CHAPTER FIVE

The two, both exhausted from work and the emotional roller coaster they had to go through, had slept throughout the rest of the flight. They left Seattle around nine in the evening, by the time they arrived at New York it was around four in the morning, so sleep was indeed welcomed by both doctors.

The neonatal surgeon was awakened by the sound of the speakers as the captain announces that they will be landing shortly. The older woman slowly opened her eyes, only to see that her hand was being held by the woman that was sleeping beside her. Smiling softly at their joint hands, Addison used her other hand to shake the blonde's arm, trying to wake her up to buckle up for the landing.

The younger woman's eyes fluttered open as she felt someone shaking her awake, she looked around confused at first, but after a few seconds she remembered where she was and who she was with. "Slept well Grey?" Said the redhead beside her. She nodded her head still a little groggy from sleep, "We're landing already?" She asked, voice a little raspy.

Addison nodded her head smiling at the sleepy blonde, "Yeah, so we need to fix ourselves and buckle up." Meredith made a move to fix her hair, it was only then did she notice their hands and blushed at the thought of clinging to Addison. "Oh um, I'm sorry I didn't realize" she stuttered, to which Addison replied with a chuckle. "It's okay, I don't mind."

Meredith reluctantly lets go of Addie's hand because she really needs to buckle her seat belt. "So I didn't get to know which hospital you'll be doing your fellowship" said Addison as she fixed her hair and face. The blonde fixed hers as well before answering "Oh I'm doing my fellowship at Mount Sinai, they gave me an offer I can't pass up."

Addison smiled, it seems like she'll be seeing the blonde quite often then. The redhead used to work at Mount Sinai before she moved to Seattle and then LA. "Can I know what the offer is? What is so great about it that you were willing to turn down other hospitals?" The younger woman smiled brightly, remembering the offer she was given "Aside from the big paycheck, they allowed me to do a double fellowship in general and neuro."

"Wait, general? I thought you chose neuro as a specialty?" said the confused redhead, tilting her head a little. "I actually couldn't decide between the two so I ended up taking both specialties, so now I'm double board certified like you" the blonde woman smiled.

It was hard to do two specialties at once. Chief Webber almost disagreed had she not promise that she'll do her best and her current record does show she has the talent for both so they allowed her in the end. Cristina would have been double certified too had she not been in love with cardio already. It was challenging but it was so worth it.

"Anyways they also offered me my own research lab and funding after they heard I was planning to do a clinical trial for Alzheimer's and I also get to learn from world renowned neuro and general surgeons like Dr. Philips and Dr. Chang, they also promised to let me travel to other sister hospitals for more exposure."

Addison was at awe, if she had that offer she would accept it too. Seeing the blonde speak with such passion, she knows she deserves it, she was a promising surgeon after all. "Well I can't blame you, that's amazing! I'm shocked though that Richard allowed you to leave without a fight" she chuckled, remembering how upset Richard was when she gave her own letter of resignation, "Considering you're technically one of the hospital's greatest assets and his pseudo daughter!"

"Oh he did, he was willing to offer something greater, he even threatened to chain me up if it only wasn't illegal to do so" Meredith chuckled remembering Richard's red face during their video call after she told him she was leaving through email. "He only said yes after I told him my other reason, and let's just say he grew angrier but conceded at the end."

Richard Webber has always had a soft spot for Meredith Grey, he treated the young woman as his own daughter. He was there to change Meredith's diapers when both her parents were busy, even his wife Adele grew fond of her despite being the child of the woman her husband was screwing behind her back. It was no surprise to anyone that the Chief was fond of the young surgeon, in fact many were, as Meredith is easy to like.

They were silent for a while as the plane began to descend. "You mentioned it earlier that you were going to New York for a consult and you're staying there for a few weeks right?" The blonde said, remembering their conversation hours ago before both fell asleep. "Yes, I'm actually going to Mount Sinai as well" replied the redhead, curious as to why the younger woman had asked.

"Oh, so I guess I'll be seeing you quite often then?" Said Meredith, she can't explain why the idea of spending time with Addison was making her insides all tingly. The older woman nodded her head and giggled "I guess so, maybe we could even work on some cases together."

"Where are you staying while in New York, if I remember correctly, Callie told me you actually sold your brownstone?" The blonde mused. Addison sighed a little, sometimes the Latina can't keep her mouth shut when it comes to gossip "yeah that's right, I actually sold it a few years back since it held too many memories" she shook her head remembering the last few days she spent there.

"I'm planning to stay at a hotel near the hospital for the time being" Addison added, when she suddenly gasped as she remembered something "Shit."

"What is it Addie?" asked the blonde when she noticed how the other woman paled.

"I- Uh I think I forgot to book a hotel, I got too caught up with work and catching up with everyone that I forgot" Addison said rubbing her temples, frustrated at her sudden realization. How on earth did she forget? Where would she stay now? She's sure that most hotels near the hospital are full by now since there is also a medical conference being held in the area.

"I can't stay in the Hampton's since it's too far, I can't stay with Savvy since she's still on vacation with Wei—"before Meredith could stop herself she interrupted the redhead's rambling, "Well you could stay with me if you like? I could use the company."

Addison was shocked, she didn't expect the blonde to offer her home to her. Meredith smiled, she too was shocked but she wouldn't mind at all, in fact it would be great to have someone to talk to after long days of work.

"Mer are you sure? I don't want to impose, I could still find a hotel" the redhead said. She wouldn't mind rooming with Meredith but she doesn't want the other woman to feel uncomfortable in her own home.

"Addison you and I both know how hard it is to find a decent hotel in New York at such short notice and I have an extra room you could use, and as a bonus we could drive to work together" Meredith shrugged. "Okay, thank you Meredith, but don't hesitate to kick me out if you want, okay?" the older woman conceded. The blonde chuckled and nodded her head.

The plane landed shortly after and both women made a move to get their bags to get off the plane. They kept talking as they walked to get their suitcases from the reception of the VIP lounge, flying first class indeed has its perks. The two surgeons then moved through the busy airport, and stopped to eat breakfast at a café that served tasty waffles. They shared stories as they ate and after they made their way towards the pickup area. By the time they were out of the airport it was already light out.

"Let me call us a cab" volunteered the redhead, it was the right thing to do, thought Addison since Meredith has already offered to let her stay at her place. She was about to walk towards the waiting cabbies when the blonde grabbed her arm. Addison turned to Meredith, confused as to why she stopped her, she opened her mouth to talk when Meredith spoke first.

"There's no need Addie, someone's going to pick us up" said the blonde as she scanned the crowd, looking for a familiar man. Addison nodded her head, thinking that maybe the younger woman had asked a friend to pick them up. They stood there for a few minutes waiting and talking when two men dressed in suits walked towards them.

Suddenly it was like a switch was flipped, and the smile Meredith was wearing was suddenly replaced by an emotionless face. It confused Addison, wondering if she said something wrong, until she saw the men approaching them.

"Good morning Dr. Grey" said the shorter man between the two, bowing slightly. Addison raised her eyebrow, curious as to who the men were. "I'm Peter Jones, and this is Tom West, we were sent by Ms. Young to fetch you." The men offered their hands for Meredith to shake.

The blonde shook their hands, unfazed by the men "Good morning Peter, Tom, this is Dr. Addison Montgomery, she will be staying with me." The men then turned to the redhead to shake her hand as well.

"I was expecting Stephen to pick us up today" said Meredith as she gave her bag to Peter, her face void of emotion. Tom then took the older woman's bag from her and they started walking.

The two women were in between both men, Peter being in front of them with Meredith's bags and Tom behind them with the other woman's bags. Addison had never seen this side of Meredith before, she was cold and distant. The Meredith she knew was always warm despite being, what the blonde would describe as, dark and twisty.

"Stephen is still on leave today, visiting his family" this time it was Tom who spoke. "Okay then, I expect that you two know where to go?" asked the blonde, as they walked through the crowd to which both men replied with a nod.

They approached a sleek black Mercedes Benz, and Peter opened the door for both women. As the men were busy placing their bags in the trunk Addison turned to Meredith and asked what she wanted to ask since she saw the two men. "Meredith, who are these men?"

Meredith turned to Addison and smiled, which made the older woman relax. "Oh, um, they're my security," The older woman raised her eyebrows, as if asking the woman to elaborate. Why would Meredith Grey need security? "I guess if you're staying with me, I'll have to explain it to you later" she finished as the two men entered the car.

It seems like there are a lot of things that the younger woman is hiding. New York Meredith is so different from Seattle Meredith. The ride was silent, Addison wanted to ask more questions since she was still so confused but remained quiet and just looked outside the window as they passed the busy streets of New York. She'll ask more about it later, when it was only the two of them.

The car stopped in front of a tall building, which turned out to be a luxury hotel. Monet Hotel read the sign on the wall of the entrance. Addison knows this hotel, her family would stay here when they were in New York. "Meredith, I thought we were heading to your apartment? This is a hotel" said the redhead as she turned to face the blonde who was closing her eyes. The two men exited the car to gather their bags, but the two women didn't make a move to go out.

"Hm? We are" came the younger woman's short reply. Meredith opened her eyes and stared at Addison's eyes, smiling before looking behind her at the hotel's entrance. The younger woman's eyebrows suddenly furrowed and mumbled something that sounded like "Why the hell are they standing there?" the blonde let out a frustrated sigh before turning back to Addison and smiled "I'll explain everything later when we get settled in."

The redhead just nodded her head at the blonde as the car doors opened. Both women stepped out of the car and walked towards the hotel's entrance and lobby. As they walked through the doors, it was only then did Addison notice a small group of hotel staff waiting for them at the lobby. "Miss Meredith, we are happy that you are back!" said a woman whose tag says General Manager, to which the blonde only replied with a small smile and a short nod.

"Your room is clean and ready for you and your guest, we even cleaned Dr. Avery's room just in case." The same woman spoke again. "That's not necessary, Jackson is not with me this time, but here with me is Dr. Addison Montgomery, and I expect you to treat her with utmost respect, am I understood?" said the blonde, voice firm but still with a small smile. Addison's eyebrow raised at the mention of Jackson's name, she didn't know that Meredith and Jackson were close. The staff nodded their head and greeted Addison, to which the redhead smiled in return.

"And please it's Doctor, not Miss or Ma'am" Meredith added before turning away and walking towards the elevators with Addison in tow. She despised being called 'miss' after the lunch event she and Derek went to, she's a doctor damn it, so she would be addressed as such. She did not go through years of medical school and residency only to be called 'miss'.

The hotel was grand and luxurious, but it was nothing new for Addison, she would stay in hotels like this when she goes on vacation or on a business trip. Despite being used to such luxury, Addison was still shocked, she didn't expect this when Meredith offered her a place to stay.

She quietly followed the blonde towards what seems to be like a private elevator. The younger woman pulled out a key card and swiped it on the key slot to open the elevator doors. Both women stepped inside and when the doors closed Addison immediately faced the blonde and bombarded her with questions. "Okay now tell me what the hell is going on?"

Meredith took a deep breath before facing the redhead with a mischievous smile "What do you mean Addie?" it seems like she really needs to tell the older woman the truth about her huh. She never thought this through, and it's starting to sound like a bad idea, but she likes Addison's company so she has no other choice but to talk.

"You told me we were staying at your apartment, you didn't tell me it was a hotel! Let me help in paying the bill then if we're staying here, this must have cost a lot" said Addison as she ran her fingers through her red hair. She opened her mouth to talk again when Meredith chuckled "Don't worry about it Addison it's already been taken care of."

She was still facing the blonde as the elevator doors opened "No, let me at least help in pay—wow." The older woman let out a gasp as she looked around her. When Meredith told her she had an apartment, she did not expect it to be a spacious and grand penthouse.

"I told you, there is nothing to worry about. I don't need to pay when I already own the place." Said Meredith as she walked across the floor towards the big white fluffy couch.

"Who the hell are you Meredith Grey?" said the still shocked redhead.
