Ennoshita and Suga agreed they should sit together at the front of the group. They were expecting to be inundated with questions. Daichi and Asahi agreed they should split up and sit near the most emotional in the group. They trusted Kiyoko to take care of Yachi which meant Asahi could sit with Hinata and Daichi politely asked to be seated next to Nishinoya. Yamaguchi and Tsukkishima weren't about to be separated and Tanaka clearly wanted to be left alone which left Narita and Kinoshita sitting together.
"Okay, we should probably get our questions together now. We'll start one by one. Asahi or Hinata, any questions?" Suga asked.
The tangerine was quick to fire off questions, "Why did he run away? Is he hurt? What can we do for him? Did we hurt him? Will he ever forgive us? What does he need? Will he be okay? Is he still hurting from what we said and did? How do we make it up to him?" Hinata asked it all in one breath and when he finished he slumped down with a long exhale.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, Suga couldn't contain a small smile. "Well what we can do for him and what he needs are kind of the same. Ennoshita, should we combine it into 'What do you need from us?'"Suga asked. Ennoshita nodded and scribbled it down.
"I think it's fair to ask him 'What made you decide to run away?'" Ennoshita proposed. Suga was the one to nod this time and again there was scribbling on the papers.
"Whether or not he's hurt and going to be okay is something Coach and Takeda-sensei will be finding out. They'll tell us what we need to know so unless Kageyama volunteers information I think we should let it be. Is that okay, Hinata?" Suga asked gently.
Hinata just nodded glumly.
"I think we can safely say he was hurt by us, but whether or not he'll ever forgive us. Only time will tell. I don't think it's fair to put him on the spot with that question. Do you?" Suga asked.
Ennoshita quickly shook his head and Hinata eventually relented shaking his head dejectedly. "Asahi, do you have anything to add?" Ennoshita asked.
Asahi shook his head and only mumbled, "I just want him to be okay."
Narita and Kinoshita were sitting across from them so they were put on the spot next. "Narita, Kinoshita, any questions you'd like us to ask?"
The boys mumbled something to each other before Kinoshita cleared his throat. "Umm...we think it's kind of weird that no one's been able to get a hold of his parents. And even more weird that they haven't responded to any messages," he offered.
Suga seemed to think about that for a time, "We'll have Takeda-sensei ask him about it. Make sure everything is arranged on that front, but I think that's too private a topic for us to push him to talk about. Anything else?"
The boys exchanged glances before shaking his head. Nishinoya and Daichi sat right behind them so they were up next.
Nishinoya didn't hesitate to jump in, "What the hell was he thinking?! Why didn't he just talk to someone?"
Ennoshita jumped in to stop his line of questioning. "Nishinoya! That is not an appropriate line of questioning. He does not need to be confronted aggressively. In fact, that's the last thing he needs. We need to remain calm."
Nishinoya looked down a light blush coloring his cheeks as he muttered an apology.
Suga had more to add though, "While that definitely was not a helpful approach, I do think it's worthwhile to ensure he knows we're here for when he needs us. Maybe not really a question-"
"We could ask him if there's anything we can do so he feels more comfortable coming to us with any problems," Ennoshita suggested.
"I like that idea. Are you okay with that, Noya?" Suga asked. The libero just nodded.
"Daichi, how about you?"
"I'd like to see if someone can stay with him for a few days. Especially since we haven't been able to reach his parents and Iwaizumi and Oikawa said the house was empty," Daichi said practically.
"That is really important. Coach and sensei might cover it, but we'll be sure to ask if he has someone to stay with. If he doesn't we'll ask if there's anyone he'd feel comfortable staying with him. Should he refuse we'll need to turn it over to coach and sensei. That's not a topic we should push," Suga offered. "Kiyoko or Yachi?"
"We should see if there's anything we can pick up on our way to make him more comfortable. Aloe Vera, ice packs, or anything like that," Kiyoko answered without missing a beat. Yachi quickly nodded in agreement and Ennoshita added the question to their list.
There was a pause and when they added no other questions it was Tsukkishima and Yamaguchi's turn. "We need to figure out if there's anyone we should contact. Obviously, his parents aren't answering but maybe there's other family or a family friend," Tsukki offered.
Ennoshita nodded before Yamaguchi added another thought. "Was any of his stuff forgotten at the training camp? Did he lose any of his stuff on the way?"
"Those are both really good questions," Ennoshita offered from his place hunched over a piece of paper. "Anything else?"
Yamaguchi shook his head but Tsukkishima seemed to think for a moment before shaking his head as well.
"Tanaka, anything you'd like asked?" Suga asked.
Tanaka shook his head but added, "Coach Ukai, Takeda Sensei, my sister is going to tell Kageyama we're coming to check on him now. She wanted me to tell you so you won't be surprised if he's...upset when you get there. But she wants to do it now so hopefully he has time to calm down and adjust a bit before we get there."
"Thank you, Tanaka."
--WITH KAGEYAMA--
Kageyama's heart sped up when a van pulled to the side of the road. Although it looked familiar, he couldn't place it and after his last encounter with passerby's he couldn't calm his nerves.
"Kageyama, are you okay?" the voice asked softly from in front of him.
When Kageyama looked up, he remembered why the van was familiar. "You're Tanaka's sister right?" he asked.
The woman smiled brightly and nodded. "You're calling me Nee-San though."
"But-"
"Nope, no buts," she said firmly not allowing any arguments.
"How-how did you-"
Again Tanaka Saeko cut him off with her answer, "Tanaka texted me. You're team is worried about you, Kageyama."
A hitched sob tore through his sore throat. "Do they-are they mad?" His stomach rolled at the thought of facing his team after all of this and he ended up dry heaving. He wasn't sure if he should be thankful there was nothing in his stomach to vomit or not. He was breathing too fast.
"No, Kageyama, they are not mad. Not at you. They were scared and when they know you're safe they are going to be so relieved," the woman offered calmly. Her assurance didn't have the intended affect.
"No!" Kageyama almost screamed in desperation. His hand shot up to his sore throat and his breath was coming out in even shorter gasps.
"Hey, hey, Kageyama take a deep breath for me. Don't you dare pass out! Breathe deeply. Just follow my breathing okay?" Tanaka Saeko instructed. She started emphasizing her breathing and eventually the boy's breathing evened out. "That's good. You're doing really good, Kageyama. Keep breathing just like that."
Several minutes later, Tanaka Saeko spoke again, "I don't know about you, but this is seriously uncomfortable. Let's move to the van. It'll be cooler there and I have some water."
Kageyama really didn't want to move, but he really wanted the promised water. He nodded in agreement but more red was added to his face when he needed to lean heavily against his teammates sister to make his way to the van.
When he was at the van, feeling the cool air against his hot skin, his mind turned off. All he could do was take slow sips of the water offered to him. He was focused on nothing else. Completely unaware of his surroundings, Kageyama had no idea how much time had passed before the woman was pulling his attention back to her.
"Kageyama, I need you to focus on me, please."
He forced his eyes to focus on this woman he would now call friend. "O-okay," he croaked.
"Kageyama, I know we don't know each other very well, but I hope you know you can trust me."
Her statement came out more like a question so Kageyama nodded before adding, "You're probably my only friend."
Saeko's smile turned a little sad as she answered, "Well, I'm glad you consider me a friend because you're my friend too. But, Kageyama, I had to tell your team I found you. At the very least your coach and Sensei needed to know you were safe. Do you understand?"
Kageyama hesitantly nodded thinking he knew where this conversation was headed.
"Everyone is relieved I found you safe. They are NOT mad. If they were I'd kick all their asses," Saeko added. She smiled when her comment got the small laugh she'd hoped for. "They are worried about your health and need to see you. Make sure you're not injured or sick."
Tears gathered in Kageyama's eyes as he breathing started to pick up again.
"Hey, kid, focus on your breathing okay. I'll kick your ass too if you faint on me. Deep breaths remember."
Once again, Kageyama followed his friend's breathing and she waited for several minutes before continuing. "You're team's bus is on the way and I talked to them. You know me. If they doesn't listen to me, they will regret it. You trust me, right?"
While focusing so hard on keeping his breathing deep, slow, and steady, Kageyama only managed a small nod.
"Only Ukai, Takeda, Suga, and Ennoshita are going to come off the bus, okay? I made it very clear they are not allowed to upset you. They're going to have more water for you and I believe they also have some food gathered." She was speaking softly, slowly, and very calmly, watching him very closely for any negative reaction. When she saw he was staying calm she continued, "You're coach is going to talk to your teammates before they get here. Everyone's going to keep things as comfortable as possible, okay?"
"Wh-when are they going to be here?"
"They'll be here in about ten minutes."
Kageyama only managed a small nod as his mind retreated into itself once again.
