or kept major secrets from me. My daughter is bestfriends with a werewolf. She is dating a vampire, who stalked her by the way." he let out a humorless snort. "I arrest stalkers, and with this, I can't even be mad about it, because him stalking you, somehow saved your life from miscreants of the human variety. That is only a small part of what I learned and there is still more to find out. With all this, I think I am entitled to an existential crisis."

Jake cleared his throat. "Yeah, while you're going through that, how about we find out more about this potential army of leeches. Can't the pixi do her voodoo thing and find out everything we need to know?"

"That's not how it works." Alice whined with obvious frustration that she couldn't do just that. "She is being very careful not to make any decisions. Ergo I can't see anything she is doing."

Jacob let out an annoyed breath.

Edward's head popped up, looking at Jacob he said. "That's brilliant."
