Chapter 27
Gently probing and prodding at Leah's legs, Doctor Cullen suggested, "Perhaps We can relocate her to a bed. This way it will be easier to examine and manipulate the bones back into their correct form."
Wanting to help Bella ran out of the room yelling, "On it."
Leah's voice rang out, "By all means, doc, let's make it easier for you to break my legs."
Upstairs, Bella readied her bed by pulling back her blankets, and folding them to the bottom. She fluffed her pillows then looked around unsure what else to do. Rushing to tell the others the bed was ready she stumbled out her door. Jake was already in the hall with Leah in his arms. As he stepped onto the first step, Sue came bursting through the front door.
"Leah," She yelled breathlessly.
"I'm going to be fine, mom." Leah choked out. "Go check on Seth."
A groan came from the living room, "I'm fine. Don't make her worry about me too."
When they reached Bella's room, Leah tightened her hold on Jake's neck. "Don't you dare put me down on that bed. I can smell the leach stench from here."
"Leah, there are lea… vamps all around us." Jake told her.
"Exactly, it's already surrounding us. I don't need to be laying in it, too."
"Leah…" Jake sighed.
"You can put her in my bed." Charlie announced from behind them. "Later we can burn this one."
"Dad!"
"Bella." He deadpanned.
Soon after placing her in the bed, Charlie's room became overcrowded. Sam, Sue, Charlie, and Seth Squeezed in on one side of the bed, while Edward, Bella, Jacob, and Dr. Cullen took up the other side.
Charlie cleared his throat. "I'll go make some coffee." He walked around Sue. Trying to get around Sam, Charlie lost his balance. Flailing his arms, he hit Sam in the chest and screamed out in pain. Sam palmed the top of Charlie's head to sturdy him. Charlie shook out his throbbing hand and walked out of the room complaining, "No wonder they look like they have so many muscles, they're made of boulders."
"I'm gonna go help." Seth said, hugging his mom. He shoved his way past his unmoving alpha.
Looking at her daughter, Sue chewed her lip. "She needs an x-ray and probably an MRI."
"Right now, we're just fixing her legs." Carlisle assured her. "We will worry about her back later."
"Sam," Sue said gently. "You, and the others should probably go downstairs."
"No. I'm her alpha. I'm staying… She might need to be… alpha ordered for… something."
Less gently Leah said, "Sam, Get out."
"But."
"Jake can stay." Sniffling, she quietly said, "I'm already in enough pain. Please, just go."
Sam lowered his head and nodded. "I'll go patrol outside."
Sue stood tall with her head held high. The determined set of her jaw said she was ready for anything. Bella thought the woman was the pitcher of strength.
"Bella, love." Edward grabbed her attention. "You should go downstairs as well."
"What about you?"
"I am needed here."
"I could help."
"No, there is nothing you can do." Those words sent Bella into that familiar feeling of being useless.
"Right, I'll just… get out of the way then."
"Bell's weight." Jake reached her by the door. "There is something you can do. Leah's going to need to eat. It will help her heal. If you are willing to cook something it will help a lot."
"Sure, sure." She forced a smile. Bella didn't know if he was telling the truth or if he was just trying to make her feel useful but she was grateful to have something to do.
Bella immediately started pulling pots and pans out; she then scoured the fridge for anything she could make. It wasn't long before the kitchen table was filled with options.
She started a pot of water for spaghetti and put a pan on low, filling them with frozen meatballs and sauce. She then filled a bowl with the ingredients to make instant brownies.
Charlie had just filled his cup with coffee when the first screams were heard. He jumped, splashing the hot liquid all over himself. His knuckles turned white around the handle before he placed the cup down on the counter. Using a dish towel, he cleaned himself up the best he could, then reached in the fridge and grabbed a beer. Walking out of the kitchen he said over his shoulder, "Maybe you should make those into edibles." Bella's mouth fell open as she blinked at her fathers back.
The sound of another scream pulled Bella out of her dumbfounded state.
By the third scream Seth was running out the back door. By the sixth there was a knock on the front door. Bella, now covered in flour and mixing a large bowl of pancake batter, looked at the door, eyes wide and mouth hung open.
Charlie calmly walked to the door slowly opening it. "Bob." He greeted the man holding a rifle as if it was a sunny afternoon where nothing out of the ordinary was happening, meanwhile the cries and screams rang through the house along with a curse or… ten.
"Hey chief, I'm sorry to bother you." the man's eyes flicked up to the chaos above them. "But, the Mrs. is worrying and we just wanted to know if there is anything we could do?"
"Fuck you you fucking son of a bitch!" Leah screamed.
"Um, We were figuring those dogs got a hold of someone?" Bob's forehead wrinkled.
Bella dropped the whisk into the bowl and quickly stumbled her way to the door. "No! No, that's just…"
"If you touch me again," Leah growled. "I am going to fucking kill you!"
"Laber," Bella squeaked. "Yes! Because labor is painful, right, yeah. Labor." she nodded her head hopping from foot to foot.
Bob just blinked at her.
Carlisle came down the stairs and smiled at the man. "Mr. Marks, How are you?"
"Doctor Cullen?"
"Yes." Carlisle smiled.
"What is going on here?" Bob asked bewildered.
"Apparently, there is a woman upstairs in labor." The doctor's lips twitched as he glanced at Bella. "No worries. She is almost there. just another half hour or so."
"Alright then." Turning to Charlie Bob said. "It's been some night chief. I'd say one for those tv dramas."
"You have no idea." Charlie answered.
Turning to leave Bob said, "You have a good nigh…'' shaking his head. "Night."
"Yeah, you too. Sorry about…."
"If you come near me I will rip your balls off and set them on fire before shoving them down your throat!"
"That." Charlie finished.
"We have one more leg to do." Carlisle said. "I'm not sure if having Edward assist me is helping." a growl and a loud thump from upstairs. "Or hurting."
Edward came downstairs holding his arm. "Hurting. Maybe it's best if I stay down here for a while."
"Yes." Carlisle agreed, "I'll call if I need you." going up the stairs he murmured, "I'm going to do this as quickly as possible."
Bella looked at Edward then, back to the kitchen.
"I'll sit while you cook," he suggested. "unless you want my help?"
"No!" she rushed back to the bowl possessively holding it she said, "Cooking is my thing."
Edward smiled. "Of course love."
The screams started again and Charlie grabbed another beer. Instead of going back into the living room he sat at the table scowling at Edward.
The screams turned into a growl and Bella worried for a moment that Leah had phased, then she heard. "Bring back the mind reader doc, I need someone to break."
There was one more scream before Carlisle came back down.
Charlie looked up at him and announced. "Hey doc, you didn't have to come down. I would have happily sent him up."
Carlisle's lips twitched. "That won't be necessary. We are done for now."
"Are you sure? Maybe we should send him up anyway."
"Dad, stop."
Carlisle smiled good naturedly, then frowned. "We will have to be going soon. The sun will be rising shortly."
Jake came down the stairs just as the last pancake was sizzling in the pan. "Hey, something smells interesting."
"What does that mean?" Bella snapped, pulling the brownies out of the oven.
"Um…" Jake said, looking at the pot of spaghetti and meatballs next to the plate of pancakes on the table. His attention was pulled to the pan of brownies Bella was still holding.
"I think," Charlie said. "Jake is saying you made an interesting combination of food."
"Well I didn't know what to make." Bella cried out.
"This is great," Jake rushed to say. "Leah has options."
"Well," Bella sniffled, "You should all eat."
Edward stood from his chair.
"We will." Jake stepped forward, taking the brownies and setting them on the table.
Bella sniffled again, swiping the sleeve under her nose. Jake and Edward went to hug her at the same time. There was a smashing, cracking sound as their heads collided above Bella's.
"Fuck!" Jake grabbed his forehead as blood trickled down his face.
"I'm sorry." Bella swallowed against her nausea.
"Why the hell are you sorry?" Jake's gentle tone didn't match his words. "It was his hard ass head that did it."
Edward handed him a paper towel. "Sorry." he smirked.
"Sure, sure." Jake wiped away the blood leaving behind no evidence of any trauma. "How about we start Leah off with some spaghetti." He grabbed a bowl filling it to the brim. "This looks good. I'll have some when I come back down,"
As soon as Jake left the room Bella filled another bowl. "That's a lot of food love. Are you hungry?"
Bella shook her head. "It's for Jake."
Edward frowned. "He could serve himself."
Before anything more could be said Jake was back. He accepted the bowl from Bella kissing her cheek. "Thank you honey. Leah says thank you too."
Bella folded her arms and stared at Jake for a long moment. "No she didn't."
Jake shook his head laughing. "No, but she meant to." He looked over at Edward with a smirk, before sitting and eating.
Bella looked back at her boyfriend to see him scowling at her best friend. He pulled her back against his chest. "Yes," he whispered. "I am."
"What?" Bella asked. Edward shook his head.
Jake said, "He's just wishing he ate human food, instead of human blood."
"Jake!" Bella protested. "You know he doesn't!"
"Right." Jake conceded. "Mammal blood. Better?"
Bella grimaced, nodding her head. Just the thought of blood had her holding her breath.
"Leah said she wants some pancakes next." Jake announced in between bites. "And a fuck lode of brownies."
"Language!" Charlie chastised. They all looked quizzically at the man. "What? I've hit my limit. We've taught you more manners than that, boy. Clean up your words."
Jake mumbled into his bowl. "Leah said it first."
Bella announced, "I'll make her a plate."
Jake dismissively waved his fork. "Don't worry about it. She can wait." He pointed at Edward. "You should tell her… Now."
"What?" Bella asked Edward.
He didn't look happy. "Alice will be coming back to Seattle with us. Sam will be staying here with Seth. We want to get the lay of the land so-to-speak before deciding on a strategy."
"And what if those things come after us while you're strategizing." Charlie asked.
"They won't know we are there. Right now it's just reconnaissance. We are leaving Esme and Rose behind until we know more."
