Olivia woke on the morning that marked the start of her eighth month of pregnancy with a wave of excitement. As always, her first instinct after caressing the bump where her daughter lay waiting to enter the world was to seek out her partner. Finding Elliot's space on the sofa that had become his bed unoccupied, and the bathroom door in her room open, it didn't take any of Olivia's detective skills to figure out that her partner had gone down for his morning cup of coffee. Even after all this time, Elliot still insisted on not having his own caffeine habit interfere with Olivia's restrictions – not that she would have noticed today.

If all went according to plan, and clearances were received from both Dr. Adelman and the physical therapy department – Kara in particular – Olivia would be discharged from her current residence on the long term wing of the hospital. While she wouldn't be going home, exactly, it would allow her to be transferred to the maternity floor, and into a spacious suite where she could prepare to bring Hope Eloise Benson-Stabler into the world. Having already seen photos of what her new room would look like, Olivia was most excited for the opportunity to sleep in the closest thing to a real bed that she had seen in months. Even better, Dr. Barrett had personally arranged for a double size model to be moved into her suite, knowing that Elliot had no intention of going anywhere. Apparently it was a common courtesy for couples who spent a great deal of time on the maternity ward, to allow them to be as close as possible.

Carefully getting to her feet, Olivia slowly but surely made her way to the bathroom. As her health had continued to improve, the medical equipment that surrounded her had gradually decreased. Free from IV lines and the constant monitoring she had initially woken up to, she welcomed the freedom of movement that she had been granted. Although, the more her daughter grew, the more difficult that chore become. Even despite the challenges, Olivia welcomed them. Her heart still ached for the experiences of her pregnancy that she had missed while in the coma, and no matter how uncomfortable the late stage symptoms made her feel, she had promised herself she would never complain. She was too full of gratitude to be anything but happy.

Olivia was just on her way back to bed when Elliot was coming through the door, and she couldn't help but chuckle at his instant concern and the way he rushed to her side to help. She wasn't mocking his care for her, but rather the words that happened to come out of her partner's mouth.

"Liv, you should have waited. I would have helped."

"El, our Peanut is using my bladder as a trampoline, and you expect me to wait to pee? Not to mention the fact that I just woke up after sleeping for several hours? Could you wait?"

Pressing a soft kiss to Olivia's lips as a means of apology, Elliot was quick to make amends.

"Point taken. I promise I'll try to not be as much of a basket case by the time you go into labor."

"I'm going to hold you to that."

After helping Olivia back into bed, Elliot headed into the bathroom she had just vacated. Breakfast would be due to arrive within the hour, and with any luck, the doctor's rounds that followed would give them the news that they both wanted to hear.

"I probably should have asked you this before I helped you back into bed, but were you wanting to shower before or after breakfast today?"

Olivia's face took on a thoughtful expression as she considered the question Elliot had put forth to her. That had been another recent development as her recovery had improved – the ability to care for her own hygiene, albeit with her partner's help.

"Before, I think. And as much as I love it when we get distracted when you join me, I'm going to need you to keep your hands mostly to yourself this time. I can't be having my hormones in overdrive and unable to concentrate when I'm needing to be focused on whether or not I can be moved off this floor."

"Noted. How about I promise to make it up to you later?"

"I like the sound of that."

While there was no doubt that Olivia lamented the parts of her pregnancy that she had missed while in her coma, she was immensely grateful that she hadn't entirely lost out on the part that gifted her with a libido in overdrive. Granted, her current situation in the hospital made it difficult to satiate those desires as much as she would have liked, but she had found that Elliot was more than creative in helping her out in her time of need. Obviously, the more adventurous aspects had happened only after they had received the okay from both Dr. Adelman and Dr. Barrett, but once all the restrictions of physical activity had been lifted, all bets were off. More often than not, they found their times of privacy together during Olivia's morning or nightly showers the best for engaging in intimacy, but as long as Elliot could guarantee they wouldn't be interrupted, he would do anything in his power to appease Olivia's needs – most often at the expense of his own.

In what was a very difficult decision, Olivia elected to get ready for the day alone. Not to be pushed away entirely, Elliot insisted on remaining on standby – for both moral support and to offer a helping hand when necessary. After she was done with her shower, he lovingly dried her hair and helped her get dressed, yet another amazing development that had occurred in recent weeks and something that made Olivia emotional anytime she thought about it.

Pulled into the memory, Olivia didn't think she'd ever forget the day a few short weeks ago when her doctors had told her that the hospital gown was no longer a necessity. Of course, she had been grateful, but it had also presented a new dilemma, as given everything she had been through, she had absolutely no maternity clothes to wear. That was when Kathy Stabler had swooped in, a veritable hero without a cape. The woman had come in for a visit, with not only the knowledge of her own pregnancies and what would be most comfortable, but also a fabric measuring tape to help easily determine what sizes she needed to purchase. Armed with Elliot's credit card, Kathy had gone shopping to get the essentials and returned to the hospital a few short hours later with a brand new wardrobe for Olivia.

That wasn't the only shopping that had been done recently. Not long after they had designed the nursery together, Olivia and Elliot had gone on another online spree to find some other necessary items for Hope. Elliot's biggest surprise was just waiting on what they would hear in just a few short hours, and if all went according to plan, then he would put the wheels in motion to arrange for Olivia to have her baby shower right here in one of the conference rooms at the hospital. Their friends had already been working behind the scenes on some of the finer details, all they needed now was to get the ultimate approval.

The maternity suite Olivia had been moved to hadn't done the photos she had seen justice. So much larger than a traditional hospital room - and that was saying something considering how spacious the one was she had just been transferred from – Olivia reasoned that it was even bigger than the very first studio apartment she'd ever had when she'd begun living on her own after moving away from her mother's influence. By far, the best feature had to be the bed big enough for two, and Olivia was grateful for the opportunity for a real mattress not only for herself, but for Elliot as well. Even though her partner had not uttered a solitary complaint since he'd begun staying with her at the hospital on a more permanent basis, she could only imagine how uncomfortable that sofa he had been sleeping on must have been. Not to mention, the prospect of spending her nights cuddled up next to the man she loved as they awaited the arrival of their daughter was a pleasant one.

However, as much as she wanted to explore her new surroundings, first on the list of activities for Olivia – at least according to the insistence of her brain and body – was a nap. She couldn't deny herself the luxury, as growing a tiny human was hard work indeed, and she knew she needed to do whatever was necessary to take care of herself. The last thing she wanted was to crawl into that big bed all alone, but not long after getting settled, Elliot had slipped away on a mysterious project. Naturally, Olivia was suspicious, but logic dictated that her partner couldn't get up to too much trouble. She reasoned that his evasiveness likely had something to do with their new apartment and ensuring that the nursery was ready for when they brought Hope home.

As soon as she found as comfortable a position as her body would allow, and her head hit the pillow, it didn't take long for Olivia to fall asleep. Exhaustion was the one constant of her late stage pregnancy that was all too familiar. Frequent naps helped, but even with having been awake for several weeks, nothing had really lessened the anxiety after having spent so much time in a coma. Despite all the reassurances from her doctors, there was a part of Olivia that was terrified that it would happen again, and it made her fearful to want to sleep for too long sometimes, even when her body desperately needed the rest. Elliot's presence usually put her at ease, but she would never fault him for wanting to take time to himself.

Unfortunately, Olivia's slumber wasn't as restful as she would have liked. It wasn't discomfort that woke her, but rather an intense craving. Considering she wasn't on any dietary restrictions, she didn't hesitate to text her partner. Olivia may not know where Elliot was at the moment, but she knew that as soon as she voiced her request, he would make sure that upon his return to the hospital, it would be with buffalo wings in hand. For a woman who typically avoided fried foods in lieu of more healthy options, Olivia had certainly desired more than her fair share of late. A part of her couldn't help but wonder if that was the pregnancy talking, or if somehow their little Peanut had inherited her father's eating habits and was already making them known.

Wide awake now, Olivia propped herself up in bed. She was too restless to read or watch television, but couldn't stop looking around her new room. One particular object that was tucked in an alcove had specifically captured her attention, and that was the delivery table. While she didn't have need of the item in question as of yet, it helped to have it visible, in order to get accustomed to its presence so it wouldn't be so daunting or intimidating when the time came. Olivia was also comforted by the fact that aside from having to shift her location only slightly, she wouldn't need to leave the sanctuary she had been given to give birth.

A chime from her phone pulled Olivia from her wayward thoughts, and a glance at the display told her that her earlier message had not only been received, but her request had been granted. Elliot was on his way back to the hospital, and had just stopped to pick up the food that she had asked for – and apparently an additional surprise as well.

Getting out of bed, Olivia made her way over to the table in the room, which in lieu of traditional straight backed chairs, featured more comfortable ones to sit in. She also found something on the television, that while she didn't necessarily plan on watching actively, would do nicely in terms of providing background noise.

Propping her feet up, Olivia cracked open the book she had been reading – something she had begun a long time ago, but had only started up again recently. It was the pregnancy classic What To Expect When You're Expecting, and had been one of the few recommendations she had received during one of her rare checkups in Oregon. The information provided was more than valuable, and now that she was getting even closer to her due date, Olivia wanted to surround herself with as much knowledge as she could.

Not entirely sure how long she had been immersed in the material, Olivia was able to smell Elliot's approach before she could even see him. The tantalizing aroma of hot sauce had reached her nostrils, and it was not lost on her the way all of her senses had been heightened. It was so incredibly fascinating, and thankfully most of what she'd experienced in the olfactory sense had been pleasant and not offensive.

"Hey, Liv. Sorry I was away for so long. But fear not, I come bearing what you've asked for – with a little something extra."

After Elliot had set the bag in his hands down on the table, Olivia greeted him with a kiss, remembering that he wouldn't want her to get up unnecessarily, and grateful when he bent at the waist to meet her halfway.

"You've certainly got my attention, El. I'm not going to lie, I could smell the buffalo sauce before you even got here."

"Why am I not surprised? Anyway, I know how you feel about eating messy foods right now, so I went ahead and ordered you the boneless wings, to make them easier to handle. Also, I figured since you were already on a spice kick, you might also appreciate something gooey and cheesy to go along with it, so I added a side of fried hot pepper cheese balls."

There was no containing Olivia's smile.

"You know me so well. Did you remember the -"

"There is plenty of extra ranch, and I even made sure they included carrot sticks instead of celery."

Feeling incredibly spoiled and pampered – not to mention hungry, Olivia couldn't resist digging into the bag. Much to her relief, Elliot had also brought back something for himself as well, as she always felt guilty about eating in front of him. Knowing she wouldn't be the only one indulging made her feel better, and Olivia didn't hesitate to dive into the spicy fried goodness in front of her, feeling her tastebuds explode as her craving was satiated.

A few hours later, when both Olivia and Elliot had changed into pajamas for the night and were making themselves comfortable, the pair settled into the same bed for the first time since that fateful night they had conceived their daughter. Though neither were ready for sleep, it felt good to be lying so close to one another, and each was comforted by the other's proximity. Knowing that the following day was Saturday, Olivia didn't have too much planned, but something told her that her partner had something up his sleeve. His next words further proved her theory.

"Well, if it's okay with you – because you know I can always change things – Kathy and the girls were going to stop by late in the morning to visit. Then, I spoke with Dr. Barrett today, and she said it would be all right if I took you off the floor for a bit. So if you're feeling up to it, I thought maybe we could go sit in the garden, and get a change of scenery."

"I would love that."

Relieved that Olivia wasn't in the least bit suspicious, Elliot hoped that everything would go smoothly. He had laid the final groundwork tonight, and come tomorrow, Olivia would finally get to enjoy her baby shower. Everyone had come together to make it happen in such a short time, but it would still be everything she deserved and more. To make it even better, Kathleen and Maureen – with the help of their mother – had selected a beautiful maternity dress, and when they came by the next morning, also planned to help Olivia with her hair and makeup. Lunch would be catered, and Cragen had even arranged for a cake. Elliot couldn't wait to see the look on his partner's face, and could only hope that she would be happy. For now though, he was just content to hold her in his arms.

Saturday morning found Olivia waking up a bit disoriented, but calming the instant she recognized Elliot's arms around her and remembered the reason for her new surroundings. Though she tried not to move too much for fear of waking the sleeping man next to her, it seemed he was as in tune with her needs as always, and the instant she shifted to get out of the bed, he reached out in search of her.

"Liv? Did you need help?"

"Its nothing, El, I just have to pee. But if you wanted, you're welcome to come and join me in the shower. We can get that out of the way earlier than usual today."

There was no mistaking the sultry tone of Olivia's voice, and even with the haze of sleep still clinging to his brain, Elliot knew exactly what his partner was suggesting. Practically tripping over his own feet in his haste to rush to be by her side, he hurriedly gathered a change of clothes for them both, then followed her into the in suite bathroom.

Standing under the steady stream of warm water, the pair could not keep their hands off one another. Having already forgotten about the shower having been for the purpose of getting clean and to help them start the day, Olivia's desire had risen to a near insatiable level. Knowing that just his hands and mouth alone wouldn't be enough to satisfy her, Elliot was quick to check in, as the last thing he ever wanted to do was hurt the woman he loved. It didn't matter that not just one, but both of Olivia's doctors had given them the all clear to make love, he was still afraid of doing anything that would potentially cause any kind of discomfort. Before he could voice his concerns, however, it was his partner who informed him yet again of her need.

"I want you inside me, El."

Feeling more reassured than before, Elliot didn't hesitate any longer. Pressing his lips to Olivia's with more intensity than he had previously, it was only when they separated for air that he whispered his promise in her ear.

"I know you do, and I'm going to take care of you and give you everything you need."

To prove his point, Elliot dipped his head and latched his mouth onto one of Olivia's breasts, mindful of how sensitive they had become with her pregnancy. Using his right hand, he delicately massaged the other, teasing both nipples equally until they responded to his ministrations. The more Olivia began to beg and plead, the more he gave her, until she was almost trembling in his arms. Knowing her body was desperate for release, he removed his free hand from her breast, still keeping one strong arm wrapped around to brace for support. Running his fingers through Olivia's slick folds, he used his thumb and forefinger to tease her clit, coaxing a moan that he caught with his own mouth to keep from being too audible.

"Come on, I know you need this, Liv. Just let go for for me."

Sliding first one, then a second thick finger deep inside, Elliot began a steady pattern of strokes, trying to bring his partner over the edge. He felt a jolt of pleasure course through him as well when Olivia snaked a hand between their bodies to wrap around his length and began pleasuring him to match his own movements within her.

"This is what I need. I don't want to fall without you."

Knowing she was speaking the truth, and that her strength was limited – even if his was not – the last thing Elliot wanted was for Olivia to run out of stamina now. Without breaking their kiss, he gently swatted her hand away and backed up ever so slightly. Fortunately, the shower stalls in the maternity ward were equipped with tile benches, and he and Olivia definitely put theirs to good use. Sitting down, he kept his hands on her hips and lowered her gently onto his length, entering her with as much tenderness as he could muster and letting Olivia control the depth of penetration. In the process, he had lifted his partner up ever so slightly, bracing her weight against himself, something she always protested, but was too lost in her desire to argue about today. Logically, he knew Olivia wasn't going to break, but he still wanted to be as tender as possible. Their current position was a bit difficult given the size her belly, but they had always found a way to make it work. It was important to them both to be looking into one another's eyes whenever they made love.

As it always happened when they were intimate, the sensations were overwhelming for them both. The pair moaned simultaneously the instant their bodies became one, and even though they had only just begun, Elliot felt as Olivia clenched tightly around him in response. Her head tipped back, baring her throat to his gaze, and didn't hesitate to latch on to her pulse point, having already learned how much that particular act increased her pleasure. Suckling softly so as not to leave a mark, Elliot continued to use his nimble fingers to tease Olivia's clit, nudging her further toward the precipice as he continued to maintain the steady motion of pulling her down against him along with the upward thrust of his hips.

With the way the water was making their bodies so slick, it was getting more difficult to keep holding on to one another so tightly, but Olivia was clinging to Elliot for all she was worth, and he wasn't about to let go of her, either. By now she was so close to her release that she was trembling, and having a hard time staying quiet. It was only Elliot's frequent kisses and the reminder of not wanting the nurses to overhear their activities that kept her from getting too vocal. As Elliot increased the pressure to her clit ever so slightly, he drew Olivia's earlobe in between his teeth, biting ever so gently and whispering in her ear.

"Come for me, Liv. I'm right there with you. We'll fall together."

Knowing what was coming next, Elliot didn't hesitate to fuse his mouth with his partner's, swallowing her cry as she came undone in his arms. The instant he felt Olivia's body spasming around his length

as she gave in to her orgasm, he tumbled over the edge immediately after, spilling himself inside her as they both shook with mutual fulfillment.

The water continued to cascade around them, and it was only after they both regained the ability to breathe normally again, and Elliot's length softened and gradually slipped from inside Olivia that he helped her back to an upright position. With the same care and attention that he had been showing her all morning, he lovingly washed her hair first, then built up a lather between his hands to cleanse her skin. It was only when Olivia was safely wrapped in the warmth of a towel and sitting on the chair outside of the stall that Elliot turned his focus back on himself, standing under the now cooling water to quickly soap up and wash off.

When he was finished, he hastily rubbed the towel over the droplets of water that clung to him, and helped his partner get dressed. Once they were back in the main room, Olivia settled herself at the table, knowing that breakfast would be delivered shortly. Not wanting to leave so soon after sharing such an intimate encounter, Elliot opted to forgo his morning coffee for the time being, figuring he could always indulge in a quick cup later while his daughters were helping Olivia get ready for her baby shower.

One thing that Elliot appreciated about this floor – not that it hadn't been available before – was that his meals were delivered at the same time as Olivia's. The maternity ward catered to couples and families who spending time together awaiting the arrival of their new additions, and went above and beyond to ensure that they could spend as much time together as possible.

Once Elliot was seated, Olivia propped her legs in his lap, and he didn't think twice before starting to give her a massage. Even though she rarely complained, he was well aware of how much her feet were starting to swell. It was on the tip of his tongue to apologize, but ever intuitive, Olivia was able to read his mind instantly.

"Don't you dare say you're sorry for what happened, El. I'll gladly take a few aches and pains if I get to wake up like that with you every morning. Plus, I want to take advantage of my time with you while I can get it. After Hope gets here, we won't be able to do that for awhile."

Elliot leaned forward and kissed Olivia softly.

"I'm not worried about that. All I want is for you and our daughter to both be healthy. That's the only thing that matters."

Following breakfast, Olivia retreated back to bed to indulge in a quick nap. She was initially going to refuse, but Elliot's insistence had swayed her mind in the direction of rest. In the end, she had bargained and convinced him to lie down with her. They had just woken up for the second time when their visitors arrived. Even though she had been operating on the earlier promise that her partner would be taking her to the hospital gardens today, when Olivia saw all the items that Kathy, Maureen, and Kathleen had brought with them, she was instantly suspicious.

"Elliot Stabler, what are you up to?"

"I plead the fifth."

Though voiced as a statement, the inflection in his voice almost made it seem as though it had been a question instead.

"We're not in court, El, and you're not on trial. Although I'm beginning to wonder why you seem to think you might be in trouble that you are not willing to say anything for fear of incriminating yourself."

Stepping closer, Elliot pressed his lips to Olivia's.

"Trust me?"

"Always."

"Then just let them help you, and I'll be back to get you soon. I do have a surprise for you, but I promise it's something you're going to love."

Grabbing her partner by the shirt collar, Olivia arched an eyebrow.

"That's all you're going to tell me?"

"Yup."

"You'll pay for that later."

"Yes ma'am."

Everyone in the room laughed at the glare Olivia gave Elliot just then, and he hastily retreated, knowing it was in his best interest to do so. When there were only women left, Kathy turned to Olivia, the look on her features full of concern and warmth.

"How are you feeling, Olivia?"

"I'm doing all right. I've already missed so much, it doesn't seem right to complain about any of it – even something as minor as swollen feet. I'm also so anxious to meet this little one, and starting to worry about everything."

Before Kathy had a chance to respond, it was Kathleen who spoke up. The teen had certainly come a long way since learning of Olivia's pregnancy, and the fact that her father was having another child – with his partner no less.

"Nonsense, Olivia. You're going to be an amazing mom, and a really cool one, at that!"

Maureen was quick to agree.

"She's right. You're a great listener, and even when you're tough, you're still fair. Your daughter is going to be so lucky to have you."

"Thank you both – thanks to all of you. Okay, since I have no clue what I'm walking into, I guess I should just turn myself over to you three, shall I?"

Now it was Kathy's turn.

"Not to worry, Olivia. While the girls helped a little in regard to input on fashion choices, they are mainly here for hair and makeup advice. The dress I brought for you is a common maternity style designed for comfort, but will also make you feel beautiful. Also, the shoes are similar to ones I favored myself in the later stages of pregnancy. They are perfect for swollen feet, and offer great support."

Reaching out her hand, Olivia squeezed Kathy's fingers in her own, rather than voice the words of thanks out loud again. Then, she did just as she said she would, and surrendered herself to the three women, letting them help her for whatever plans that Elliot had in store.

A little more than hour later – and she probably would have been ready sooner were it not for the need for a bathroom break – Olivia's look was complete. Kathy had found a lovely loose fitting A-line dress that had a sunflower pattern on it. With the flared skirt, it hit just at the knees, plus showcased her ample bosom and the swell of her belly where Hope was waiting to enter the world.

With the help from Maureen and Kathleen, Olivia's hair, made shinier and more luxurious than ever thanks to her pregnancy, was styled so that it fell in soft waves around her shoulders. Her bangs framed her face, which had been given just the simplest touch of makeup to accentuate her already natural beauty.

"You look gorgeous, Olivia."

"Thank you, Maureen."

As if on cue – so much so that Olivia was convinced that either Kathy or one of his daughters must have sent him a message to inform him that they were finished – Elliot appeared. Upon entering the room, he echoed the sentiment that had just been voiced.

"She's right, Liv. You look gorgeous. Are you ready for your surprise?"

"Do I have a choice?"

She was kidding, but there was also a part of Olivia that was curious what Elliot's response would be – not that she ever had any doubt.

"Always."

"Of course, I'm ready. I have no clue what I'm walking into, but you know I'd go anywhere with you by my side."

Relieved that she didn't have to be confined to a wheelchair for her journey, Olivia linked her arm with her partner's and allowed him to lead her. She had no clue where Kathy and the two older Stabler girls had gone off to, but instinct told her that she might be seeing them again sometime soon.

"We're not going to the garden, are we? I mean, no offense El, but I think I'm a bit overdressed for just sitting outside."

"You've got me there. Not that I won't take you to the garden any time you want to go, but that's not where we're headed right now."

Thankfully, as large as the hospital was, Olivia didn't have to wait long. She was, however, even more curious when they got off on a floor that she knew was typically designated more for conference rooms than anything else. When they reached a door about halfway down the hall, Elliot knocked once, and whatever was happening on the other side silenced immediately.

"I'd ask you to close your eyes, but I'd know you'd hate that."

"You're damn right. Just open the door, Stabler."

With a soft chuckle and quick kiss, Elliot agreed. Pushing the door open, he indicated that Olivia should proceed him into the room. She stepped inside, and a resounding noise reached her ears.

"SURPRISE!"

Placing his hands on the shoulders of the woman standing in front of him, Elliot whispered words meant for her only.

"I present to you your baby shower, Olivia. There was no way I was letting you miss this."

For several moments, Olivia was convinced that she was dreaming. There was no way that Elliot would have been able to pull off the organization of a baby shower – certainly not within such a short window of time. Then again, she had learned early on in their partnership that Elliot Stabler was a man who was not to be underestimated, and he had definitely proven that to be true on multiple occasions. Clinging to her partner's hand for all she was worth, Olivia glanced around the conference room, decorated so beautifully and filled with people who she cared about. She couldn't believe that they had all shown up for her. As always, her first concern was for her child.

"Are you sure this is okay?"

"I promise, Liv. I already got clearance from your doctors. You may not be able to leave the hospital, but that's why we brought the party to you."

Overcome with emotion, Olivia turned and didn't hesitate to press her lips to Elliot's, blinking back the tears that threatened to spill down her cheeks as she did so. Then, finally convinced that what she was witnessing was real, she stepped away from her partner – but only so she could begin greeting her guests. Before she had a chance to start, however, she was bestowed with a sash, one that read 'Mother-to-Be' and a rhinestone studded tiara was placed on her head. Ordinarily Olivia would protest something like this, but she simply couldn't say no. Decked out and feeling like a princess, she turned to survey the room.

The attendance of Kathy, Maureen, and Kathleen was not a surprise, especially considering these women had just helped her get ready not that long ago. To anyone else, the circumstance of someone attending the baby shower for a person carrying the child of their ex husband might seem strange, but not to Olivia. If anything, she was grateful that Kathy was so supportive, because she knew how much Elliot valued his relationship with her, and how important it was that they continued to get along for the sake of the children that they shared. Moreover, this woman was someone that Olivia had always respected.

What she hadn't expected was to see the Stabler twins, even though Elliot had assured her repeatedly that both were fine with the impending arrival of a younger sibling.

As she continued to make her way around the room, Olivia embraced her Captain, Fin, and Munch. While typically uncommon for men to be present at a baby shower, to her, having these individuals at hers was the most natural thing in the world. She wouldn't have it any other way. Likewise, seeing Melinda, Ryan, Ruben, and several others that she worked with on a daily basis was a delight. But what really touched Olivia's heart was knowing that both Alex and Casey were there, along with Dana Lewis. Elliot had gone out of his way to explain everything that the FBI agent had done on her behalf, and the brunette couldn't have been more grateful.

It wasn't an overwhelmingly large crowd, but Olivia felt the outpouring of love just the same. She didn't even protest when Elliot led her to a rocking chair that had no doubt been borrowed from the maternity floor specifically for her use to insist that she sit.

"You rest and put your feet up, Liv. I'll fix you a plate."

If she hadn't just come out of a coma that had lasted a period of just over two months – which had subsequently followed brain surgery – Olivia might have been more amused by the way Elliot fussed over her. But given everything she had endured – and what her partner had been forced to witness – there was no way she could fault him for his care and concern. She couldn't even bring herself to argue.

"Thank you. Please make sure everyone else eats, too."

"Of course."

A few minutes later, Elliot was back at her side, plate in hand laden with food and a cup filled with lemonade. As Olivia glanced at what her partner had chosen for her, she saw chicken salad on a mini croissant, an assortment of fresh fruit, some cheese cubes, and a selection of vegetables with a side of a dip. Overall, it wasn't an overwhelming amount, but a nice variety to choose from, especially considering she had taken to eating several small meals daily as opposed to two or three larger ones.

"This looks great, El. Thank you."

"Don't thank me, thank Fin and John. They're the ones responsible for arranging the catering. This party may have been my idea, but pulling it off was definitely a team effort."

As the small group milled about, eating their lunch and making conversation among themselves, Olivia worried she'd have to encourage Elliot to get something for himself. But thankfully, that wasn't necessary as he soon returned a second time to sit by her side with a plate of his own. She had no idea what else the afternoon held in store for her, but she couldn't wait to find out.

After everyone had finished with their food, Kathleen and Maureen announced that it was time for some games. Not knowing what to expect, Olivia listened carefully. Apparently the first game involved guessing what kind of parents she and Elliot would be, and it was then that Olivia remembered the questions the oldest Stabler had been asking her recently that had seemed all too innocent at the time. It had never occurred to her that Maureen would have had an ulterior motive.

Laughter ensued when Munch was proclaimed the winner, having answered the most amount of questions correctly. The man then argued that further proved his case that he would be the best candidate to be named godfather, to which Fin couldn't resist chiming in that the games weren't over yet, and he still had a chance to prove his worth, too. Calling for a truce, Olivia held up her hands, palms up.

"I think it's safe to say that ALL of you will be considered honorary aunts and uncles – save for you Cap, who I believe would be more befitting of the title of grandfather. Our little Peanut is so lucky to be born into such a large and loving family, and I'm so happy she's going to get to know each and every one of you."

It was Dana who spoke up then, as curious and inquisitive as ever. In a way, it was almost as though she were interrogating the mother to be sitting in the hot seat, but as always, Olivia handled it in stride.

"So, when do we get to learn this baby girl's name?"

"When she's born. Yes, Elliot and I have something picked out, but that's between us until she enters the world. We want it to be a surprise. That does not mean any of you can lobby to have your own names considered as potential choices."

More laughter echoed around the room following Olivia's announcement. There were a few other games after that, just as fun and silly as the ones that had been played previously. Then, Elliot announced it was time for dessert, and he helped his partner over to the table where the cake was displayed, decorated beautifully with pink roses and the words 'Waiting for Baby Benson-Stabler'. After Olivia made the first cut, slices were passed around, and then it was Kathy who suggested it was time for gifts. The other woman, along with Elliot, had intuited how tired Olivia was becoming, and were ready to rush through the rest of the party before the brunette would become overly fatigued. At least with opening the packages that the guests had brought, she could remain seated in the comfortable rocker, with her partner passing her the items one by one.

Truth be told, Olivia hadn't been expecting anything at all. It had been more than enough to just be surrounded by the people she considered to be her family. But somehow, Elliot had gone above and beyond yet again, and managed to share the wish list that she had created, and almost all of the outfits and small necessities that she had imagined for her daughter had wound up being purchased.

When it was time to say her goodbye's Olivia couldn't resist hugging everyone who had come to see her, while Elliot handled the arrangements of ensuring that all the gifts they had been given for the baby were taken to their apartment. As for what few leftovers remained, he planned to keep some of them in the small fridge in Olivia's maternity suite for snacking later in the day – but the rest would be donated to the nurses who were doing so much to take care of the woman he loved.

Back in her room, Olivia allowed Elliot to help her change into comfortable clothing and assist her into bed. She wasn't even about to deny her need for a nap, only insist that her partner lay with her. Wrapped up within the safety of Elliot's arms, she kissed him softly and whispered a word of thanks into his ear, and as Hope kicked her approval, the trio settled in for a well deserved afternoon rest.

Two weeks later, Olivia could scarcely believe the amount of time that had lapsed since Elliot had surprised her with an impromptu baby shower right here in the hospital. As she was even closer to her due date, she was more uncomfortable than ever before, but somehow it still didn't feel right to complain. Ever since she had briefly awoken when Elliot left the bed just over an hour ago, there had been a steady pressure in her lower back, and while she hadn't said anything to her partner about it yet, she definitely planned to mention it when Dr. Barrett came by for her daily visit. It wasn't a sensation that she would identify as pain, so she didn't think she was in labor – not that she had anything to compare it to. However, based on the wealth of information she had learned from her own research as well as all the help given to her by her obstetrician, Olivia was confident that it was just another symptom she would have to endure as Hope was one step closer to entering the world.

"Hey, Liv. I'm sorry I wasn't here when you woke up, I was trying to let you sleep."

The sound of Elliot's voice pulled Olivia back to the present, and she turned her head to greet her partner with a kiss. It was harder these days to get out of bed and move about, but she was still determined to make the most of her independence. Even so, she was comfortable enough with the man by her side to ask for help when she needed it.

"Do you think you can get me to an upright position? Our daughter is making that a bit difficult at the moment."

"Of course. Breakfast should be brought in soon, too, if you're hungry."

Kissing Elliot a second time, Olivia pulled back, making a face as she did so.

"You have coffee breath."

"I'm sorry. I meant to stop and rinse with mouthwash before I came back, but I completely forgot. Something was telling me that you needed me."

Cupping her palm around Elliot's jaw, Olivia softened her gaze.

"I appreciate that, even if you do worry too much. But, before we can continue this conversation, I'm going to need to pee."

"You've got it."

With one hand braced on her ever growing baby bump, and the other pressed against her aching back, Olivia slowly but surely made her way to the in suite bathroom. Knowing there was no need to latch or lock the door behind her, she merely pushed it closed, and went about her usual morning acrobatics of how to sit down without losing her balance. Thankfully, out of consideration for the expectant mothers on this ward – as well as those who had recently delivered - the toilets were more raised than most, so she didn't have far to squat before making contact with the seat. So preoccupied with the instant relief she felt as her swollen bladder was finally allowed to empty, that Olivia didn't even notice the stain in her underwear until just as she was about to get back to her feet. But the moment she spied the slight discoloration, she was calling out for Elliot, who was by her side in an instant.

"What is it? Are you in pain?"

"No, no pain. I just went to pull my pants up and I noticed this."

The fear was evident in Olivia's voice, and Elliot was desperate to alleviate it. Were he not already an experienced father, he might have been prone to panic, too. But given the timing and placement, he was fairly certain what had prompted the appearance of the mark of discharge on the gusset of fabric between his partner's legs. They'd still need Dr. Barrett to confirm, but he didn't believe there was cause for alarm.

"It's going to be okay, Liv. After I help you back in bed, I'll go out and have them page Dr. Barrett just to be sure, but I think you've just lost your mucous plug. Seems like our little Peanut is anxious to meet her mama."

As realization dawned, with it came a sense of relief. Now that she wasn't spiraling headfirst into worst case scenarios, Olivia remembered what she had read about the changes in a woman's body as she neared the beginning stages of labor, and she was able to breathe a little easier.

Though he hated to leave for any reason, Elliot knew it was imperative to contact Olivia's obstetrician, and he didn't want to waste any time by pressing the call button and waiting for someone to answer. Heading directly to the nurses station, he explained the situation, and Dr. Barrett was promptly paged. Not wanting to be away from his partner for any longer than absolutely necessary, he headed back in the direction he had come from, to find Olivia sitting propped up against the headboard, both hands cradling her abdomen and tears in her eyes. Before he could say a word, the woman on the bed was speaking.

"I'm not ready, El. I know what this means, and I'm not ready. I thought we had more time. Granted, not a lot of it, but even so. Yes, I want to meet our little girl, but I'm scared."

"I know you are, but I'm going to be right here every step of the way. Just try and take some deep breaths, and squeeze my hand as much as you need to."

Olivia never had a chance to reply, as Dr. Barrett breezed into the room. Apparently she had been made aware of the urgency of the situation, and as always, had made her patient a priority.

"Okay, Olivia. I don't want you to worry. From what I hear, it sounds like Elliot's theory is likely correct, but I'm going to need to take a look just to confirm. Is that okay?"

"Yes."

No matter how gentle Dr. Barrett made an effort to be, there was no portion about this particular exam that was comfortable or pleasant in any way. Hanging on to Elliot's hand for all she was worth, Olivia focused on her breathing and tried to force her body to remain as relaxed as possible.

"All right, Olivia. It's just as we thought, and Elliot was one hundred percent correct. You've lost your mucous plug, and are starting to dilate – not too much just yet, only one centimeter, but I think it's definitely safe to say that you are in the early stages of labor. However, given that this is your first birth, your little one might take her time. I wouldn't put a rush on calling in the cavalry just yet – at least not until after your water breaks."

Dazed, Olivia managed to nod, then exchanged a glance with Elliot. Much like her own, his eyes were shining with tears at the prospect that in the very near future, they would be holding their daughter in their arms for the very first time. When Dr. Barrett began speaking again, however, Olivia was all ears.

"I am going change your diet. I won't stop you from eating altogether, especially since we don't know how long your labor is going to last. But, I want you to stick to lighter foods, and keep fluids to a minimum. That way, when it comes time for you to deliver, anesthesia will be able to administer an epidural without any complications."

"That seems fair. Are you sure that won't be a problem given my recent medical history? I don't want to do anything that is going to cause any issues."

Dr. Barrett took Olivia's hand in her own and squeezed gently.

"Olivia, I promise you, the epidural is completely safe for both you and your baby. If it will make you feel more comfortable, as your labor progresses, I can bring Dr. Adelman in to assist."

"Yes, please. I don't want to take any chances."

With a few parting instructions and reassurances, the obstetrician left the two partners on their own to marvel at the wonder of what had just transpired. Not wanting to be apart for a moment longer than necessary, Elliot climbed into the bed beside Olivia and wrapped her in his arms, holding her close as they wept tears of joy together. The one thing Elliot didn't realize was he wasn't the only one reciting a quiet prayer of hope in his mind.

While it was no secret the staff was going to continue to make every effort to ensure Olivia's privacy, not long after Dr. Barrett left, a few changes took place. It required both Olivia and Elliot to move, but even with the minor inconvenience of having to leave the comfort of the bed temporarily, all of the impending adjustments made perfect sense.

One of the first things Olivia was asked to do was switch from her customary maternity clothing back into a hospital issue gown. It had been so long since she had worn one on a daily basis, but it was obvious that she couldn't give birth while wearing pants, no matter how comfortable they were. Having the distraction of getting changed in the bathroom with Elliot's help allowed Olivia to keep from being too focused on the equipment that was being brought into her room to not only monitor her labor, but also eventually assist in her delivery. Thankfully, the majority of things were out of sight on the other side by the delivery bed – a feature that no longer seemed as intimidating as it once had, but as the reality of its need became even more real, Olivia felt her anxiety rising up anew.

Having the fetal monitor reattached was not a surprise, nor was the blood pressure cuff that was wrapped around her bicep. One thing Olivia didn't have to worry about was making a mess on the occasion when her water would eventually break. Not that the impending embarrassment didn't already exist at the back of her mind. However, the mattress she was currently lying on had an additional protective layer under the sheets that was waterproof – yet another amenity provided in the maternity ward.

It wasn't until someone came into her room with a tray that Olivia even remembered that she hadn't eaten breakfast yet. So much had happened in the short amount of time since she'd woken up, and yet so little time had passed. At first, she was hesitant to eat, but then Dr. Barrett's advice came flooding back. Plus, it wasn't as though she was in active labor just yet, and she was going to need her energy. With the memory of her obstetrician having told her to consume mostly light foods, Olivia focused on the scrambled eggs on her plate, along with the yogurt that had been provided. Elliot offered to go and get her something else if she was still hungry, but Olivia shook her head.

"No, thank you. This is plenty. I'd be lying if I said my nerves weren't getting the better of me. Speaking of food, though – I'm glad you brought up the subject, because there was something I've been wanting to tell you. Didn't think I'd be this close to delivery when I mentioned it, though."

"What is it, Liv?"

"Just because I may not be able to eat when in active labor, doesn't mean that you can't. We have no clue how long it's going to take before Hope gets here – it could be hours, it could be days. Don't try and be a hero by going without, all in the means of showing support. You can do exactly that with a full stomach. The last thing I need is one of my nurses having to pick you up off the floor because you fainted."

Pressing his lips to his partner's, Elliot bit back the chuckle that was threatening to escape.

"Message received, loud and clear. Anything else I can do for you in the meantime?"

"Hold me?"

More than happy to oblige, Elliot carried the breakfast trays they were no longer interested in over to the table, then crawled into bed beside Olivia. Wrapping her up in his arms, mindful of the fetal monitor resting on the swell of her abdomen, he pulled her against his chest to hold her close.

Olivia was just starting to get comfortable, especially since the pressure in her lower back and abdomen was starting to become more prevalent than it had before. However, just as she had tucked her head under Elliot's chin and attempted to close her eyes, she felt a sensation of wetness between her legs that she was unable to control. Initially believing to have wet herself, Olivia was mortified at first until realization dawned and she understood what had just happened. Her water must have broken, which meant that her labor was progressing. As though her body was trying to prove a point, an intense contraction seized her at that very moment, stealing Olivia's breath from her lungs and making her clutch desperately at Elliot's hand.

"Oh, fuck!"

Without extricating himself from the way his partner clinging to him, Elliot managed to set the timer on his watch to keep track of the span between contractions. Unless there were alarmingly close together, there was still no cause for panic, though he knew that the next thing Olivia would want to do would be to put on a fresh gown and clean up a little. Not wanting their privacy to be interrupted just yet, he was content to hold the woman in his arms, and whispered words of comfort and encouragement in her ear.

"It's okay, Liv. Just breathe. I get that you didn't really have the chance for traditional Lamaze classes or anything like that, but I know you read everything you possibly could on the subject."

"I have. I know you have, too."

Even if he hadn't already been a father of four, Elliot had other experience to speak of. Once on a case, he had delivered a baby in the field. While that outcome was a lot more tragic than anyone could have wanted, he knew what to expect. Still, when it was your own child who was about to enter the world, it was a whole lot more difficult to remain objective. Add into it the factors of Olivia's own health complications that had happened all too recently, and it was understandable to say that Elliot was just as anxious as his partner. But, he was determined to stay strong for both of them, because he knew how much she needed him. Plus, both Dr. Barrett and Dr. Adelman were confident that Olivia was healthy and that the labor and birth would progress without any issues.

"El?"

"Yeah, I know. Let's get you cleaned up."

"How did you know what I was going to ask?"

Pressing a kiss to Olivia's temple, Elliot helped his partner out of bed.

"Because I know you. You've been wanting to put on a fresh gown ever since your water broke. Now, would you prefer to shower, or just wash up?"

"Shower, please."

With another kiss, Elliot suggested Olivia sit on the edge of the bed until he returned, then he stepped out long enough to ask for a fresh gown and a quick change of sheets. When he got back, he joined his partner in the bathroom, fully intending on showering with her as well. Under the soothing spray of the warm water, he lovingly washed Olivia's hair and body while they shared several kisses. Just as he was about to grab the towel to dry his partner off, she was gripped by another contraction, and Elliot noted the time on his watch.

"Ten minutes. Not bad, but it still could be awhile yet. I'll make sure to mention it to the nurses once we get you back in your gown and get you settled in bed. I'm sure Dr. Barrett will want to know."

As much as Olivia would have liked to have said her many hours spent in labor were a blur, there were anything but. Despite all that, she still couldn't bring herself to complain. Even with the seemingly tedious way the minutes ticked slowly by, separated only by the discomfort of contractions, she wouldn't change it for the world. Not when she had come so very close to not having had this experience at all. If anything, it made her all the more grateful for each and every moment. True to his word, Elliot had been by her side through it all, save for the short breaks he had taken to grab a quick bite to eat at Olivia's insistence. Other than that, he had been a perfect support – feeding her ice chips, massaging her back, and frequently bathing her face with a damp cloth dipped in cold water to ease away the perspiration.

"How long has it been now?"

Not needing his partner to clarify, Elliot knew exactly what she meant.

"You've been in labor for fourteen hours. You were at eight centimeters the last time Dr. Barrett was in, but your contractions are coming closer together. Its why she moved you over here to the delivery bed."

"I know, but the only thing I hate is its not big enough for you to be in it with me."

"It shouldn't be much longer, Liv. Then, as long as it won't hurt you or make you uncomfortable, I'll be happy to hold you as much as you want."

Confused, and relieved for the reprieve between contractions where she could breathe more easily, Olivia looked at her partner with a question in her eyes.

"Why do you say it like that?"

"Because I'm guessing pretty soon you might be cursing my very existence and insisting I'm never to touch you again."

Laughing, Olivia leaned over ever so slightly until her head was resting on Elliot's shoulder.

"Not a chance. I'm entirely too happy to be able to have this at all to think of anything other than the fact that I'm extremely blessed to have you by my side."

The two shared a tender and loving kiss before one of the alarms to Olivia's right sounded, indicating another incoming contraction. She wasn't sure whether or not to appreciate the monitoring system, or to view it as a harbinger of doom. Although the more she considered the outcome – getting to hold Hope in her arms – she could only see it as another positive factor.

"More ice chips?"

"Please."

Olivia couldn't be certain, but it felt as though the epidural she'd had back when her more active labor had begun was beginning to wear off. Either that, or the sensation was purely her imagination. Considering her knowledge of the subject and what the anesthesiologist had explained, she reasoned it was more likely the latter. Prior to being given the medication, the kind woman had assured both Olivia and Elliot that the effects would last throughout the duration of labor.

"Hello, Olivia. How are you feeling?"

Dr. Barrett stepped into the room, her labor and delivery nurse by her side. Also accompanying them was Dr. Adelman, who had been checking on Olivia throughout the day.

"Tired. I know this bed is necessary, but it isn't anywhere near as comfortable as my other one. There's also a lot more pressure than before."

"I understand. Let's take a look and see how much you've progressed, shall we?"

With Elliot's assistance, Olivia was able to get her legs into position as her obstetrician examined her cervix.

"Good news. You're dilated to the full ten centimeters, and I can see you're starting to crown. Are you ready to meet your daughter?"

Clinging more tightly to Elliot's hand, Olivia looked into her partner's eyes. All the fears she had been feeling previously had come back full force, and she needed the strength of the man she loved to keep from being taken over by them completely.

"You've got this, Liv."

It seemed to take forever, and was most certainly the most difficult experience of Olivia's life to date. She wasn't sure she would have been able to continue were it not for Elliot's steady presence beside her. Her partner was a pillar of strength, his voice murmuring a continuous stream of encouragement in her ear. During the breaks between pushing, he kept mopping her face, and telling her how strong and beautiful she was. However, even now when she was so close to finally holding Hope in her arms, the possibility still seemed completely out of reach. Exhausted, emotional, and at her wit's end, Olivia ultimately gave in to the uncertainty threatening to consume her.

"I can't do this."

"Yes, you can, Olivia. You've got this. You're so much stronger than I could ever hope to be. You're almost there, just a little bit longer. Squeeze my hand as much as you need to."

"I'm tired."

Brushing the damp hair off his partner's forehead, Elliot pressed his lips against her sweaty brow.

"I know you are, baby, I know. But I promise it's almost over. Our little Peanut is almost here, and we've waited so long to meet her. You can do this."

"Elliot -"

Realizing what he had just said, Elliot pressed another kiss to Olivia's temple by way of silent apology.

"I remember. Don't call you baby."

"No, that's not it. I'm scared."

Not wanting to interrupt what she felt was a private conversation, but knowing that her patient needed to deliver soon to avoid any excess stress, Dr. Barrett opted to intervene.

"Olivia, I want you to listen to me. You're just about there. Your daughter's head is almost out, and after that it's just a matter of her shoulders, and the rest will come easy. I just need three or four more good pushes, and you'll be holding your little girl. Elliot, get on the bed behind her and let her brace against you."

Not needing to be told twice, Elliot did as he was instructed, straddling one leg on either side of Olivia's body. Pulling her back against his chest, he reached down and entwined their hands.

"Let's do this, partner. Let's have a baby."

True to Doctor Barrett's premonition, four strenuous pushes later, Olivia felt as the child she had nurtured and grown all these months slipped from her body into her obstetrician's waiting arms. As she collapsed back against Elliot in exhaustion, her ears were met with the most wonderful sound in the world as Hope tried out her lungs for the very first time. Not wasting a moment, the doctor quickly placed the squalling newborn on her mother's chest, Olivia's gown having already been pulled down in preparation for skin-to-skin contact. Dr. Barrett allowed Elliot the honor of cutting the cord. Then, in a state of awe, both partners examined their daughter, counting ten fingers and ten toes. With tears streaming down both of their cheeks, Olivia turned to face Elliot, and was more than ready when his lips met hers.

"She's beautiful Liv. Just like you. And you, you were a fucking rock star."

"I couldn't have done it without you."

The nurse then showed Olivia how to encourage the baby to latch on to her breast, in an attempt to stimulate milk production – even if it wouldn't come in completely for a few days yet, and to gauge the level of the newborn's suckling response. Despite Olivia's obvious apprehension, both mother and daughter were naturals, and took to the new routine beautifully.

After allowing the new family a few moments, Dr. Barrett reluctantly had to break up the moment. It was always her least favorite part of deliveries, but she promised the parents that they would be reunited with their little one again soon. However, Olivia still needed to deliver the placenta, be examined for any tearing that may have occurred during birth and receive potential stitches, and then get cleaned up. Likewise, the newly named Hope Eloise Benson-Stabler had to be examined by the doctors in the NICU. Her arrival two weeks early wasn't any great cause for concern, but they wanted to make sure everything was okay.

"Elliot, go. Go with her."

"But what about you?"

"I'll be fine. She needs you more than I do right now."

Not willing to argue, if anything feeling a sense of relief that Olivia had made the decision of where his loyalties should lie on his behalf, Elliot pressed another kiss to lips of the woman he loved, and then climbed off the bed. Promising to return as soon as he was able, he followed behind the nurse who was carrying his daughter to the NICU, his heart full of love.

An hour later, Elliot made his way back to the room he had spent the last several weeks sharing with Olivia, still in a state of awe. Little Hope had been assessed by a team of doctors in the NICU, and given the all clear. Their daughter had been declared to be fully developed and completely healthy, no complications at all even with her somewhat early arrival into the world. Now, after having been cleaned up and freshly diapered, she was resting comfortably in a little isolette in the nursery – but not before Elliot had had his own chance to experience some skin to skin contact with his newest child. When given the opportunity, he hadn't hesitated a moment before stripping off his shirt to bare his chest, and cradled the tiny baby close to his heart.

Weighing in at just slightly over seven pounds, Hope was at an excellent birth weight, and her length was measured at twenty inches – her height likely inherited from both parents. The nurses promised to bring the baby back to Olivia shortly, but wanted to be sure the new mother had some adequate time to rest and recover from her delivery first.

For his part, Elliot had also managed to contact those who would have wanted to know about the newest arrival, more grateful than he could say that everyone was willing to respect their privacy – not that he would have expected anything less. Of course his kids were all eager to come and meet their little sister, but they all understood the need for Olivia to heal some, not to mention bond with Hope, too.

As for the family he and Olivia had both found at SVU, they also were looking forward to greeting the newest member, but didn't want to cause overwhelm. Instead, Cragen, Fin, Munch and their other dear friends offered to help in other ways – by making sure the apartment Olivia and Elliot would be heading home to was ready, setting up a meal delivery service once Olivia was discharged from the hospital, and even offering their assistance as potential babysitters to give the new mother a much welcome nap should she need a break.

One of the other things Elliot had done – partly to keep himself from going insane as he waited for Hope's exam to be complete and he was allowed to see his daughter – was figure out a gift for his partner. Just having fresh flowers sent to the hospital didn't seem like enough of a way to express his gratitude to thank the woman he loved for giving birth to his child. Instead, he wanted to find a way to honor both mother and daughter alike, something that Olivia could treasure for years to come. Though it wouldn't be ready immediately, he was able to design a custom jewelry piece, a pendant of a mother and child embracing that looked to be in the shape of a heart, and also would feature both Olivia and Hope's birthstones.

Entering the room, Elliot found Olivia back in the bed they had grown accustomed to sharing together. It was adjusted to be raised at the back to give her some support, and she was wearing the more comfortable clothing she favored. From the dampness of her hair, it was obvious that one of the nurses had helped her to shower or bathe, and even though she had been cleaned up and had a chance to rest, there was still a flush evident in her cheek bones from her earlier exertion. Likewise, even though his partner was awake, her exhaustion was obvious.

"Liv. I thought you'd be sleeping."

"I couldn't - not until I knew about Hope. The nurses came and told me everything was fine, but I wanted to hear about her from you. How is she, did you get to hold her again?"

"I did, and I swear she's even more beautiful than the moment she was born. They're going to bring her to your room in a bit, they just wanted to give you a chance to rest for awhile."

Leaning further back against the pillows, Olivia allowed a small sigh to escape from her lips. She was tired, but the concept of sleep just didn't seem possible with all of the adrenaline still coursing through her body – even if logically, she knew it was necessary. Before she could say another word, however, her stomach betrayed her by growling loudly. With a knowing look, Elliot leaned forward and pressed a kiss to her forehead.

"How about I go and get you something to eat – anything you want – and then you can try to nap? If it won't hurt you or make you uncomfortable, I'll even hold you. You haven't said whether or not you're in pain from the delivery, and I don't want to make things worse."

Once again, it was on the tip of Olivia's tongue to not complain and keep what she was feeling to herself. But the last couple of hours had changed her in more ways than one. Not only was she now officially a mother, but her relationship with Elliot had been irrevocably altered. Granted, their closeness had been evolving over the past weeks – had ever since that night he had come to her apartment and they had conceived their daughter. But now, they shared a child, a living, breathing testament that would forever connect them to one another. She wasn't going through life alone anymore, she had a partner in more ways than one, and a little girl who depended on her. It was time for her to admit that she couldn't carry it all on her own. Plus, it wasn't as if Elliot were a stranger to the changes in a woman's body after she had given birth. He would understand everything, and never judge her for it, or even be grossed out.

"I won't say I'm in a lot of pain, although I'm not exactly feeling the greatest, either. I did, after all, just push a tiny human being out of my body not that long ago. However, the nurse gave me some Tylenol for the discomfort – it will be safe enough to take, and won't be a danger for when I start nursing, but I'm sure you remember that part."

Licking her lips, Olivia continued.

"As for food, I'm starving. I'm not sure what it is I want, though, so I'm putting the decision in your hands. Just be sure to get yourself something, too, because I know you haven't eaten, either – not since the last time you left me during labor to grab a bite."

"You've got it. How about I go place an order for delivery, and then come back? You still haven't mentioned whether or not it's okay if I hold you."

"I would love that. I'm an emotional mess, my hormones are even more all over the place than they were before, and thanks to the heavy duty pads the nurses gave me to control the post partum bleeding, I feel like I'm wearing a giant diaper, but I think being wrapped up in your arms is exactly what I need."

Kissing Olivia softly, Elliot promised to be back as soon as possible. While he was gone, two other deliveries came into the room – not of food, but congratulatory bouquets of flowers and balloons. That was when Olivia lost the battle with her tears all over again as she realized just how loved she was. It was how her partner found her, weeping softly, when he returned to the room a few minutes later.

"Liv, what is it?"

"We have the best friends ever."

"We do. I sent them some pictures of Hope. To Kathy and my kids too. Don't worry, everyone is going to give you plenty of time to rest before coming to meet her, and no one is going to overwhelm you all at once."

"I wasn't worried about that at all. I can't wait to introduce our daughter to her family."

Crawling into the bed beside his partner, Elliot pulled her into his arms. She curled into him immediately, molding herself against his body and tucking her head under his chin.

"I wouldn't have been able to do what I did today without you. I was so tired at the end, part of me wanted to give up, even though I knew I couldn't."

"I meant what I said earlier, too, Liv. You were a fucking rock star. You're the strongest woman I've ever met, and you've more than proved that over the past few months. Not only that, but I know that is a trait you'll have passed on to our daughter. I'm so proud to be able to have a family with you. I love you."

"I love you, too. Thank you for giving me a daughter. Thank you for making my dreams come true."

More than an hour later, both Elliot and Olivia had eaten, and the latter was now sleeping peacefully in her partner's arms. Having finally given in to her exhaustion now that her hunger had been satiated, Olivia was getting some much needed rest. For his part, Elliot remained awake, and while he dozed a bit off and on, he was mostly marveling over the events of the day. So much had happened since that morning, and now he had a brand new child to love and protect. Already he loved Hope with his whole heart – had even before she was born. A nurse who had tiptoed into the room earlier promised that their daughter would be brought to them shortly for a bottle feeding, as Olivia was not yet producing colostrum, and it would still be another few days before her milk would come in. However, there was a breast milk bank available at the hospital – something that had been discussed with them at length as they prepared for Hope's arrival, and Olivia had decided for that in favor of formula. Not that she had anything against that particular alternative, as there was no shame in it whatsoever. That was why Elliot hoped that his partner would be successful when it came to breast feeding – not just for the bond it would create between mother and child, but because of how much it meant to her.

Elliot was also well aware, and very much relieved, that Olivia wasn't planning to shoulder the responsibility of feeding their child entirely on her own. Having been gifted pumps as part of the baby shower that was held not that long ago, she had every intention to balance out the feedings and ask for help when needed. Not that he was in any way comparing the women in his life, but Kathy had done the same, and Elliot had always been happy to help, taking on a nighttime feeding or two to allow his then wife to sleep. His goal was to do the same for Olivia, to share the load of parenting equally.

The brunette in his arms stirred, and Elliot instinctively froze, worried that somehow his intrusive thinking had been too loud and woken his slumbering partner. When Olivia blinked sleepily awake, the realization that dawned on her face was truly a sight to behold as her hands instinctively went to her abdomen as they always did, only to discover that their daughter was not in fact nestled within her safe cocoon.

"It's real, isn't it? She's really here?"

Looking over Olivia's shoulder, Elliot saw one of the nurses pushing in a bassinet. He didn't even have to strain his ears to hear the soft cooing of his daughter, and turned to face his partner, a smile on her face that matched the one on his own.

"Not only is she really here, Liv, but our little girl has come back to see her mama. Are you ready to hold her again?"

"Absolutely. Help me sit up?"

"Of course."

Easing Olivia into a comfortable position, Elliot fussed for what he realized was probably a bit longer than necessary, propping pillows behind his partner's back and making sure the bed was providing adequate support. Then, he accepted the small, swaddled bundle from the nurse and deposited the newborn into the safety of her mother's arms.

"Would you like to give her a bottle?"

"Yes."

Accepting the bottle filled with a small amount of donated breast milk from the nurse, Olivia looked to Elliot, her eyes filled with warmth and even brighter than usual.

"Sit with us?"

"You don't have to ask me twice."

For only being a few hours old, Hope's instincts continued to be strong, and she took the bottle beautifully. Despite being swaddled, one little hand was free, and though carefully covered to prevent her from accidentally scratching herself, she lay it against her mother's clothed breast as she suckled softly on the nourishment she was being given. Neither Elliot nor Olivia said a word, both enthralled at the sight in front of them.

It was while Hope was feeding that her eyes opened, and she looked up at her parents for the very first time. While they had been able to observe the impressive growth of hair that was so like her mother's not long after she had been born, Olivia had not yet seen her daughter's eyes, and Elliot had been too preoccupied with making sure she was healthy to worry.

While it was a common fact that most newborns were born with blue eyes – and that it was a trait that Olivia had hoped her own child would keep, mainly because she wanted to see the feature she so loved about her partner represented in a life they had created together, it turned out Hope favored her mother in more ways than one. Much to Elliot's delight, his wish had been granted with the arrival of a mini Olivia Benson – and any teasing warnings he might hear from his coworkers about his daughter also inheriting his partner's temperament were immediately silenced. There was nothing that would make him happier or prouder than for Hope to be as fierce as Olivia.

"She has your eyes, Liv. She looks just like you."

"I know. I wanted her to have blue eyes, like yours. But I can't deny she's beautiful. How can you love someone so much that you just met?"

It was on the tip of Elliot's tongue to say something about that just came with the territory of being a parent, but he knew that wasn't necessarily true. Not only did they bear witness to that nearly every day in their work together in SVU, but each of them had experienced it firsthand with their own childhoods. Instead, he decided to offer something else.

"It's just one of those instant connections. I felt that the day I first met you. I mean, never in a million years did I think we'd be here, but I'm so glad we are."

"Me, too. Do you want to hold her? I think she's almost done with her bottle."

Not wanting to intrude on Olivia's own bonding time, but unwilling to refuse the offer, Elliot welcomed his daughter back into his arms. Burping the newborn gently first since she had just been fed, he then cradled her against his chest, wrapping his free arm around his partner to pull her close as well. His heart was so full he thought it might burst.

Elliot and Olivia's time with Hope was not enough, and when the nurse came to take their daughter back to nursery for the night, neither were ready to let her go. It was then that the kind woman explained that it was only for Olivia's first night as a new mother, to ensure that she got adequate sleep. Starting tomorrow, if she so wished, Hope could stay with her and Elliot in their room. Eagerly agreeing to the terms, both of the partners held their daughter one last time before passing her back to the nurse, and each were fighting back tears as she was carried away.

"If I'm this emotional now, what am I going to be like on her first day of daycare?"

"Don't worry about that yet. We'll figure something out. Maybe we can even hire a nanny who can come to us. But for now we're going to enjoy every possible moment with her."

"You're right."

Trying to get out of bed, Olivia winced and let out a soft gasp as the pain between her legs intensified. By her side in an instant, Elliot was there to offer help.

"What do you need?"

"I need to pee. Although based on what I just felt, I'm guessing it's not going to be a pleasant experience."

"Sorry, Liv. Do you want me to walk with you to the bathroom?"

"Please."

After Olivia was settled back under the covers several minutes later, Elliot asked if she wanted anything else to eat.

"No, I think I just want to sleep. The day is definitely catching up with me."

"Then that's what we'll do."

As the two gravitated together the way they'd been when sharing the bed, Olivia rested her head on Elliot's chest and wrapped her arm around his waist. She was asleep in minutes, the sound of her partner's heartbeat in her ear, and the face of her daughter dominating her dreams. At long last, she was finally a mother.
