Feeling Alone – Part 3 (Final)

"I don't know, Ben. But I do know at nearly 50 she should consider slowing down." Miranda almost rolled her eyes at how long Andy had been a firefighter.

"Oh, come on now. You know Andy wouldn't slow down until she was forced to."

"I know. That's what worries me. It isn't just her that she needs to worry about."

It was an hour later when Pru, Bailey and Ben were settled in Andy's room. Pru still had tears falling down her cheeks, Bailey's arm around her, trying to comfort her.

There was a knock on the door and the three of them turned to look at who knocked, and they saw Maya and Carina.

Carina walks into the room first, letting her wife take her time, understanding how hard this was for her. Carina looked at the bed and what she saw shocked her. Andy had a bandage wrapped around her head and a cast on her right leg and a splint on her left wrist. Carina knew Andy was injured but she wasn't expecting this.

"How bad is the head injury?" Maya asked. Everyone's heads turned to her, and they saw Maya looking straight at Andy and nothing else. When no one answered Maya looked at Miranda. "Bailey, how bad is her head injury?"

"Bishop, Dr. Shepherd would be a person to explain this." Just as Miranda finished Amelia walked in.

"She's right," Amelia said. "Andy had a hard knock. She has a cut on her forehead, and the back of her head." Amelia told them. "She doesn't have any fractures, no brain bleeds, she just has a really bad concussion that I won't know the extent of until she's awake," Amelia told them.

"What about her leg and wrist?" Carina asked.

"Leg is just a regular break, Will heal in a couple of months," Miranda told her. "Wrist is only sprained."

Carina nodded and wrapped an arm around her wife. It was silent in the room for all of two seconds when the group heard footsteps rushing into the room. They looked up and saw Jack, Robert and Natasha.

"How's she doing?" Jack asked, dressed in his uniform still. Obviously coming from teaching at the academy.

"She's got a bad head injury, broken leg and sprained wrist." Miranda listed and looked down at Pru. Pru still had tears running down her cheeks silently, so she rubbed her arm.

Jack was watching Pru, and he saw how devasted she was. He wasn't sure if this would help but he walked closer to her and rested a hand on her shoulder.

"Uncle Jack," Pru said, turning around and wrapping her arms around Jack. Jack held Pru and looked over her shoulder. He looked at the bed and was heartbroken by the sight that met him. His best friend. His messy, twisted, other half. They had become closer and closer since Ryan had died and since Vic and Travis left 19 Andy had relied on him like never before. Jack held Pru as she was crying and tried to hold in his own emotions, but tears still fell. He couldn't lose Andy. He just couldn't. Andy was his sister, his other half, his "I'd-give-you-my-liver" kind of person.

After a few more minutes of hugging Pru let go.

"I'm going to go get something to eat. Haven't had anything since breakfast in the beanery this morning." Pru told them, wiping the tears off her cheeks.

"We'll come with you," Ben told her, wrapping an arm around Pru's shoulders and walking her out of the room, Miranda following leaving Jack with Robert and Natasha.

"Mind if I have a moment alone with Andy?" Jack asked, looking over at the married couple. They shook their heads and exited the room.

Jack sighed and sat down in the chair and held Andy's hand.

"Hey, Captain." Jack started. "Look, I know you're probably in a lot of pain right now, but I just need you to know that you'll have all the support in the world when you wake up." Jack rubbed the top of her hand. "Andy, so many of us need you even if we're not around at the station anymore. Please just hang on, okay? I heard we nearly lost you a few times today and I need you to hang on. Please, Herrera. I know it's selfish, but I cannot afford to lose you. You're my best friend, okay? You're my "I'd-give-you-my-liver" friend so I need you to stick around for me." Jack let a tear fall. He hated seeing Andy like this. Jack imaged that Andy felt this feeling of helplessness when he was in the hospital after the ball. Jack watched Andy for any movement, but nothing happened and a few more tears fell.

Jack was sitting in the room, alone, for another half hour before Robert and Natasha entered the room.

"Any change?" Robert asked and watched Jack shake his head. He sighed and nodded. "Have Vic and Travis been called?"

"Ben made calls to everyone. They were his first call." Jack let them know. "Their flight lands in three hours. I think."

"Has everyone else been called?" Natasha asked, looking at Andy and her heart sank. She was praying that 19's captain was going to be okay.

"Yeah. Maya and Carina should be here any minute." Just as Jack finished talking Maya and Carina walked in. Maya gasped.

"Oh, my God," Maya said, seeing her friend for the first time. Maya looked her over, starting with the head injury and then looking at her leg and wrist. "How bad is her head injury?"

"It isn't good," Amelia told her, having come into the room a few seconds ago. "We won't know what kind of damage it'll have on her until she wakes up."

Maya moved closer to the bed and tapped Jack's shoulder. Jack looked up and Maya saw the pain in his eyes clear as day. She rested her hand on his shoulder, not needing to say anything. Andy was their best friend, they didn't know what they'd do if they lost her.

"What about her arm and leg? Are they going to heal okay?" Carina asked.

"Yeah, the wrist is sprained. The leg will heal in two months." Carina nodded and watched Amelia as she checked over Andy's vitals.

"Everything okay?"

"Yeah, just came in to make sure that she's staying stable and that there aren't any changes," Amelia explained, finished checking the heart monitor and her breathing and when she was satisfied that Andy was still stable, she left the room.

It was three hours later when Robert, Maya, Carina, Ben, and Pru heard running in the hall. They looked up and saw Vic and Travis.

"Hughes, Montgomery, thank god you're here," Ben said with a small smile on his face. He had missed them.

"Of course, we're always going to be here when you call," Travis said while Vic was focused on Andy.

Vic's heart sank when she saw the state her friend was in.

"How serious is the head injury?"

"Dr. Shepherd has said that we won't know the extent of the injury until she wakes up," Maya said, walking over to Vic and giving her a hug. "I missed you so much."

"I missed you too, girl," Vic said, squeezing Maya gently before letting go.

"Aunt Vic," Pru said, walking over to Vic and pulling her into a hug.

"Hi, Pru," Vic said and pulled back. She looked into Vic's eyes and her heart began to hurt when she saw the pain in her eyes. "It's going to be okay. She's going to be okay." Vic said, hands on Pru's shoulders and looking her in the eye.

Pru nodded and Vic pulled her into her again, wanting to comfort Pru as best she could.

"Mind if I have a moment with Andy alone?" Vic asked, looking around the room at everyone after Pru stepped out of her embrace. She watched everyone nod and slowly walked out of the room, each glancing at Andy before they left.

When Vic was sure everyone had left, she went to the door and closed it, not wanting anyone to hear what she had to say.

"Hi, Andy." Vic started as she grabbed Andy's hand. "I know we haven't talked in a few weeks because of how busy I've been but I'm here, okay? I'm here." Vic let a tear fall. "I know I haven't been around in a while, I know we've only talked on the phone the last six months but it's because we've been talking about returning to Seattle for good. Travis and I, I mean." Vic sighed. "Look, I did some good work in DC, but Seattle has always been my home and I miss being here. I've been so homesick the last few years and I wanted to come back, but I knew I couldn't just leave the Hudon foundation to fend for themselves so I was working on a plan with them when Ben called to tell us about you getting injured." Vic ran a hand through her hair. "I'm sorry I haven't been in touch much, Andy. I wish I didn't get so wrapped up in myself and my new life in DC, but it was just so exciting being in a new place. I need you to be okay. Got it? I need my sister to be alive and I'll be here for you while you recover. I won't leave you again. I'll be here throughout your recovery and through any challenges that may arise." Vic paused, she looked at Andy's head and thought back to how she was in the same position that Jack was 14 years ago and her eyes teared up. That injury meant Jack no longer being an active firefighter and she hoped that Andy didn't have the same fate. "I'm here for you no matter what happens, okay? We're 19. Family forever." Vic didn't know what else to say so she just looked down when she felt her hand being squeezed. "Andy?"

Vic watched Andy's face and waited for Andy to open her eyes or mouth or just anything to show that she was with her. Vic was overjoyed when she saw Andy's eyes flutter open moments later. She was about to speak when Andy smiled and then opened her mouth.

"Family forever."
