His words still echoed in the silence when he made a dash forward and towards the stunned man. Quiet whispers in his head weren't deafing him anymore, his own thoughts were louder, clearer. He knew what he had to do.
His fist met with Otto's masked face. The mask cracked and a moment later shattered into million pieces. The man collapsed on the ground unconscious. The move that freed Otto from mind control was based on a choice rather than an instinct.
With a quiet exhale altered hero turned his head. His eyes spotted the drone with a skull like pupil. Low growl of anger escaped his throat. It didn't feel right, it felt strange, yet was familiar. The power, the drive and feeling of freedom, he knew it all so well.
That day, that spider bite, he remembered it, he recalled every little thing he was feeling at that moment. Yes. It was similar. But… He took a step towards the drone. The feeling of raw rage was alien, was wrong. It messed with his head really badly and he was still trying to clear it, was trying to wake up.
The web caught the drone and with one move altered hero smashed it, breaking, just like he broke the mask before it. The eye of a drone was locked on his face. Quiet hiss escaped its speakers, it was a hiss of anger of disappointment.
He expected Spiderman to embrace his new identity, to claim to be Goblin. The drone hit the wall and collapsed on the floor. He didn't expect him to claim the opposite. Despite the damage, the drone was still functioning, still watching the scene silently. He didn't expect him to be so clenched to the phrase.
Lowering his hand, transformed hero stood tall. His eyes were narrowed as he stared at the pieces of the mask on the ground. Quiet inhale made him turn his head like a predator that spotted its prey. His yellow eyes met with blue.
Silence once again fell between the two as they stood in the empty room. None of them moved, none of them said a word, as they stared at each other. His hands clenched in fists when the mix of anger and confusion rose in his soul, suddenly, quickly.
"Pete…?" Quiet voice made his ear twitch. It felt weird. His eyes narrowed even more, as he stared at the boy before him. Blurred memories that flashed before his eyes appeared in his head once again, much louder and clearer.
Harry Osborn. His teammate and a best friend, he was there for Peter Parker, always there for him. He always stood by his side, first at Midtown High, then as superheroes. He brought a spark in his grey life. No matter how many times Peter lied to his friend, in the end they worked it all out.
He looked down at his clawed hands, at his Spider man suit, touched the arachnid emblem.
But the bitter taste was still present. He recalled being called a liar, a menace. He recalled how Harry pretended to be the 'black spidey' only to show how 'better' he is than him, how many times the boy hurt him. Controlled by a symbiote or not, he still hurt him. And Norman…
The thought of the man made him growl loudly. He wasn't fully sure why he was feeling this way. Yes, the man was the source of so many problems, the source of so many tragedies, but it was all in the past. He was redeemed, he became a hero, became a better person…
Few quiet footsteps made him snap out of his conflicted thoughts. Turning his head towards the sound, he saw his friend. He stood only few meters away from him, despite the fact of him still being… a monster.
The seriousness on Harry's face, the way he was looking at him… It felt like looking in the mirror. Another blurred memory sparkled before his eyes. 'Looks like we've swapped places.' The thought made him chuckle quietly, unsurely.
He was still aware, he was still here, he was still Spidey, still remembered Uncle Ben's words. Then why… Why didn't he feel like himself? The hurricane of raw emotions, the drive and drunking feeling of freedom… He didn't feel the same spark inside anymore.
It was barely feltable, buried somewhere deep down under the weight of new responsibilities that he needed to follow in order to keep things under control, in order to keep himself under control. And he hated it.
The feeling of hatred appeared as suddenly and powerfully as the painful transformation that turned him into this monster. He hated everything: his friends, his family, his teammates, all the responsibilities he had, but at the same time he knew that he couldn't. That he shouldn't.
They were always there for him, always helping him, and his family… his Aunt… He tried to shake the feeling off, make it disappear… He shouldn't feel this way. He shouldn't feel all the hatred. It was wrong, it didn't make any sense!
But the feeling didn't leave.
It took a hold on his heart, made him shut his eyes. Burning feeling in his gut felt agonizing. Every tiny little emotion, at that moment it didn't even matter what emotion, be it out of rage, jealousy, fear, felt like a trigger, something that will make him disappear in the darkness again.
"Side by side, we stand at light, one wrong move and you are doomed" Strange words echoed in his head.
So many thoughts, so many conflicting feelings, emotions, desire, it was overwhelming. The feeling of someone's touch startled him. Snapping his eyes open, he took a step back, away from the boy, away from someone who wants to help him.
"Help...?" Sudden thought hit him like a knife, "I don't need help!" A wave of anger boiled inside of him. With a step forward, he snarled at Harry, made him step back. He put the boy on his rightful place, made him understand who the leader is. But… It was wrong.
It is so wrong! Harry is a teammate, not a subordinate; he is a friend, not an enemy. 'Then why he's so stubborn?' Another thought, louder and stronger one whispered in his head, 'Why doesn't he understand that i don't need help!?'
Half-Goblin silently faced Harry Osborn with a hostile stare. 'I'm fine, why can't you see it?!' Gritting his sharp teeth, he took another step towards the boy who backed away. 'I can do it! I am the one in control!' He stood before him. 'I am Spiderman! I AM A HERO!' He shouted internally.
The resentment, the anger and disappointment took control over him, pushed his true self back, buried under the weight of raw emotions, 'Heroes don't need help! Why can't you see it!? Why are you so fucking BLIN-!?'
Loud explosion interrupted the inner shouting, made him turn and look who dared to do it. His eyes narrowed even more when he spotted another hero, the man in white, blue and red suit. The last person he wanted to see at that moment, Norman Osborn.
New dose of raw rage rose high in his soul. Tight hold on his guts made him want to throw up. This man. This fucking stupid man. He- He didn't- He is the one who- He will-! Too many thoughts fought in his head, trying to bite each other's heads off like hungry wolfs.
More than anything he wanted to jump on the man, deepen his new sharp claws in his flesh, tear him apart. Break him piece by piece, make Norman feel all the pain he made Peter feel. Make him pay the price for his actions.
Rage, confusion, fear, pain, everything mixed in an agonizing symphony in his head. Too many memories flew before his eyes, blinded him for a moment. He remembered everything, every word said by the man, every action.
Pain, so much pain was caused by this man, but it didn't make any sense. He changed, he became a better person, he learned on most of his mistakes. None of this makes any sense. He is not the one we- I'm looking for! He is not the one who did this. It was all Taskmaster's fault!
But… The pain. He slowly raised his hand and touched his neck. The pain, it wasn't coming from here. Eyes opened a bit, filled with confusion. The injection was here, then… why… His eyes locked on his right wrist. Why… His hand started to tremble. WHY…!?
"Spiderman!" The voice made him snap out of his thoughts and look at the man. He stood in front of his son, his stubborn and stupid son who keeps on trying and trying despite the fact that he lost from the very start. Such a waste of time, indeed.
"Listen, Spiderman, you need to calm down" The sound of firm voice made altered Spidey clench his hands in fists, "This can't keep going on, had you seen what you've been doing?" He glared around the room, "This is why you need to come with us, so we can cure you, so we can help yo-"
"No! Forget it!" His eyes shined brighter as he stared at the man. His mind was screaming to him how stupidly he's acting, how wrong all of this is, but it didn't matter to him anymore. Nothing mattered now that he was back in control. Now that he could see everything clearly.
The man and a boy looked shocked. He was surprised as well, his voice was a lot deeper, rougher and sounded clearer than before. There were no longer growling escaping his throat along with the words, unless he wanted so… Yet, he wanted so.
"I don't need your help! I don't need anybody's help!" He shot an antagonistic stare at them. Help, help, help. He was starting to get sick of hearing this word. It was HIS job helping those around him, not them trying to help him, "I'm FINE!"
"No, you're not fine!" His best friend shouted. Oh, how much he hated hearing this, "Look at yourself! Can't you see it? This is wrong!" Harry took a step towards him, but was stopped by his father who held him by his shoulder, "This is not who you are! You're not the-"
"I KNOW WHO I AM!" His voice rose an octave on two higher, every word was filled with venom and fury, "I AM ULTIMATE SPIDER MAN! I AM A HERO! AND HEROES DON'T GET SAVED!" His wild eyes were locked on Harry's face, "I. AM. FINE! WHY CAN'T YOU SEE IT!?"
The two took a step back when Altered Spiderman took a step towards them, "I'VE EARNED MY TITLE! I SAVED THE WORLD SO MANY TIMES! I PROVED HOW ULTIMATE I TRULY AM AND I WON'T LET ANYONE TELL ME WHAT TO DO!"
"Nobody tries to tell you what to do!" Harry shouted. His voice was full of worry and fear, "This isn't you talking, and I know it! The Goblin Serum tries to corrupt your mind, don't let it! Peter, please! You have to fight it!"
"~Peter, It tries to corrupt your mind, you have to fight it~" He mimicked Harry before letting out an enraged snort, "I've saved your miserable live so many times, I fought teeth and nails in order to keep my friends safe and THIS is how I get paid? MY FRIEND TELLS ME THAT I'M NOT MYSELF ANYMORE!?"
"No, I never said this!" Now Harry's voice was full of terror. Things took completely opposite turn from what they expected, "I am thankful for everything you've done, really! This is why I want to help you! I want to pay the debt and-!"
"FORGET ABOUT THE FUCKING DEBT!" Goblin Peter furiously interrupted his friend. He was feeling so sick of it all, "IT WAS ALL IN THE PAST! GONE! FORGOTTEN! I DON'T CARE ANYMORE!" His brawny body started to tremble.
Words were flying out of his mouth none controllably, pushing and bumping into one another, "YOU, YOUR FATHER, S.H.I.L.D, NICK FURY, MARY JANE, AUNT MAY… I'M SO SICK OF ALL OF YOU! I'M DONE LISTENING TO WHAT ANY OF YOU SAY!"
"ALL THESE YEARS I'VE BEEN DOING NOTHING BUT HELPING EVERYONE! SAVING EVERYONE! FIGHTING DAY AND NIGHT, ONLY TO BE ALWAYS CALLED A MENACE AND A LIAR!" He roared loudly at two Osborns, "I'VE HAD ENOUGH!"
With a quick move of a hand, he shot webs towards the nearest table and caught it with his meaty clawed hand, "From now on, only I decide what to do! I am the ONLY ONE who has the voice to speak!" He broke the table and threw the pieces of it away, "AND I'LL PROVE THEM WRONG!"
With a speed of a lightning, he shot webs towards Older Osborn, "I'LL MAKE THEM SEE HOW MUCH OF A HERO I AM!" With a quick move, he punched him in the chin, knocking him away, "AND I WON'T LET ANYONE STAY IN MY WAY!"
His yellow eyes locked on Harry, on his friend. Sinister smile crawled on his lips, but before he could do anything, his spider sense went off. Jumping back and avoiding the blast, he growled at the man that dared to attack him. Oh, another moment of de ja vu.
"Step aside, Norman! Unless you want to get hurt" He cracked his knuckles, "But oh, wait, of course, you CAN'T do it! Your pride and stubbornness won't let you stand in the crowd when there's another chance to proof how of a 'changed man' you've become!"
"Spider man, you don't know what you're doing!" Their eyes locked, both faces had enraged expression, "Listen to me, i know how hard it is to resist the desire to cause chaos, but you have t- no you MUST do it! If you care about everyone you love!"
"Just because you've been the Goblin in the past, doesn't mean we're anything alike!" Clenching hands in fists, Altered Spiderman dashed at the man. Despite his altered form, his speed and reflexes doubled, letting him move even faster than before.
"Unlike you, I know what it's like to have a great power!" Punch, "Unlike you, I already paid the price when I lost myself in the desire to use it for selfish reasons!" Another punch, "Unlike you, I HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITIES THAT NEED TO BE GRAND!" With a final punch the man was knocked off his feet.
Mutated young adult looked at him with disgust, "I am a hero, Norman! No matter what!" He took a step towards him, "I thought… You understood this. I thought you'd take MY SIDE!" He shot webs towards Norman and caught the man by his collar, "But it seems you decided to stick on yours"
"And if you're not with me…" His eyes shined with fury, "THEN YOU ARE AGAINST ME!" Smashing the man against the floor, he started to brutally beat him up. Punch after punch, kick after kick, he didn't stop when his armor cracked, didn't stop when he collapsed on the floor coughing.
"Peter, STOP!" His fist stopped a meter away from his friend's face. His eyes opened a bit, but almost immediately narrowed. Harry stood before his father, hands thrown at the sides, blue eyes stared in his yellow ones.
"You can't do this!" Young Osborn's voice was barely able to break through an enraged hurricane in his soul, "Yes, my dad wasn't the best person in the past, but he's CHANGED! He LEARNED on his mistakes! You've seen it yourself!"
"He may be a changed man now, but he's still the same prideful peacock who can't see the obvious!" His voice was full of despise as he spoke, "I am a hero, Harry! Nothing in me changed! All that I've gotten is just a bit more power"
He looked at his hand, moved his clawed fingers as small grin crawled on his lips, "I've been through this in the past. Great power can't corrupt my mind anymore, it can't change who I am! All it done to me, gave a new knowledge, helped me remember… Everything"
Altered Peter's eyes darted and locked on his friend's face, "Over all these years I've got so used to my powers that I forgot what it's like to feel the rush of emotions, to feel the drive, to feel the tempting desire to use them" Dark chuckle escaped his mouth, "And how hard it can be to hold back"
He raised his hand and pointed at the room, "THIS is what untamed power lead to, destruction and chaos" Peter's voice contained a hint of sadness and anger at himself for letting this happen, "But this…" He looked at his clawed hands that were trembling, "THIS is what tamed power can lead to if-"
"Hurting people you care about?" Smile washed off his lips when Harry interrupted his speech. The boy took a step towards his father and helped him stand under the angered gaze of Altered Spidey, "This is the destructive power, Pete, it changes people. You know it better than anyone else"
"It isn't the power, it's how you use it" Wild shine in his eyes returned, "The Goblin, it is a decease that needs to be cured, but it can become something greater if you know how to handle such power…" An insane smirk appeared on his face, "And I CAN handle it! I CAN use it for GOOD!"
He threw both hands in the air, "Just think of everything that can be done now! Proving to people how wrong they were, stopping all the criminals once and for all!" He looked at Harry. His eyes were sparking with happiness that sent chills down the boy's spine, "Do you trust me?"
"I…" The boy choked on his own words. He didn't know how to answer, it was clearly written on his face and the longer Peter was looking at him, the more his smile was disappearing off his lips. Tensed silence once again fell between the two.
"Pete, listen" Harry took a step forward as he finally found the right words, "I do trust you, and I know that you out of everyone can do it, but… Please, just please, don't" The boy raised his hand and reached to his arm only for him to move back, "You're not thinking straight"
"Not thinking straight? I'm not thinking straight!?" Something clicked in his head, a new dose of rage blinded him, "I AM thinking straight! If I wasn't, I would have gone on another rampage! But I DIDN'T!" He roared. Why he's so stupid!?
"I knew you wouldn't understand…" He ran a hand through his hair, "… Why should I even care? I am Ultimate Spider Man! I am a leader while you're nothing at all!" He laughed darkly, "Nothing, but my Teammate…" Psychotic smile crawled on his lips, "A teammate that I don't need anymore!"
Altered Spidey shot webs in Harry's direction and threw him towards the window. The glass shattered and the boy collapsed on the ground, luckily the height of the building wasn't too big and it didn't leave much of injuries.
Altered Spider man glared at Iron Patriot with a chuckle before jumping out of the building through the same window. He had enough of small rooms and closed areas, there was no space for his favorite acrobatic tricks and web swinging. There was no space for freedom.
Cackling under his breath, the mutated hero dashed towards his teammate and punched him in the chin, knocking him back on the ground, "Is something wrong, friend!?" He laughed manically, looking at Harry. So weak, so useless, he doesn't need such teammate.
"Pete, please!" Harry looked him in the eyes. For a split second confusion and worry appeared on Altered Peter's face, but only for a second. Rage distorted his face as quickly as the alarm clock gets turned off.
"I'm not Peter! Old Peter Parker is dead!" Taking Harry by his collar, "I am the new Peter! The Better Peter! The one who won't repeat the same mistakes all over again!" He raised his clawed hand, yellow eyes locked on his friend's carotid. Just one move and…
Suddenly his spider sense went off. He let go of Harry and, making a back flip, landed on the ground. His eyes spotted the one who did it, "You again… " His voice was full of anger, yet small hint of curiosity was present, "What do you plan to do, huh? Keep on talking, hoping it'll work?"
"Keep on trying to remind you how wrong all of this is!" Without a warning, the man shot in his direction again, making Altered Spidey dodge the attack, "Not only wrong, but also dangerous! For both, people around you and also yourself!"
"Oh, please, all your talking starts to sound like father trying to re-sure his adopted son how stupidly he's acting!" He huffed, "What, fucked up with your real son…" He glared at Harry, "… and wanted to work on your mistakes on someone else? Pretty funny idea I must say"
Before the man could answer, Altered Spidey shot webs, successfully blinding him before unleashing combo of attacks upon the Older Osborn. He was able to hear Harry's voice, how he was shouting something, but he didn't care.
Kicking Iron Patriot in the side and making him roll away, he shot webs at Harry's mouth, to prevent the boy from talking before turning to look at the man, "But it never had its chances of working. Not in the past, not now" He frowned.
"Don't forget that I still have my Aunt and-" He stopped, eyes widened a bit when a few memories flew before them, "Speaking of Aunt May. I really should pay a visit to her…" Smirk appeared on his lips, "… She must be so worried"
"No, don't-!" The powerful punch interrupted the man, knocked back on the ground. The Altered hero stood tall and glared antagonistically at Older Osborn. He heard how Harry snapped the webs off and stood on his legs, but one move of a hand and the boy was caught in a web-trap.
"After all, I don't think she'll make such of a fuss about her nephew being turned into a Goblin. She knows I've been through MUCH worse than this! And maybe she'll take my side!" He chuckled quietly, small more genuine smile appeared on his lips, "She's a family after all!"
"But…" His ear twitched a bit at the sudden thought, "Why should I even care about such thing as family?" Familiar sparkle in his eyes disappeared, "Family gives more reasons to worry. Family gives weakness, family is what holds back. It's another golden cage"
"And I want to be free" His eyes shined, "Yeah… Yeah! I don't need her! I don't need anybody!" He laughed loudly, holding his head. It was hurting, there were too many thoughts, too many sounds and whispers that were preventing from thinking clearly, "There's only one thing I need. Yes. Yes!"
Turning his head and looking at two Osborns, he chuckled, "It has been fun and all that stuff, but I've got some important things to do" Looking at the buildings, smile on his lips got wider, "Tell MJ, I've said hello! If she's still alive! Ahaha!"
Cackling manically, he jumped over the fence and landed on the ground. Wind was howling loudly, every sound was so loud and was sounding so clear. It was something new, something strange but something so… wonderful.
"Maybe, it's not so bad after all" He whispered, crawling up the mirrored wall. Strange, but all the worries disappeared. He was still in his Spiderman suit and without a mask, but it didn't bother him. He was new Peter and new Peter doesn't anything to worry about.
"Still handsome, at most part at least" He smirked, looking at his reflection, "Can't believe I overreacted so awfully, but, oh, guess memories are still pretty fresh" He frowned, remembering the Goblin before shaking his head and looking up.
With a few powerful leaps, he landed on the roof, "Now where was i-?" Sudden incoming call interrupted him. With a quiet growl, he recognized the face of a man who was calling. It was Nick Fury. Again.
"Deal with your shit by yourself, Fury, It's not my responsibility anymore" He cancelled the call and turned it off so nobody going to call him anymore, "I've got much more important things to take care of!"
He jumped towards the next building and landed on the wall. The first, the second and third… It was so hard to choose which one to take care of first. All of them contained their winning gifts, yet giant risks and head pain.
Rip Taskmaster apart? S.H.I.L.D will immediately find out about his 'condition' and going to drag their nose where they shouldn't. No. Not now, at least.
Take the thing he needs the most now? Most likely yeah, after all, it'll make things much easier. And will add a lot more fairness if his annoying friends going to stay in his way.
Pay a visit to his Aunt? … It won't be necessary. But what will be, is return home for a few moments. There are some things that will be as needed as his current main goal.
"Then so be it" Chuckling darkly, he jumped off the wall and landed on the next one.
Maybe his web shooters will need small upgrade too.
Running up the wall, he caught the cliff of the roof and jumped over it with ease.
After all, things have changed.
And new Spider man needs much better equipment.
