Today was a monumental day for Ruby, rekindling her love for learning. With her backpack securely in place, she skipped up the gravel steps of Michelle Obama Middle School, her heart brimming with excitement. Today marked the beginning of her first gifted science class, a course her new friends had raved about. They had spoken of its challenges, how it pushed students beyond their limits, and the exceptional teachers who guided them. Ruby was ready to embrace this new academic adventure with open arms!
As Ruby stepped into the classroom, her eyes were immediately drawn to a figure standing at the front. He was tall, standing at an imposing 6'3, with long, lustrous, purplish-black hair tied back in a sophisticated ponytail. "Good morning, class," he began, his voice calm and authoritative. "My name is Mr. Starlighter, and I'll be your science educator for this term."
Ruby sank into her seat, her eyes fixed on the new instructor. Something about him seemed familiar, yet she couldn't quite place it as Mr. Starlighter began writing on the whiteboard with impeccable penmanship. She leaned in, eager to absorb every word and delve into the world of science. This was the first time since leaving her home planet that she was thrilled about school again. Consequently, she was determined to prove she belonged to and with her friends in these advanced lessons.
"Today, we'll be diving into the wonders of astronomy," he announced, his voice filled with a hint of exhilaration. "We'll explore the formation of stars, the life cycle of galaxies, and the mysteries of black holes. These are not just distant celestial objects, but gateways to comprehending the universe and our place in it." He smiled as he brushed a stray hair from his eyes, "However, I feel it's best since I'm new to this school if we introduce ourselves before exploring the universe's splendors. So please, each of you, tell me your name and something you find unique about yourself."
The students, already in awe of Mr. Starlighter, quickly complied with his request. After introducing themselves, he smiled and asked each student a few questions. To be fair, Mr. Starlighter gave a basic description of himself. He revealed that his family included his parents, his younger sister Kya, and himself. That he was more a cat person then a dog person. Moreover, he was enthusiastic about proving himself an excellent teacher since this was his first year teaching!
The class was consumed by anticipation and curiosity as students leaned forward in their seats, eager to impress their new teacher. 'Can anyone tell me why stars appear to twinkle?' he asked, scanning the room, his eyes meeting each student's gaze.
Ruby raised her hand, enthusiastic to participate. 'It's because of the Earth's atmosphere, correct? The light from the stars gets bent in different directions as it passes through the layers of air.' The other students nodded in agreement, impressed by her knowledge.
"Excellent, Ruby," Mr. Starlighter replied with an encouraging smile. "Precisely. The air movement in our atmosphere causes the light from stars to bend, making them appear to twinkle."
Ruby blushed a little. It wasn't like she didn't know anything about life beyond Earth, given that she was an alien in disguise. But she found it quite interesting to study it from a human's perspective!
Elsewhere, Crystal and her human best friend Eve had gone to a quaint outdoor coffee cafe. The heavenly aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the distant sounds of city life, creating a relatively peaceful atmosphere. Crystal slowly sipped her latte, savoring the creamy texture, while Eve stirred her iced coffee thoughtfully.
"You know," Eve began, her eyes twinkling with curiosity, "I meant to ask more about your life before we met. We haven't known each other long, but you've always been secretive concerning your past. I'm curious: what was it like growing up?"
Crystal chuckled, feeling a bit guarded. After all, only Mystery Inc. knew the truth about herself and her family. Also, she didn't want to bend or break the laws that permitted her to come back to Earth in the first place. The most significant is that no one else could discover her family's secrets! However, she did trust Eve, so she figured she could give her a short, revised version of her past.
"Well, I grew up in a city called Crystal City. Trust me, compared to Chicago? It seemed like it was on another planet! My parents, renowned in their respective fields, always had high expectations for me. They were why I had to take in Ruby since they were both offered career opportunities neither could pass up."
Eve leaned in, her curiosity unmistakable. "What about Peridot? I remember you mentioning him once, but you never went into details. What was he like?"
Crystal hesitated, glancing down at her white cup. "Peridot... he was complicated. He was charming at first, but there was always something off. He could be so controlling and selfish. It wasn't a healthy relationship. Yet I don't think all his behavior issues exclusively came from him."
Eve's expression softened with deep empathy. "I'm truly sorry you went through that, Crystal. But it's good you're out of it now. Yet, why do you feel he wasn't entirely at fault?"
Crystal slowly explained her uneasy feelings: " These are just some rumors I heard; my ex-bestie Kya was his sister, and to be fair, she wasn't especially nice to her brother. So, he had some underlying problems at home he didn't want to talk about. Regardless, it was for the best. I learned much from that experience, even if it was tough."
Eve reached out and squeezed her friend's hand. "And look at you now, stronger and wiser. Plus, you've got Shaggy and Ruby. They must keep you busy."
Crystal smiled, grateful for her friend's support. "You're right. Ruby's a handful, but she's also a joy. And Shaggy... well, he's my rock." As they continued to talk, the conversation shifted to lighter topics, but their bond felt unbreakable.
As night blanketed the Windy City, the dinner rush was in full swing at the Vandom family restaurant. Shaggy weaved through the overcrowded tables, expertly balancing trays laden with steaming plates of food. The clatter of tableware and the hum of various voices filled the air as he approached a new patron sitting alone at a corner table. The gentleman was strikingly tall, around 6'3", with long purplish-black hair tied back in an elegant ponytail. His skin had a warm, earthy tone reminiscent of Native American heritage, and he wore a dark shirt and dress pants.
Shaggy couldn't help but notice the man's piercing green eyes, which seemed to take in every detail of the bustling room. "Good evening, sir. What can I get you started with tonight?" Shaggy asked, flashing his familiar friendly smile.
The man glanced at the menu briefly before looking up at Shaggy. "Do you have any gluten-free pasta alternatives?"
Shaggy nodded. "Yes, we do. We have a rice-based gluten-free pasta that's quite popular."
"Excellent," the man replied, his tone polite but firm. "And what about sugar-free meals? My species can't metabolize gluten or sugar."
Shaggy's confusion deepened at the man's subsequent request. "Sugar-free meals? My species can't metabolize gluten or sugar." Shaggy's mind raced, trying to make sense of the peculiar phrasing. He managed to recompose himself, offering a few sugar-free alternatives. "We have a sugar-free grilled chicken salad, or if you're in the mood for something lighter, we have a sugar-free vegetable stir-fry."
The man nodded approvingly. "I'll have the sugar-free vegetable stir-fry and a glass of ice water," he said, fiddling with a small silver pin on his collar.
"Coming right up," Shaggy said, jotting down the order. As he turned to leave, he couldn't shake the feeling that there was something unusual regarding this customer. But with the dinner rush in full swing, he didn't have time to dwell on it.
As he headed back to the kitchen to place the order, Shaggy couldn't help but wonder about the man's peculiar dietary restrictions and the strange way he had phrased it. He was intrigued by the mystery surrounding this customer, and a part of him was eager to learn more. Little did he know, he had just served Peridot Starlighter, his girlfriend Crystal's ex, who was now on Earth and teaching at Ruby's school.
