Moana found her father and most of the villagers gathered in a large hut reserved for group meetings and celebrations. She could hear the villagers raising their concerns about the current issues going on on the island.
"The coconuts are turning black."
"What about the fish?"
"It happens all over the island."
"Please, please. Settle down." Said Tui.
A few of the villagers kept talking.
"What are you going to do?"
"Who will dig new fields?"
"We'll find a way... We..." Said Tui trying to come up with a solution to calm his people.
Moana took this opportunity to speak and make her presence known.
"Can stop the darkness. Save our island. There is a cave with boats. Huge canoes. We can take them to find Maui. Make him restore the heart. We were voyagers. We can voyage again." Said Moana as she held the heart up for all to see.
Tui looked at his daughter with uncertainty and a hint of disapproval. Moana faced him.
"You told me to help our people. This is how we can help our people." Said Moana handing her father the heart.
Tui just scowled at the heart, before grabbing a torch and headed towards the cave with the boats.
"Dad. What are you doing?" Asked Moana.
"I should've burned those boats a long time ago." Said Tui with anger and determination in his voice.
"No! Don't! We have to find Maui. We have to restore the heart. Bring peace between the mermaids and krakens. It'll save our island and bring pace to the world!" Begged Moana racing after her father.
"There is no heart. This...this is just a rock." Said Tui handing the heart back to Moana as he prepared to go into the cave.
"No!" Cried Moana.
If Tui destroyed the boats there would no way Moana to head out to sea. Moana knew nothing about building boats that could cross the sea. Before Moana could try anything to stop Tui a panicked villager suddenly ran up to them.
"Chief! It's your mother! She's fallen ill!"
"Mother." Said Tui as he began to turn away from the cave and head back to the village.
Moana raced ahead of her father and found her family's hut. Tala laid in the hut looking tired and weak with a blanket on her. Moana knelt by Tala as Tui ran in and joined her alongside Sina. The family members looked at their elder as they each placed a hand on her. After awhile Tui removed his hand, stood, and took a few steps away as he became overwhelmed by grief. Sina went to her husband's side to console him. Tala looked up at Moana weakly.
"Go." Said Tala.
"Gramma." Said Moana with tears in her eyes.
"Go." Said Tala
"Not now. I can't."
"You must. The ocean chose you. Follow the fish hook." Said Tala as she removed the necklace she wore and opened up the shell on it and carefully put the heart in it before closing it and handing it to Moana.
"Grandma." Said Moana not wanting to leave Tala.
"Do not fear Moana. You won't be alone on your journey. The sea is a vast place and you will find those who can aid when you find Maui, you grab him by the ear. You say... I am Moana of Motunui. You will board my boat, sail across the sea, and restore the heart of Te Fiti." Said Tala.
"I... I can't leave you." Said Moana.
"There is nowhere you could go that I won't be with you. Go." Said Tala with a small smile.
Moana just nodded her head as she she slowly stood up and stepped away. Tala's eyes closed as Tui and Sina knelt down next to her. Moana took one last look at her grandmother before heading out of the hut in a hurry. She quickly grabbed a bag and began going to some of the huts used for storing food and packed it with what she could find. Moana wasn't ok with stealing any food especially with what was going on with the island, but this was a important journey and hopefully with the heart restored everything would be back to normal and there would be plenty of food to go around. She dropped a coconut and it rolled across the floor to the feet of Sina who entered the hut. Moana looked up at Sina who looked at her. Moana temporarily feared that her mother would try and stop her, but instead of saying anything Sina picked the coconut up and handed it to Moana and the she helped Moana grab supplies.
The supplies were soon gathered and the two women looked at one another before they tightly embraced one another.
"I don't fully understand why you must do this, but grandma says you must go. I would go with you...but, your father is going...through a lot with everything. If he lost all his family...I'm afraid it would destroy him completely." Said Sina.
"Thank you mom. I promise I will come back as soon as I can and everything will be fixed." Said Moana.
"Take care and stay safe." Said Sina as she kissed Moana on the forehead.
Moana nodded in thanks as she went to the cave and went about loading it up and preparing to set sail. Moana's pet pig Pua came into the cave and watched his master get ready. Pua eyed the sea nervously thinking about the last ill fated trek out to sea. He feared the ocean, but he loved Moana and was loyal to her. The little pig took a deep breath and jumped into the boat as Moana began to push it into the water.
"Thank you Pua, I promise you I'll do everything in my power to make sure this little voyage turns out better." Said Moana to the pig as she pushed the boat into the water and hopped on.
The boat exited the cave and into the open water as it began to float away from the island. As it got further away away Moana turned to look at her home and wondered if her parents and fellow villagers would be ok as she went on her journey. There was a flash of light from beneath the water and Moana and Pua saw a enormous manta ray with glowing blue marks along it's body race beneath the water creating a large wave in it's wake as it headed to the boat. The wave lifted the boat and carried it past the reef and further out to sea before vanishing. Moana and Pua blinked their eyes at the odd development as Moana began to realize that the strange manta ray had been her grandma, who had returned as a manta ray and had given her a little aid.
"Thanks grandma. Looks like we both got our wishes granted. Now I wish I can have some aid to help me accomplish this quest and save everyone." Said Moana.
And like some wishes made before Moana's new wish was going to be granted as well as she was soon to be provided with some special aid for her quest.
To be continued.
