Sturgis Kentucky June 1943

"Ok boys move out, there are some cute Red Cross girls waiting for you. That means you to Nix" I shook a sleeping Nixon. Nixon opened his eyes stretched and smiled. On the other side of me Welsh slowly opened his eyes and smiled. My heart about stopped. Yeah I was screwed I always had a thing for guys with charming smiles.

The men mulled out of the train, got in line and waited for the red cross girls to hand them doughnuts and coffee.

"Hey Chris, you want any?" Talbert asked me. Talbert was next in line for coffee.

"Yeah, just a doughnut, I don't want any coffee" I told Talbert. I felt someone push me forward and I stumbled a hand steadied me before I fell face first into the concrete on the platform. I turned around to see who had helped me, but who ever it was had disappeared into the crowd.

The depot was filled with paratroopers and it was impossible to find an officer among all the enlisted men, who was starving for doughnuts and female attention.

I climbed onto a bench trying to survey the crowd, but it was impossible for me to find any officers, finally I located Winters, I stepped down from the bench and pushed my way thru the crowd.

"Oh, Lieutenant, I what just looking for you, what are our orders?" I asked Winters

"We need to get the men out to the waiting trucks" Winters told her

"Ok, I'll get the men moving, they will be ready and on the trucks in 20 minutes" I saluted Winters and stepped back into the crowd to find my platoon.

I quickly located Talbert and Grant, I shook my head the two charming bastards where flirting with a couple of giggling red cross girl "Help me get the guys moving, Winters are waiting for us by the trucks behind the building" I told the two men, i wasn't sure they heard me so I Stepped between the men and the girls and put my hands on my hip. I could feel my temper rise.

15 minutes later the men from first platoon was loaded up and the trucks drove towards the camp. I was sitting in the back with the men, still slightly pissed off. Most of the men were laughing and smoking, and I couldn't help but think about what the next month would bring.

The truck arrived at the camp and drove thru gates, I sighed it was clearly a place where the army would prepare the 506th for war.

The truck stopped and the men jumped off. I was the last soldier on the truck, I was about to jump of when some held up a hand out to me, I looked down at Welsh and started ignore him "just take my hand, I won't bite" Welsh said

I could feel my self hesitate, I knew if I took the hand Welsh offered me he would be able to feel what ever it was I felt for him and I wasn't sure I was ready for that. So I hesitated for a second or two, welsh motioned for me to take his hand, so I took the hand, and sure enough I felt a tingling in my hand, but chose to ignore it.

I could tell Welsh felt the same tingling feeling I did and he held on to my hand for a second longer than he should have, he let go of it when we heard Sobel order Easy Company to fall in and stand at attention.

Winters and Welsh stood in front of first platoon and I was standing in the first row, with Talbert behind me.

I knew Talbert had noticed the little moment between Welsh and I. Welsh had yet to prove himself to the men, from what they had seen so far Welsh was a good officer, but still they didn't know him yet. Grant told me a few days ago that Talbert was still confused regarding his feelings towards me, and I noticed the look on his face when I took Welsh's hand, he had felt a stint of jealousy when he noticed the look in my eyes, when I looked at Welsh.

Sobel paced up and down in front of the company. I followed him with my eyes and had to strain my self from rolling my eyes at him. Finally Sobel stopped in front of me "Sergeant Christenson, did you shine your boots last night?" I had to bite back a dirty answer.

Talbert and Grant winched, they knew Sobel would be hard on me "Yes Sir" Chris answered, I was about to cry from frustration, I did everything after the book and Sobel still hated me. so I did what I always did and put on brave face and just smiled, Sobel would never get me down.

I couldn't count the times, I had cried in the shower from frustration, not because I couldn't handle Sobel. It was apart me that I hated, I had always been a crier. So the only place where the men couldn't see me was the shower so, I knew I couldn't let them see me weak, I didn't want their pity, the only one who knew I wasn't as tough as I let on was My brother. Pat was a big help, he often helped me at least as much as he could, as much as he could, without getting in to trouble.

"Well, I can't tell, Night guard duty for a week" Sobel said and looked at the company "Dismissed" he said and walked of.

Winters turned to his Platoon Sergeant "Sergeant Christenson, move the men out to bivouac"

"First platoon, move out" I ordered and the men moved towards their bivouac area. I looked at the land, sighed and turned to my platoon.

Grant and Talbert had already pitched their pup tent and was digging straggle trenches.

I looked around, I assumed I would share a tent with my brother, I located him. Pat had already pitched the tent and was sitting with his sketch pad drawing the scenery before him.

"Hey, thanks for…" I sighed

"Hey, no problem, got to keep a roof over your head" Pat said and hugged me.

I dropped my gear of and sat down next to Pat "What do you think…" I asked and nodded towards Welsh

"About what?" my brother asked me teasingly

"About the new lieutenant" I asked and nudged my brother.

Pat studied me for a second and I blushed "I don't know, he is ok I guess" Pat answered

"Yeah I guess" I said and looked towards Welsh

I walked off to find Winters, I needed to know what our orders were.

I found Welsh, Dick and Nixon sitting around a table with what looked like a map of the area on it.

"Lieutenant Winters, Sir, I was wondering what our orders are" I asked him

"Christenson, the men has the rest of the day of. Tomorrow, we are moving out on a three day maneuver" Winters told me

"Ok, I will let the men know" I said and wandered back to the sight where first platoon had pitched their tents.

I passed Grant and Luz "Looks like we have the rest of the night of, get some rest we are going on maneuver tomorrow"

I walked back to the tent I shared with Pat, I needed some alone time, before dinner was served, I figured we would be eating SOS or Shit on a shingle, which was the Army's favorite meal for the men in the field. Made on a field stove, the dish consisted of creamed chipped beef on toast.

I climbed into my tent and laid down, I wrapped a blanket around myself and snuggled into it. I had always been one to snuggle and Pat and I had shared a bed at home. I somehow felt safe when I was wrapped up in blankets. I was tough, but also fragile at timed and sometimes I had problems asking for help. All this I knew all this about myself and I was very well aware of the fact I needed to work on it. After joining the army I had definitely become better about asking for help.

The yell for Dinner came and I wandered over to the mess area, I got in line behind Luz and Talbert. The two men hadn't noticed me and they were talking about Welsh and I "Have you seen the way she looks at him" Luz said

"I noticed" Talbert said

I pushed Talbert on the back "Stop, there is nothing there, there never will be" I pushed past the two men while mumbling something about men being idiots. Why couldn't they just leave me alone, I just wanted to get to where ever they were going and kill some Germans.

I sat down next to Pat and after a while we turned and sat back to back. They were talking silently about, Baseball and home.

Winters and Welsh walked by us on their way to get some grub. Welsh kept looking at us while they walked by. I heard him ask "Who is that with the sergeant? Her boyfriend?"

Winters followed Welsh gaze "Who, what? Oh, that is her brother" Winters answered and smiled toward Pat and I

"Brother, oh" Welsh and Winters walked past the two siblings.

I dropped my head and tried to avoid looking at Welsh. Pat knew what I was doing and smiled. He just shook his head, some things never changed, and his sister being to insecure and shy to admit to anyone, even herself, that she might actually like someone was one of them.

….

"This will be there largest airborne exercise to date and will combine paratroopers and glider borne" Sink was standing before the 506th

The maneuvers pitched the red army against the blue army. Easy loaded up in the C47. Welsh was jumpmaster on my plane. I was sitting right next to him, it was schorching hot, the plane was weaving and bobbing, and Bull who was sitting furthest from the door, got sick and started to throw up in his helmet.

I was sitting next to Welsh and I started to get sick from the stench in the plane and so did some of the other men. Not all of them managed to vomit in their helmet and soon the floor was swimming with their breakfast.

I tried to hold it back and Pat, who was sitting next to her, found quite amusing, he did feel sick as well.

I couldn't hold it back anymore and I threw up in Welsh's lap. I was not only felt terribly ashamed, I also couldn't believe I had vomited on a lieutenant, I was sure there would be hell to pay for that.

The green light came on and the soldiers started to jump out of the C47, Pat felt like someone had swung a wand over his head and put an all better spell on him.

After falling on her ass, I gathered her chute and found her Company. The order to gather around the CO sounded, the men assembled around Sobel who told them they wouldn't be moving out until dark. The men settled down and waited for the dark.

I cleaned up and sat alone preparing my gear for the march, making sure I had everything I would need for the march and that I had packed whatever I needed to help my boys.

I looked around the area studying my friends. I noticed Welsh, when he saw me sitting alone, probably looking a little pale and he decided to go come over and her, let me know he wasn't mad at me anymore for throwing up in his lap. After we landed he had chewed me out, I had apologized and disappeared to avoid to kill him or kiss him. I decided to stay out of his way since and that had bothered him a little.

I jumped to my feet and saluted him.

Welsh just smirked, god that smirk did things to my poor heart "At Ease soldier

"Sergeant, I just wanted to let you know…, that…Hell, Chris I shouldn't have yelled at you like I did" Welsh used my first name, somehow it didn't sit right with him to apologize to a woman using her last name.

"Thank you sir" I looked at Welsh, who opened and closed his mouth, not knowing what to say to bring down my invisible walls

"Well…carry on" Welsh turned and walked away

Welsh walked over to Nixon who slapped him on the back "She blocked you out, been there" Nix said, I smiled to myself a little, yeah Nixon crossed me once.

"Yeah, she sure as hell did" Welsh took a swig from his canteen

"Well, she's a tough one" Nixon heard Hester call for him and walked away.

…..

When Welsh walked away I looked after him, I felt a hand on my shoulder "You know, you can't really blame him, how pissed would you have been if someone tossed their cookies in your lap?" Talbert asked

"I know, I guess I should apologize sometime" I sat back down. I knew I wasn't going to, I was just going to ignore him until the flutters I felt in my stomach every time he was near me disappeared

The march started at twilight and they waded thru a streams and at one point we were climbing the far embankment. I was making three feet just to slide back two. Finally Talbert and Grant had enough and dragged me up. When I made it the embankment, I looked into the eyes of a smirking Welsh, who didn't say anything, but just smiled at me and turned away. I wanted to smack that smock look of his face, so I kept going

Around midnight I was so tired of stumbling over roots, rocks and stumps I was ready to scream. So lucky for her the company was ordered to dig in.

I had the first night guard in the OP. When I got there, I noticed Welsh was in the foxhole. I closed my eyes and sighed of course he would be there cause this was a hell specially designed for me.

"Lieutenant, what are you doing here?" I asked him

"Pulling night guard, get in plenty of room" Welsh answered

I looked at the foxhole, it seemed rather small to me, which meant I would be standing almost on top of Welsh for the next two hours. I didn't know if my determination to stay away from him could with stand the test of, standing so close to him for hours.

"Who dug this damn hole" I muttered under her breath and jumped in

"I did" Welsh smirked

"Figures" I hid a smile. Bastard knew he would have to share a foxhole with me and probably dug the hole so I would have to stand on top of him.

The night was quiet and the first 30 minutes no words was exchanged

Welsh looked at me, he was determined to get me to talk to him, "where you from Sergeant?"

"California, Oakland and You" I asked Welsh

"Pennsylvania" Welsh said

"Why the airborne lieutenant?" I asked

"To fight with the best" Welsh answered

"The best" I shook my head, sure the soldiers in the company was the best but our XO, well Sobel was a class a douche bag

"Why so cynical sergeant?" Welsh asked

"Have you met Sobel?" I asked him. If he thought Sobel was the best he was painfully wrong

"Yeah, I have…" Welsh let out a small laugh

"Then tell me we got the best" I said and signaled the conversation was over

Welsh looked at me out of the corner of his eye, he could tell I was thinking about something

I pulled at the grass around our foxhole and asked him "Have you heard of the spaghetti incident?"

"No, can't say that I have" Welsh said

"Well Winters just got promoted…"

Toccoa 1942

I walked into the mess hall, the men were packing away the spaghetti, or the red army noodles as Perconte called it.

I sat down next to Talbert and Grant "I can't eat this" she said and pushed the plate away from me, I hated the smell of the spaghetti and canned tomatoes.

Grant shrugged and took the plate and helped himself too the spaghetti. Talbert however looked at his friend "Come on, when you think we will get grub like this again"

"I don't know, and I don't care" I didn't get a chance to say anything else.

The doors to the mess hall flew open and Sobel was standing at the door "Easy Company, orders changed, change in to your PT gear, we are running Currahee"

The men groaned and changed into their PT gear.

"The mountain looked the way the bottom of our plane did today and the men who took Sobel's offer of a ride down the mountain, were gone the next day" I finished

Welsh heard two men approach and turned around with his Thompson, ready to fire the blank shots in the machine gun "Ship" he called out

"Yard" Guarnere's voice called out and thirty seconds later he and Toye appeared.

"Anything to report" Toye asked

"Nothing everything is quiet" I yawned and jumped out of the foxhole eager to get away from Welsh

Welsh collected his gear "You got anywhere to sleep?" he asked

"Yeah, I in a hole with Grant and Tab, so I am good" I answered him

"Ok, well sleep tight sergeant" Welsh said

"Yeah, you to" I sighed to Welsh's back as he walked away.
