Chapter 47

Olivia liked surprises. During the last seven months Fitz had surprised her often. He was heading to Boston this evening. Unfortunately, there wouldn't be a surprise tonight. He wasn't going to get there before she left for the hospital. He missed her and was anxious to see her. He wanted to hold her and make sure she was alright. As of right now, he assumed that she was. They had talked last night. She had sounded happy and upbeat but there was some unease, tension in her voice. She assured him she was alright but he was worried about her. In a few days, unless he opted to tell her earlier, Olivia Pope was going to find out that she wasn't Olivia Pope! He still hadn't recovered from the shock of it.

Tessa and Uncle Jim weren't just current lovers. They had a past. A past that included a sexual affair whereas Olivia had been conceived. Conceived and passed off as the child of Thomas Pope. Tessa had confirmed it herself by having DNA samples of Thomas Pope and Olivia tested. Thomas Pope wasn't the father. James Lockheed was! This could've easily been one of his celebrity client's picadilloes but it wasn't. This farfetched seemingly impossible story was about the love of his life. Olivia. How in the world could he keep this thing from causing her hurt and pain? He couldn't! Even with all of his money and other resources there wasn't damn thing he could do!

Her entire life has been a lie. He was shaking his head. Olivia was a very special woman. She saw the world and everything in it in black and white. With her scientific mind gray areas didn't exist. What she was about to learn about herself and her family would shake her. Her mother had lied to her all of her life. Thomas Pope wasn't her father! For Fitz that was a good thing

At this point there wasn't any reason in the world to keep him from destroying the man. It was his first inclination but he couldn't do anything until he saw the effect this entire debacle had on Olivia. She was going to be devastated. Regardless of how badly the man had behaved over the years, he had still been her father for twenty-four years. God, he didn't want Olivia hurt over this! What in the hell could Tessa have been thinking to keep this from her daughter?

Thankfully Drey was able to clear his schedule for ten days. Meaning that including his usual weekends he'd be in Boston for two weeks. Everything was covered. "Go and take care of Olivia and whatever the deal is in Boston. You're the boss Fitz. You haven't taken a real vacation in years. The team doesn't mind stepping up." His office was a well-run business and everyone was tight. Everyone respected each other. Fitz was the only bachelor and none family man in the group. He had often covered for others. As Drey had said, now it's his turn.

The pilot has just announced their descent into Logan. Even under the circumstances it felt good to be home. Wherever Olivia was, that was home. While waiting to deplane Fitz talked to Security. He wanted an update on Thomas Pope and his most recent movements. Hopefully the man had returned to the Caribbean. He didn't need a double complication with that fool running around. He was still deciding on the tact he would take with this current situation.

He finally decided to go directly to the Bostonian to talk to Olivia's parents, her true parents. Their conversation over the phone had given him a great deal to ponder. A face to face was in order. Decisions were going to be made that would affect them all in the next twelve to twenty-four hours. He had more questions. Whether they would be answered he didn't know but they would be asked.

Olivia had actually spent the afternoon with her mother at the Bostonian. They had an early dinner at the Bonaventure Restaurant. Uncle Jim had joined them. This was the first time Olivia had actually taken note of the two of them interacting together. She had felt they were very comfortable with each other considering the fact that they had recently been bitter enemies. Looking at the two of them one felt a certain energy in the room. Sometimes energy dispersed like that led her to form images. She closed her eyes hoping for a visual. Nothing.

"Uncle Jim, thank-you so much for agreeing to stay on here in Boston after finding out my father was in town. I don't think he truly accepts the fact that mother is done with him. With that state of mind, he could be unpredictable. Thanks for watching out for her. There can never be too many eyes as far as my father is concerned.

The fact that he was here in Boston and didn't show his face at my graduation has been an eye opener. I knew that he had disowned me because of my relationship with Fitz but he knows the hard work I put in over the last four years. He knows the emotional struggles of medical school. Sure; I was an exceptional student but I was a foreigner here. I adapted well but for him not to even acknowledge my accomplishment. It was mean and vengeful.

He kicked me out of my home because I dared to love Fitz. He has said he'll never acknowledge our children. I'm beginning to realize he doesn't deserve my love or devotion. Fitz had been willing to show him a bit of grace because he is my father. After this latest stunt, he can expect nothing from him. I'm thinking to wash my hands of him just as Tommy has done. I think we all have given the man more consideration than he deserves."

"You don't have to thank me, Olivia. I was staying on anyway to wrap up business with the condo, which is mostly complete by the way. As for Thomas Pope, I have known him far longer than any of you. I've known the type of man he was for years. Quite frankly, none us can predict his state of mind. I was happy to see after your mother. These circumstances have given us a chance to mend our broken friendship.

Like Fitz, I don't trust Thomas Pope to be a gentleman without someone reminding him. He was right to be two steps ahead of the man. If not for the security Fitz had in place, Tessa would've been at his mercy. I owe him for that. Your mother and I are renewing an old friendship through all of this. That's a good thing."

"I feel the same way. You and mother willing to put your differences aside means everything to me. You two have long been my favorite people. When will you head home Uncle Jim?"

"Being my own boss has its perks. I have absolutely nowhere to be. I haven't decided when I'll head back. Your mother's company and the great city of Boston are a winning combination."

"It's a great city. One day I promise to share the Boston experience with you both! This has been a great afternoon but I need to get back to prepare for my shift. I may have time for a catnap. Why don't I plan to come back tomorrow. We could try another restaurant here in the hotel or we could order room service. I can't tell you how good it is to see you two as friends."

"Well then, let's plan on you coming back tomorrow. This has been lovely."

"Your mother and I needed a push to put us back on a conciliatory road. I'm very glad that we have put the past behind us. Tessa's right. These last few days have been very nice."

"Good, I'll see you both tomorrow."

On the ride back home, Olivia was in deep thought. Had she really seen what she thought she had seen? Did Uncle Jim stare at her mother just a moment too long? Was there a wistfulness in her mother's voice each time she said James? Was Fitz correct in his theory that there was something between the two of them? They'd been in States for less than a week. Surely such a connection was not possible in so short period of time.

Fitz' statement was in the back of her mind. She had dismissed his thoughts as her head was filled with memories of the bitterness between the two them. His words came back to her. "Are you sure your mother and Uncle Jim aren't involved?" She had laughed at the time. Now she wasn't so sure that he hadn't seen and sensed what she had seen this afternoon. It wasn't that she was totally turned off to the possibility of a connection, it just seemed so unlikely. They had disliked each other so intently for so many years.

It was one thing to let go of the past and become friendly. It was quite another to look at each other with secret smiles and longing. There was something going on between her mother and her godfather. What a conundrum! Fitz had been right. What should she do? They were adults. Should she wait to be informed of the connection? She loved those two people. One was her true parent and the other had always acted as one. If they were to embark on some type of relationship, shouldn't she be happy about it?

One person that wouldn't be happy about it would be her father. Thomas Pope had always seen his wife as his possession. A little thing called a divorce wouldn't change that. This was evident because of his recent foray to her condo. Even after what had transpired between them, a man like Thomas Pope, a master manipulator, still believed he had the upper hand.

She must talk to Fitz. If what they both now suspected was true how would this new revelation fit into their lives? She was going to try and reach Fitz right now. Maybe he was out of court and could talk for a minute. She dialed his number. He answered the phone himself not Drey. That made Olivia smile. She had wanted so much to hear his voice.

"You answered. I'm so glad you did. I've missed you."

'I've missed you too Sweet Baby. How has your day been?"

"I just left the Bostonian. I spent the afternoon with my mother. Uncle Jim joined us for brunch. It was nice. They were both very animated and friendly but Fitz, I saw whatever it was that you saw the other day. It was there between them. It wasn't just a glad to be friends again vibe. I think they tried to hide it but they couldn't. It was like if I wasn't there, there wouldn't be so much as a chair between them. I don't know what to say."

"There's nothing you need to say Olivia. What there is to be said will eventually come from your mother and Uncle Jim. They are after all grown-ups."

"You're right of course. I can't imagine what my father will think of such a thing. Mother and Uncle Jim, it doesn't seem real."

"No, it doesn't. We'll talk about it when I see you. I don't feel like there's a cause for alarm. Relationships are formed. Your father maybe upset but he has no say in the matter. Your mother is no longer his wife. She's free to establish new relationships."

"You're right. I'm probably making this into more than it is. Let's talk about us. I can't believe that Saturday is fast approaching. We'll move into our first home. I'm so excited Fitz. Saturday morning can't get here quick enough. Are you excited as I am?"

"Probably more my love. Moving into our first home as a couple. I can't wait to carry you over the threshold. I intend for it to become a tradition with us. We have quite a few homes you know. And you my beautiful wife-to-be are mistress of them all!"

"We do have so much to be grateful for. We're together and so happy; let's assume it's contagious. If my mother and Uncle Jim have decided to hook up it might be a good thing. My mother deserves a man that will love and cherish her. Perhaps my godfather is that man."

"Perhaps he is. What time will you leave for the hospital tonight?"

"I leave the condo at six-thirty. I'm on my way there now. I plan to get a nap if I can. I miss you so much. I wish you were here, with me. I wish you were here to hold me, to touch me. The way only you can."

"Soon my darling, Livvy. I promise I will be there. Are you sure you're alright?"

"I'm fine. I know you just left but Friday seems so far away. I'm missing you is all. Plus, I'm still getting accustomed to life as an intern. It's a titillating experience. Nights in the ED are exactly what I expected. They're all night affairs."

"I heard that. I miss you too. So very much. Go home and get your nap Olivia. I'll await your eleven o'clock call. I love you."

"I love you more, bye."

He didn't tell her he was about to land at Logan. Tomorrow morning when she returned home, he would surprise her! Right now, he was going straight to the Bostonian to talk to Tessa and Uncle Jim. He had made a decision. He wanted them to know he'd made it. He didn't believe in hanging chads. He was a straight forward guy that didn't beat around the bush. He wouldn't lie to Olivia about what he knew. Sometime tomorrow they would talk. He was going to tell Olivia the truth.

He understood perfectly well why Tessa felt the need to tell Olivia the news herself. This lie by omission was Tessa's personal failure. It was a wrong she now felt compelled to right. She'd told James Lockheed the truth now Olivia needed to be told. Unfortunately, this was something that should've been done years ago. Like when Olivia was old enough to understand. If not then, surely at eighteen. He would love to give Tessa the opportunity to tell Olivia herself but he'd made a promise to Olivia. No lies. Not even by omission.

He had been picked up at the airport and was now on his way to the Bostonian. Tessa and James Lockheed were Olivia's parents. They would be his family from now to eternity. He wanted a working relationship with then. They had spoken by phone but he felt that a face to face was necessary. If there was going to be an issue with the way he planned to go forward he was hoping that it could be ironed out.

"Good evening, Fitz. It's good to see you."

"I'm pleased to know that. How about Tessa? Are those her sentiments as well?"

"Look, Tessa and I talked this out prior to telling you the truth. I told her if she was concerned about you discussing it with Olivia before she told her herself, then she shouldn't tell you. It was her call. It was the right call in my opinion. She wanted you to be there for Olivia so she confided in you. I'm not surprised to see you here. Come in."

"I know Olivia just left here. I plan to surprise her with my visit. I just spoke to her and I think the cat is out of the bag. Olivia has sensed that there's something between the two of you. She mentioned it on our call just now. All of this stuff has to be brought out into the open. It's the only way we can move forward. Again, I hope Tessa realizes that."

"Good evening, Fitz. I do realize that. The truth is our way forward. From the moment I told James that he was her father that has been my goal. Lord knows I don't want to hurt Olivia but I know this will. It will hurt to know that she has been lied to all of her life! I blame myself and I will suffer whatever the consequences are for my actions. As ill-advised as they seem now, I suspect I would do them again. I'm Olivia's mother and I love her. Hopefully she will remember that. I know why you are here. You plan to tell her this news yourself, do you not?"

"I'm compelled not to lie to Olivia. We've made an agreement from the first night we met that we would always be truthful with one another. You see, we've known since our first meeting that we would spend a lifetime together. I promised never to deceive her and I won't. Only thirty minutes ago Olivia spoke of you two. The three of you spent a lovely afternoon together. She has already sensed your connection. It's obviously something that the two of you can't hide. Not that you should have to.

I'm sure that you knew once I was told the truth, I would come here as soon as humanly possible. Olivia will need me with her as she absorbs your news. She's a very formidable woman. She's strong and wise beyond her years. Her beauty is uneclipsed but her intelligence is her most outstanding quality. I could never insult that intelligence by pretending not to know the truth of her parentage when I know otherwise.

I came here to let both of you know that. We are to become family. We have started out as friends. I hope we will remain so. You two will have my support going forward. I wanted you to know that whether you approve or disapprove of my stance. As the man that loves Olivia with all my heart, I'm sworn to protect her and never lie to her."

"You showing up here is a testament of your devotion to Olivia. As her father, I'm glad to see it. I'm new to fatherhood but not to the elements of loving a woman. I have loved the woman beside me for more than thirty years, Fitzgerald. There is nothing I wouldn't do to spare her unnecessary grief. Unfortunately, her actions of twenty-five years ago are back to haunt her. She realizes that. There will be little anyone can do to mitigate the fall out."

"James, you don't have to rehash this nor plead a case on my behalf. Fitz, I accept that Olivia will come to you and you will tell her the truth. Lies are what got me in this predicament. The truth will set me free. The truth will show me and James in a new light. Hopefully, Olivia will truly see us. You can and will tell her what you know when you are asked. As the man that loves her, I expect no less. I, on the hand, as her mother, is the only one that can give her all of the facts. When she turns to me for answers, I shall give them to her."

"We are in agreement then?"

"Fitz, you must do what your soul tells you is right. I can live with that. Thanks for coming by and talking to us face to face. It's an admirable quality doing the right thing. We will come to your new home on Saturday and I will learn whether or not my daughter can forgive me my sins against her. I can't say I look forward to it. I'm afraid she's going to hate me for what I've done. I'm praying to God that she won't but sometimes prayers aren't enough."

"Olivia is your daughter Tessa. In the short time that I've known her she has expressed nothing but deep love and affection for you. She was disappointed in the symbiotic relationship you shared with her father. Correction with Thomas Pope. She was hopeful that you would pull yourself out of it and you did. She's very proud of you for that. It has taken courage and determination for you to leave your abuser and carve out a new direction for yourself. I believe she will see courage in your coming forward with the truth of her parentage. Olivia's the most kind and loving person I've ever known. I think you have to trust her to work through this.

I've rearranged my schedule to be here for Olivia in whatever capacity she needs me to be once she learns the truth. I haven't any intention of leaving here until I know how she has taken the news and is adjusting to it. She's essentially in a new full-time job and must now face life-changing news. I could never let her face this alone. I know it was never your intent to tell her and rush head-on into your new lives. I admire you both for putting your concerns for Olivia first. You are welcome to stay on at the Bostonian as long as you like. I plan to be right here at Olivia's side until she tells me to go."

"I told Tessa that you would be here for our daughter. I appreciate your directness Fitzgerald. There are too many boys masquerading as men in this world. I'm pleased that our daughter hasn't chosen one. When Tessa and I stand before Olivia and tell the truth, we will seek her understanding of a set of unfortunate circumstances. As you say Olivia is a kind and loving soul. I don't believe she will forsake us. Tessa, as Fitz has said, we must trust our daughter."

"I believe you're right Uncle Jim, that's all any of us can do. I certainly appreciate the two of you listening to what I had to say and most of all seeing that I must be truthful with Olivia. I have to run. I have a meeting here at the hotel with Security. Thomas Pope is still in Boston. For some inexplicable reason he has changed his lodging. His intent, purpose, and target I suspect was and probably still remains you, Tessa. The man may be obsessed now that he truly understands that you are done with him."

"His obsession will be short-lived! I've agreed to the ruse of letting all involved believe that Tessa is staying at the condo but what does it solve? Thomas Pope is still in Boston lurking around. He must be confronted and put in his place. He has abandoned and disavowed his children. Surely, he doesn't think that he will now reclaim their mother and return to Grand Caymans in connubial bliss? He has truly lost his mind!"

"The man has been under surveillance since he landed here. He's made only that one approach to the condo. I'm sure he was surprised at what he encountered there. When and if he returns more surprises await him. I implore you not to worry about Thomas Pope. He has surely underestimated what he's up against. I really must go. What time should Olivia and I expect you guys on Saturday?"

"You guys move in on Saturday, right? Maybe Jim and I should wait until Sunday to come over. We want to give you some time to enjoy your new home together."

"Actually, I plan to surprise Olivia tomorrow morning. The penthouse is ready. When she comes in tomorrow morning that will be our last day at the condo. We'll start another phase of our lives. It was to be new day, a happy day. Unfortunately, the aura of that occasion won't last long. There's other news to be told. Olivia must be told the true nature of your relationship and the truth about her parentage. I intend to tell her and that will happen tomorrow. If you want to give her a few days to digest the news, that's up to you."

"Perhaps we should give Olivia a few days to adjust to the facts, Tessa. Even then, she might not choose to see us right away. We both know what we want to happen but that's wishful thinking. We'll await a call from either you or Olivia. Hopefully we'll hear from you before Saturday. Do you feel that's reasonable Tessa?"

"It has to be. The matter has been taken out of my control. Fitz once you've spoken to Olivia, if it should turn out that she needs or wishes to see us, please encourage her to call us. I suspect she will have many questions."

"Whatever Olivia needs to get through this, she shall have. This is all about Olivia. This is about seeing that none of her spirit is broken. This is about her knowing how much she is loved and valued. Whatever she needs, between the three of us; our main focus is to see that she gets it. I'm sure we will talk soon."

Tessa watched the man walk through the door. Even after it closed, she couldn't turn her head away. The man had swooped down into the Caribbean and taken her precious daughter. Olivia loves him and he loves Olivia. He would let nothing or no one stand between them, not even a mother. He hadn't been subtle when he inferred that yes, the news of Olivia's parentage had been hers to tell, years ago when she was a child. She was a woman grown now, his woman and he would tell her the truth. He would tell her and he would help her endure whatever emotions she felt.

She had told James that this was all about Olivia now. Fitz was right. it was all about Olivia. Her own feelings would have to take a backseat to Olivia's. She couldn't blame Fitzgerald Grant for refusing to withhold information from Olivia in order to salvage the bruised feelings of her mother. She must accept the obvious. The next time she saw Olivia, she would know the truth.

"Tessa, if I thought I could deter the man from telling her I would. He's determined not to endanger his relationship with Olivia. You must not fault him for that. The way I see it, the main culprit still remains Thomas. He forced you into a corner. You chose the only way forward that you could see. He's the main villain of this piece and when he dares to show his face around here, he's going to know that!"

"Jimmy, I thought we agreed that you wouldn't involve yourself with Thomas Pope. I don't want a confrontation between the two of you here in this country. There's no need for you to have contact with the man. I'm serious. There's a vicious mean streak in him. We are better off totally excluding him from our lives. If Olivia agrees, we should shut him out completely."

"From where I stand, that decision was made by Thomas Pope himself. He's the one that disowned his children. They were his only connection and he severed it. As for you Tessa, he shall never have access to you again."

"No, he won't! Please, let's agree to let Fitz handle this matter. For better or worse he's going to inform Olivia of your true connection. He hasn't any reason now to tolerate Thomas Pope at all and he won't. Hopefully, he will crush the man as he deserves. Fitzgerald Grant doesn't tolerate fools. And Thomas Pope is a fool. He will underestimate the American. Soon Thomas will find himself squirming under the sole of the man's expensive shoes. In the mean time we must move on with our lives. I want us to be happy Jimmy. If you wind up in an American jail cell, how can we be happy?"

"I haven't any intention of winding up in an American jail. When we return to the Caymans will be time enough to deal with Thomas. You're right about Grant and unfortunately about my old friend. That part of this equation is out of our hands. Enough about it. Let's talk of other things for now. For example, how in the hell am I supposed to keep my hands off of you for the next several weeks? Las Vegas seems farther and farther away."

"I know. Nothing is going as planned. We know what we want, but it's not in the cards. I've reluctantly accepted the fact that there won't be any intimacy at this stage of our relationship. We're waiting for marriage. You made the stipulation without my input. I promised that I wouldn't do anything to throw you off your course. So, I can't answer that question for you?"

"No, you can't. This hot and bothered situation is all on me. So, let's move on. I would love for everything to go as you had planned in reference to Olivia learning the truth. That's not going to happen. I wish things were different but it appears that the man's mind is set. Are you terribly disappointed Tessa?"

"Anxious is a better word. I envisioned simply going to Olivia and telling her the truth. I'm her mother. I had hoped she would see my side of the story and understand why I did it. Now I'm not so sure. With Fitz determined to tell her now that he knows; won't it make it worse? Won't she resent me even more?"

"Tessa, I told you that telling him would run that risk. You told him anyway. You must now live with that decision and move on. He has to tell her and I personally don't see Olivia being that upset about how and from whom she learns the truth. The problem will be why she learns it at age twenty-four! That will be the fallout. Only you can answer that question for her. Prepare yourself to answer it. Tell her the truth. That's all you can do."

"Good evening, guys. How are you enjoying your Boston assignment? Keeping tabs on a beautiful woman can't be all that hard. I'd pay real good money to have your assignment."

"We know you would Sir. How was your flight?"

"Excellent as usual. Let's get straight to the particulars. Has there been any sign of Thomas Pope here at the hotel?"

"None at all, Mr. Grant. The only contact made was at the Bealle Street condo. And so far, just on that one occasion. We've monitored his every move since then. As you were informed, he's moved to another hotel. Under his real name, same type of low-class establishment, different street address. We've been expecting him on Bealle Street but he's been a no show. And no visibility at the hospital. All is well there. I have to ask Sir. Why are you here? Operation Olivia is going well. As you know there's even an undercover team at the hospital. All aspects of her security were all worked out months ago."

"And you're all doing a great job. I needed to speak with Olivia personally. A situation has come up. It couldn't be resolved over the phone. I had to stop by to see Olivia's mother. Now, I'm off to the condo. Miss Adderley is planning to stay on a while longer at this point. The plan for her Boston security is ongoing.

By the way, I plan to move from Bealle Street into the penthouse tomorrow morning. All operations at Bealle Street will end a few days earlier. I assume that things are ready to go as the original move was scheduled for Saturday. I've decided to move things up. I believe that it will make Olivia happy. She will need a lot of joy this weekend. Were there any problems with the car or mirror that arrived from the Islands?"

"No problem, Mr. Grant. The penthouse is ready. All elements of security are already in place. The two items from the Caymans arrived and both are in excellent condition. The automobile has been inspected and registered. It's ready to be driven. I took the liberty of having an appraiser come out and evaluate the mirror. It truly is an Italian work of art, an antiquity. The dealer is going to do a protracted search on the piece. She said the mirror could possibly be traced back to royal descent. The paperwork with it is legit. I know you were concerned that Olivia's father would try to change the piece."

"The man hasn't given me any reason to trust him about anything. I'm surprised that he was being truthful. His presence here in Boston slinking about instead of showing face is an example of what we are dealing with. The man's daughter graduated with honors from one of the most prestigious medical schools in the world and he didn't show up. He's derided her for her relationship with me. The main reason being the color of my skin! The man is garbage. Olivia is much better off with him out of her life. From what I can see, the man was never much of a father to her anyway!"

"He does sound very unworthy of Miss Pope, Sir. I must say you have found yourself a very special woman. She's very devoted to you and is very kind to the staff. She fully understands the need for her protection. Unlike Margot Lily she doesn't resent the intrusion. Miss Pope understands why we are here. She's a smart humble woman. In all these months we've been guarding her, she's never said a disparaging word about anyone. I'm telling you the guys love her!"

"I'm sure they do. Olivia is very easy to love. Keep her safe. She's means everything to me. When I leave here, I rely on you and your team to safeguard her life. Please retrieve all keys and access information for the property. Olivia wants to turn the stuff over to Mr. Lockheed herself."

"That's right, he's now sole owner of the place. No problem, boss. Are you ready to go to Bealle Street? I'll drive you myself. I was only here finalizing last night's report. There's only two members assigned to the Bostonian. Once Ms. Adderley leaves, we will shut that down.

Mr. Lockheed has moved all of his belongings into the Adderley suite as of today. The lady has informed management that she could be here for another week. Is everything going as you anticipated? I know you are trying to set up and prepare long range protection extending to the Caymans for Olivia's mom. Is that still ongoing? Not that it changes anything, the woman will be protected. We now know about a connection between she and Mr. Lockheed. Can we assume that whatever there is between them, it's more than an extended weekend fling?"

"You can. I will get into the particulars of that issue later in the week. I'll have a much clearer picture myself by then. It's nothing too over the top. It's straight forward really. Let's wait until we move into the penthouse and we can talk securely and more privately."

"Sure thing Mr. Grant."

Fitz arrived at Bealle Street. He was going to miss this place. It was small and cozy. It was home. Having Olivia come home to him here had meant everything. Tomorrow they would move into the penthouse. It would be their first home researched and bought together. Would Olivia have picked a twenty-five-million-dollar penthouse without his mother's influence? He doubted it.

Olivia had lived a privileged life in the Caymans but it was nothing like what she was about to experience. He wanted to pamper her constantly and excessively. She deserved no less as his fiancée and wife to be. Most of all he loved her and wanted her to be happy. If she were happy, he would be happy and all would turn out well for them.

He was told that Olivia had left for the hospital at the usual time. Nothing unusual had occurred at the residence. Thomas Pope hadn't shown up again. Nor had he called. He was however still in Boston. To be honest Fitz was surprised he was still in town especially since he hadn't made another attempt to see Tessa. However, a man like Pope was still here for a reason. He intended to find out why. Perhaps a trip to the Paul Revere Inn was in order.

He wanted go over to the penthouse for a final inspection. He and Olivia had done a walk-thru last week and she was happy with everything. A partial staff had been in place then. The full staff was now in place and anticipating their arrival. They would arrive on tomorrow. He was excited and happy but knowing what he had to discuss with Olivia at some point filled his entire being with dread. No way could he go into this weekend letting Olivia be blindsided by news he already knew. He couldn't do that! If Olivia was to love and trust him completely, they couldn't have lies between them.

On some levels he felt bad for Tessa. It was her story to tell, but it should've been told years ago. He was praying that Olivia would accept the news as a matter of fact and be ready to move forward in spite of it. His job was to make sure she was alright. This was heavy news for anyone to learn. Even a brilliant first-year medical resident would find it hard. For twenty-four years Olivia's entire life had been a lie. His heart was already hurting for her.

The butler, the housekeeper, and upper echelon of the penthouse staff greeted him as he walked through the elevator doors. He and Gino had parted ways down stairs. Only he and Olivia entered through the penthouse elevator. One day soon he would introduce Olivia to the intricacies of making love in an elevator.

"Good evening, Bentley and Mrs. Livingstone. I know Olivia and I weren't expected to move in until this weekend. We changed our plans. Good to see you again. And how thoughtful of you to assemble the staff this way. Bentley, you may introduce any I haven't met."

Surprisingly a vast portion of the staff was still present in preparation for this weekend. The under butler, the assistant housekeeper, the head chef amongst others. Bentley the epitome of an English butler assigned a face to each name. Fitz greeted each one personally and as they would learn over time, Mr. Grant rarely forgot a name or a face. The penthouse looked great reminding him of his home in New York City. Little touches of Olivia were strewn throughout the place.

He wanted to see if Nana's mirror had been set up as he specified. The mirror confiscated from Thomas Pope for a small fortune would be worth every penny to see Olivia's face light up with joy. Her PT cruiser was now housed in the garage and at her disposal. Those two things had special meaning for Olivia. Once again Thomas Pope thought to deny his daughter happiness.

The man was a menace. Deep in his heart Fitz was grateful that not a drop of Pope blood would ever flow through a child of his! Olivia would need time to adjust to the fact of the man not being her real father. He had no such qualms. Thomas Pope would never again receive so much as a courteous 'Good Morning' from him. The man was persona non grata, unwelcome in all aspects of his life. He was hoping and praying that Olivia would see that the man was totally unworthy to be involved with any facet of hers.

Telling her the truth about the man had to be done and he would see to it tomorrow as soon as he could. Even now the thought of bringing pain upon her was squeezing at his own heart. They would get through this, hopefully unscathed. He walked into Olivia's sitting room. Her grandmother's mirror was in the room placed where he believed she would want it.

They both had sitting rooms on adjacent ends of their massive master suite. There was one enormous closet divided into his and her sections. The place was huge and simply gorgeous. It was actually toned down but it spoke of extreme wealth. Fitz was very pleased with it. He and Olivia had bought this place and every piece of furniture themselves with few exceptions. When they moved in tomorrow, they would begin turning it into a home.

He had ended his visit in the Security wing. There wasn't anything unusual about the setup. It was standard in all the Grant homes. He had some questions about security for Olivia while she was at the hospital. He was satisfied with the answers. He headed back to Cambridge for his last night there. Olivia would be calling in an hour or so. He was going to get a shower and wait for her call.

Fitz had just stepped out of the shower when his phone rang. It was Security. He answered the phone.

"What's up?"

"Mr. Grant, Thomas Pope has just driven through the gate using Miss Pope's key code. You asked us not to change the code and we haven't. We can intercept him and send him on his way. I haven't a doubt that he plans another attempt to get to his ex-wife. At this hour he surely knows that his daughter is at Mass General. What do you want done Sir?"

"Please allow Dr. Pope to return to the condo. I will handle this directly."

"Sir, we are perfectly capable of handling this for you. We can make it very plain that he's not to return to this location. We won't be as polite as we were the first time."

"No, allow him to come directly here. That way we'll have no future misunderstandings. How soon will he be here?"

"In about five, Sir. You're sure you don't want any involvement from Security?"

"Quite sure!"

Fitz dried off quickly and pulled on some jeans and a polo. This was another reason he was glad he was able to be here for two weeks. He suspected Pope would return here hoping to find Tessa alone. The man was devious. He wanted him out of their lives. Pope had banished his daughter from his little kingdom and now he was about to be excluded from his. He quickly brushed his teeth and ran a comb through his wet hair. He was hardly trying to impress the man. He was informed that Pope was approaching the condo.

"Lenny and I are on the way up from the basement Sir. I wanted you to know that we're here if you need us. We'll hang out in the library."

"You may come on up but I'll be handling Dr. Pope myself."

The door bell sounded. Fitz walked through the foyer to the door. He peeked through the peephole and there he was. The fool held a cheap bouquet of flowers in his hands. He really thought to insinuate his way back into Tessa's life. Uncle Jim would see to that not happening. The man intended to have her for himself!

Pope was dressed like it was ten below zero. The Boston nights were still cold. Tonight, there was notable wind mixed with a sleety rain. That made it feel much colder than it actually was. He decided to let the man stand there and feel the Boston chill for several minutes before he opened the door. Finally, he did. He opened the huge steel door and barely opened the storm door.

"Hello Dr. Pope, how can I help you?" The man appeared tongue-tied. His mouth hung agape.

"Dr. Pope, how can I help you?"

"Wh, wh, what are you doing here Grant?"

"I live here. The question is what are doing here?"

"I'm here to see my wife, Tessa. Haven't you any of those Hollywood manners? It's like the North Pole out here."

Fitz widened the door, stepped back and motioned the man inside.

"I do have those Hollywood manners ingrained in me. Come in. Get out of the weather."

Thomas Pope stepped into the foyer and Fitz closed the doors.

"As I said, I'm here to see my wife. I wish to see her at once. Please inform her that I'm here."

"There are two things wrong with your request Dr. Pope. Number one, Tessa Adderley is no longer your wife. Number two, she isn't here. So, I'm afraid your little meet and greet is canceled."

"Where is she then? She was to stay here a week following Olivia's graduation. She told me that herself. You have no idea what's going on between me and my wife. We have unfinished business. Tessa and I had spoken of a possible reconciliation that would start here in the states. It was to be a surprise for Olivia to see her parents begin to reconcile. Where is Tessa this time of night? I know that Olivia is working. Where is my wife?"

The man was lying through his teeth. What a fucking manipulator! He actually thought to sell that lying garbage to him. There weren't any plans to reconcile. The man was a bald-faced liar!

"As I said Tessa isn't here but I'm glad you stopped by. We need to get a few things straight. Things aren't as clear as I thought. This would be a perfect time to make sure that everything is crystal. I wouldn't want you to make the mistake of showing up here or any other place where you aren't welcome."

"What do you mean? Olivia is my daughter. I have every right to visit her. Just because you're in her life you don't dictate to me. Tessa would want to see me if she were here. We were in talks…"

"You lying bastard! Tessa Adderley is done with you and you know it. She divorced you without preamble. You think I don't know how you treated the woman for years. You mentally and physically abused her. Did you think Olivia wouldn't tell me? Do you think that I don't know how you have disowned Olivia because of her association with me? Do you think that I don't know that you refer to your grandchildren as half-breed mongrels? You are unmitigated scum Thomas Pope. You know it and I know it.

I once told you that I protect what's mine. Olivia is mine! She's mine to have and hold. She's mine to love and protect. Her mother falls under my care and protection. You have banished Olivia from your life. You refused to even attend her graduation as some sort of sick revenge for not doing your bidding. You've shown your true colors but I'm glad that you have because now I can protect Olivia from you without thought or reservation. Again, my care and devotion of Olivia extends to her mother. Tessa Adderley is under my protection, and she will never be under your thumb again."

"How dare you talk to me this way! Who the hell do you think you are? Just because you are fucking my daughter doesn't give you rights over me. I'll see my wife when and where I want to!"

"No, you won't! I will personally see that you won't! Watch your mouth Dr. Pope! You should be very careful about the way you classify my relationship with Olivia. I want an excuse to punch you in the goddamn face!"

"You Americans are such ruffians always ready to manhandle someone. Why should I bite my tongue about the relationship? You are fucking her right?"

"Every chance I get, not that it's your damn business. Let me make something clear to you. You are done harassing and intimidating Olivia and her mother. Leave them the hell alone or I will crush you. I know things about you Dr. Pope. Things that you believe are swept under a rug. They're not! I can and will have them re-examined, rehashed, re-evaluated by a simple nod of my head! I may even see fit to expose and announce them all over the Caribbean.

You are a disgusting man, Thomas Pope. Don't play with me. You wanted Olivia out of your life because she chose me. Tessa wanted you out of her life because she deserves better than you. She divorced you for one reason or a number of reasons. It doesn't really matter. What matters is that you stay away from her and my future wife, unless for some reason they make it known that they wish to see you. I assure you that I'm not making idle threats Dr. Pope. I'm making a promise. Your life will become a living hell on earth if you choose to squabble with me and mine!

Go quietly into the night. Go home and re-evaluate your life. Determine how you want to live the rest of it. Find you another woman that will tolerate your shit. Tessa Adderley is off your list. Stay away from Olivia. If you dare to do one more thing to hurt her; you will regret the day you were born!"

"How dare you threaten me over my own daughter and wife! You're one malicious son of a bitch. Olivia thinks you're some sort of white knight that's come to rescue her. What you are is a very rich man that thinks he rules the world. I don't have to listen to your shitty advice. You haven't any authority over me here nor in the Caymans. Stick to plunging your rod into my daughter. Apparently, it's what you do well!"

Within seconds Fitz had the man jacked up against the foyer wall. His forearm was pressed into the man's throat. The manuever didn't prohibit breathing but it did lessen oxygen supply. Thomas Pope's eyes bulged as he gasped for breath. Fitz was so angry with this foolish man. He could exert the correct amount of pressure against the man's trachea and do the entire fucking world a favor or he could remain civilized.

Fitz backed off. The man immediately fell to the floor gulping in precious air. Thomas Pope looked up at Grant. He paled. If looks could kill he would be dead. He didn't dare say anything to further anger the man. He wanted to leave this place alive!

"You piece of vermin! You should believe me when I say this is your last warning. Unless Olivia approaches you stay away from her. And if you dare to speak of her as you did minutes ago, I promise you that you'll regret it. I also remind you once again that Olivia's family is my family. They are under my protection. Her family here in Boston, in Arizona, in the Grand Caymans; everywhere in the world where my security forces exist, they are protected! Remember that when you have the audacity to believe no one is watching you."

Fitz reached into his jacket and took out his phone. He hit a number and waited for a response.

"Mr. Harmon would you please bring up a copy of the file that details the movement of Thomas Pope for the last three weeks. Also bring me the folder from the safe labeled with his name and the great state of Tennessee. Yes, that would be the one."

Thomas Pope's mouth went dry. His tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth! He tried to make his mouth work but it wouldn't. His entire being filled with dread! Would Fitzgerald Grant be able to delve into his past? Could he produce sealed records of the criminal proceedings filed against him all those years ago? Would he use those records to ruin his life? Of course he could! Money could make just about anything happen. It had been money that had saved his ass back in the day. Now the money of this mega rich man could be used to destroy him, his legacy! Finally, his body began to produce saliva again. Also, his breathing began to even out.

Fitzgerald was staring at him waiting for him to utter back some salvo. He wanted him to malign Olivia once more. If he did, he was going to beat the man to a pulp. It was time for him to finally have some accountability assigned to his actions. Fitz had it swirling in his head, the talks he and Olivia had shared about their upbringings. His had been filled with love and joy. Olivia's had been shrouded in intimidation and fear because of this man. My god, he wanted to maul him for causing Olivia one day of fear and hurt! He was her father for god's sake, or so the man had assumed. The goddamned fool was supposed to love and protect her.

Fear reeked from the body of Thomas Pope. The man knew that he was on perilous terrain. Grant wanted to stomp him into the ground. It was now clear to him that Grant was ensconced in this place and so were his goons. However, he wasn't going to sic them on him. Grant fought his own battles and he made exacting revenge personal. He had taken total possession of Olivia and he was daring him to say he did not! The man wanted to hurt him. Wisely, he kept his mouth shut!

"Thank-you, Mr. Harmon."

"Did you need any other assistance Mr. Grant? I thought I heard raised voices."

"No this is a personal matter. I intend to take care of it myself. If I should need you further, I'll call you. Good night.

Mr. Harmon looked at the man standing in the foyer opposite his boss with an air of disgust. The big burly man looked as if he broke bones for a living. Thomas Pope suspected that he did. The man silently disappeared from the room but Thomas knew he was still there somewhere. Apparently, his daughter's choice was much more than a mega rich international playboy. He had underestimated Fitzgerald Grant in many ways. Even that bitch that had called him from New York had been menacing. She had spoken and negotiated with him about Olivia's car and his mother's mirror like a man. For Olivia's sake he hoped that she knew what she was getting into. Thomas Pope chose the next words out of his mouth very carefully.

"Look Grant, I'm an imperfect man. I'm from a different world and culture than you. Things are done differently in the Caymans, in the Caribbean really."

"Let me stop you right there. Honesty, decency, and faithfulness to ones' spouse is a path followed all over the world. It's up to each man and woman of the world as to what path they take. We all know your path and it can't be sugarcoated. You're an adulterer, a tyrant and an abuser of women and children. Deny it all you want but truth and clarity say otherwise."

"No matter how you have envisioned me all is not as it seems. I may not have been a faithful husband but I have provided for my wife and my family the very best lives in the world. Tommy and Olivia grew up in the best neighborhoods and attended the best schools in the Caribbean. They matriculated at the best universities here in the United States of America. I saw to that personally. Because of my generosity they wanted for nothing. No matter what you may think of me, I love my children.

As a father and the man that raised them from birth can't I be disappointed that they chose partners outside of their race. I know you assume I'm a racist…"

"You are a racist Dr. Pope. You refuse to acknowledge your own biracial grandchildren. You're a disgrace. I promise you that you will never have the opportunity to treat any child of mine the way you have treated Tommy's. Please step down from your soapbox. Rest assured that these files in my hand aren't the only two I can produce. I'm disappointed that you are the man that raised Olivia. But our disappointments aren't the issue.

I know the type of man that you are. You and you alone turned Olivia from her home and said she was dead to you. You failed to show up to one of the most important events in her life. Yet, you are slinking around Boston claiming there's some type of bond between your ex-wife. You are a bald-faced liar. The woman has divorced you and wants absolutely nothing to do with you. She doesn't want to see you nor does she wish to speak to you. Save your lies for someone unaware of the truth!"

"You don't understand how it is to be disappointed by ones' family. I have a right to expect something in return for all that I have sacrificed for them. My family lived amongst the elite of the Grand Caymans Islands. The people there are revered of me. I have their devotion and respect. I deserved the same thing from my family."

"Dr. Pope, this conversation has become tedious. You need to return to the Caymans. If you wish to remain revered and showered with devotion and respect, you will cease with this quest you are on with your ex-wife. She has made it plain that she wishes to sever ties with you. I won't tolerate you harassing her. I won't tolerate your crass talk about my fiancé. Strike their names from your vile vocabulary. Cease your plans to hunt Tessa down or I will bring you down Dr. Pope. I will bring you down so low to the ground you cannot get up! Trust me when I say that you don't want to tangle with me. I chew small incessant men like yourself up for breakfast and spit them out at lunch.

This is my second and last warning to you. I protect what is mine and everything that is within that realm. That includes my wife-to-be and her mother. Return to the Caribbean Dr. Pope and find meaning in your life there. It's your best course of action."

"You won't hear me out will you nor will you listen to reason? You want me to give up my family."

"You destroyed your family. No one but you. Please don't try and lay your hard-earned fate at my feet. You alienated your children! You abused your wife! We are done here. It's entirely possible that you and I will meet again, after all you have a connection to Olivia. Honestly, I hope we don't. The sight of you sickens me."

Fitz walked to the door and opened it. He looked at the weasel of a man and shook his head toward the door.

"Please get out. And if you're smart, you'll go home and concentrate on becoming a better man."

Pope walked through the door without a word. He didn't look back. Fitz closed the door. He shook his head. The man had allowed, greed, narcissism, the constant need for sexual gratification, and male entitlement ruin his life. Sadly, Fitz didn't believe the man had the will or the common sense to follow his advice. Without a doubt he would intrude upon the continuity of his family, and he would have to destroy him!

"Guys that fool is gone. Let me know exactly what his movements are until he gets on plane headed back to the Caymans. If he shows up within two-hundred feet of this place or the penthouse, I expect to know immediately. The man has been warned and advised. If for some reason he doesn't understand English I need to know."

"Sure thing. He's being tailed as we speak. Do you need anything else Sir?"

"No, I'm good. Have you all had dinner? I'm thinking to fix a bite to eat and wait for Olivia's call."

"We're good Mr. Grant. Have a good evening."

The encounter with Thomas Pope still had his blood boiling. He needed a drink but he didn't drink on a mostly empty stomach. The salad he had on the plane was a simple one with fresh veggies and a small amount of protein. Even though it was getting late he wanted something tasty and filling. Also, his sweet tooth had kicked it. Olivia rarely cooked and she wasn't expecting him. It was very unlikely that he would find a special treat for him in the frig. Sometimes she surprised him decadent sweets. He would've loved to have an enormous piece of strawberry shortcake from Nellie's Sweet Spot.

Too late for that. He went into the kitchen to see what he could find. He opened the frig. A steak and potatoes would hit the spot but his porterhouse steaks as well as the chicken and seafood had been transferred to the condo. There were eggs and some fresh veggies in the frig but he wasn't feeling an omelet tonight. He closed the refrigerator.

He thought about the security guys in the basement. Olivia often talked about how they all ate together and how she even joined them sometimes at dinner time before she started at Mass General. What had they eaten tonight? They would also know if he could find anything to eat this time of night. He picked up the phone.

"Hello. I know it's late but I'm hungry. Is there anything open this late around here?"

"Do you like Chinese? There's this excellent place near the mall. We get take-out their all the time. The owner is a spice master and the food is authentic Mandarin. And there's a greasy spoon that's open. The fried chicken makes you want to cluck but the rest of the menu is truly made with a greasy spoon. There's Pizza Hut but it's a bit greasy too. The vegan hangout is closed and so is the Mexican place. I know you don't ordinarily eat McDonalds or Burger King, right?

"Right. I could do Mandarin."

"I'll be right up with the menu Boss."

Fitz had just finished the most delicious Szechuan Beef ever. New York City had some of the best Chinese food in the world but this was superb. The chiles were hot and paired just right with meat. He'd ordered a side of fresh broccoli and shitake mushroom instead of rice. He was currently devouring some mango pudding. Having never had it before he was skeptical. It had been highly recommended by the guys. They were right! This stuff was delicious! It teased the palate after the fieriness of the beef. Most importantly it satisfied his sweet tooth. After talking to Olivia, he was going to do an abbreviated work-out and hit the sack. It had been a long day.

She called shortly after eleven. It made him happy to her voice. He'd left her two days ago but this new revelation had thrown him off. Trying to imagine how the news was going to affect Olivia was foremost in his thoughts. If they had been an ordinary couple and their lives not so involved at the moment, he would have the jet ready to fly them to some romantic island. Maybe to the family home in Sicily. It would be beautiful this time of year. But they weren't ordinary, far from it.

"Hello, Sweet Baby. How much time do you have?"

"Hi Babe, maybe ten minutes. How was your day?"

"It was tolerable. A lot was going on. What about yours?"

"It was the best yet. I've spoken to you about clinical rotations. You know how excited I was during Obstetrics. Well today I was more than a casual bystander high up in the medical theater watching a live birth. I participated in the birth of a child, Fitz. The opportunity presented itself at the ED. I was up close and personal. It's an amazing process. I can't explain all the feelings that engulfed me when that tiny life filled its lungs and cried. It brought me back to the vision I saw. Our baby Fitz. It seems so wrong for you to have to wait for your dreams to come true while all of mine are coming to fruition. I know how much you want children. I want them too! I want our babies!"

"Olivia, don't let this weigh on your mind. You helped bring a life into this world. It had to be gratifying. It's sparked a lot of emotions in you. I think I understand the most it. We're in love obviously. Our individual happiness is important to both of us. I would do anything in this world to make you happy. You know this because I spend every single day trying to make sure that you know how much I love you. And you do the same Olivia. You do. Every. Single. Day. I feel your love for me through your words and your actions. A child is a gift. Our children will be gifts to each other. Gifts of love, made by us, when we are ready. Ready, is the optimum word.

We are concentrating on dreams right now, your dreams Olivia. I insist that they come first. I promised you that, remember? Love me! Marry me! Know that you are making my dreams come true too. Give me the precious gift of children when your dreams are met."

"God, I love you so much. What would I have done if you had not shown up in the Caymans and swept me off my feet? You are my own personal knight. You bring out all of the goodness me. You make me so happy with just a few words. I miss you Fitz. I can't wait until this weekend. We start another remarkable journey. Penthouse here we come! Are you as excited as I am? Our first home as a committed couple. We get to christen it right? Where in the world will we make love first? It's huge! I know you Fitz. Our first time in the penthouse is going to be remarkable. Dammit! I have got to go. I must get back. I love you more than anything Fitz. Bye."

"I love you more, Olivia. Bye.

She hadn't face timed today. He suspected he knew why. They could read so much in each other's eyes. Olivia was so expressive. Joy and sorrow emanated from her so easily. The sorrow on their faces from a simple goodbye could mean a sad day. Being in love was joyful and exciting but there was the down side of departure and just saying goodbye. When there was emotional upheaval within Olivia, it would show first in her eyes! Her eyes told the story. They were windows to her soul. She was hiding!

The two of them were soulmates that at times saw into the mind of the other. They closed their eyes and they could see and feel things. Olivia had things on her mind. Tomorrow would be early enough to get her to speak of her worries. Right now, he had closed his eyes and there was Olivia holding a baby with eyes like his. He sighed and he smiled. No matter what was swirling in either of their heads. There was their future, the two of them and a family. God he loved her! There would never, ever not be a time that he wasn't consumed with Olivia Pope. They were never going to be over not in a million years!
