Chapter 10
"Nervous?" David wondered, eyes on Erica.
She was focused on Dr. Anderson and everything he was saying and doing. They were well into the procedure and David was doing a good job distracting her from what Dr. Anderson and his nurse we're doing.
Was she nervous? She didn't think so. Excited. Anxious. Happy. And so many more emotions she couldn't quite place.
"Not nervous, no," She finally flicked her eyes over to him and offered him a soft smile. "I'm thinking about how beautiful this baby will be. And how smart. Josh was a doctor. Alex and Olivia got early acceptance into some of the best schools in the country. I can only imagine what this child will be like."
She reached for his hand, and squeezed tightly. This wasn't were either of them had expected to be six weeks earlier, but it all felt so right.
"I'm sure he or she will end up a TV producer or model regardless."
She laughed, shrugging knowingly. "Yes. The Kane genes are very strong."
"Both of your genes are incredibly strong," Dr. Anderson mused. "I don't think anyone expected this little embryo," He motioned to the monitor to Erica's left, "to be viable, let alone as strong and healthy as it is."
The transfer was almost complete and soon they would be on their way back to Pine Valley for a very long two week wait.
"We know the sex of this little one, would you like to know?"
Did they want to know? They hadn't thought this far ahead. Rationally they understood that this was their son or daughter, but they'd forgotten the testing of their embryo would reveal the sex.
"Oh I didn't realize that was possible," Erica's voice was soft and filled with apprehension. She looked up at David who smiled and shook his head.
"This was all you, Erica. If you want to know, let's find out. If you don't, that's fine too."
"I think I'd like to wait."
If the transfer didn't take, she didn't want know the sex of the child they lost. Her heart couldn't bare it.
If the transfer took and the pregnancy was viable, learning the sex would make everything feel so much more real.
Dr. Anderson nodded and offered then a smile. He was just about done and the transfer had gone exactly to plan. He didn't like to give his patients false hope, but in this case he was quite confident the transfer would take. "All done," He started motioning to the monitor, "your embryo has been transferred. It's right where we want it. Everything looks great."
"Do you think it'll take? I mean, is there a chance?" She hadn't realized how desperately she needed this child until this very moment.
She'd wanted him or her from the moment she found out they existed. But she hadn't understand her desperation, her need, until this very moment.
"Your embryo has been placed exactly where we wanted it. It's healthy and strong, and so are you. Your other three embryo's have all gone on to be live births. I think you have reason to hope."
She let out a shaky breath and let her eyes slid closed.
She didn't know if she believed in Heaven, I'm prayer, in an afterlife, but she said one to her Mother and to Myrtle.
"I want you to take it easy for a few days. No bed rest, but nothing strenuous, no long walks, just relax, let your body do what's its made to do. I think it's best to avoid a plane or long car ride, just for tonight. If you can find a place to stay."
She nodded and moved to a seated position. "I booked a hotel already. I'll do whatever I have too."
"I've no doubt. We want a good build up of HCG in your system so try to refrain from testing for at least ten days. Though, it really is best if you wait for your beta results in fourteen days."
She would do anything and everything that was asked of her. Even if that meant following someone else's recommendations for a few days.
Dr. Anderson shook their hands and nodded to his nurse as they headed out.
"We should find somewhere to have dinner. You need to eat a substantial meal and then get a good night's rest."
"Don't you need to get back go Pine Valley?" She asked, motioning for him to turn around so she could change.
He shook his head and did as she wanted. "I can stay for awhile longer. Besides, I need to make sure you follow Dr. Anderson's advice."
Part of him believed that she would follow the advice to the letter. Part of him knew her better than most, and understood she'd struggle.
She scoffed through a laugh. "Yes doctor, now you can turn around and tell me where you're taking me for dinner."
She wasn't a fan of following directions or letting some take care of her when she was perfectly capable of it herself, but in this instance, she would willingly do both things.
This child was worth anything and everything she had to do to give them life.
