Chapter 2: Maggie (June)
After hanging out at the park yesterday with her parents, Maggie knew that the rest of her family would arrive today. Her parents revealed that the recent change in her life made everyone in the family want to be there for her birthday.
Upon waking up, she heard her phone buzzed with birthday greetings from her family and the team. She was grateful that people remembered but she didn't want to make a big fuss about it. In fact, she really had nothing planned to celebrate except meeting her family and eating together.
She glanced at the still sleeping child beside her. She was optimistic with the changes she sees in Ella. The little girl started coming out of her shell and becoming more confident. Maggie was looking forward to her meeting the children in her family. Her niece and twin nephews are a bit younger than Ella but she hoped that they would get along.
Maggie slowly got up as to not wake Ella and went out to prepare breakfast. She brought her phone with her so she could reply to her messages. She had just finished making scrambled eggs, sausages and toast when the little girl woke up.
Ella ran from the bedroom door to hug her. "Happy birthday, Maggie!"
"Aww, thank you, Ella," she said, hugging her back.
As they sat down to eat, Ella asked her, "So what are you going to do today?"
"Well, you know we'd be meeting my parents and the rest of my family later." She smiled at the little girl. "You have to prepare yourself. I'm warning you, they can be a little too much."
Ella giggled. "Sounds like you just described yourself."
"I am not!" Maggie protested. "Compared to my brothers, I am definitely quiet." They both laughed.
After eating and putting away the dishes, Maggie decided to catch up on some chores. She was finishing up the laundry when she received a text from OA. Will pick you and Ella up in twenty minutes, birthday girl.
"Ella, I think it's time to get ready. We have to go soon."
Maggie took a quick shower and got dressed up. She wore a deep red blouse and dark jeans. Ella was already ready in the living room, wearing her floral dress and navy leggings.
Soon, OA was knocking on the door. They all climbed in and settled in his vehicle. Maggie figured that they would be going to the hotel where her parents were staying . Which was why she was confused when they passed by the hotel. "OA, where are we going?"
OA smiled at her. "Don't worry. Just trust me, okay?" Ella giggled in the backseat.
They pulled up in front of a beautiful house. "OA, what are we doing here?"
"This is owned by one of Amira's friends. She agreed on letting us use this today," he replied before going out of the vehicle. He went to the passenger side to open up the door for Maggie and Ella.
His partner snorted at his gesture. "You didn't have to do that."
"It's just for today, don't get used to it," he teased, which earned a light punch from the birthday girl.
They were welcomed by Maggie's parents. Hugs and greetings were given to their daughter and Ella.
Inside the house, the rest of her family and the team greeted her with banners, balloons, and party poppers. Maggie introduced Ella to her niece and nephews and to Elise's daughter Grace, which the analyst brought at OA's request. The kids were allowed to let them play around the house.
The grill was situated in the backyard. Her brother Nathan doing the cooking with her other brother Michael helping him. Nathan's wife was talking with Stuart and Nina, who also brought baby Doug. Jubal and Isobel were enjoying the food while Tiff was hanging out with the analysts.
Maggie turned to her parents. "Did you guys plan all this?"
"No, OA just told us when he dropped us off at the hotel last night. We would just be looking for a restaurant so we could all eat as a family," her dad answered. "But I guess, he and maybe the rest of your team did this."
Flanked in between her parents, the birthday celebrant took everything in. "During a celebration like this, I really wish Erin could be here too," her mom whispered.
Maggie nodded. "How is she?"
Her mom gave a hopeful smile. "She's determined to finish her rehab. We think she's making good progress." The celebrant gave a comforting hug to her parents. She hoped that her sister would really succeed this time.
Michael called out to them. "Mom, dad, sis! Come on, it's time to eat!"
Maggie and her parents joined the celebration and everyone had an awesome time.
