Chapter Eighty Three
**Obi-Wan's Point of view**
While Anakin was trying to catch Bane and save a child in danger, I stayed in the Temple. Meagan was still helping with some relief efforts on a planet that desperately needed it. Though neither of us had an abundance of time, we had talked the other night, catching up on events of late. She did say she thought it would be several more days to a week before she would be able to leave. I would have preferred having my wife home while I was, but her compassion for others was something this galaxy desperately needed at the moment and she was well protected with my troops.
Of course motoring battles and the entire situation with the holocron kept me busy and preoccupied, not to mention taking care of Sasha. It felt so good to have something so normal to focus on, something to remind me why I was doing this. I was learning to cherish the times I was able to spend with her because when I left, I never knew when I would be able to return. Sasha seemed to think the same as several nights she ended up crawling into bed with me. Instead of taking her back to her own room, like I normally would do, I tucked her closer in. Watching her sleep I often wondered why I wasn't taking her back to her own bed, being the fact this wasn't a good habit for her to develop, but for some reason I felt more comfortable with her curled up beside me.
"Daddy?" Sasha's small voice broke me out of a light sleep one morning.
Opening my eyes, I found us nose to nose, a pair of identical eyes staring into mine. "Yes Sasha?"
"I'm hungry."
"Okay, I'm up." I glanced at the clock and found it was about the time we normally did start rising. "Let's get breakfast."
She climbed off my lap and quickly dashed from the room. Smiling and wondering where she got so much energy this early, I followed her at a more sedate pace.
After eating, we got dressed and ready to go for the day. We walked down the Temple corridors hand in hand, enjoying the morning sun shining through the windows. We arrived at the crèche wing and she dashed through the door, squealing when she saw her clan. I felt my heart sink, no hug or goodbye daddy. She was still so young. Sighing, realizing, even now I have to learn to let her go, I turned and left.
The day never got any better with Jedi reporting back in. Bane had taken another child. It was only the following day when Anakin reported back, with good news and bad news. The good news was the Gungan child had been saved, left in the loving care of his parents. The bad news, Bane had escaped again. We had no clue to his whereabouts, where the children were taken to or his next location or what job he might have lined up, and especially no idea where the holocron was or even if he still had it. The Masters wondered and theorized if this was over but I had a feeling it wasn't.
**Undisclosed location; third person**
A bounty hunter sat in his underground apartment and activated his visual comlink as it began to blink. A dark hooded figure appeared in front of him.
"I took the two children to Mustafar as you requested." Bane updated the other man. "One the Jedi took but I managed to escape."
"Two will do adequately." The hooded figure didn't seem too angry especially as a dark gleam came over his face. "I have another job for you."
"I'm listening." Came the nearly instant reply.
"I do want another child, not one from the holocron."
Bane listened to the detailed description of the job and thought for long moments before answering. "You're price just doubled from the triple rate from the first job. It won't be easy."
"Can you do it?"
Another long pause. "Yes."
"Good." The hooded figure was very pleased.
"Should I deliver it to Mustafar with the other children?"
"No." The image answered. "Bring the child to me."
With that the transmission cut off, leaving the bounty hunter in silence, contemplating his next move.
**Obi-Wan's point of view**
Days passed as we waited and waited. No news on Bane, no reports on the children and no new children had been reported kidnapped. The other Masters felt that the holocron and the children were a huge loss to the Jedi, the Republic and the war, but they didn't feel anything else amiss. Cade Bane had simply done the job he was hired to do, moved on to whatever was next and there was little we could do now. But I felt different. Something didn't sit right though I had no idea why or what it meant. It was beyond frustrating. Master Yoda said I should meditate more on letting it go, but for the first time I couldn't.
"Daddy, let go." Sasha managed as I was hugging her goodbye one morning. "I hafta go."
"I am sorry." I immediately loosened my grip, setting her own her feet. "I will pick you up before third meal."
"Bye daddy." With that she dashed off to her friends.
I watched her go, almost calling her back. I had to fight the urge to keep her in my sight. What was going on? Did a case of child kidnapping bring out every paternal protective instinct I had? Of course keeping her with me was completely out of the question especially since I was nearly late to the Council meeting.
Though I had to nearly force myself down the hallway, every step away from her seeming wrong. Taking a deep breath I somehow forced those thoughts clear from my mind.
But they didn't stay away. After the Council adjourned, several of us with some others, met in the war rooms, discussing troop movements, battle plans, etc and I kept forcing myself to pay attention, to follow along, my mind going to my young daughter. I couldn't get her out of my mind.
"Master are you alright?" Anakin asked me as we went to go get lunch, looking quite concerned. "You don't seem like yourself today."
"I'm fine Anakin." I tried to assure him, but he didn't buy it as he continued on.
"It's Bane kidnapping those children. It's still bothering you isn't it?"
No use in denying it anymore. "Yes and I don't know why. It's illogical I know but I don't think this is over with and I also don't like having Sasha out of my sight either." I sighed in frustration. "I've tried meditating but it doesn't help. It's like every protective paternal instinct went into overdrive when Bane took those children and just won't go away."
Anakin watched me for a moment or two. "We just saw Sasha. She's fine."
She, with her masters and the rest of the clans, had just left the lunch room and I, walking in, had to clinch my fists to resist the urge to snatch and hide her away. "I know. Logically I know this is ridiculous but there is something causing this, more than what's happened. I know there is no evidence to this either."
Anakin was now looking at me like I'd gone insane. "When is Meagan getting back again?"
"What has that got to do with this?"
"Well maybe she can settle this down since Jedi wisdom or meditation isn't working."
"What if I'm right?" I couldn't help but ask him.
"Hopefully it won't come to that, but I'm sure once this gets further behind us, or Bane shows his face somewhere else on another job, it will go away."
Of course it sounded right, but didn't feel so right. I decided to not continue a discussion that wouldn't help me anymore. I quickly changed the subject. "Are you busy this afternoon with any meetings or training?"
Anakin raised an eyebrow, wondering about the sudden change in subject.
"How about a spar? It might help clear my mind."
"Of course." A grin split his features as we rose from the table and headed toward the gyms. We battled against each other for quite some time, it proving to distract my thoughts at least a little bit, but the urge to find and keep my daughter safe was still not going away. As one duel came to an end, I decided that, even if it was insane, I was going to at least check on her.
"Master?"
"I know this is crazy." I told him, it sounded crazy to me too. "I have to go check on Sasha."
Anakin sighed, looking at me like I was losing my mind. "Do you want me to come with you?"
"I'm just going to poke my head into the gardens." I told him. "They are usually playing there this time of the day. I shouldn't be too long."
"Alright." He didn't look like he believed me and didn't seem to want to leave me alone either especially in my frame of mine. "I'll come over for dinner tonight."
I had the feeling he didn't think Sasha should be alone with me and I turned to go, nearly calling over my shoulder. "That's fine."
Hurrying through the corridors, I couldn't explain why, I just felt this pressing need to see her, to keep her safe. "After this, I think I'm going to need my head examined." I spoke into the quiet to the elevator that would take me to the levels of the gardens.
Once the doors opened, finding an empty hallway, I sprinted down, just needing to get there. Anxiety filled me as I entered the room to find the fog had settled in, like someone had messed with the environmental controls, to where it was hard to see.
"Obi-Wan." I heard more than saw Bant guiding several young ones toward the exit. "Something's gone wrong. One moment it was completely normal and now it's like this."
"Where's Sasha?" I didn't sense her close by.
"She was over on the other side." Bant said, motioned toward the lake. "I've called maintenance but I can't get through."
I searched through the thickened fog, the feeling of dread settling into me and I reacted purely on instinct. "Call the Masters. Bane's here."
She didn't question me, though it was in her eyes, but once she began pulling out her comlink, I took off into the mist.
Stretching out into the Force, I felt around for my daughter. Fear suddenly spiked along our connection and my worst fears had come to life as her voice echoed through it. "Daddy!"
It was a cry for help. Bane had found her and I had only a clue of to where he was taking her. Was his job to take her or kill her? There were plenty of places to either sneak out through the water lanes, if he had shut them down. Then in a garden filled with water, he could easily drown her.
"Daddy." She called me again.
"Where are you?" I sent her, trying to follow her fear but I wanted to get ahead of Bane, not chasing him to where he would get away, taking my daughter. "Be brave." Keeping our bond open, I soon discovered which escape route he was using. Quickly changing direction, I ran toward an intercept course. "Good girl."
Knowing the gardens well and using the Force, I was able to get close to them rather quickly. I could hear them before I could see them. Sasha certainly wasn't going easily, more than likely kicking him and making a lot of noise.
"Shut up you brat." I heard him curse.
"Let me go." I heard Sasha's response. "My daddy's going to get you."
"I wouldn't be so sure of that."
I dropped down from the rock I was hiding above. "Are you so sure about that?"
"One wrong move and she gets it." Bane threatened, holding a blaster to her head. I noticed he was not wearing his normal clothes but a jumpsuit that looked like it came from one of our non Jedi workers.
"Daddy?" I could tell she was still scared, but seemed to pull herself together, enough where I knew I could act.
"Get ready." I gave her a steady look and she nodded. "Give it up Bane. It's over. We know your plan."
"Like you are going to win when I hold all the cards?" He started laughing, obviously confident that I wouldn't try anything while he was holding my daughter. Did he think that a Jedi youngling would have no skills or talent?
Without saying a word, I dove at him, taking him completely off guard, plowing into his legs, taking all of us to the ground. Sasha, seizing the moment, bit down on the hand still holding her and began wiggling her way out of his grasp.
"Ah," Bane cried out as I reached up, trying to disarm him without hurting Sasha. "You brat."
Instead of replying, while scrambling to her feet, she kicked him the face.
"Run and hide Sasha." I commanded as I managed to get to my feet. Catching sight of her dashing off into the mist, tugging the Force around her, to hide herself, left me no hesitation. Pulling out my lightsaber, I quickly disarmed Bane as he started to rise. "The slightest movement and I will forget my Jedi vows."
Bane glared at me and looked like he was going to make me eat my words as Anakin, Masters Windu, Ki-Adi-Mundi and Yoda approached, all armed and ready.
"Bane, hands in the air and turn around." Mace Windu said motioning to Mundi and Anakin as I still held out my saber, covering them.
"Alright Jedi, you win. But I will never talk."
"We'll see about that." Windu said as Bane was handcuffed and led away. "We need to check security reports to see where he broke in again."
"He was wearing a Temple employee jumpsuit. I'm sure we will find someone is missing, maybe from the hanger crew." I added.
Master Windu nodded, pulling out his comlink to start working on it as Master Yoda turned spoke.
"Sasha, safe is she?"
"She got away." I assured them as we began to notice the fog was lifting, someone having gotten control over the environment. "I best go see where she ran off to." I headed off in the direction she had run in, stretching out with the Force, trying to get a sense of where she had hid.
"Sasha." I called out, walking a bit further on. "It's over. You're safe." I didn't hear a response but I couldn't blame her for being so cautious. "It's Daddy. You can come out now." Some moments later, I found her shaking underneath a bush. "Come here little one. He's gone. He can't hurt you."
"Oh daddy." She started crying as I reached for her, gently pulling her from her hiding space. Once free, I pulled her close, soothing her along our bond, feeling nothing but absolute relief and took much comfort of her warm small body in my arms.
"It's over, Sasha, Daddy's here." Blinking back the tears, I started placing kisses in her hair. She was safe and I was never going to doubt my paternal feelings ever again. I nearly laughed out loud, knowing I was not going crazy. Once Sasha had calmed and the fog had gone even further down, I carried her to where several of the Masters were waiting, including Master Yoda.
"Found several younglings and their master we did." Master Yoda said. "Knocked them out Bane did but alright they will be."
"I think we may finally be getting somewhere." Windu said. "Once Mundi gets back, the Council should discuss our options of finding out where the other children are and the holocron."
Master Yoda glanced up at Sasha, concern for her in his eyes. "Said anything yet as she?"
I shook my head as Sasha's arms tightened around my neck. "Master, she's been through enough."
"I know." Master Yoda looked to be contemplated this. "Keep her with you we will allow."
Knowing I didn't have a choice, I followed the Masters from the room.
Once we had all taken our seats, with Sasha standing in front of us, we tried to get her to talk about what happened, but she didn't say too much. After some moments, with her looking at me pleadingly, I glanced over to Master Yoda who knew what I was asking and nodded his approval.
"Come here Sasha." I held out an arm and she took no time to sprint straight to me, literally throwing herself into my lap. "It's okay." I pulled her slightly away, sitting her on my knee, but was rubbing her back in small circles. "Can you tell me what happened?"
She shook her head. "I'm scared."
"I know you are, but we need to know what happened." I said as Master Yoda got off his chair and came to stand in front of her.
"Help you we can." He told her as we kept her attention focused on us, making it a bit easier for her to calm down.
Then finally when we asked her some questions about what happened she answered them. Though she said he didn't say much, except he didn't want to kill her.
"Felt something you must have." Master Yoda said, breaking into my concentration of wanting to tear Bane apart for hurting my baby girl.
Sasha glanced up to me, as if asking for my permission, certainly forcing my attention to her.
"Anything might help us. There are no wrong answers." I told her honestly.
She thought about that for a moment before speaking. "He felt bad."
"How so?"
I continually rubbed her back as she thought back, and I felt quite proud of her for being so brave. "Was doing wrong he was."
"Taking babies, never is right." Master Yoda agreed as I could feel the slight amusement of the Masters on how she answered his question. "Felt something else you did."
I could feel something too as I looked down to her. "It's okay, Sasha you can tell us."
"It was dark." She said slowly, as if putting her thoughts together. "He wanted to take me somewhere, somewhere dark." I could feel her small body shaking, remembering the feeling. "very dark." Though the word Sith seemed to hang in the air without being said. They were still after Sasha, that they would do anything to get her. It could be the only dark Sasha had sensed.
"Safe in the Temple you are." Master Yoda said, as we helped her to release her emotions into the Force, to where she stopped shaking. "Done well you have. "
As he turned back to his chair, knowing the questions were over, Sasha immediately scooted further back into my lap, burying her head into my chest. Not being able to resist, I allowed it and cuddled her close. A moment or so later I glanced up to the other Masters to find them watching us.
"This could be the break we are looking for." Master Saesee Tiin spoke, changing everyone's attentions. "It's quite possible, if the Sith did hire Bane, he could lead us to them. That might help us put an end to this war."
"And get the children and holocron back as well." Master Adi Galliar added.
"That is, if Bane will corporate with us." Which I wondered if he would do.
"Anakin is interrogating him as we speak, so hopefully we will get some answers soon." Master Windu turned to me and was about to say something when his comlink went off. "Show him in."
A moment or so later, Anakin walked in, trying not to look too frustrated. "Cade Bane is a much better bounty hunter than we give him credit for. He refused to say a word. It's going to be hard to get him to talk."
Well that sapped the good news we were just counting on as a break in the case.
"Let's give him some time to think about it." Master Windu put in. "On another subject, I have Master Fisto investigating on how Bane entered the Temple for the second time. We think he disguised himself as a hired worker and snuck in but we should know more soon. It has been a long afternoon. We can meet in the morning and discuss our options."
"Yes." Master Yoda agreed with him. "Meditate on our next step we should."
With that we all started to rise. Anakin stepped aside as I got up slowly, balancing Sasha in my arms.
"Is she okay?" Anakin asked me as we fell in step together.
"I think so." She was still clinging rather tightly to me but she did smile as Anakin made a silly face at her.
"How about some ice cream?" Anakin suggested cheerfully.
"Anakin…" I started to scold him, but Sasha interrupted me.
"Please Daddy." At her teary eyes I found I couldn't say no to her, especially now, even if it did ruin her dinner. Though I could swear as we left the Council rooms, several of the Masters were trying not to laugh.
After getting our ice cream, we headed back to our quarters, trying to distract Sasha from what had happened. After dinner Anakin went back to his own room so I could get my daughter settled down for the night. Of course that was much easier said than done. After several stories, she had drifted off only to wake up an hour later, crying. Pulling her into my arms, I rocked her gently, sending her love and comfort through our bond until she fell back into a restless sleep. I dosed off myself, Sasha in my arms. This pattern consisted through the wee hours of the morning and my daughter finally fell into a deep sleep sometime after three. Quite worn out, I tucked her into bed, stretching out next to her, falling asleep myself.
And for the quote, from the Alfred Hitchcock's famous, North by Northwest, with Cary Gant. The quote comes from the scene when they are hanging off of Mount Rushmore.
Eve Kendall: What happened with your first two marriages?
Roger Thornhill: My wives divorced me.
Eve Kendall: Why?
Roger Thornhill: They said I led a dull life
Ahsokanerd: We have pretty much decided not to include the Clone Wars movie or season one of the show. As much as we have enjoyed the movie and show, we decided not to follow it completely. We already had our own ideas and thought to use them instead and work in some of the shows whenever possible. As for Ahsoka, she will be a young teenager and won't be a part of this sequence as she will be joining us in a couple more chapters. She and Meagan have a very interesting first meeting. Thanks again for all your thoughts and we hope you enjoyed this chapter.
Sharnorasian Empire: We are glad you are still enjoying our story and hoped you liked this one as well. If you are trying to find similar stories, you might want to look at the Star Wars communities (unless you have already done so.) At least those are grouped together a bit better. If we are in the mood to read a certain kind of story, that's a place we go to a lot. Happy hunting. Thanks again.
