Theme: To Be Poor, Homeless, and Helpless But Not Hopeless

Time Period: A Flashback

Month: November 1983 (Thanksgiving time frame)

Situation: When Sarah (Emilia Clarke) is six months pregnant, she loses her job (a waitress) and then experiences premature labor (a stress related false alarm)

Scene 1: Sarah's workplace (a diner)- The Boss' office

Sarah (entering her boss' office): Somebody said you wanted to see me

The boss: Sarah, you are correct. Please sit down.

Sarah (nervous and stressed, she sits down in a chair): What do you need to tell me?

The boss (giving Sarah a pink slip): You are an excellent waitress. I appreciate your hard work, but I will have to let you go. In other words, I am laying you off.

Sarah (emotional, she begs her boss): Thanksgiving is almost here. I am six months pregnant. I need this job because I have a baby on the way. This job has helped me to pay my bills. Please don't let me go.

The boss: I feel sorry for you, but I can't keep you due to budget cuts.

Sarah (beginning to feel the onset of labor pains): Goodbye

The Boss: Goodbye, Sarah

(Once outside and in her car, Sarah allows her tears to fall freely down her face. Struggling through painful contractions, Sarah fears she is going into premature labor. She visits the doctor asap.)

Scene: The Hospital-Sarah's Hospital room

Sarah (writhing in pain, she clutches her stomach): Ouch...my precious baby

A doctor (checking Sarah): Your blood pressure is skyhigh. You are already dilated one centimeter. This is not normal.

Sarah (speaking through contractions): My bag of water hasn't broken yet

Doctor: It is probably stress. Stress is not good for you or the baby. Stress cause premature labor. Why are you stressed?

Sarah (fighting back tears): I lost my job today. I was laid off. I will become poor and homeless very soon. I will not be able to afford my health insurance.

Doctor: I understand

Sarah: I might die in childbirth without medical care

A nurse (resting a comforting hand on Sarah's shoulder): You will not die in childbirth. Everything will be okay. Someday you will find a reason to be happy and grateful.

Sarah: I want to believe you, but I can't

(Eventually Sarah is given medication and discharged from the hospital. The flashback ends)

Cameron: Thanks for explaining
