Chapter Eighty Nine
**Meagan's point of view***
"Mummy." I was not surprised to feel my daughter climb up onto my bed sometime before dawn, rousing me. Earlier that day I returned from my mission and after reporting in, spent the rest of it with Sasha and learned the Duchess Satine returned safely home after Obi-Wan helped save her just a few days previously.
I sighed, but knowing it was the war that was making her uneasy, causing sleepless nights, I didn't scold or send her back to her own bed. She squirmed around for a few moments before settling down. Thankfully she soon fell asleep but it took me a few minutes longer.
I was awakened again not much later when I felt Obi-Wan gently kissing my neck, my hair being pushed aside. The attention was nice for a moment but when his arm started to tug me closer, I pulled away, realizing he had no idea our daughter was in bed with us.
"What is it?" He asked, his voice low.
"I'm not sure you want our daughter to learn that yet."
"Uh?" Obi-Wan pushed himself up, peering over me to Sasha who was still sleeping. "Oh."
I gave him a small smile, as if to say I'm sorry. Before he could answer, his comlink went off, one of the masters calling the Council about a Separatist attack. Sasha stirred besides me as Obi-Wan quickly left the room. Settling back into bed, I eventually fell back asleep, again.
The next days were busy with plans for getting relief to some battle zones, Obi-Wan with battle plans or training Jerod, who would soon be knighted. However, one night, we were able to take time off our work. Padme invited us to an upscale dinning that catered to Senators, diplomats and others of such where the press was not allowed.
Padme and I were laughing as Anakin and Obi-Wan were arguing about something or another about a mission.
"Are they always like this?" Padme asked, indicating the almost petty banter the men were engaged in.
"Unfortunately." I answered her as the men stopped their bickering. "I've just learned to ignore it."
Padme smiled as the two men protested good naturally as our drinks arrived and the waiter took our order.
The dinner was very enjoyable, the food and service good, but I enjoyed the time with Obi-Wan, Anakin and Padme much more.
"It won't be long now." I said quietly watching Anakin and Padme share a dance on the small open floor.
Obi-Wan raised his eyebrow as he sipped his drink. "He hasn't mentioned anything."
I couldn't help but laugh. "He doesn't have to honey. It's pretty obvious."
He set down his drink, gazing at me thoughtfully. "What do you think about them? This isn't the best time to start something as serious as a marriage."
"She's good for him. " I slowly put my thoughts together. "She gives him something to come home for, a future to look forward to."
Obi-Wan was silent for a long moment before speaking. "They do balance each other well. They are happy together."
"Besides, adding Ahsoka and Padme to the family, you and Anakin are greatly outnumbered."
A smile twisted across my husband's face. "You would like to think that."
"You know I am right." I grinned, leaning up to kiss him gently.
He gave me another twisted smile as the song playing changed to a slower tune. He stood up, and then reached for my hand. "Would you like to share this dance with me?"
I giggled, placing my hand into his, allowing him to pull me up. "You may dear sir."
As we moved slowly around a few other couples, I spoke quietly. "It will be alright, they are meant to be, just as we are."
Obi-wan glanced over to the table where the two sat, talking quietly, smiling at each other before looking back to me. "Are you always right?"
I gave him a cheeky smile. "Of course I am."
He just shook his head, smiling slightly. Once the song ended, he led me from the floor back to the table. The rest of the night was very nice, we talked and laughed as the war did not exist, but all too soon it was time to leave.
We left the restaurant, climbing into the speeder as Anakin drove us safely home. Though I'm not sure if my husband called it safely or not. Obi-Wan and I were dropped off at the Temple before he took Padme home and we bid each other goodnight before heading inside. I started veering down to get Sasha but Obi-Wan tugged on my hand, toward the lift that would take us to our quarters.
"It's late, she will be asleep." Obi-Wan guided me onto the lift as he continued. "It would wake her up and we would never get her settled down again." Finding that hard to argue with I still searched for a reason as he tugged me against him. "Besides it would be nice to have our bed to ourselves."
As the lift was not otherwise occupied, he leaned down, his lips working around my ear, suggesting something we had not done in a while. I could not deny some time alone with my husband was much needed, especially now.
Soon Obi-Wan and Anakin with the Padawans were sent chasing after the CIS army in one sector while I was sent to another to help the victims from a recent attack from Grievous. No matter how many times I saw the destruction, I would never get used to it. I hated it, but at least I felt I was doing something good, something that helped people. Granted the reporters always seemed to be following me, but the clones that were assigned, kept them at bay.
"Lady Kenobi, your transport is waiting." One of the men came up as I was organizing some supplies. I'd been planet side for nearly the last month helping with recovery efforts. I felt like I really helped them start the recovery process but I was ready to go home, to see my daughter and hopefully my husband.
"We have a ride?" I asked, wondering which republic ship was near to pick us up.
"The Sassy is currently in orbit, having arrived recently." He said with a smile
I nodded. "I will need to get my things together and say some goodbyes."
"Yes, my lady." It was over an hour later I climbed aboard the transport, wiping my still watering eyes after telling people goodbye.
The ride was short and we were soon soaring into the massive bay of the Sassy. Not worrying about my belongings, just wanting to see Obi-Wan, I headed down the hall to the lift as the ship was already moving into open space.
I found Obi-Wan standing on the bridge as he gave the order to go to hyperspace. Once the stars went blurry, Obi-Wan motioned his head towards his office. Knowing he was talking to me, I silently followed him. Once the door slid shut behind us, it only took mere seconds for us to practically jump into each other's arms, lips finding each other.
Once we finally came back down to earth, we settled onto the small settee in the corner, catching up with each other. At some point, I dropped my head onto his shoulder just content to be with him, taking in his rather familiar masculine scent, feeling comforted by it. It felt like I was coming home.
"You're tired." He commented, his voice quiet but his eyes watching me closely.
"It's been a long month, a lot of long days." I cuddled closer to him, feeling the warmth. "But I think, given time and not another attack, they should be okay."
"Good." Obi-Wan pulled away before rising, then helped me to my feet. "Come on, let's get some rest."
I followed my husband from the room, wondering how much rest we were going to get.
Once we arrived back to the Temple, we kept busy as usual. Jerod was soon knighted and I think the moment was rather bittersweet without his master, though Obi-Wan had helped him tremendously. The war seemed bigger than ever at times, but yet hope remained it would not last and there would always be something to look forward to. This day it being a wedding. Anakin and Padme's.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I practically scolded the young man when he told me, after I squealed with delight before hugging both of them.
Both of them were absolutely thrilled. Anakin just gave me a smile. "You were on Krenecia for a month and when both Padme and I had a few days off together and it just felt right."
I decided to forgive him especially at seeing how happy both of them were, how bright everything seemed to be. Sasha was absolutely ecstatic Padme would officially be her aunt. Between Senate work and raising relief efforts, Padme and I spent some time discussing wedding plans. She would have liked a bigger wedding but with everything going on, it was deemed safer to have a small private one. Their engagement was all over the press and Obi-Wan told the couple that a large society wedding would only invite an attack.
However, in the midst of this I was sent on another mercy mission. I spent the first day tirelessly rescuing people from their nearly burned out houses, trying to reunite families, and getting them food and shelter. I had been there for only a few days when a man approached me.
"I was told you are the one in charge." He said with a smile that looked oddly familiar, but I didn't recall ever meeting him before. He introduced himself as Dalton Kain.
"At least partially. I'm Meagan Kenobi." I introduced myself before continuing on. "What can I do for you?"
"I've worked with some of the people here in the past. I was in the area and wanted to offer my help."
I stared back at him for a long moment, trying to decide about him. He looked to be in his early to mid fifties with dark hair and a discerning pair of eyes. He didn't feel bad, the Force didn't warn me of danger but yet there was something about him. "I don't know….."
"My lady, you look like you need any help you can get." He pointed out and I knew I couldn't argue with that statement.
"Very well." I finally agreed, but decided to keep a close eye on him and gave him some tasks.
Over the next few days, Kain worked right along with the people and he had known some of them before, maybe business associates or something but he didn't cause any trouble and worked hard. He even managed to scare off some reporters who came, wanting to take my picture. However, it was when some more supplies arrived, I really began to wonder who this man was.
"Here is what you wanted Kain." The other man said, who looked unkempt and stank of alcohol. Suddenly feeling very vulnerable, I took a few steps behind some crates, pulling up my hood to cover my features.
"Good." I could hear the exchange of some credits. I stayed hidden as some freight was unloaded from his ship, more unsavory looking beings that immediately made me think of pirates.
Once they were gone, Kain called out. "They are gone, you can quit hiding now."
I slowly peaked around the corner, feeling out the area with the Force, making sure it was safe before making a complete appearance. "What was that about?"
He shrugged slightly, swaggering over to the nearest crate and opening it. "Getting some much needed supplies."
"From some space pirates?" I asked, looking at some of the goods, wondering where they came from.
He shrugged, not thinking it was a big deal. "They owed me a favor and I called it in."
"Who are you?" I asked, still not quite sure about him.
"I own a shipping business as well as some stores." I raised an eyebrow, forcing him to continue. "My father was a freighter when I was a kid but he died when I was a teenager. I took over some of his routes, his contacts. Granted I admit, I've not always walked the line, got involved with people or things I shouldn't, especially when I was younger, but my business is legit. I still have contacts with some questionable parts of society, but they've come in handy."
I mulled that over, not feeling he was lying. He seemed like a decent man, but I still couldn't quite figure him out. Abruptly deciding to think about him later, I turned back to work. "Well, we best get some of the other volunteers in here to start helping sort this lot."
"Very well my lady." He said with a bit of a grin. "Guess you will sort me out later too?"
With that he sauntered off, while I stood there, thinking his sarcasm was similar to Obi-Wan's.
"Come on, Meagan, you have been working for hours." Dalton Kain came up to me one evening. "I doubt you've eaten or taken a break all day."
"I've eaten a little." I hedged, but couldn't deny it completely.
"My ship's not far, I have plenty of food."
With a sigh, I followed him to the hanger where he kept his ship, where I presume he was staying. He led me through it to a room that was obviously a small kitchen with a table and chairs.
"Have a seat." He said with a smile as he began to put something together.
"Do you live here?" I asked, looking around the room with interest.
"Sometimes, when I am working." Kain said, his voice slightly muffled as he pulled out something. "My family has a house that I call home."
"You have a family?" I asked, growing more and more curious about him.
He nodded before turning back to me, placing the food on the table. "It's not much but you won't faint from lack of substance."
It was something simple, but tasted good. And it was nice to rest for a bit. "You were saying something about your family."
He finished a bite before speaking, grinning. "You know, a wife, kids, grandchildren, pets that leave your house dirty. And you?"
"I have a husband, kids, though thankfully no pet destroying my shoes."
Kain laughed. "You don't know what you are missing, my kids had a few dogs growing up that are a part of the family or at least their offspring still are."
"So you still live together?"
"Not in the same house, but close by, for the most part. A couple of them help with the business." He said without giving much of an explanation, but it really wasn't any of my business asking for more but he added on. "Our oldest son isn't with us."
"I'm sorry." I truly meant it. "I didn't mean to pry or open old wounds."
He smiled a bit. "It's okay, I know you didn't." With that we turned back to our meal and ate in silence before going back to work.
It soon became a pattern to take a meal together here and there over the next week. I became more comfortable with Dalton Kain and felt, despite a slightly shady past, he was a good man trying to help others. He told me a few funny stories about his kids getting into trouble or when he did something stupid that made his wife mad at him.
"Now tell me." He said over breakfast one morning. "If your husband did that, would you react the same?"
"Actually, my husband is wise enough not to say that, but yes, I would."
He laughed before gazing at me. "Is the General really a good negotiator?"
I blinked at the sudden change of conversation. "Actually he is. The press and media tend to exaggerate a lot, but for the most part that is accurate."
His gaze turned softer, like he was a father comforting a hurting child. "It must be hard, with him in battles or missions even before the war."
I quickly turned my face, wanting to hide the flash of emotion from thinking of the danger he might be in or about to be in. "Yes, it is."
"I'm sorry." He said rising from his chair, gathering his dishes together. "Now, I am the one that is prying."
"You are not the first or the last to do so." I too stood up, gathering more dishes as well as the leftover food. "It's alright."
We spent the next several minutes in silence, cleaning up the meal. As I putting something away, I caught sight of a picture attached to the wall. "Is that one of the dogs?"
Kain laughed, obviously knowing to what I was referring. "Yes, one of my grandchildren drew it. She obviously doesn't have the artistic talent, at least not yet, but I love it anyway."
"I have several of those myself." I added, recognizing the scrawls of a toddler just learning.
"I guess we'd better get started on work." He said putting the last of the dishes away.
"Do you mind if I use your refresher first?" I asked.
"Not at all. I have to check on something first, so I'll meet you outside." He gave me directions and I headed down the hall. I soon found it, but accidently took a wrong turn, trying to get back out.
"Now, which way?" I asked myself as I probably made another wrong turn and a door on my right side slid open. I stepped through it, not sure where this went but yet felt I had to go this way. It was actually a small room, like a sort of work room. I turned to head back out, but my eyes caught sight of a clipping of a picture, a picture of my husband.
My stomach turning, wondering if I should just run, but my curiosity suddenly screamed at me to see what it was. There upon the table were several clippings of the work both my husband and I had been doing during the war. My stomach was now quickly becoming sick. I flipped through a book that was lying there, finding all sorts of things about us, even before the war. Who was this man?
I had felt all along there was something about Dalton Kain, but he was nice and helpful and I eventually ignored it. I should have listened to my first instinct.
"Meagan?" I heard Kane calling for me and my stomach turned violently. He must have realized I hadn't left the ship. Maybe there was still time for me to get to safety, I didn't think he would try something in an area full of people.
I hurried out the door but only made it a few steps before he caught up to me.
"You got …" His voice trailed off as he realized where I came from and deduced from the look on my face what occurred. "Meagan, it's not what you think."
"Not what I think?" I yanked his hand from my shoulder, wanting nothing more to do with him. "What are doing with all those pictures, you came here just to follow me, to sell a story. You are some kind of sicko or worse a stalker….."
"Please, let me explain." Kane said as he grabbed my shoulders.
"No." I reacted instantly and kicked his shin, hard. "You are sick, I should have you arrested."
It was enough for him to let go as he took a step back, panting slightly. "I'm Obi-Wan's father."
I was about to run but his words stopped me cold and I stared at him in shock. "What did you say?"
He straightened up and seemed to be breathing more normally and a small smile curved across his face in an eerily familiar fashion. "Obi-Wan Kenobi is my son."
My first reaction of utter disbelief came out fast. "You're lying. You don't even have the same surname."
He shrugged slightly. "He has his mother's."
I still didn't know what to think. What kind of odd coincidence was this? Or was he someone out to get me and my family? Could I trust him? But yet the Force was not warning me of danger and he didn't feel like he was lying, like I was led to that room. I needed proof. "Prove it."
"Fair enough. " Kain grinned and my stomach flopped, I knew that grin. He turned, headed back into the room and a moment later came out, holding a small picture in his hands. He immediately handed it to me. "I think you might recognize the baby, especially in the eyes."
I turned my attention to the baby the man was holding, though the man was a younger version of Dalton Kain. The baby was about five to six months old and smiling, almost giggling at the camera. My breath caught in my throat. In that little face I not only saw the odd blue gray eyes of my husband but the smile of my daughter.
"If you don't believe the picture, he does have a birth mark on his right butt cheek, the shape of a half moon." He grinned again, pointing to very near the spot where it was on my husband. "Only a parent or wife would know that."
I had to agree. It wasn't something Obi-Wan shared with others, I just happened to notice it sometime. I didn't think it was something he could have learned on his own or guessed correctly at. Which only left the fact he was telling the truth, Dalton Kain was Obi-Wan's father. I suddenly felt overwhelmed. I never would have guessed, in this large galaxy, in the midst of a war, that I would meet my father in law.
"I think I need some time." I finally found my voice long moments later and handed his picture back to him.
"Of course." He said, graciously showing me the way out.
I worked that day in nearly a daze, still finding this quite unbelievable but yet the man himself reminded me of Obi-Wan. The cocky smile, the way loose strands of hair fell over his forehead, maybe the shape of his nose. Though the birthmark was a hard point to argue, I wanted solid proof, especially before telling Obi-Wan. Sighing, I knew I would have to check the Jedi records to know for sure.
AN:
StarWarsFanatic43: We are glad you have loved our story. That's always nice to hear! We hope you get a kick out of this chapter! Thanks again.
Draggu: Thanks for staying with us for such a long time. Yeah, we did stop writing for a while but came back to it. Glad you are still enjoying it! Meagan and Sasha have been fun characters to get inside of and see what we can do with canon characters as well. Thanks again.
Lillie-wan Kenobi: We are glad you have liked our story so far. It's okay if you haven't read it all, it is quite long especially with both parts put together. We are happy you found us. Hope you enjoyed this chapter.
Sharnorasian Empire: It's good to hear from you again, but it's understandable that real life gets in the way sometimes. Anyway, as for Meagan, I believe as she has become such a part of the star wars world and been away from Earth for years now, she has forgotten the stories and in the first part the council didn't want to hear what she knew. Also, she didn't see epi III, so there are some aspects she didn't know. I hope that answers your question. Thanks again and hope you enjoyed the chapter!
SueClover: Yeah, Obi-Wan was being an idiot through some of the early chapters. However, he has come a long way in learning how to handle his relationships! We hope you keep reading and enjoy the rest of the story.
And now for the quote. This one is from Charmed and fits nicely with the chapter.
Paige: You! Oh my god. You're sick! What is wrong with you?
Chris: No...
Paige: You're disgusting! You're some creepy registered sex offender from the future! Oh my god you're so gross!
Chris: I'm Piper and Leo's son!
Paige: WHAT?
Chris: They're my parents. I came back to save my family
Paige: You're serious...
