Moment 1: Will's funeral.
Alicia nor Diane expected Cary to come to Will's funeral but he has. He wraps an arm around Alicia's shoulder when she starts to sob as stories are traded about the love of her life,he helps her stand when they all leave the church. He holds her body when she falls to the ground as they watch Will's coffin be lowered into the wet, freshly dug ground. He presses her head into his chest when she starts wailing after everyone has left, apart from them and Diane.
"It's gonna be okay, Alicia." The young name partner whispers to her, Alicia doesn't answer her partner because she knows that, with Will dead, nothing in her life will ever be okay again. Cary picks her up and carries her to their cars and buckles her into the passenger side while Diane gets into the drivers side.
"You can take tomorrow off, call if you need me." He says to her, placing a brotherly kiss on her forehead and closing the door, watching as Diane drives them away.
Moment 2: Family dinner
Laughter rings through the apartment. There are three people in the apartment: 2 adults and one child. They're sitting around the table, eating Alicia's homemade Lasagne.
"Oh come on, you were not!" Cary Ago exclaims as he looks at his partner and her daughter who is laughing.
"I was, I was a little bit of a party girl in college. I blame Will." Alicia says with a sad laugh as her eyes wonder at the photo she's displayed on the desk in the dining room. "Will was always good at getting me out of my comfort zone for a little while and he didn't push me into staying if I wanted to leave, but how he finished Law School is still a mystery to me, a mystery I'll never solve." Alicia finishes off her wine and gets to her feet. "Do you two want any cheesecake? It's chocolate." She asks as she changes the subject from the dead love of her life. Grace shouts yes as she helps clear the table with Cary's help.
"Stay for a movie, Cary?" Grace asks as she pats the couch spot beside her, Cary looks at his partner's daughter then back at his partner who shrugs. "If you get invited for a movie night, you're a part of the family." His partner says. He smiles and sits down beside Grace.
"What's the movie, Grace?" Cary asks, Grace giggles. "Mom and I love Disney so we're going to watch Lady and the Tramp 2." Grace says excitedly. He finds it hard not to smile at the teenagers' excitement.
"Mom, the popcorn should be done by now!" Grace calls from the couch, Cary chuckles. Suddenly, Alicia sits down beside him and hands her daughter the bowl of popcorn.
Grace falls asleep halfway through the movie, leaning into Cary's side. "I think we should get this one to bed, Alicia." He whispers to Alicia. "Yeah, I'll wake her up. Cary shakes his head, "No, don't I carry her to her room." He tells her as he lifts the slumbering teenager into his arms and carries her to her bedroom, tucking her in and closing the door.
Alicia is cleaning the dishes when he comes out of her daughter's room. "She's out like a light." Cary says with a chuckle, taking the beer from her hand and leans against the counter. "It always does, thank you for coming over, we've enjoyed having you over." Alicia says, Cary places a hand on her arm. "Thanks for the invite."
His partner invited him for dinner this morning and he found it hard to decide whether or not to go and spend an evening with her and her daughter. He had decided against going until Alicia told him that it was lonely with just her and Grace in the apartment so he went and had dinner with his partner and her daughter.
"Well, you're welcome here anytime." Alicia says as she wipes her hands on a dish towel.
He smiles as his partner when she quickly hugs him and pours herself a glass of wine.
He was kicked out of the house when he was 18 so he didn't have any family dinners, so to be included in this one, is nice.
Moment 3: Drunken phone call.
He should have expected this to happen, but because it's Alicia, he didn't. His phone rings beside him and he looks at the caller ID and answers it when he sees it's Alicia.
"Alicia, is everything okay?" He asks, he can hear the telltale sound of wine being poured into a glass on her end of the phone.
"Nooooo, he's dead and I'm drunk." His partner says drunkenly, sadly. He closes his eyes. He should have known he'd get some type of call from her or from Grace today, seeing as it's the year anniversary of Will's death.
"I know, and I'm so sorry." He replies softly. The truth is: he misses the older lawyer too, he was good to him, always treated him with respect.
"I loved him, he died not knowing that I loved him." Cary knows how hard it's been for his partner living without Will in her life this past year, and has struggled with the knowledge that he died loving her despite everything that transpired.
"He loved you too, Alicia. You have to know that. He loved you so much." Cary says, Alicia hums drunkenly.
"Yes, Diane said that the day he died but I don't believe that. He couldn't have loved me. I hurt him too much for him to love me." Alicia tells him sadly, believing what she's saying. Cary sighs. She's too drunk to listen to reason.
"Alicia, listen to me, Will loved you. We all knew that and so do you, you're just hurting right now. So why don't you go to bed, dream about Will and think about how much he loved you, okay?" Alicia huffs.
"Okay, goodnight, Cary." He smiles.
"Goodnight, Alicia." He replies, Alicia hangs up and he throws his phone down beside him.
