Chapter 21

General POV

Never had he been here, not in this part of the world. The sand beneath his feet felt grainy and too dry. The air felt crisp and soothing, yet he did not seek comfort from the warm embrace of the desert wind, he felt danger. He felt danger enveloping him, and his surroundings in its ominous tight embrace.
Years he had lived, so many and yet nothing impacted him as great as this. With one look up into the starry night sky and one step forward, he had reached the Morganville town limit. He was here, in captivity. Away from the clueless world and into a new one with just one step. His feet once again hit concrete making the familiar tapping sound, a comfort, a reminder of the place he called home. The road was long and deserted and not a single light shone. The darkness was not a problem though; he is a vampire after all.

Shane's POV

I don't remember how I got back here, home. Not much of a home any more, Claire is dead, Michaels dead and me who is dead inside. Nothing held appeal, no life. I scanned the room looking for nothing in particular when I saw Claire's crossbow laid beside the bookcase. Memories of that crossbow and the chaos it had survived came rushing in with Claire the one behind it. The first time she fired an arrow was when I saw the true fighter she was, someone with inner strength, determination and a true heart. Someone I fell in love with, she was mine.
I didn't notice the front door opening, until a girl dressed all in black from head to toe was stood in front of me. Eve.
"
Hey asshole! You didn't think to tell me my husband is DEAD?" Eve screamed In absolute disbelief. I had been so wrapped up in my own world I had completely forgotten to tell her.
"I'm sorry" was all I said, I couldn't think of anything else to say. Nothing to make this situation we were in any better. No words could heal our wounds. We have lost everything. Forever the optimist.
"Sorry?! Is that it? Really, sorry is all you have got? Wow Shane, what happened to you?"
"What happened to me?! I have just lost my fucking girlfriend and you're asking what has happened to me? You might want to ask yourself the same thing, unless Michael meant nothing to you" the last few words leaked from my mouth with a sudden pang of regret, with Eve's slap following. Her eyes were filled with horror.
"Don't you ever say that! You know I love him"
"Loved Eve, he's gone" I grabbed hold of her shoulders and shook hard. "He's gone and he isn't coming back" I shouted at the top of my lungs, as realisation suddenly sunk in.
"Maybe he's gone, and Claire too. But we can try and save them. I have a way" Her eyes were pleading for me to understand, but I shook my head and walked away.
"How the hell are we gonna do that?" I asked without much interest, I lost it at the beginning of the conversation.
"Myrnin"

General POV

He stopped moving, he had reached a crossroad, four different ways to go, forward, left or right, or straight back home. The decision tested him, tested his ability to believe he was right to be here. He contemplated each direction, and he took one step forward, and there was no going back. He held onto the satchel that kept a familiar weight on his right shoulder and carried on moving forward. He stepped onto the side-walk and walked a slow pace, taking in all his surroundings. Street-lights were spaced out; lights off in homes, curtains drawn and silence loomed all around. He could sense people watching him from their homes, wondering what a stranger, a man on his lonesome was doing walking down the street at such a late hour, and he was wondering the same. Human eyes were not the only ones watching, vampires were too. Pressure was pressing down on him like a weight, and he felt as though he was being crushed. He had shown no threat, yet people were scared. Scared he was a danger, which in many ways he could be. But that is not his mission; his mission is far from that, it is still unclear to him.

He knew where to go, but not so much what awaited him, he would open that door when he came to it, and what lay behind it he was not sure, but he would soon find out.

Myrnin's POV

Books, books and more books are being thrown everywhere, nothing of what I need, and nothing of any meaning. Nothing that can save Claire; and Michael of course. Nothing. I picked up a stained piece of papyrus edged into the corner of a forgotten diary and unfolded the fragile material hoping to find something related to saving her, but nothing was on the material but mad sketching's of numbers and doodles. I roared with rage and threw the last lab table that remained standing all the way across the room. It did not calm my anger, it made me thirsty and my blood lust raged over spilling the last bit of sanity that left me hanging onto reality and I ran, ran out of the lab faster than my legs were willing to take me and into the night.
I ran around the streets my senses latching onto anything with a pulse. There was no one walking the streets with a heartbeat, and that is when Claire was with me again, she stood before me under the awning of an oak tree in founders square. She looked ethereal but more faded now, washed out. Her skin was a pale white, hardly visible in the dark, but just visible enough to see the worry in her eyes and the concern in her expression.
"Myrnin, you have to stop. You know this is not the way. Visit the blood bank, do not kill for your advantage. You have a conscience, don't do something you will regret" I walk towards her slowly wanting to reach out for her, touch her skin and ignite the fire within me. But she stepped backwards fading away. I reached out and took hold of her hand and wept louder than I thought was possible and brought her lips to mine. Our lips crushed together sparks electrifying our bodies, light exploding from our hands and into the air. Her body fit mine like a puzzle, my missing piece, my other half. I craved this, and I wanted it for all eternity. Claire's body took on more substance and felt human again; I used it to my advantage and pressed her up against the tree with all my might as a cute giggle escaped from Claire. I did not want to let go and neither did she, we grabbed on tighter the kiss becoming more forceful, passion radiating between us. I placed gentle kisses along her jawline and laughed into the crook of her neck as her hands intertwined in my hair and pulled me back up to meet her eyes before her lips latched onto mine once again. A growl ran through me and into her mouth and then she was gone. I was stood there alone in my own company. I looked like the Cheshire cat a smile to wide lining my face, I knew she was safe again. I had more time.

General POV

He adjusted the satchel on his shoulder as he drew a blood bag from its pocket. It was beginning to clot, and he needed it just now, he was becoming un-nerved, afraid of any passers-by and their intentions. He needed his strength and this was his only way to get it. He tore away the corner of the plastic film and placed it to his lips, sighing quietly before the blood entered his mouth. He needed the blood more than he had expected, his fangs stayed descended for quite some time, his eyes still red. Maybe that was a good thing, he could ward of danger. He was not used to civilisation as it were these days, he had been in hiding for so long, and he had lost all courage and hope of becoming a somebody again.
One last turn and he was on the right path. He reached the cul-de-sac almost immediately and paused assessing each house. To his right were four small houses, one of them abandoned and looking out of place, something he could familiarise with all too well. And to his left were 5 houses all occupied and one had Gothic qualities, something was so powerful about the way it looked, almost as if it contained some kind of power. Waves hit his skin causing pimples to arise on his arms. Confusion struck him like a bolt of lightning and he stumbled backwards. His lungs opened and he took one breath before releasing it into the night air and he was composed again. He shook his head with bafflement and began walking once again, he could question such a strange happening later.

The alley was dark and thin, something one could imagine as a throat. Claustrophobic is the most suitable word. He began at a slow pace to walk down the alley, unknown to the threat on the other side. As he reached the end, there was a shack, not much of one at that. The door was wide open, no light on the other side as far as he could tell from this standing point, but he entered anyway knowing there was no going back now.
As he descended the stairs what lay before him was not what he expected, a laboratory or what was left of it was an absolute disaster. Books lay everywhere ripped or dismantled. Glass was broken on desks and left resting against the walls. Lab tables broken and strewn all over the place. Nothing was in its full shape, except for a picture that lay on the floor at the bottom of the steps. One of a girl, with big brown eyes gold dancing in her irises, chocolate brown flowing hair to her shoulders and a bright beautiful smile as blinding as the sun. A name was written in the corner of the picture 'Claire'.

Myrnin's POV

I head home after leaving the blood bank. I am practically skipping, if I had a heart it would be skipping too. My head was buzzing and I felt as though I was floating. I could feel light spilling from my fingers. I am happy. I am sated. I am in love.
I pass the streets in a blur and think of Claire all the way, think of her in my arms and think of her as mine. I suddenly reach my alley and begin to walk when I smell an unfamiliar scent leering. My fangs descend and my vision turns red, ready for anything or anyone. I take my time, and as I reach the end of the alley I swing open the shack door and plummet down the stairs in a rush to find a man, not much taller than me standing in my lab. He was not facing me, but he knew I was here. He wore old fitting clothes, a black jacket that reached his knees with intricate embroidery sewn immaculately onto the sleeves and the shoulders. Black breeches tucked into dark brown leather boots and a dark green satchel hanging loosely on his right shoulder. Something I may have in my own wardrobe, something I could see myself wearing, not that fashion is all that important right now when an intruder is in my home. His shoulders tense slightly as he takes a deep breath before turning around saying my name whilst doing so, "Myrnin".
I gasped in utter shock, his voice being just as I had remembered, dark and smoky with an undertone of calm. I took one step forward speaking his name for the first time in hundreds of years,
"Gwion".
