"We got to go." Thomas muttered as soon as he came back.
"What's up?" Minho asked, but Thomas ignored him and started panicking and rushing them.
"We got to go. We got to go, right now!" His voice stuttered as he went near the doors and locked them from inside.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Minho tried asking again.
"They're coming. We got to go." Thomas kept on repeating the same thing and pulled the sheets from the mattress to tie the door's handles together. "Come on! They're coming from us." Thomas urged them.
"What happened in there?" Minho asked. Thomas's behavior was making them all confused and nervous.
Frypan quickly turned around to Aris and asked, "Aris, what happened?" Everybody turned their attention to Aris as well, hoping for some answers, but he stood silent, looking shocked without saying any word.
'This is ridiculous.' Newt turned back towards Thomas, whose hands kept fumbling as he tried to tie down the door handles. "Thomas, can you just calm down and talk to us." Newt persisted.
"She's alive." Thomas finally said something different from, 'We got to go.'
"Who's she?" Frypan asked. "Teresa?"
"Ava." Thomas corrected without looking at them, still busy with the doors. "Ava."
"Ava?" Newt thought for a moment, but quickly realized he didn't care about that. What he cared about was Thomas. He looked like he could get a panic attack just like in the library but this time far worse. Newt again tried to make him stop. "Would you just turn around and talk to us?"
"It's WICKED!" Thomas shouted, silencing everyone. "It's still WICKED. It's always been WICKED." Everyone froze on their spot and Thomas went towards his bed to pull the mattress out of it and slammed on the door to block the view from outside.
His breathing got heavy, as he leaned against it for a moment. Newt slammed his hand besides Thomas, caging from moving anymore. "Thomas!"
This pulled Thomas out of the trance, as he realized that Newt had not been calling him from his nickname for a while now. Thomas turned around, looking a little hurt at the observation, but Newt didn't realize that.
Newt frowned and closed the distance between him and Thomas. "What did you see?"
Their face were mere inches apart and Thomas was holding is breath. He tried, but couldn't get a word out of his mouth. His expression begged Newt to just trust him. Just trust him without any question, just like he did in the maze.
Thomas almost thought that Newt would not trust him after he remembered the conversation they have before leaving. Thomas would not blame him, all the Gladers suffered a really great deal to finally be able to reach this place. He even felt guilty for making them all run out of here, but he had no other choice.
Luckily, at that moment, Newt closed his eyes and sighed before turning around and ordered, "Alright everyone, Let's get out of here, first." He again turned back to Thomas, who finally let the out the breath he was holding, with an unreadable expression, and continued, "And save the questions for later."
Without wasting anytime, all the Gladers and Aris compiled to Newt's words and rushed out through the vents.
Right after they got out of the vents, Aris had told them that he had to get back for something. Newt wouldn't lie, he found that extremely suspicious, especially after the situation they were in. But he didn't say anything and kept on cursing that part of his heart who blindly trusted Thomas.
Minho on the other hand did voice out his suspicion, but Thomas replied, "You don't wanna know who you would be without trusting him." And that frustrated Newt even more, because he would do anything to find out just that, but still he remained calm.
They sprinted through the maze like corridors and suddenly were face to face with the doctor who was checking up on Teresa. All the color drained from their face for a second, as they thought they have been caught. But soon the alarms started going off and Minho, Newt and Thomas looked at each other, knowing that they were all thinking the same thing. 'There is no need to sneak out now that they know we are escaping.'
They were quick to threaten the doctor to take them to Teresa. But they were not thrilled when they found out that the guard, they were unlucky enough to find on their way, instead of capturing them, was shooting at them. This made all of them understand why Thomas was panicking earlier. The soldier didn't even care if by mistake he shot the doctor. These guys were seriously wicked.
The thing was, Newt and Minho had the most experience in running in the walls of the maze. And this place looked like the exact replica of the turns and paths that they took in the maze. Maybe because of this, they both were the most calm ones among their group right now. Given the fact that they also didn't know the things that made Thomas panicked. Thomas was moving on pure adrenaline rush, unlike both of them.
That was the reason Minho was calm enough to think and calculate the exact moment the guard that was shooting them, would reach that turn towards their direction. And before he could do so, Minho kicked him right in the middle, making the guard faint on the spot.
All the Gladers quickly ran towards him, everyone shocked at how Minho managed that except Newt, who was perplexed about how brutal Minho was. Newt looked at him, "Shit, Minho." but his voice was too calm for that reaction.
Thomas took the gun of the soldier from the floor and threatened the doctor to take them to Teresa.
If you asked, Newt whether he felt jealous when Thomas, very gently woke Teresa up, (in the middle of the chaos not to forget) and when he swiftly carried her up to the other the side of the window (which Newt helped him break by the way), did he feel jealous. Newt would simply lie and say that they were in rush and were escaping for their lives because of which he didn't have time to think about such minute feelings.
But Newt will admit that he forgot all those feelings when he felt the mini heart attack looking at Thomas running towards with the soldiers and Janson right behind him and the gate just about to be shut closed. It reminded him of the day Thomas had run into the maze as the walls were closing.
But just like that day, Thomas made it to him, sliding down on the floor. Newt and Minho quickly picked him off the ground. The Gladers ran towards the exit quickly, and Newt turned around to see Thomas flipping Janson off.
'He thinks he's cool.' Newt got angry and grabbed Thomas from his collar to yelled in his face, "You are not allowed to do that again!" Thomas stood speechless and let himself be pulled by Newt towards the exit.
Finally, when they reached the big wall door from where they had entered this facility, did Newt felt some relief. When it opened, they all felt the cold wind coming from the dark outside world, making a shiver run through their spine. For some unknown reason, it was comforting for Newt and also a shock.
Outside it was a sandstorm, but they still ran, hoping to lose the soldiers that came on sand rovers. Luckily, they found an old building buried under the sand and went inside.
Newt noticed that before exiting the facility, Aris and Winston carried bags on their back. That was probably why he had gone back before, to get some supplies and the card which opened the door they wee stuck in. Newt felt bad for once again letting his feeling get in the way of his judgement.
Winston had also taken a gun from the soldier they had knocked out on their way. While Minho took a bag which was lying there without looking inside: anything he could get at that moment.
Minho took out a torch which was attached to the bag he brought and looked around the place they just came in. Everything was broken or ruined, making it hard for them to recognize what this place was. "Where the hell are we?"
Thomas still not out of the adrenaline urged, "We gotta go."
"No." Teresa muttered and then raised her voice. "Thomas, stop! Tell me what is going on." She demanded, as she had even much less of an idea about why they all ran from the facility.
It looked like Thomas had finally calmed down. "It's WICKED. They lied to us. We never escaped." His voice started trembling, "Me and Aris, we found bodies. Too many to count."
"What do you mean?" Minho asked. "Dead bodies?"
'Was he right? Were the bodies he saw earlier really dead?' Newt and Minho thought the same.
"No, but they weren't alive either. They had them strung up. With tubes coming out of them. They were being drained. There's something inside of us that WICKED wants. Something in our blood. So we have to get as far away from them as possible." Thomas looked at Newt, as if hoping for him to say something, but at that same moment Newt looked down at his wrist, which he usually wrapped with a cloth. He frowned for a moment thinking of something but then quickly disregarded his thought and looked back at Thomas.
Newt sighed. He really shouldn't be like this in this situation, but he can't help but still be a little mad at Thomas. Maybe Minho sensed it because he signaled Newt to, 'calm down and act wisely just like you always does'.
Newt nodded, telling Minho that he understands, and does the complete opposite. "Okay. So what's the plan?"
Minho looked at him as if he can't believe Newt is trying to be a shit right now. He then sympathetically looked at Thomas, who was looking lost.
"You do have a plan, right?" Newt asked.
"Yeah" Thomas said just for the sake of saying something and tried to run his brain through any plans he could come up with.
"Well, we followed you out here, Thomas, and now you're saying that you have no idea where we're going or what we're doing." Newt walked towards Thomas as he said so.
Even Minho was surprised at his outburst. He thought Newt was just teasing Thomas. 'Is he really that mad at Thomas?' Minho thought backing off a little, not wanting to get between both of them.
Newt looked around, running his hands thought his hair in frustration, a little because of Thomas's silence and a lot because of his own pettiness. 'What am I even mad at?' He thought. 'That he helped us escape those people? That he ran away with Aris?' Then an image of Thomas carrying Teresa in his arms right after she had woken up came to his mind. Newt huffed, 'Am I really that petty?'
"Wait." Aris suddenly said. "Janson said something about people hiding in the mountains. Some kind of resistance or army."
"The Right Arm." Thomas replied after forcing the wheels of his brain to work. "The Right Arm. If they're really against WICKED, maybe they can help us."
For some reason, Minho wasn't thrilled to know that there are people here outside. He didn't want to meet any people after what they had been through.
"People." Newt looked completely fed up. "In the mountains. Mountain people. That's your plan?" The way Newt said it, really makes it sound stupid.
"It's the only chance we have." Thomas muttered.
"Hey, guys." Winston called, distracting them from their conversation. "Check this out. Minho, give me a light!"
Minho took his torch to where Winston had been crouched down on the land, and saw footprints. "Someone's been down here." He followed the footprints and found a glass shutter. "Come on." Minho asked the others. "Open up."
They all pushed the shutter open and went inside. There were mountains of random things and clothes inside. Minho went towards a pile of clothes and took a jacket.
"Looks like people lived here." Winston said.
"Where are they now?" Newt asked moving the torchlight around, which he just found.
"Let's pack some of this stuff up." Thomas also took a jacket and wore it while Newt put the light on him to help him. "Anything you think you might need. We'll split up, see what else we can find. Meet back here."
Thomas began to move when Newt stopped him. "Wait, Thomas." He threw another torch he just found at Thomas as a silent apology for yelling at him earlier.
Thomas nodded at him, but was miserable. "Let's go." He said and went with Minho. He thought he was just imagining things, but right now it was confirmed. 'Newt's mad at me. Really mad at me.' He came to that conclusion when we heard Newt call him 'Thomas' instead of his usual nickname.
Thomas was so dejected that he didn't even hear what Minho was saying to him.
"Hey," Minho called again. "Do you hear me?"
"Yeah," Thomas replied reflexively, "I hear you."
For thirty minutes or so, everything was fine. All of them explored around and found so many useful things. When, suddenly, the whole place light up. Newt looked around and found that only Thomas and Minho were not there. 'This was probably their doing.'
Each of them, Newt, Teresa, Aris, Frypan, Winston and Jake had gotten a bag pack in which they stuffed all the important things they found. Suddenly, a strange sound started ringing around. The sound was like an animal screeching and gagging on something.
"What the shuck was that?" Winston asked.
"I don't know." Frypan said and looked around.
Newt was also looking around to find out where the voices were coming from and what was happening when he heard Thomas yell, "Hey!" All of their heads turned towards his voice to see the most bizarre image.
Minho and Thomas were running towards them. "Hey!"
There were people behind them. "Run!"
Upon a close look, Newt saw that they were not people. "Oh shit."
They were cranks, the worst thing they could have found.
Newt quickly strapped on his bag, getting ready to run. "Everybody move! Run!"
