Hello, and welcome back to this. The heat's been back with a vengeance, but I'm managing all right. Also, I've been seeing more comments on this, which is always a plus, but keep reading for those who have questions, as almost all of them can be answered in the story.
Chapter 18: I Dance
"Anything?" Kendo asked Fukidashi and Bondo, both boys looking around the area, trying to spot their classmates. At present, it was just them, along with Awase, Kaibara, Tsunotori, and Thirteen, up against the warp villain that had scattered the rest of their classmates seemingly to the seven winds.
"I think I can see some people in the landslide zone, but that's it. the rest are too far." Bondo replied, though he couldn't make out much of what was happening there, only that there was fighting.
"Same here. What I wouldn't give to have a nose like Shishida," Fukidashi stated, as their resident beast's nose would have made tracking a hell of a lot easier, especially since 2 of the zones were domed off, hiding what was happening inside from view.
"That at least means that they're still in the building. That's good." Kendo replied, though she never let her eyes leave the current threat.
"That's some good news, but that still means we have to deal with this guy, and none of our attacks can even touch him." Kaibara cursed, as even after he had scattered their classmates, they had tried to attack him, first with Bondo's glue and then with Tsunotori's horns, but both just passed right through him. However, Thirteen suspected that there was more to it than the villain merely being intangible, recalling his comment to Kamakiri and Tetsutetsu's reckless charge.
She had an idea. "Which one of you is the fastest?" She asked them, only turning her head a little to face them but keeping the villain in her sight.
"What?" They asked her, but they needed more time as is.
Thirteen wasn't as gruff or stern as Vlad. Still, she wasn't a pushover either, so her statement carried all the authority of a seasoned pro, one used to directing people and keeping order in disaster situations. "Answer the question quickly."
"Hmm, I guess it would be me," Kaibara answered, as he had the best time in the 50m and distance runs out of the assembled students.
"Good. This is important, but I can't trust anyone else to do it now. You need to get out of here, run to the school as quickly as possible and tell them what is happening," Thirteen told him, causing Kaibara's eyes to widen in shock.
"With the security system either down or being jammed, along with our phones, it's safe to assume that the main campus has no idea what is happening here. They must have someone with an interference-type quirk hiding in or around the area. We don't have the time to look for them. It'll be faster to send a runner."
"But that's insane. Even if we ignore the fact I'm not that fast, you're asking me to turn tail and run. I just can't." Kaibara's rejection of the idea was cut short when Kendo placed a hand on his shoulder, drawing his attention to his vice rep.
"Kaibara, there is a difference between a retreat and a step back. You're not retreating but taking a step back to get us some help, help we really need right about now." Kendo told him as she stepped forward, one of her hands growing to act as a shield.
"Go get cavalry. We hold villains off here." Tsunotori was next, her two horns shooting off her head and floating in front of her eyes, eyes locked on the villain between them and the exit.
"We can keep these ass hats busy while you're gone, don't worry about us." Awase grabbed some gear from his bag and made himself a staff member to fight with.
"They won't follow if you get out," Kodai spoke up, the first since things went to shit and while she was still somewhat monotone, Kaibara could hear hints of fear and resolve in her words.
"Remember what I told you when you arrived here, Kaibara. Today was about learning how to use your quirk to save people! Now it's time to put that to practice." Thirteen reminded him, her words being the straw that broke the camel's back as he aggressively scratched his scalp.
"Dammit, after all that, I'll need to be a real piece of shit to just say no," Kaibara said before his eyes cleared, and he took a runner's stance; his legs started to rotate, same as his hands. "Alright, just give me an opening."
"I overestimated you, Thirteen; only a fool would discuss their plans in front of their enemy!" The villain yelled, their quirk extending outwards like a wave once more, set to crash into them and teleport them who knew where.
"We didn't bother because it doesn't matter if you know!" Thirteen clapped back, lifting her finger up and uncapping it, her black hole quickly springing to action as the tremendous force of attraction pulled in every last bit of the cloud-like substance before it could even reach her or her students. "Black Hole!"
While those by the entrance faced off against what could be considered one of the League of Villains heavy hitters, Midoriya found himself facing off against the grunts and it was showing. They were clearly placed here because they were largely unaffected by the flames or could control or use fire. But this meant nothing to him as he blocked a fireball with his armoured right arm, continued his assault, and landed a heavy gut punch to the villains that threw it, rodding them of breath before turning on his heel and kicking them in the side of the head, putting them sleep as anther villain tried to control the flames around them to attack him.
Wondering why they kept trying to use fire against him of all people, he didn't object to it as he let the flames crash into him, washing over him like a relaxing bath before he fired off two small fireballs, one after the other. The first hit a villain in the knee, while the second crashed right into his surprised face, giving him burns and flipping him into his back with a groan. Grabbing into a villain, his jaw opened to let him blast them with a stream straight to the face, causing them to scream in pain and try and fight back, but in turn, he only let go when they grew weak, and he knocked them to the ground.
Having handled the 10th villain, he turned to the rest of them, showing that despite his gear being burnt in places, he and his snake were fine. If anything, the glowing green eyes and a giant serpent wrapped around his shoulders only intimidated them as he stood unharmed by the flames that raged around them. He certainly affected his classmates, who watched in awe as he handled the threat quickly.
"Dammit, what the hell is this kind made of? Does he not burn?" One of them asked, taking a step back from the fearsome sight.
"Don't know, don't care! We have a job, and we'll be damned-" Another tried to rally them, as they still outnumbered him 30 to one, but Midoriya didn't give the time.
"Serpent's Fire Scales!" Taking a breath, he let loose a massive fireball that exploded into 13 smaller ones, each tracking a different target. Upon impact with their chests, guts, or limbs, they burst like supercharged firecrackers, eliciting shocks, pain, and grunts from the villains as most went down, either down for the count or unwilling to continue.
"I can't see the area's walls too well with all the smoke, but I'm pretty sure we're getting close to the exit." Midoriya thought aloud, walking by his defeated foes. He looked at his gear with a frown, and while the armoured bits were fine, the fabrics on the other parts were severely burnt. He should ask them to ensure they use only the best flame-resistant stuff next time. Walking by an alley, Koharu yelled that someone was trying to ambush them.
Turning his head, he saw a large man jumping at him, armed with a machete. He knew that would be more damage than any of the flames. "Damn kids, I'm not going down to yo-!" As he was about to strike, he was caught in a mess of vines. Looking at where he came from, he saw that the culprit behind this was Shiozaki.
"Guys, I thought you were hiding," Midoriya stated as Shiozaki wrapped the villain up tightly.
Looking his way, she had an air of renewed determination to her before she turned back to her captured foe. "I will not let evil-doers act as they please; you'll have time to repent for your sins once you're arrested." To the side, Tsuburaba handled a villain by hitting her over the head with a bat made of air, but it shattered on impact. However, it did stun her long enough for him to make a hasty replacement and hit her again, which did the trick and knocked her out.
Wiping the sweat off his brow and taking as deep a breath as he could in the situation, the boy stated. "Damn, I really need to start carrying a tank of air or something." Before he gave Midoriya a thumbs-up. "Besides, we can't let you do all the work."
Part of him wished they remained behind, especially because their quirks weren't suited for this environment, but a larger part of him felt so fuzzy and warm that they were helping him regardless of that. He liked that feeling—he liked it a lot. However, this left him distracted, and one villain, tired of seeing their 'allies' be humiliated by three kids, decided that they needed to use drastic methods.
Jumping out from the building he had taken cover in from the initial assault from Midoriya, he yelled out, "Then you can all die together!" Before slamming his hand into the building, his quirk sending shockwaves through it, which normally wouldn't be too dangerous, but when a building was intentionally set alight, even if built to withstand the flames longer, it was still weakened enough that the walls and supports started to crumble nearly immediately.
Midoriya's eyes tracked the upper part of the building as it broke away and fell towards them. He heard his classmates yell something but didn't hear the words. All he saw, all he heard was this multi-ton piece of debris. As Shiozaki moved to wrap herself, Tsuburaba and him in vines to protect themselves from, and Tsuburaba created as large an air shield as he could to soften the blow, her vines never reached him as his temperature skyrocketed, and his flesh and bone burned away.
"Midoriya!" Shiozaki cried out when she realised what was about to happen right. The debris came down on them with an earth-shaking crash, followed by an equally devastating explosion as the fuel used to keep the buildings alight, typically released slowly, burned all at once.
Coughing through the dust and smoke, the villain waved away the dust to see what he had done and smiled. The entire street had been buried in rubble, and while he must have caught a few unlucky bastards in that attack, he did what they had been brought in to do, which made it worth it. "Fuck man, was that necessary?" Someone asked him, only slightly disturbed by the death.
"It did take a lot more effort to care for those brats than I thought, but then again, they're U.A students, a cut above the rest." Turning to leave, he was going to signal Shigaraki that he had done what was expected of him, but he heard something, and the rubble started to shift. Looking back at it, they saw that it wasn't just the rock and steel settling; someone was moving underneath it.
"What the hell?" Someone asked as the rubble wasn't just shifting. No, it was melting, the heat coming from the debris rising like a supersized heater left on for hours. The rock, steel-all of it started to melt, turning red hot as emerald flames started leaking out from beneath it all, which should have been impossible; that kid, that monster, should have been crushed!
Before they could even say process this, nevermind say a word, the half-melted debris exploded, bits and pieces of superhot concrete, brick and steel flying about like the worst kind of shrapnel, more than a few being unlucky enough to get tagged as they fell over, screaming in pain as the fragments or liquefied debris burned into their flesh.
But that was nothing compared to the sight that awaited them, as a demon had crawled its way out of hell and came to collect their souls.
Midoriya stood, his form wholly transformed into his walking volcano form, his hero costume all but burned away and in its place, only the armoured portions remained, with the armour having slid around his body to cover more of it. The same was true for Koharu as the snake; however, unlike in training, where she merely copied what Izuku looked like when he changed, now she was far larger, her body length at least 6m with a with and weight body equal to 3 anacondas fused together and made from rock and fire.
Around the two lay their classmates, completely fine and untouched by the heat or the flames the boy and his serpent put out. The same could be said for the defeated villains caught in that attack, as none of them was hurt. Looking up, the villains felt their hearts crumble and give way to fear as Midoriya's burnt-out eyeholes didn't just house but bleed fury as he couldn't stand the fact that they tried to kill him, kill his friends, kill their own allies because life was precious. It shouldn't be taken so casually, and he won't hear any argument against the contrary.
He had been lucky, as it was not for Koharu and him working in tandem, that they wouldn't have been able to save his classmates and the defeated villains from that building collapse. Once they had been buried, they had to carefully heat the debris around them, keeping Shiozaki's vines safe from the immense heat to shield her and her defence. A fireball was enough to blast it clear once the weight above them was low enough.
But that didn't lower his fury; if anything, it raised it higher as he let out another heat pulse, one echoed by Koharu that made the flames burning around them almost pleasant. The two resembled dual volcanos, seconds from erupting, and it terrified the villains, a primordial fear of predators and flames blaring in their lizard brains, telling them to run and hide, but they couldn't move; their limbs couldn't move.
Retracting her vines, Shiozaki was left speechless by the sight before them. She had known Midoriya was strong; all his showings had proven that, but there was knowing he was strong, and then there was seeing it.
"Is…is that Midoriya?" Tsuburaba was just as awed as she was, weakly pointing towards Midoriya when he asked that question, to which Shiozaki merely nodded her head, having no words.
"How…the fuck are we not roasted right now?" He asked for a follow-up, and Shiozaki's brain was too occupied with the infernos given form to notice that Tsuburaba had just cursed.
"Villains," When Izuku spoke, it wasn't the voice of a soft-spoken, excitable, kind-hearted boy that his classmates had come to know. It wasn't even human as his voice was like the roar of a volcano, the rumblings that could be heard within before he unleashed hell. Slithering forward, the villains took a step back, if not fell over in terror at the terrifying sight glaring them down. "You've invaded our school, threatened our lives, and nearly took them and the lives of others." He had no lips or tongue, but his words carried through his opened jaws like a speaker.
And inside those jaws, within the darkness, they could make out the hints of an inferno being birthed, along with the sound of air being sucked into a vacuum. It was an act mirrored by Koharu, only her jaw fell lower, having unhinged and letting them an equally heart-stopping amount of fiery buildup as she sucked in large amounts of air to feed it. "Repent in the flames."
Midoriya stated, quickly followed by a "Dual Boa Flame!" What came out of their jaws wasn't a mere fireball, but a firestorm as jets of flames, hotter than anything any of them had ever felt, raced out of their jaw towards the villains, whose limbs only now acted on instinct as they turned to flee, but it was futile. As the swirling flames joined together into an even larger one, taking the same of a snake from hell that twisted and turned around as it raced towards and past its targets, creating a massive vortex of flames that trapped the villains within, sucking up most of the air in the area, making it hard to breathe before the infernal constrictor's body squeezed.
The explosion was devastating, grand, and powerful. It didn't merely scorch the street and pavement as it melted 12 inches into the earth. The buildings to the side of the road levelled as the force and heat of the blast were far greater than anything they would have been built to take. The entire zone shook under the force of the blast as emerald flames raced in all directions, namely upwards, rising as all warm gust would.
Those same emerald flames reach the very dome of the zone, burning it as the structure might have been designed to resist the area's heat, but not direct flames, and indeed not his flames. When it was all said and done, they and they alone stood in victory.
"Holy shit…he…he did that?" Tsuburaba asked, sweating like he had just witnessed the gates of hell.
"How could…anything survive that?" Shiozaki looked around the place at the destruction that two creatures, a boy and his snake, had wrought on the area.
Turning to them, Midoriya slithered over, joined by his companion, who watched them with absent eyes. "Are you guys alright?" he asked them. His voice might still have sounded nothing like him, but it was a far cry from what it was before.
"Us…Dude, you didn't just roast them. You might as well have cremated those guys!" Tsuburaba pointed towards what was left of the street, getting a confused sound from Midoriya.
"Cremation? That is for funerals," He moved out of the way, letting them see that the 10 or so villains he had targeted were alive if badly burnt. "They're alive, and I ensured that they'll be fine once the burns heal." As angry as he was, he wasn't going to cripple them, plus those flames would also heal any pre-existing stuff they had, so once they got out of prison in…ten years, if they're lucky, they're at least have their health.
"How the hell is that even possible? The rest of the place looks like melted cheese." Tsuburaba pointed back at the destroyed street as Midoriya crossed his arms.
"Fire had many uses, good and bad. So, I only burned them enough to keep them down." He stated. Before he noticed red on Shiozaki's normally white clothes. "You're hurt."
"What?" Blinking at that statement, Shiozaki looked to her side, where she realised she had a sizable gash and that it was still bleeding strong. Now that she saw it, the pain kicked him as she winced. "Oh, how didn't I notice."
"I failed to protect you. I'm sorry." Midoriya apologised, and while his face was little more than a two-piece stone mask, Shiozaki could still sense how apologetic and sincere he was. No, she corrected herself. She remembered that this was the same boy from before; he just looked different.
"It's okay. If not for you, we'd still be trapped, and they would be lost souls. Besides, it's not so bad." It was terrible, but she could tear off a piece of her robes and tie it up until this situation was handled.
Getting an idea, Midoriya leaned closer. "Let me help you."
"How?" Shiozaki asked as Midoriya lifted his hand, flashing the temperature of the lava.
"Fire."
"You want to burn the wound shut?" Tsuburaba asked, unsure if Midoriya was all right in the head, but what he had seen so far indicated that it was a no on that front.
"Yes, no…." Midoriya contradicted himself, grabbing his stone skull, he rubbed at it aggressively as he worked to word this right, like his therapist had said but then he recalled that he had explained par tof his quirk already. "My fire, it can do good thing, like healing you, like it heals me. Remember, I burn all the time. I'm burning now."
Both seemed squeamish at the reminder that Izuku harmed himself just using his quirk and what he was now could only come about from burning himself to near nothing if there was any flesh or blood left in him.
Despite that, they at least owned him this, as he had done nothing to hint that he didn't know what he was doing or was untrustworthy. "Alright then, but please make it quirk. We can't stay in one place too long." Shiozaki presented her side to him, releasing some of the straps on her robes, which were designed to ensure they never slipped and presented indecent amounts of skin. Though she made sure Tsuburaba couldn't see it.
"Okay. This will sting a bit." Midoriya moved his head to the injured spot, which caused the religious girl to look at how close he was, enough that she could feel how hot his breath was on her injured side.
As she was reminding herself that this wasn't lewd, Tsuburaba passed her a piece of his gear—his belt. "Take this, something to bite on." He offered up a smile, as he didn't have much else. Shiozaki smiled at him as she accepted the gift and placed it in her mouth, nodding towards Midoriya, who breathed out a small stream of emerald flames at her side. The girl bit into the leather as she felt the flames burn her.
Despite the pain, she didn't move away from it, willing her body to remain as still as it could as Midoriya did his work. 30 seconds later, he was done, though Shiozaki felt like each second had been 20. Moving away, she saw that the area had a wicked burn, the flesh still red, but she trusted that it would fade and she'd be fine.
"Why do you need to burn people to heal them?" Tsuburaba asked, wondering why Midoriya couldn't just touch people, or, like he heard Recovery Girl did, give them a little kiss.
"Snake needs to eat itself to renew, flames need to burn away the old to make room for new," Midoriya explained, though he didn't quite recall the name of the comparison he used just. He only recalled reading up about a snake that ate its own tail, destroying itself by self-consumption and creating itself in a way. He wasn't sure if that was correct, but that was how he remembered it.
"The Ouroboros Snake." Shiozaki supplied, getting up and noticing that her wound didn't hurt nearly as much as she thought a severe burn would. As for the topic, she had read about it in her youth, though the books never went into detail about it, only that it was an archaic symbol of fallen faiths and medicine.
"That's it." Midoriya snapped his fingers, but it didn't sound like it should; instead, it sounded like two rocks bashed together to create a spark.
"Well, we should start moving then." Tsuburaba sighed, as he wanted this day to be over, a thought shared by all.
"Yes, I can see the walls clearer now. I think the exit is down this turn." Midoriya pointed out the way, with the group making their way towards the exit. While they hadn't handled all the villains, those who had seen them made the wise choice to stay the hell clear from the hellspawn and his infernal serpent.
A couple of minutes later, a fireball blew open the doors to the conflagration zone, with Midoriya being the first to step out, followed by Koharu and his classmates. The last two were eager to take deep lungfuls of cold air compared to what was inside that zone. Laughing in relief that he could take good breaths, Tsuburaba said, "I'm never working at a fire disaster, not without some fireman's gear."
"Are you good?" Midoriya asked Shiozaki, referring not only to her slowly healing wound but also to the fact that most of her vine hair, which normally reached the small of her back, had been reduced to a shoulder-length bob, with plenty of strands being burnt.
Reaching for her hair, she let some burnt pieces fall. "It's regrettable, but I'll just sever the burnt portions and let fresh ones take their place." She replied before turning her attention to Midoriya, who was still burning as only Koharu had shifted back to normal and returned to her spot around his shoulders. "More importantly, are you alright?"
"I ate some fires on the way here. I'm good," Midoriya replied, as he felt he could keep this form up for another 20 minutes, 25 if he pushed it. But while they had cleared their zone, two others were on their sides. To the left Flood zone, though, he wondered why it was given that name when it more resembled regular maritime rescue work. To the right was the mountain zone, which, compared to the scene to their left, he could pick up some severe fighting, and if he was hearing this right, he could make out Monoma loudly gloating.
So they were fine on that front, though he would only be a little help in the water zone, not when it's a direct field counter to him. Even if he returned to normal, his body wouldn't be able to sustain a high enough temperature for much use. He'd boil the water and anyone near him if he remained like this.
But that left the main route out of here, through the main plaza. Even from here, they could make out that Vlad was still fighting or at least keeping the villains busy. They'd need to get closer to see details, and he wanted to do that as that…thing worried him.
"So what now? Do we head along the wall for the entrance, or do we try to see if anyone needs help in the flood zone?" Tsuburaba asked as they might have escaped the fire, but a lot was still happening around them.
"I think I should go to the central." Midoriya's gaze locked onto the plaza in the distance, even as his classmates looked towards him.
"Midoriya, are you sure. We don't know anything about that unholy creature, but this might not be the wisest move." Shiozaki asked, as they had already had this discussion. While she wanted nothing more than to destroy that insult to God's providence, she wasn't so foolish to assume she could take on something that could be powerful enough to contend against All Might.
Turning to her, she sensed he was just as cautious and concerned as she was. "Even if that's true, I can't just sit back and let Vlad handle everyone alone. I know he told us to run, but I don't think that's been an option for a while now."
"Besides, I won't be any good in the water zone," Midoriya admitted, which made sense to Tsuburaba and Shiozaki, who focused on what they'd do them as they couldn't follow him.
"Alright then, I don't have much left, but my vines should be useful for aiding anyone in need in the flood zone." Shiozaki could pull people from the water and restrain villains from giving any she finds safe passage to dry land.
Tsuburaba scratched his head. "I can create air platforms, but if they're villains there, they could break them, and I can't do much underwater. I'll head for the mountains then." Monoma's gloating might be just barely heard, but Monoma wasn't their strongest by any metric. So he would feel better if he saw Monoma and whoever else with him was handling things alright, then just assume so.
"Okay, good luck, guys. Please keep me safe." Midoriya nodded as they all had their destinations.
"May the Lord watch over us." Shiozaki clasped her hands together, and seemingly out of nowhere, a spotlight shined on her while the area around her darkened. Midoriya, Tsuburaba, and Koharu were confused as to what had just happened before they decided they'd figure it out later and split up. Midoriya's snake-like lower half burned a trail into the concrete pavement as he raced over to help Vlad out and ensure that the body count remained at 0.
"And that's the last of them!" Tetsutetsu huffed as he punched the lights out of the last standing villain. Around him were the knocked-out bodies of the rest, most having the bad luck of not having suitable quirks to fight him and instead using weapons, weapons that shattered against his steel skin at worst or just flat out didn't work at best. Frankly, while he was happy he handled them, it was a little unsatisfying to have such an advantage over them that he wouldn't even call this a fight.
Meanwhile, the villains who had tried to fight Honenuki wished they had gone against him. Where Tetsutetsu was like an unstoppable object, Honenuki was an untouchable one with a simple touch. Their weapons and the ground beneath them became soft as mud, and they all sank into it till only their heads were above ground.
"You know, if you guys had done your homework, maybe you wouldn't be in this situation. If you had sent me to the water zone, you would have had a better chance." Honenuki commented, looking at the over 30 people he had trapped in the earth with some disappointment. They came at him and Tetsutetsu with 50 people, and they didn't even get the two students to break a sweat.
"We… didn't even stand a chance, as soon as he dropped in…" one of the villains said in shock and disbelief.
"What the hell, man? What does U.A. teach their brats." Another asked as this wasn't even a fight. It was a massacre.
"I would say it's less a question of why we're good and why you're so bad," Honenuki replied, as they were just that terrible. Frankly, guys like this were better suited for robbing small stores and mugging old people.
"And these punks thought they could take someone as manly as All Might? Not even in their dreams." Tetsutetsu shook his head as he wasn't the smartest. He could admit that, but you'd have to be a special kind of idiot to think people like this, even with numbers, could even make All Might sweat.
Honenuki agreed with his sentiment. "And yet, they still decided to come along with this attack. That either means they're all idiots or that they have reason to think they had a shot." When he saw them coming in, he thought there was a force of elites, but that was quickly disproven. However, he also noticed that they weren't the only ones either.
"If I'm recalling things right, besides the mist villain, the one that seems to be their warp gate user, there were 2 others that seemed like a real threat." He didn't catch their names, but both that muscled bond bird…thing and the pale man with hands for accessories seemed dangerous, with it looking like the latter was in charge of this entire affair.
"These guys were just meant to be expendable fodder, to keep us and the rest of the teachers distracted while whatever plan they had to face All Might was put into action, which leads to my question." He concluded, walking up to one of his prisoners who flinched at the sight of Honenuki's helmet, unable to make heads or tails on what the boy was feeling.
"What is it? And please hurry. We don't have time to waste, but I can always bury you up till your noses if you want." Honenuki threatened, which made the villain he was talking to whimper before he spilt his guts, with Tetsutetsu to the side, making a note to never piss off Honenuki.
And that is that! Another chapter is done. 2 of the 6 zones have been cleared, and those students can head to other spots to help. Also, this chapter didn't come out too long, which is a plus for me as new word limit aside, I am trying to keep things manageable, especially as my attention can't be spent on one story for too long, made all the worse by the fact I have a few WIPs in the making, though much like SongBird, none are on a fixed upload date. What I have at present is enough, as aside from 2 weeks a month, I'm posting something every weekday.
Regardless, if you liked this chapter, please like it, follow me and leave a comment. The next upload will be on March 26th.
