Chapter Six
Later that evening, Samuel and Alexandra left the restaurant to walk back to the hotel.
"I really enjoyed that Sam." Alexandra smiled as she leaned on her boyfriend.
"Me too!" Samuel agreed "They did good food there! We should go back before the trips over!"
"Sounds like a plan to me!" Alexandra replied.
The couple made it back to the hotel and up to their room where they both started to undress and get into their nightclothes.
Alexandra changed into some grey sweatpants and a black baggy tee-shirt with a picture of the Northern Lights on it whilst Samuel dressed in some red pyjama bottoms with a black vest top.
"So how shall we spend the rest of the evening babe?" Samuel asked.
Alexandra tapped her chin as she thought for a moment then looked out the window at the night sky and how warm the evening was.
"I say we enjoy some wine on the balcony." She said, "I believe we can steal one from the mini bar?" she said mischievously.
Samuel laughed back.
"Don't worry babe!" he said, "This one's on me!" he held up some dollar bills "You make the area nice and comfy, and I'll be right there!"
Alexandra agreed and she picked up some spare cushions from the bed and walked over to the balcony where there was a seated area, and she placed the cushions on it as well as picked up a blanket so they could snuggle underneath it.
After a couple of minutes, Samuel arrived with a bottle of white wine and two glasses.
He wasted no time in pouring himself and Alexandra a glass each and they toasted each other and to the upcoming tournament the following night.
"You feeling nervous?" Alexandra asked.
Samuel sipped his wine and cocked an eyebrow.
"Nervous?" he asked "Nah! Not at all! After winning the last fight, I got this in the bag!"
"I do love your confidence!" Alexandra gushed "That's what I always love about you! That you're confident but not arrogant."
"That's me babe!" Samuel grinned.
Alexandra chuckled.
"Your parents sure raised you right, to be who you are!" Alexandra said, "I wonder how they're doing?"
Samuel looked at the sky dreamily as he thought of his family back in Texas.
"I texted mom earlier to say all was well, and she said she hopes we're having a good time together here." He reported.
Alexandra smiled as she thought of Samuel's family and the first time she met them, and it was her first trip in a long time out of Alaska.
Flashback
It had been six months Since their first meeting then five months after Samuel and Alexandra started dating and becoming serious.
After Samuel had met and hit it off with Alexandra's parents, Samuel decided to invite his new girlfriend to Corsicana Texas to meet his family.
Alexandra was very nervous, but she agreed to go with him and after taking a week of leave from the hospital they set off for Texas.
It was a sunny Sunday afternoon and Samuel lead Alexandra down a quiet neighbourhood, they had booked into a local hotel nearby the night before and had arranged to meet for Sunday lunch with Samuel's family.
Alexandra was dressed in smart grey jeans and a white blouse, and she had done up her hair some was tied up behind her head whilst the rest hung loose, and she wore a little bit of make-up.
Samuel meanwhile was dressed in smart blue jeans and a black shirt with a red tie whilst his long hair was tied back in a ponytail.
As they walked through the neighbourhood, Alexandra looked around, it was very different to the bustling city of Anchorage and the only life that could be seen on this fine Sunday was people walking their dogs, the odd bike rider, or some families out for walks to work up an appetite before their big lunch.
"Wow." She said as she gazed around "You live in a nice neighbourhood."
"That we do!" Samuel smiled "It's been a while since I've been back here, after I started staying in Alaska."
"You happy to be home?" Alexandra asked, "Even though you seem happy in Anchorage?"
Samuel nodded.
"I love your home city, because I'm with you," He smiled "But like we know, home is where the heart is!"
He soon stopped outside a two-story house which had a couple of cars outside.
"Ah here we are!" he said with a smile.
Alexandra looked over at it.
"Your home?" she asked as she looked at the clean white house and the greenery around it along with some pretty flowers and a couple of trees around it.
"Uh huh!" Samuel said as he grasped Alexandra's hand and lead her up the driveway.
"Are you nervous?" he asked.
"I am yeah," Alexandra said in an honest tone as she nodded her head "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't, Do I look okay?" she gestured to herself,
"No need to be nervous babe." Samuel smiled "They'll love you. And you look as amazing and beautiful as ever." He kissed her hand and Alexandra blushed.
"Thanks hun." She gushed.
"So, you ready to introduce me to your folks?" Samuel asked.
"I think so!" Alexandra said as they walked to the front door and Samuel rang the bell then gave his girlfriend a kiss on the temple for reassurance.
After a minute the door opened and on the other side was a young black girl in her teens with wavy black hair that went to the middle of her back, brown eyes, and resembled Samuel in looks.
As soon as Samuel saw her his eyes lit up and he grinned.
"Chrissy!" he exclaimed happily.
Alexandra smiled at the teen girl and waved shyly.
"Heya!" she said grinning widely.
"Sam!" the teenaged girl ran up to Samuel and hugged him tightly around the waist "You're back home!
Samuel hugged her back.
"I sure am! I've missed you kiddo!" he chuckled as he rubbed her back up and down.
Alexandra smiled cutely as she watched her boyfriend and the young teen girl embrace then she saw her look in her direction.
"Oh, you must be Alex?" she said.
"That's right Chrissy." Samuel said as he loosened his grip and gestured his hand to Alexandra and introduced her.
"Alex, this is my little sister Christine. And Chrissy, this is my girlfriend, Alexandra."
Alexandra smiled and held out her hand.
"Hi Chrissy, it's so nice to meet you!"
Christine in turn took Alexandra's hand and shook it.
"It's nice to meet you too!" she said brightly.
"Sam has spoken so much about you" Alexandra said.
"Has he really?" Christine asked.
Alexandra nodded.
"Good things, I hope?" Christine asked in a hopefully tone and batting her eyelashes cutely.
"Of course! Nothing less!" Samuel grinned.
Christine led Samuel and Alexandra inside and as she did, a delicious smell of food hit their noses.
"Mmm, mom's cooking!" Samuel grinned "How I've missed it!"
Alexandra also sniffed and she smiled.
"Wow! Something smells good!" she commented as she felt her mouth water, it felt like ages since breakfast, and she could feel herself getting hungry.
"Come on in!" Christine said as she took Samuel and Alexandra's hands and further into the house and Alexandra saw many photos on the wall showing family members as well as exciting activities, they had taken part in.
"Mom and Dad can't wait to see you again and meet Alex!" Christine squeaked.
"And I can't wait to meet them too!" Alexandra smiled.
Just then, a voice was heard from where Alexandra believed was the kitchen.
"Christine? Have they arrived?"
"Yes Mama, they're both here!" Christine called back.
"Awww wonderful!" the voice called back and soon a middle-aged woman walked into the hallway and beamed as she saw Samuel and Alexandra.
"Hey mom!" Samuel called walking over and embracing her.
"Sweetheart! My darling Sammy!" the woman gushed as she hugged Samuel back and kissed him.
"Aww I've missed you my baby boy!"
Samuel grimaced a bit at the fact his mother was treating him like a kid, but he took it and hugged her back whilst Alexandra chuckled.
"Missed you too Mom!" Samuel said patting his mum's back.
"It's so nice to see you!" the woman grinned then she turned to Alexandra who again grinned nervously.
"And this must be the girl I've been hearing about!" she said before letting go of her son and walking over to Alexandra who held out her hand for her to shake yet the ebony haired girl was caught off guard when Samuel's mother wrapped her arms around her in a tight bear hug that almost took her breath away!
"Hello my dear!" the woman said squeezing her "I'm Gloria!" she then released Alexandra who took a deep breath.
"Hello," she panted "I'm Alexandra..."
This time it was Samuel's turn to chuckle, and he nodded.
"That's right mom. Meet Alexandra. Alex, this is my mom, Gloria."
"So wonderful to meet you!" Gloria grinned "So I finally meet the girl who captured my son's heart?"
Alexandra blushed a deeper red and Christine giggled.
"She's blushing!"
"Well, I guess…" Alexandra shrugged yet she went even redder.
"Oh don't be modest dear!" Gloria smiled "I have to say, he made a good choice when he met you!" she winked.
Samuel nodded in agreement as he smiled at Alexandra.
"Awww you are kind!" Alexandra gushed.
"Not kind, honest my dear!" Gloria said in a firm tone wagging a finger.
"She always has been!" Samuel winked with a Smile.
"I'm sure Daddy will like you too!" Christine piped up.
"Oh yes!" Gloria said, "he will too for sure pumpkin!"
"Speaking of, where is the old man?" Samuel asked.
"I think he was upstairs making the beds!" Gloria replied looking up the stairs.
"You got a lovely house Mrs Henry" Alexandra said as she looked around the hallway "You sure have done the place great!"
"Thank you, sweetie!" Gloria replied, "And never mind the formalities, you may call be Gloria, or Mama Glory if you wish!" she added.
Alex frowned within.
"Mama?" she thought "She must really like me? And rather quickly too!"
But she smiled and nodded.
"Okay!" she said.
"She loves that nickname!" Samuel reported with a chuckle as he stood next to Alexandra then looked up the stairs.
"Hmm, maybe I should go up and surprise dad?" he asked.
"Go for it son! He would love it!" Gloria smiled "You go and get him whist I finish up with the lunch!"
"I'll help!" Christine volunteered as she followed her mother into the kitchen.
"Sure thing!" Samuel said then turned to Alexandra.
"Would you like to come with me?" he asked.
"Of course!" Alexandra smiled "I'm looking forward to meeting your dad!"
As the couple ascended the stairs, Alexandra took a moment to look at the framed photos and ornaments that adorn the wall.
"You like them?" Samuel asked as he saw his girlfriend studying the many photo memories.
Alexandra nodded.
"Yeah." She said "Wow, you've done a lot together!"
"We sure have!" Samuel smiled "We all have stories to tell behind these pictures!"
Alexandra hovered her fingers over a couple that stuck out, showing the family on a beach together.
"Where were those taken?" she asked.
Samuel had a look.
"Those?" he asked, "That's when we went to South Padre Island."
Alexandra thought for a moment, yet the name didn't ring a bell.
"South Padre Island?" she asked, "Not sure I'm familiar with it."
"It's an island near southern Texas." Samuel explained "One of the most amazing places we've ever been to!"
"What's it like?" Alexandra asked.
"It is a beautiful Island Alex;you'd love it there!" Samuel said, "So much so, Christine didn't want to leave."
"Oh?" Alexandra asked.
"Yeah!" Samuel said, "We rented a cute convo there and spent almost every day on the beach, having picnics, swimming in the sea, playing on the warm sand!"
"Really?" Alexandra asked, "It's been a while since I went the beach."
"Is it now?" Samuel asked "Well maybe one day we can change that! We're hoping to go next summer and you're welcome to join us!"
Alexandra's eyes lit up.
"Really?" she asked, "Well in that case, I'll make sure I get the leave!"
"Great!" Samuel cheered and leaned in to kiss Alexandra when a door opened at the top of the stairs and a tall black man who resembled Samuel yet slightly older appeared.
"Hello there!" he called out "Sonny Boy! You're home!"
Samuel grinned as he looked up.
"There's the old man!" he smiled.
"Daddy! Sam's home!" Christine's voice was heard from the bottom of the stairs.
"I can see that baby girl! And who is this fine lady?" he asked looking at Alexandra.
"Hello sir!" Alexandra said, "I'm Alex!"
"Ah!" the man exclaimed "You must be the Alexandra I've heard so much about!"
"That she is!" Samuel said walking over and High fiving his father before hugging him "Hey Dad!"
"Hey kiddo! Welcome home!" the man hugged Samuel then looked at Alexandra before holding out his hand.
"Nice to meet you finally!" he smiled "I'm Billy!"
"You too sir!" Alexandra said before coughing and correcting herself "I mean…Billy." She chuckled.
"Couldn't wait to meet the girl who my boy can't shut up about!" Billy chuckled "Samuel has told us all about you!"
"Did he now?" Alexandra asked.
Billy nodded.
"Indeed!"
"That's amazing!" Alexandra said then looked at Samuel who looked around then at his dad.
"You alright?" she asked.
"Yeah!" Samuel replied, "I was just wondering, where's Bobby?"
Alexandra then realised that there was someone else she hadn't met yet, Samuel's older brother, but before she too could ask, Billy answered.
"Out and about. Has been all morning. Should be back at home about now though" he said."Might have to swing by his apartment later." Samuel shrugged.
"Ah cool," Alexandra smiled "It'll be nice to meet him too."
"Billy! Sam! Alex!" Gloria's voice hollered from downstairs "Foods ready! Come and get it!"
Billy's eyes lit up again.
"Ah perfect timing! Come on you two!" he said as he hurried down the stairs, Samuel and Alexandra following him until they arrived in the large dining room where Gloria and Christine had set everything up.
There were five places set up with plates, knives, forks, spoons, and napkins along with a bowl of mixed salad all tossed, some bread and butter, fried and new potatoes, and boiled vegetables.
"Wow!" Alexandra gasped "Look at all this food! It's enough for a feast!"
"Ah! That's not all!" Christine grinned then looked to the kitchen door which opened.
"Here we are!" Gloria smiled as she entered the dining room with a large pot which she placed in the middle of the table.
"My speciality dish! Broccoli Casserole!" she lifted the lid and showed everyone the contents which consisted of broccoli in a creamy sauce and topped with crispy cheese.
"Knew it!" Samuel said triumphantly.
"Smells wonderful!" Alexandra said as she looked at it.
"Well, don't just stand there gaping!" Gloria laughed "Sit down all of you and I'll dish it all out!"
At those words everyone took their places, Samuel, and Alexandra next to each other on one side, Christine at the end of the table whilst Gloria and Billy sat opposite Samuel and Alexandra.
Gloria served everyone in turn starting with Alexandra being the guest then she served everyone else then before long everyone was tucking in.
"mm mm!" Samuel said as he chewed "You really outdid yourself mom!"
"I'll say she did!" Billy agreed with a mouthful of potatoes.
Christine nodded with bulging cheeks as she enjoyed her food.
Gloria smiled proudly then she took a sip of water before cocking her head at Alexandra.
"So, my dear, our darling Sam has spoken a lot about you!"
"Mhm, what all did he tell us again hun?" Billy asked dreamily.
"That his lady friend is a nurse." Gloria explained.
Alexandra smiled.
"That I am." She said "I'm a registered nurse at Anchorage Hospital"
"She's great at what she does!" Samuel cut in.
"It was how we met, I treated him at my place of work!" Alexandra went on.
"I see!" Gloria said "Well I'm certain he was in good hands?"
"Oh I was mom!" Samuel clarified "Best nurse in the place!" he said making Alexandra blush.
"He sure was an interesting patient." Alexandra said looking at Samuel knowingly.
"Oh?" Gloria asked "How so?"
"How he caught my attention." Alexandra replied to which Samuel chuckled sheepishly.
"I meet him in the emergency room in my hospital and I was the one that treated him," Alexandra explained.
"But there was more to it than that," She added "He did save my life."
As she said that, Alexandra saw Samuel's parents freeze and stare at her and Samuel.
"Whoa whoa whoa, back up. Saved your life?" Billy asked.
What, What?" Christine asked, "Did something happen?"
Alexandra mentally facepalmed and looked at Samuel.
"Foot in mouth..." she mumbled.
"It's okay." Samuel soothed "We should tell them."
"Tell us what?" Billy asked.
Alexandra took a breath and with a comforting look from Samuel she began to speak.
Well, your son's visit to the Emergency Room wasn't the first time we met..." she said.
"Oh?" Gloria asked with a frown as she glanced as Samuel who looked sheepish.
"I was on my way home from work when I was attacked by a mugger." Alexandra explained to which Samuel nodded.
"I happened to be coming down the same street at the time and Instinct popped in and I jumped in and saved her, telling her to get away while I put the mugger in his place!"
"You did what!?" Billy cried almost jumping up, but Gloria stopped him.
"It's true sir!" Alexandra said quickly "he saved me from a thug!"
"Son! What were you thinking!?" Billy demanded glaring at Samuel.
"The first thing that came to mind" Samuel replied, "Stopping some punk from hurting an innocent woman!"
"And he did!" Alexandra said stroking Samuel's hand "And I'm so grateful he did!" she smiled.
"Yeah!" Christine cheered "Big brothers a hero!"
"That he is!" Alexandra said, "He was to me!"
Gloria meanwhile gave a frown yet there was a twinkle in her eyes.
"That he was dears, but Sam," she looked at her son "What if it went wrong?"
Samuel turned to his mother.
"Honestly Mom," he reasoned "The only thing I was thinking about was helping her." He gestured to Alexandra.
"And that's a good thing son!" Gloria said, "But I do worry you know!"
"And she's not the only one!" Billy scolded "You just so happened to leave that detail out!
Alexandra bit her lip feeling guilty as she watched her boyfriend's parents telling him off.
"We worry enough about your brother as it is" Gloria said.
"Your mother's right! But...the important thing is that you're alright." Billy concluded "You and Alex both!"
"We are yes!" Alexandra said smiling at Samuel and he smiled back and nodded.
"You betcha!" he said.
Gloria smiled contently then decided to change the subject.
"So Alex?" she said "Tell me what made you want to be a nurse?"
"Oh Yes," Billy joined in "Inquiring minds want to know!" he chuckled.
Alexandra chuckled as she went pink.
"Well." She said, "To tell you the truth, I didn't always want to be a nurse."
"Really?" Gloria asked raising an eyebrow.
"No," Alexandra shook her head "When I was young, I actually wanted to be an actress or a singer." She blushed "Well I was young and naive back then."
Billy chuckled.
"We all had moments like that growing up!" he laughed.
Alexandra nodded with him.
"For sure!" she said, "When I was in school, I loved doing music and drama, and I loved reading Shakespeare, I was always auditioning for parts in plays and concerts, My first school play role was the back end of the Cow in Jack and Beanstalk!"
"No way!" Christine giggled.
"That's right Chrissy!" Alexandra laughed "I was the back end of the cow! I'll never forget that!"
Alexandra then started laughing harder.
"In fact! The guy who was at the front, on the night, he farted!"
The whole table roared with laughter.
"Oh my stars! He didn't!" Gloria spluttered.
"He did!" Alexandra said to which Christine giggled and Samuel and Billy snickered.
"I don't know what he ate before the show! But it took a lot of willpower not to wallop him!" Alexandra continued.
Everyone laughed and Samuel kissed Alexandra's hand.
"Yeah! That was a moment I never forgot, but it makes me laugh when I remember it!"
"Really hilarious!" Billy said, "We all have moments like that from our childhoods."
"Oh yes darling!" Gloria agreed.
Billy chuckled then looked at Alexandra.
"Anyway, we're so happy to finally meet you and it does look like our Sam's got him a good one!"
"Yeah!" Christine raised her glass of soda pop and Gloria and Billy did the same with their drinks.
"Cheers!" they said, and Alexandra blushed again.
"Aww thanks!" she gushed bashfully, and Samuel just smiled glad that his family approved of his girlfriend.
End Flashback
"I remember that day so fondly hun." Alexandra smiled as she sipped her wine "Your parents were so welcoming and little Chrissy! She was such a sweetie!"
"Still is!" Samuel said "Man! I can't wait to see her again soon!"
Alexandra chuckled.
"I really like her; I wish I had a sister like her!" she sipped her wine and looked at the night sky.
Samuel looked at Alexandra and as he heard the last few words, he felt a niggling feeling in his stomach.
"You do?" he thought to himself then a small smile crept onto his lips.
"Well I have a feeling Chrissy will feel the same way about you love!"
A good flashback of meeting the parents on Samuel's side! Hope you enjoyed it!
