Just a Little Bite
Shoto had known his fate was sealed the moment he found out that he was an omega and not the true 'alpha' child prodigy that his power-hungry father craved. Sure, the world he lived in now was progressive enough that omegas were allowed in the workplace and were even sidekicks to heroes instead of people that were meant to pop out whiny brats and sate an alpha's desires. But the goal for him had always remained the same. That he wanted to be a hero that could save people like All-Might did and make the weak feel strong again. However, when you are the product of a Quirk Marriage and the child of the now Number #1 hero by default, Endeavor, there wasn't much to look forward to and tonight apparently was no exception.
The bi-colored haired budding hero was struggling to regulate his temperature among the atmospheric music and light scraping of cutlery against fine dishes as he stared placidly at Inasa. His father's only saving grace was that the person Endeavor had arranged for him was a familiar face that he had made amends with. Their relationship had expanded into a tentative friendship of sorts, were they exchanged positive greetings instead of hostile ones. The overly friendly, polite, and boisterous loud alpha teen was no longer politely aggressive towards Shoto because of unintentional past slights and seemed genuinely happy to meet up with the omega at the arranged dinner with eyewatering pricey food.
Inasa came off as clueless, but he was a genius level tactician that knew that this dinner was arranged in contemplation of marriage. The fact that the Shiketsu High Schooler was here willingly, meant that he looked favorably enough on this potential relationship to even speak with the still hated Endeavor. However, that didn't mean the same for the coerced Shoto. The seventeen-year-old wanted to be anywhere, but here, not liking the idea of being sold off like chattels in a favorable marriage before he was one year from graduating U.A. High School. A forced smile had been pasted across his face as fragile as a soap bubble, only to rupture when Inasa tried to reach for his hand enthusiastically during one of his impassioned speeches and said hand caught on fire.
"I'm sorr—" He began genuinely apologetic, eyes widening in surprise at his visceral response to the Alpha touching him. He immediately waved his other hand to send a cold breeze to extinguish the fire and soothe the burn, his dual scent of fresh strawberries with clotted cream and pine trees on a snowy day took an acrid, burnt, and spoiled smell in his distress, only intensifying at his father's abrupt interruption.
His smile pained as he tried not to convey that his father gripped his arm a little too tightly as he yanked him out of the chair. His heart thundered in his ears as Endeavor murmured some lame excuse and apology to his unruly son's behavior before marching him to the restaurant's balcony so he wouldn't stink of the place with his signs of distress.
"Stop being so damn childish Shoto. I thought you would be pleased that I choose someone that you have become friends with. He seems like an honorable alpha and doesn't mind having a partner in the hero field too," Endeavor admonished, glowering at his youngest spawn. The older man fished out a spare, perfectly wrapped scent patch so that his son could put it on his scent glands to dampen the displeasure radiating from his wayward son in waves.
Endeavor had never looked out for anyone else but himself. Shoto could smell the bullshit coming off him more intensely than his own scent as he violently wrenched his arm from his father's grip before he ripped off the packaging of the scent patch and slapped it on his own neck. His dual-colored eyes glared reproachfully at his father, no longer cowled, by unintentionally undoing his friendship with Inasa by responding violently to his father inside the fine establishment. "I am not your broodmare and you will not curse this family with another unwilling mother to produce children she clearly didn't want. I have scars to prove that type of coercion meets in failure," he snarled out, each breath a steamy hiss. His stubbornness and temperament were unfortunately inherited and as fiery as his father as he glared at him and dare him to rationalize being blindsided, but what was supposed to be a family dinner to talk about classes and his future plans. He didn't realize that marriage talks were the topic of the night when he had been blindsided and his
"Shoto I'm doing this for your own good. We have a legacy to uphold, and I properly screened the boy," Endeavor calmly stated. The older man tried to appeal to his hostile son's since of sensibility. He spied his second eldest, Fuyumi trying to let out calming pheromones as the scent of chilled cherries and cranberries permeated the air as she quietly stepped out on the balcony. It was a good idea he brought his daughter along to chaperone the meeting. She was the cooler head out of the three, a natural peace maker, and the first of his brood to forgive his past bad parenting.
Endeavor was still staunchly a traditionalist and did not appreciate his son forging documents to get himself placed in a hero school in the first place instead of quietly getting married off to someone so that the next generation could have a better chance of defeating his long-time rival. It was only the bad publicity of having his son pulled out after performing so stellar in school and widened his pool of candidate suitors to display his quirk and potential for a quirk marriage. But the father had mellowed out somewhat since becoming number one and riding out the scorn of finding out his first born was alive and had turned his life to villainy. He was willing to give his headstrong son, some semblance of freedom by allowing him to choose a partner that he was familiar with. It was disheartening that his son refused to see that he had indeed change significantly and had even had his family come for emotional support while Shoto went on the arranged dinner meeting.
"Yours. You are doing this for your own good," Shoto hissed. He could see his meddlesome, but well-meaning sister in the background. His nose crinkling in displeasure at the sensory memory of the smell of cherries and cranberries right after their father's explosively violent reactions. The fact that she couldn't even bothered to give him a head's up in this matter was also proof that his family couldn't be trusted. The absence of Natsuo unsurprising because his way of defiance was the beta's indifference of his family and hatred towards their father.
"Shoto, please calm down. We are in public," Fuyumi said gently, ready to gather his younger brother into a reassuring hug. It was only a flare up Shoto's flames, as his left side caught on fire, before dying down, that caused her to bite her lip and stay in place.
"Society may have forgiven you for the things you have done to our family, but I will not and cannot forgive. Tonight is proof that you're still the same asshole that broke your family down so badly that one went into villainy and another into a mental facility," Shoto snap back, daring his father to deny it. He took some sick pleasure in seeing his father's fake façade of calm, quickly dissolving as his fiery hair, flared up in his anger.
"Once you have an alpha that can properly control you, you will be much happier and that smart mouth of yours will finally shut up and learn to respect your elders," growled out Endeavor, beyond pissed at his upstart son.
"Yes, just like mom," Shoto snorted knowing Endeavor dared not strike his son in public. He then rolled hi eyes and calmly walked pass Fuyumi, who had hovered nervously behind them. He didn't care if he left his older sister with a big mess to clean up. Her compliancy from childhood, proved that she was more than willing to deal with Endeavor's bullshit. He thought of bright green eyes and an even brighter smile in order to properly calm himself down before his scent of displeasure leaked through his fresh scent patch.
"Shoto, you're back. I was getting worried," Inasa said cheerfully. He eagerly stood up as the omega returned to the table, gentlemanly offering to seat Shoto once more, but the dual-haired teen waved him off dismissively.
"I'm sorry Inasa, I'm not feeling well. Something clearly disagreed with me tonight. I'm going back to campus, but it was nice to see you," Shoto said woodenly. He hurt to see the smile slipping off Inasa's face. He wasn't a bad guy and would more than likely make some omega or beta a good husband. He just wasn't right for Shoto and he was sorry the buzz-cut teen had to be dragged into his father's games.
"Should I walk you back?!" Inasa eagerly suggested, concern clearly written on his face. He was already reaching in his wallet, ready to dismiss the meal that had grown cold, politely waiting for Shoto's return.
"No, no, you enjoy the meal. Ask the waitstaff to reheat it. It's my dad treat after all and I'm really sorry things couldn't work out. I'll text you when I'm safely at the dorm," he reassured quickly before Inasa could protest. His smile small, but genuine as he patiently waited for Inasa to sit down, a little bit disappointed before he said his goodbyes and left from tonight's disaster.
The moment he exited the restaurant he used his ice quirk to skate as far away from the establishment as possible. It had to be close to 9pm, the night lit by a full moon and whatever stars could be seen through the light pollution. Shoto greedily sucked down gulp, after of gulp of cool, fresh air, his mouth steaming billowy white smoke with every exhale as he tried to shake off tonight's stressfulness. He had been in full fight or flight mode and was prepared for anything, since there were still some people that would turn a blind eye to his brash since of discipline. Case in point was the fact that they had a full argument outside and not a single waiter or waitress bothered to peek their head inside to deescalate the situation.
He huffed, letting out a bitter laugh into the cold, lonely night air. He was so upset, his breath frothed out in a constant billow of smoke between clenched teeth as his body temperature fluctuated between hot and cold. He just wanted to go home to his dorm room, maybe take a shower and curl up in his nest with some snacks. His stomach let out a little growl, reminding him that he had only managed a simple appetizer of soup and a small dinner roll before things escalated. He knew that Inasa didn't deserve to be abandoned like that, but he couldn't pretend he didn't want to be anywhere but there. All he could hope for now is that none of his friends and classmates would pick up on his mood and/or what he had been up to that night and drag out his misery at the Heights Alliance dormitory.
It wasn't long before he was gliding to the impressive building that housed his dormitory before curfew. Shoto carefully walked through the side door, wanting to avoid his classmates. He had calmed down somewhat, but he didn't want to interact with anyone as he quickly and quietly walked with a purposeful gait pass the stragglers lingering in the common room, curled up in a puppy pal for movie night. He knew his face and more than likely his leaking scent must be radiating the mood of someone who didn't want to talk to someone, despite clamping firm fingers down on his scent patch. The set of his jaw and the steeliness of his dual irises would have even quelled a persistent person like Denki to give pause.
"Todoroki-kun, what's wrong?" asked a soothing voice that was like an immediate balm to the pissed teen's soul.
Suddenly Shoto saw green. Warm, concerned, green eyes; seaweed green curly haired that look so soft that he itched to touch it; and a green fan-made t-shirt of his uniform given to the nerdy teen in appreciation for a rescue. He should push away his best friend and wallow in peace, but he couldn't deny he needed Midoriya like a child would a security blanket when stressed.
Shoto allowed Midoriya to enter the elevator with him, his body visibly relaxing as if his limbs have been taut and held up by some puppeteer before the strings were cut. He sagged back against the hard metal of the elevator door, his fingers spasming against his scent patch before he let it go and allowed his scent to freely leak pass the scent, knowing his friend wouldn't judge him. Shoto wanted to walk to Midoriya immediately and bury his face against the side of the greenette's neck, where his scent receptors were. Beta's had a scent, despite popular opinion. It just wasn't strong enough that they needed pesky scent blockers.
However, if Shoto drew close enough to him, then even he could breathe in the scent of earthiness of freshly turned soil and freshly brewed herbal tea leaves that made up the beta's scent profile. He truly believed right now that if he did, he wouldn't feel so much like his word was ending.
"Can I speak to you alone, Midoriya-kun?" Shoto finally said as the elevator finally dinged on his floor. It was a short ride, the omega dormitory on the second floor, closest to the ext. At night the second floor could not be accessed by elevator and the stairway guarded by nightly patrol to prevent any mischief making to the omega residents like Shoto and the few other omega heroes-in-training. He knew he had a little over thirty minutes to make his point before Midoriya was forced to ascend to the third floor for betas that served as a minuscule barrier between the alphas on the fourth floor.
"Sure Todorku-kun, what's wrong?" he asked, having been the one to press Shoto's floor for him. He walked out of the elevator, holding the mechanical door open so that Shoto could follow silently behind.
"I need you to bite me," Shoto told his slippered feet.
"I… Wha… HUH?!" Midoriya squeaked out in bemusement, freezing mid-step. He never expected his friend ask this of a beta person like him that was practically invisible to the alphas and omegas of the world when it came to love interest.
"Never mind I'll ask someone else. Maybe Bakugou is still up…" Shoto trailed off, devastated by the rejection, but desperate to find an out.
"No Shoto!" Izuku shouted out. Then a few decimals lower, cheeks flushed in embarrassment, "Is it really that bad that you would seek Kacchan's help, if I can't?!" It wasn't that Izuku couldn't see that Bakugou wasn't tons better than his middle-school self once he found out that there were bigger fish in the pond more capable then his flashy quirk. But Katsuki gave him the same traditionalist vibes as Endevaor and he didn't want one of his best friends to be tied down to life with a man that resembled his hated father in behavoir. Izuku had a strong feeling that Bakugou and Shoto's somewhat one-sided friendship would implode if sex and a relationship were introduced together in their already volatile bond.
"My bastard of a father is setting me up on meeting dates for arranged marriages. It's in in anticipation of getting quirk married and knocked up before my hero career can start," Shoto barely managed to choke out in the middle of the hallway. He didn't care if others heard his despair when his heart was breaking. Tears brimmed and itched his bi-colored eyes as he tried to hold back the helplessness that he felt. He knew that if he was going to be given away anyway, he rather be to someone who might cherish him.
Without a word Izuku drew one of his dearest friends into an embrace. His crooked fingers gently stroking the red and white hair, mixing the strands together as he strove to comfort him with pats and soft crooning sounds he saw alphas make to comfort distressed omegas. He drew his friend gently into an alcove so they could have some semblance of privacy until his friend's shivers and sobbing stopped.
He murmured soothing nonsense into the taller teen's ear, trying his best to let his stunted beta scent glands to blossom so that he would feel safe. The greenette was just as frustrated as his best friend because he had stupidly thought that Endeavor had truly grown from his disastrous experience with Dabi and had grown as an Alpha and a father. But clearly, he hadn't and it pissed off the warm-hearted greenette. He may be a beta, but he wasn't above delivering a Detroit Smash to a traditionalist bastard like Endeavor.
"I know you want me to claim you to keep you safe. But… um is it possible for me to court you?" Midoriya asked meekly after a bit of brainstorming. He had wished the problem was simple enough that he could have told the teacher's the issue and they could resolve it. But Endeavor was too high up on the totem pole not to bulldoze through regulations, especially when the public had all but forgiven him about raising a Dabi in his abusive parenting.
Shoto eyes widened in surprise. His eyes red and puffy from crying looked at Midoriya in surprised wonder. He had honestly never thought that anyone would suggest courting when he had only felt like a burden that Endeavor had just wanted to marry away. Hope blossomed in his heart and a sense of safety that made him nearly sag against the greenette, forcing the shorter teen to support his weight. "Midoriya…" he began before he was cut off.
"Look, I'm not backing out. I will gladly bite you at any time for your sake. But you're a great guy who deserves to be wooed properly, even by a beta like me. So, would you allow me to court you Shoto Todoroki?" Izuku said with determination, brushing away Shoto's sweaty bangs, and tilting his face upward so he would see him and recognize his sincerity.
"Yes," Shoto nodded eagerly, dumbfounded. "Besides, you're better than any knot headed Alpha," Shoto insisted stubbornly. He hated when his best friend sold himself short when the greenette embodied safety for the teen. He would gladly fight anyone that would insult and misjudge his friend, including his own self. If Shoto had really wanted an alpha he could have sought out Iida, especially since he had yet pursued Hei Hatsume. He had only suggested Bakugou's name to get a rise out of the gentle teen, knowing nothing motivated him to action as much as his childhood frenemy.
Shoto clung to Izuku, soaking in this moment. He shouldn't be so happy after feeling like his life was over, but he was. The taller teen knew that he had more than a little crush on his best friend, Izuku Midoriya, the moment the bright-eyed boy with the sunshine smile told him that 'his powers was his'. He was one of the first that acknowledged him as a worthy rival before the Sports Festival even started, and the greenette proved himself tenfold the way he dominated the stage and snagged Shoto's attention.
He never thought he would be the type to fall in love with anyone being a product of a loveless marriage. But the way the young teen was more determined to save Shoto's lost soul stuck in the mire of hatred for his father rather than prioritizing winning the tournament, and facing off with childhood bully made his heart skip a beat.
It was just unfortunate that Midoriya thought himself out of the running for his affection just because Shoto was an Omega and Izuku was only a beta. The greenette proved more than worthy and he hoped he could prove that they were meant to be as he courted him back.
"Thank you," he breathed out in his exhaustion. His body suddenly slumping over in sleep as the stress of the day put him out like a nightlight.
