Chapter 17
They'd flown together to New York this time. He'd been tasked with distracting her for the morning.
She was incredibly nervous and needed her mind focused anywhere else.
Dr. Anderson was happy with her blood work, and her morning sickness was consistent with her gestation. He was confident they would see a healthy baby with a strong heartbeat, but naturally, nothing was given.
They'd had breakfast in a small cafe near the clinic and took a walk through a local park. They'd forgotten how much they enjoyed each other company and the morning had flown by.
Dr. Anderson wasted no time getting started on the appointment and her on an exam table, preparing for her ultrasound, less than fifteen minutes after they'd arrived.
"I can't look," Her voice was soft and anxious as she turned her head toward David. She'd waited for this moment for so long, here they were, and she was absolutely terrified.
She told anyone who would listen that she could handle the transfer not taking, but that was clearly untrue. She so desperately wanted this child, and the transfer failing would crush her soul.
He was already holding her hand and squeezed it reassuringly. He knew why she was so worried. She hadn't made it this far in her last pregnancy.
"We'll listen to the heartbeat, and then I'll flick on the monitor, and we can have a look."
Dr. Anderson was a calm, even tempered doctor who was careful to offer her hope while also being incredibly realistic about their chance.
She held her breath, eyes closed as she gripped David's hand. She could feel herself shaking, and her breathing was speeding up.
Dr. Anderson's eyes met David's and he smiled softly, knowing David's well trained ears were hearing what he was. He moved the wand a little left, and the sound pumped loudly.
"That is a healthy, strong heartbeat. Congratulations." He flicked on the monitor next to Erica. "Lets have a look."
David watched Erica exhale, watched her eyes open, and looked up at him, wide and filled with tears. And then she smiled at him.
Wide. Warm and so full of joy, it made his breath catch.
"You did it," He breathed eyes locked with hers. "Have a look," He motioned to the monitor and the grainy image that was appearing.
Dr. Anderson stopped the wand and pointed to the screen. "There you are. Happy, healthy, little fetus."
It was amazing how she was hardly pregnant, eight weeks and few days, and already you could make out the head, abdomen, and stubs that would be arms and legs.
"They always remind me of gummy bears at this gestation," Dr. Anderson smiled in their direction, noting how neither heard him, attention focused solely on the monitor.
"Is it..." Erica finally asked, tearing her eyes from the monitor only long enough to ask her question. "...is it alright?"
Dr. Anderson nodded. "Perfectly healthy and growing exactly as expected. Congratulations, you two. You did it."
They had done it. They had created life in the face of some of the worst circumstances someone could find themselves in.
She had been right that night at Wildwind. This was their child. This was their choice. Their plan. This was what they wanted, and they made it happen.
"Did you want to know the sex?" Dr. Anderson asked curiously. He watched them cast a quick glance in each other's direction before Erica spoke.
"Oh we would love to know."
"Any last guesses?" He asked, raising a curious eyebrow at them.
"Boy," They answered in near unison.
This was their son.
Dr. Anderson nodded, smile bright. "You're correct. The embryo was male. This little gummy bear is your son."
He was happy for them. When he first learned the truth about the embryo, he'd contemplated destroying it before they even visited. But after meeting them both, he knew they would end up here.
Erica Kane was the most determined person he had ever met, and there was little doubt she would bring a healthy boy into the world.
Odds be damned.
"I can't believe it," Erica breathed, eyes locked on the screen. "He's perfect. Can you believe we made a life?"
Could he believe that he was here? With her? His child grew safe inside of her. Could he believe that nearly thirty years ago, their DNA would create four children?
That one of those would come to be the child they were seeing on the monitor.
Nearly ten years since their relationship had ended and they were here, together, seven months from the birth of their son.
Had fate always considered to bond them together, or had they somehow made their own destiny?
