Chapter 2: Becoming Spider-Man
Hey everyone I'm back with a new chapter. I'm glad to see you all like this new story and I would like to give a big shoutout to Superherotimefan for helping me come up with the new suit for Jaden. I hope you like what I have planned. Please Review and Enjoy.
We find ourselves in Jaden's room as he was making some adjustments to his mask.
"Gotta cover those eye holes." Jaden said.
Pushing back in his chair, he rolled across his room and grabbed some sunglasses off his shelf before pushing back.
Popping the lenses out he sews them onto the mask and grins.
That night we find ourselves atop a tall building looking out at the city.
Down below he sees a mugger in an alley trying to rob a man.
"Please just take my wallet!" The man begs.
As the thug was about to take it, a hand grabbed him and slammed the thug against the wall.
"Not so fun when it's you is it?" Looking out the man sees a figure in a red mask throw the thug against the trash cans before firing webs and tying him up.
"That'll hold ya until the cleanup crew shows up." The figure laughs before making his escape.
Recovering the man watches the man scale the building with only his hands.
"What the?" He gasps.
The next day, Jaden was at Winry's shop we see Jaden looking around her junk pile.
"You're not trying to find another computer, are you? We got lucky that one time Jaden it's never gonna happen again." Winry assures.
"I know and I've accepted that. I'm just looking for something new to try and work on." Jaden said.
"Well maybe if you get good enough, you'll stop asking me to fix your skateboard every time you break it." Winry smirks.
"Sure and while we're at it, you can try studying so you can ace math without my help." Jaden counters.
"Touche Cooper." Winry smiles.
As Jaden rummaged around he noticed an old police scanner and grins.
"Hey Winry I'll take this one." Jaden said picking it up.
"An old police scanner? Are you sure? I'm not even sure that thing works." Winry shrugs.
"I'm sure." Jaden said.
"Why would you even want one of those?" Winry asks before getting an idea. "Oh I know why." She smirks. "Jaden you sneaky devil."
"Huh? Wha?" Jaden said nervously.
"You're gonna use this to try and get better photos for your job at the Chronicle." Winry assumes.
"Yeah you caught me." Jaden breathes in relief. "Help me get on Lois' good side."
"Alright but don't go bragging you got it. I don't want you to do anything crazy." Winry said.
"I won't Winry I owe you." Jaden smiles.
"Yeah yeah, now get out of here before I change my mind." Winry said punching his shoulder.
"Hey take it easy I need that arm." Jaden said.
As he rubbed his arm Winry couldn't help but giggle.
That night, Jaden was on the roof of a tall building.
"Alright let's do this." Jaden said holding out his arm.
Firing a web, it flew out and attached itself right to the target.
Grinning Jaden was beginning to get used to these powers.
He hadn't figured them all out but he was getting good at controlling his new strength and abilities. Heck to everyone he knew they still thought he was the same.
"Attention all units we have an armed robbery in the area." Turning around Jaden heard the footage from the police scanner he got from Winry.
"Suspect has shoulder-length blonde hair and last seen escaping on foot."
Down below we see the criminal making his escape with a huge bag of money in his hand.
Suddenly from above a masked figure swung in and fired a web that attached to his back.
Pulling with all his might the figure yanked the criminal off his feet making him hit the ground hard.
Before he could get up the criminal was grabbed from behind tied up.
"Hey buddy, don't suppose you got any friends?" The masked figure asks scaring him. "Because if you do I might let you off easy."
The next morning at the Police Station everyone looked in shock to see 3 criminals including the one that was caught dangling by webs over the entrance.
"Please get us down!"
"Help!"
As the civilians took out their phones they noticed a figure in a mask swing away.
At the Daily Chronicle, Jaden entered the room to see Lois and all the other employees gathered around.
"Jaden." Lois gestured as he walked over.
"What's going on?" Jaden asks.
"Big meeting, the Chief has a big announcement." Lois said.
"Alright everyone listen up!" The Chief calls out getting their attention. "These past few days something interesting has happened. Multiple criminals all with serious rap sheets have been captured and brought to the police tied up in webs. And this morning this kid with a cellphone posted this."
Looking to the screen they see a small figure swinging from the buildings and making his escape.
"Not a very good image Chief. You can barely make anything out." Lois points out.
"I know. No one can get a good look at this guy. All we have on him is that he wears a red mask. That's why I want all of you on high alert. If any of you can get me a story or even a photo of this vigilante then you'll be in for a real treat." The Chief said before dismissing everyone.
"What do you think of all this Lois?" Jaden asks as they headed to her station.
"A vigilante in our city? Please I think Chief has been reading too many comic books. I bet it's just some guy in a costume playing superhero." Lois rolls her eyes.
"Let me guess you're one of those "I need to see it to believe it" people." Jaden assumes.
"Now you're learning." Lois smirks when they heard a ringing.
"Hey mom." Jaden said answering it.
"Jaden you got the interview!" Maya said in an excited tone on the other line.
"Wait what?" Jaden said standing up.
Chuckling Lois gestures with her hand telling him to step outside.
Walking out to the hallway, Jaden responds. "Wait seriously? They want to talk to me?"
"Yes, the school is sending one of their teachers over to interview you. If they like what they see you might have a shot." Maya said.
"That's great mom." Jaden smiles.
"I'll send you the details about everything." Maya said hanging up.
Smiling Jaden leans against the wall.
'Well dad this is what you wanted.' Jaden thought.
As he turned to walk away he saw some framed articles including one with Shiny Chariot and her stage suit.
"Hmm." Jaden said interested.
Back home, Jaden was working on his mask giving it a huge upgrade along with the rest of his suit.
A few days later, we see Lois in line at the bank.
"Yeah Jaden I'm at the bank near the office I'll meet you there." Lois said on her phone.
As she was about to go up, a man dressed in black shoves past hr.
"Hey buddy wait your turn." Lois said.
However that moment was ruined as the man pulls out a gun and fires at the ceiling scaring everyone.
"Alright listen to me and everyone lives a lot longer!" He calls out.
"Oh my god!" The clerk screams as they were being robbed.
Lois tried to make a run for it when the robber grabs her arm and yanks her in aiming his gun at her.
"Now listen up! I want 10,000 right now and if I don't get people are gonna start dying." He declares as the people panicked.
Gulping in fear, Lois had no idea what to do.
In the terror and confusion no one noticed a figure crawl in from above before dropping down.
"You know if you're gonna rob a bank you really shouldn't dress the part dude." A voice said startling everyone.
Turning around everyone saw a figure in a red mask with black lines running down it like webs, white lens with gold highlights around the edges, a hood over his head with blue highlights on the tips, blue-coated shoulder pads, a black spider logo on his chest, a red suit with black pads, black fingerless gloves on his hands and red, black and brown pants. "Who the heck are you? Are you a cop?" The robber asks.
"Really? You seriously think I'm a cop? You know any cops who would rock this awesome mask, this hood, or even dress like this?" He asks gesturing to himself.
"No way." Lois mumbles.
"Listen I'm gonna have to ask that you put the young lady down before things get ugly." He points.
"And what if I don't?" The robber threatens.
Firing a web it knocks the gun out of his hand.
"What the heck?" Before the robber could react, he fires another web hitting him in the face. "Augh! What the hell is this stuff?!"
"Best you don't know." The figure said yanking Lois to safety. "You okay?"
"Uh yeah…I'm fine." Lois said speechless.
"Great. Hey would you be a dear and call the cops while I deal with this guy?" The figure asks.
Putting her down the masked man walks towards the robber.
"Hey! Stay back!" The robber yells pulling out a knife.
"Is that a knife? Is that a real knife?" The masked man asks in a scared tone.
"Yes it's a real knife." The robber threatens.
"Oh no, my weakness is small knives." The masked man said before firing a web trapping him against the wall. "Oh wait, all good now."
As the masked man fired more webs trapping the criminal all the civilians inside looked at him in awe including Lois.
"Alright people, it's all good now." The masked man said as the police showed up. "Hey Officer got him all nice and wrapped up for you."
"Freeze!" He said taking out a gun. "Who are you?"
"Does no one grasp the concept of the mask? Ugh! Some people I swear." The masked man groans.
They shot at him but the masked man dodges them all with ease.
"Seriously? I just did like 80% of your job." Firing a web the masked man swings out of the bank and makes his escape.
Needless to say, everyone was amazed and intrigued by this new hero, especially Lois.
Back at the Daily Chronicle, Lois slams an article down on the chief's desk.
"I got your vigilante story right here chief." Lois declares.
"You saw him?" The Chief asks.
"I didn't just see him, he saved my life." Lois said as the chief looked at the article.
"Spider-Man?" The Chief asks.
"Yeah we didn't get a name out of him so I came up with one." Lois said.
"Did you get a picture?" The Chief asks.
"No I was too busy not dying to get a picture, but I got the article." Lois said when Jaden came running in.
"Lois! Are you okay? I heard about the robbery." Jaden asks concerned.
"I'm fine. Where were you? I've been calling you for an hour." Lois said.
"I'm sorry Lois I had to chase something." Jaden said.
"Ugh you're never around when I need you." Lois said.
"Well then I guess you don't want this." Jaden said holding out his camera.
On it we see a small picture of Spider-Man swinging away.
"You got a picture? But how?" Lois gasps.
"I heard the gunshot during the call and rushed out but on my way, I saw this guy swinging away. I thought it would be something worth snapping a shot of. Do you like it?" Jaden asks.
"Like it? I love it. I smell front page with this. Come here you amazing little photographer." Grabbing Jaden by the shoulders she kisses him on the cheek.
Pausing both Lois and Jaden froze.
As a blush appeared on Jaden's face Lois cleared her throat and stepped back.
"Uh thanks Jaden. Sorry I uh got a little carried away." Lois said.
"N-No problem." Jaden stutters.
"Well not bad Cooper talk about a bonus." The Chief chuckles.
Shaking it off, Jaden puts the photo down and sees the title. "Spider-Man…hmm I like it." Jaden mumbles.
A few days later, Jaden and his mother were preparing for his interview.
"Oh my goodness, this is happening. This is really happening." Maya said pacing back and forth.
"Mom take it easy, I'm the one being interviewed not you." Jaden said.
"I'm sorry I'm just so excited, my baby could be learning and working at a prestigious academy. If you pass it could open so many doors for you." Maya said.
"I know that's why I want to get in. Plus since the school is just on the outskirts of the city I won't be too far away." Jaden reminds.
"Oh your father would be so happy you're doing this, god rest his soul." Maya said.
"It's because of him I even learned about this chance." Jaden said when the doorbell rang.
"Oh she's here." Maya yelps.
Opening the door, Maya sees a woman with blue hair and glasses wearing a witch's outfit. This was Ursula Callistis.
"Hello uh Maya Cooper?" Ursula asks.
"Yep that's me. You must be the Professor we heard was coming." Maya assumes.
"Correct. My name is Ursula Callistis and I am an instructor at Luna Nova Academy." She nods.
"Well come on in." Maya said as Jaden walked up to her.
"Uh nice to meet you Prof. Callistis." Jaden said holding out his hand.
"A pleasure Mr. Cooper. I must say we were surprised at the fact that you stumbled upon one of our applications. How did you get it?" Ursula asks shaking his hand.
"My father said he found it when he was looking for opportunities for me, sadly I never learned how he stumbled upon it." Jaden said showing it to her.
"I see, well you see Jaden you should know that for years Luna Nova has been exclusively an all girls school. The only reason we are allowing this fellowship is because the school is in need of more admissions." Ursula said.
"So wait are you saying?" Jaden starts.
"The boy to girl ratio is very VERY low. Meaning I need to make sure that if I were to admit you, I need to know that you will treat this opportunity with the upmost respect and not do anything inappropriate or reckless." Ursula said.
"No, of course not. I wouldn't even think about it." Jaden said quickly.
"Hmm very well. Let's begin, shall we?" Ursula smiles softly.
Waving her hand, a file magically appeared in her hands.
"I took the liberty of looking into your files. Very impressive grade-wise, a few Science fair wins under your belt as well." Ursula said impressed.
"Uh I'm pretty good at that stuff." Jaden chuckles.
"My Jaden is quite the little brainiac frankly he could have skipped a few grades if he wanted to." Maya said.
"Hmm why didn't you?" Ursula asks curiously.
"Well I didn't want to leave my friends behind." Jaden admits.
"And loyalty, you don't see much of that anymore." Ursula smiles.
"Yeah to be honest I really think I could benefit from this program." Jaden said.
"Well Jaden as you know Magic has been a mostly witch-related field meaning that when you're not in core classes you and the other students in the program will be working on campus helping with the students, staff, or helping with issues around the school." Ursula explains.
"Kinda sounds like Jaden would have a job on campus when he's not studying." Maya said.
"That's exactly what it would be. Would you be fine with that?" Ursula asks.
"Sure I don't mind helping out a little." Jaden shrugs.
"Excellent. Now before we continue, I need to know do you have any commitments outside of school that I need to know about?" Ursula asks.
"Yes I have a part time job at the Daily Chronicle so would I be allowed to leave campus for it?" Jaden asks.
"Fortunately, since the distance between this city and the school is not large I'm sure we can work something out. Of course, I will ask that you make sure that your studies and duties to the school come first." Ursula said.
"I understand." Jaden nods.
"Very well, I have a question. Why do you want to be a part of this program?" Ursula asks.
"Well, my dad thought it would help me broaden my horizons learn some new skills that could benefit me in the future and I agree. I feel this school could even help awaken some new talents of mine." Jaden said.
"You certainly have the drive and your records show you certainly might have the grades to keep up with the others. There's just one last rule you need to know." Ursula said.
"Anything." Jaden said.
"While magic is well known throughout the world what is taught throughout the academy cannot be shared. Meaning that you cannot share sensitive or crucial information with anyone unless given permission." Ursula said.
"So I guess asking you to give the Daily Chronicle an exclusive interview is out of the question?" Jaden jokes.
"Sorry I don't do interviews." Ursula smirks in amusement.
"Can't blame a guy for asking." Jaden shrugs making her giggle.
"Well Jaden, you've answered all my questions. I'll relay these to the headmistress and you should hear back within a few days." Ursula said standing up.
"Uh thank you ma'am. I hope I get in." Jaden said.
"Oh, I think you have a pretty good chance." Ursula smiles at him.
As she walks to the door Jaden and Maya cheered in delight.
Giggling Ursula turns her head and noticed a picture of Jaden and his parents at the Shiny Chariot event. Hmm wow how long has it been since I heard about that event?' She thought before leaving.
A few days later, we find ourselves at Ryan Cooper's grave with Jaden putting a flower in front of it.
"H-Hey dad, it's me. I uh I got in. Yeah I'm in the program at Luna Nova. Mom's super excited. She thinks I'm gonna learn so much and she also thinks I might meet a girl there. Not that I wouldn't mind a girlfriend I just hope she's a nice girl." Jaden chuckles trying to lighten the mood but couldn't. "Thanks for finding me this opportunity Dad. It means a lot to me and…I want you to know I'm gonna do my best to use these powers to help others and use my powers responsibly. I don't know how you got that flyer but I'm grateful you did dad."
As he turns away Jaden runs into the city.
Flashback:
We find Ryan Cooper looking at some programs.
"Hmm no, no. Jaden would hate this." Ryan said putting them back.
Walking out of the building he made his way to his car not noticing a short old woman with light blue hair and witch's outfit flying on her broom with a bag full of flyers. This was Samantha Badcock.
"Alright I need to get these last applicants out before the deadline." She said as a gust of wind rattled her broom. "Why do I feel like I'm forgetting something? Oh well."
As she takes off in the opposite direction one of her pockets was still open and a flyer flew down and landed right on the windshield of Ryan's car.
"Huh?" Reaching out Ryan took the flyer and smiled. "Perfect."
Flashback End:
That night we see Jaden atop the tall building again looking down at the city.
Lifting his head up, Jaden sees the tower on the outskirts of the city.
"I'm gonna have my work cut out for me." Jaden said taking a deep breath.
Grabbing his mask he puts it on revealing him to be in his Spider-Man outfit.
Turning to the edge, Spider-Man slowly walks to it before starting a run.
Leaping over the edge, Spider-Man dives down into the city and fires a web allowing him to swing out.
This hero's journey was about to get exciting.
