Worth Almost Getting Eaten For
Ala Moana mall
As they wandered through the racks of the children's clothing section, Angie's eyes lit up at the sight of a bright pink sundress with a sparkly unicorn on it. "Ohh, can I try this on,too, Aunt Carrie?" she asked with a huge grin.
"Of course, gorgeous. Add it to the pile."
Catherine chuckled at her daughter's excitement when she added the sundress to the clothes her godmother was holding. "You have a lot to try on, let's go to the fitting room and see which ones you like for now," she said.
At the fitting room, Carrie hung the clothing choices on the low racks that were kid-height. "Do you want help from me or Mommy, or do you want us to wait outside the curtain?"
When the almost seven year old answered, "I can do it. Then I can surprise you with the clothes!" Carrie turned to Catherine and said, "Wasn't I just buying her onesies last week?" before they took seats on a bench near the three way mirror.
Angie kicked off her flip flops and closed the curtain with a dress already in hand, her bare feet pitter-pattering against the tile floor. The sound of material rustled as she tried on the first outfit.
A triumphant squeal was followed by Angie's, "Ta-da!" when she pulled back the curtain. "How do I look in this one?"
Catherine smiled as she caught sight of her daughter twirling in the unicorn dress, her face beaming with delight. "You look magical, baby girl."
"Definitely like a real-life princess." Carrie clapped. "Better watch out, Ariel and Moana, there's another princess on Oahu."
After trying on several more dresses and shorts sets, Angie popped out of the cubicle. The salesperson manning the area chuckled at the adorable, vivacious little girl. "That dress is perfect for a beach party, sweetheart. You'll be the belle of the ball."
All smiles, Angie's eyes landed on the fiftyish woman. "Do you have any clothes with goats on them, Ms. Heidi?"
Carrie barked a laugh as Catherine shook her head, thinking, 'That's my girl'.
"Goat clothes," Carrie said, pulling her into a hug and kissing the little cheek. "Don't ever change, gorgeous."
Catherine couldn't suppress her grin when Heidi said, "Angie and I are old friends, aren't we?" Turning to Carrie, she added, "She's in quite a bit with Elizabeth," before refocusing on the soon to be birthday girl. "I think we might have to look for a goat dress, honey. But you never know what we may find."
With a determined nod, Angie announced, "Let's keep looking, okay, Mommy?"
"Put your own clothes back on and we'll give Ms. Heidi the ones you really like to hold," Catherine said, "and we'll keep looking."
The three of them went back out and kept browsing through the racks, with Angie scanning each piece of clothing for her favorite animal.
Suddenly, she spotted a sundress with a farm animal pattern on it. On the front, it featured none other than her favorite animal. Her eyes lit up like fireworks on the upcoming holiday. "Mommy, Aunt Carrie, look! A goat dress! I'll try it on!"
Catherine exchanged a glance with Carrie, and the best friends chuckled at Angie's absolute joy. "Wait, wait, baby girl, that size is for older kids, you wear size small," Catherine said as she sifted through the rack for the right size and pointed out the S 6-7 to her daughter. "Here you go." She passed it into the eager little hands and Angie was off towards the fitting rooms. When she disappeared back into the changing room with the goat dress in hand, Carrie leaned in to whisper, "She always knew what she liked."
Catherine nodded with a chuckle. "From birth. Danny always said it would be genetic and…" she waved a hand towards the curtain.
Inside the cubicle, a muffled voice could be heard singing Let it Go as Angie struggled to pull the dress over her head, until a series of soft thuds resonated from behind the curtain, followed by a little groan. "I think I'm stuck!"
Catherine went in, suppressing a laugh. "Hold on, baby girl. Let me help you out." She carefully untangled Angie from the confines of the goat dress, releasing her from the material.
When she emerged, Angie was giggling, "Aunt Carrie, I almost got eaten by the goat dress!"
Carrie laughed, "Goat dress 0, Angie 1!"
Heidi approached with a knowing smile. "I knew we had an animal dress, looks like you found it. Good detective work."
Angie beamed at the praise. "Thank you! I'm going to be on the team with my daddy someday and catch all the bad guys."
Catherine smoothed her daughter's hair. "That's our girl."
"We don't have to shop any more, I definitely want this dress for my party. And I can wear my new bathing suit from Grandma to swim!"
Carrie beamed at her. "You look absolutely perfect, but you need matching shoes, because turning seven requires the whole package."
Flinging herself into her godmother's arms, she said, "Thank you for my birthday dress and shoes, too, Aunt Carrie! I can't wait for my party. It's going to be the best day ever!"
As Angie danced happily towards the checkout counter Carrie told Heidi, "I'll take the unicorn dress too."
"I see Elizabeth has taught you well," Heidi chuckled.
Carrie grinned. "I learned a long time ago not to mess with Mama Rollins."
Angie rushed into the beach house ahead of Catherine and Carrie.
"Daddy! DJ!" she called.
"We're in the kitchen," came their reply in unison.
The excited almost seven year old rushed in, hugged them both, then stood back, eyes sparkling.
"You'll never guess what's on the dress I bought to wear to my birthday party!"
Catherine and Carrie entered the room both wearing the universal expression for 'don't spoil her fun'.
"Lots of sequins?" DJ guessed, happy to play along.
"I think it must be cats," Steve said.
"IT'S GOATS!" Angie couldn't contain her excitement any longer. "Me and Mommy and Aunt Carrie found a dress with goats on it. Do you wanna see it?"
"Absolutely," Steve said.
"Me too!" DJ added.
Angie darted off to the downstairs bathroom to put on the already beloved goat dress.
"Do you need me to help you?" Catherine called after her.
"No," Angie called back. "I won't let it eat me this time."
"Eat her?" Steve asked with an amused smile.
"She had a little dressing room issue." Catherine chuckled. "It didn't dampen her excitement about the dress in the least."
"That's my girl." Steve smiled proudly. "Adapt and overcome."
"Here I come!" Angie squealed excitedly. "I'm ready for my party!"
