Little SoKai one-shot I came up with and was eager to write out. Hope you enjoy it. :)
Disclaimer: I don't own Kingdom Hearts.
"Sora?"
Sora's gaze perked up upon hearing the sweet voice which had spoken to him from nearby. He turned his attention away from the sun setting over the horizon ahead of him to face the person who was sitting at his side.
The faraway look on the boy's face vanished to take in the girl who was sitting closeby.
Kairi was at Sora's side. She had brought him to the shore so they could watch the sunset together. She stood out in the evening atmosphere which filled the small islands.
Sora's heart raced at the sight of the Princess of Heart. In all his travelling across the different worlds, he had never met as pure or as beautiful or as kind-hearted as her. He was so grateful to have her in his life.
"Yes, Kairi?"
"Are you feeling alright?"
"Of course I am!" Sora grinned. "Why wouldn't I be when I'm right here with you?"
Kairi glanced down, her cheeks filling with a faint shade of pink, before peering up to face the spiky-haired boy again.
"It's just... You don't seem to look like you're enjoying watching the sunset..." She tilted her head. "Is this boring for you?"
"What?" Sora waved his hands and shook his head. "I'm not bored! Nothing I do with you could ever bore me!"
"You sure?" Kairi asked. "You can tell me if you're not enjoying yourself, Sora..."
"It's not that! I swear! It's not that I'm not enjoying spending time with you! It's just..."
Sora trailed off. He turned away from the red-haired girl to stare out towards the sun. It was slowly sinking from the bright orange sky to disappear beyond the ocean.
"It's just what?" Kairi whispered.
"Just that... We've been watching the sunset together for a long time." Sora looked. "As far back as I can remember, we'd watch it evening after evening from this very beach. It's always been the same for all those years. Nothing ever seems to change no matter how often we do it..."
"I see..." Kairi murmured thoughtfully. "You've got a point, Sora... It's how things always stay the same on this island why we wanted to go explore other worlds..."
"Exactly! And we've done just that! We've gone to new places, met new faces and even discovered new sides to ourselves!" Sora lifted his gaze to peer to where the sun was descending beyond the sea again. "Yet after all that, here we are now, doing the same thing we've always done every evening on this island!"
"Yes we are... The very same thing..."
Kairi turned to look out towards the sun herself. She could see it was vanishing beyond the horizon in the exact same spot as it always did. The waves were lapping endlessly onto the shore as they had done for as long as the island existed. Things were still the same on this world as they had been before Sora, Kairi and Riku had left it to go on their adventures. It was no wonder they had wanted to explore other worlds when nothing ever changed for them on this one.
Kairi decided it was time to make a difference here for them.
Gently, the redhead took the brunette's hand into her own.
Sora blinked in surprise. He turned towards the Princess of Heart, who was looking up at him with a soft smile.
"So let's change things up, shall we?" Kairi suggested eagerly.
"Change things up?" Sora raised an eyebrow, confused. "How do we do that, Kairi?"
Kairi said nothing. Her smile widened as she answered the boy's question - by throwing her arms around him and pressing her lips against his own.
Sora's blue eyes went wide over what the girl was doing to him. This was something he had never done with her at all. All the times they had watched the sunset from the shore together, the pair of them hadn't shared a moment like this before.
It took Sora no time at all to realise he liked it.
He proceeded to show Kairi by wrapping his own arms around her as he pressed his smiling lips tenderly back against hers.
As the sun set over the islands, the pair on the shore relished their moment in it with one another. They remained locked in a passionate kiss which was made from all their love for each other. Their lips sealed together from the feelings they'd share for so long, but had both been too shy to reveal.
Until this evening, that is...
It was a good long moment before the young lovers pulled away. They gazed at each other with sparkling eyes, their hearts racing over what they had both done. The faint pink within Kairi's cheeks had deepened into a rich red - and a matching shade was upon Sora's.
"Well..." Kairi smiled sweetly. "That was different! Wasn't it, Sora?"
"It was!" Sora agreed, grinning broadly. "And I love it!"
Kairi giggled.
"And you know what else?" Sora closed his arms more around Kairi, securing her inside his embrace. "I love you, Kairi!"
Kairi's blue eyes sparkled as she gazed adoringly at her hero. She rested her head against his shoulder, closing her eyes in contented happiness.
"I love you too, Sora..."
Sora smiled, running his fingers tenderly through Kairi's hair. It meant so much to him to hear that the girl he'd cared about for so long felt the same way about him.
With the islands still painted in an enchanted evening atmosphere, the pair continued to affectionately cuddle each other. Then they fixed their loving gazes onto one another before proceeding to share another kiss in the sunset...
...which was witnessed by someone who had just arrived on the island. He was standing at the back of the beach, watching in astonishment what the pair were up to on the shore.
"Well..." Riku exclaimed, bewildered over stumbling upon what his two lifelong best friends were doing together. "There's something you don't see around here every day!"
