Author's Note: This is my first Inside Out fanfic, so I hope you'll like it. I'm not sure if the emotions can actually eat, but since they could drink in the movies, I suppose they could also eat as well. So please, enjoy, and leave a review telling me how I can improve.

One calm morning, a small figure sat sleepily on a soft turquoise bed, yawning and rubbing her eyes. Envy got up and looked around at the other three beds in the room; one orange, one dark purple and another large pink one. They were empty and neatly made. Envy assumed the owners must have woken up before her.

Yawning again, Envy made her bed and dressed herself for the day ahead. She then headed in the general direction of the kitchen to get breakfast. Today, she was craving cereal and milk. She sighed. Nothing like a great breakfast to start a great day.

She entered the kitchen. Like most of Headquarters, it was a mix of pearly white and purple, with shelves at the sides from bottom to top and a large white dining table. There were three other occupants when she walked in: Joy, Anxiety and Embarrassment. Joy and Anxiety were talking at the table, probably about something to do with Riley, their host. It was Embarrassment who Envy met first because as he was walking out, he didn't notice her entering and nearly trodded on the little emotion.

"Ah! Embarrassment!" Envy screamed with her hands raised to protect herself, and eyes shut.

Embarrassment suddenly saw Envy underneath his raised foot and slowly backed away. Envy put her hands down and sighed in relief but then noticed Embarrassment was shaking, probably terrified that he had almost accidentally squished one of his friends.

"Oh, Embarrassment," said Envy. "It's okay. I know you didn't mean to do that. It could have happened to anyone."

She knew she was lying when she said the last sentence, as all the other emotions, even Anger, were much bigger and taller than her, but she just wanted Embarrassment to feel better. It didn't help, though, that Embarrassment whimpered and squeaked, pulling his hood tightly on before hurriedly walking out.

Envy sighed as she watched the retreating emotion, as she knew she was unable to help him because being embarrassed was part of his personality. Instead, she focused on what she had come for - her breakfast. She looked around for the cereal box and spotted it on the top shelf. She beamed, grabbed a nearby stool that was just about her size, and placed it near the shelf. She climbed onto the stool and raised her arms, attempting to reach the cereal box that, unfortunately, was still out of her reach.

"Come on," Envy muttered to herself as she stood on her tiptoes, desperate to grab the box. She felt the tips of her fingers touch the bottom of the shelf. Yes! she thought. Now if I could just reach a little bit further...

But just then, somebody walked over and said, "Oh, Envy, let me help you with that," and took the cereal box from the shelf and set it down on the top of the lower shelves.

"Hey!" said Envy, eyebrows furrowed and frowning. She turned around to see who had helped her, almost falling from the stool as she regained her balance. She then realized that it was Joy who had helped take the cereal and was now pouring it into a bowl with a carton of milk next to her. The cereal made a chinking sound at the bottom of the bowl as Joy poured it in.

"Cereal and milk is what you want, is it?" asked Joy cheerfully as she poured in the milk next, which Envy, still frowning, saw made the cereal seem to rise as it was poured in. "Well, then cereal and milk is what you'll get!" She finished pouring the milk and passed it over to Envy. "There you go!"

Envy was unsure of how to react to this. She wanted to make her breakfast by herself; it was her breakfast, after all. But she wouldn't want to hurt Joy's feelings, would she? She did just help her, even though she could have done it on her own.

"Oh, um, okay," said Envy, forcing a smile. "Thank you."

"You're welcome!" replied Joy. She pushed the cereal box neatly back on the shelf where it belonged, and with a word to Anxiety, who remained at the dining table, she skipped out of the kitchen. Envy watched her with a look of admiration. She always had a feeling that the happy emotion had never felt sadness before. Then, if she had, would she have shown it? Probably not.

"Hey, Envy," said Anxiety, interrupting her thoughts. Envy turned to face her, and at once, she knew what her best friend was going to ask. Anxiety pointed to the bowl of cereal and milk. "Would you like me to help you carry that?" she asked.

Envy shook her head and took her breakfast, which Joy had laden on a breakfast tray. She slowly jumped off the stool and carefully walked to Anxiety, balancing the tray as she did so. She didn't want to fall and make a mess, especially if her friend had to clean up after her. Sadly, fate seemed to think otherwise, and she suddenly tripped and fell, spilling the entire contents of the bowl. The bowl clattered in the other direction and the milk and cereal spread to Anxiety's socks, nearly making them wet.

Envy shakily got up and gasped at the soggy mess she had made. "Oh no," she said, covering her mouth slightly.

"Oh, Envy!" exclaimed Anxiety, quivering. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, Anxiety, but..." Envy pointed to the cereal and milk on the floor.

"It's okay, Envy," said Anxiety, getting up. "I'll help you."

"It's okay, Anxiety, I can do it," Envy told her, and quickly went to get a cloth from the lower shelves to wipe the mess up. However, when she returned to the spot where it was, the floor was shiny and clean, with no trace of the accident.

Envy was so shocked she didn't notice the cloth slip from her hand. She looked up and saw Anxiety brandishing a larger, soggy cloth, which she let fall into the sink. "There," she said with a smile. "That should do it." She turned around to tell Envy what she'd done, but she saw that her friend was looking at her, quite upset. Then, she suddenly understood.

"Oh... you wanted to do that by yourself, didn't you, Envy?" Anxiety asked her with wide eyes. "I'm so sorry. But hey!" She waved her hands at the sink in which she dropped the wet cloth, and grinned. "I've already helped you, so there's no need for you to do it yourself."

Although Anxiety was trying to brighten her mood, she didn't understand how Envy was feeling. Right now, Envy was starting to feel annoyed. Very annoyed. She could just feel her hands clenching. First Joy helped her with her breakfast, then Anxiety helped clean her mess? Will anybody let her do anything by herself?

"Um, Envy?" asked Anxiety. "Are you okay?"

Before Envy could reply, somebody came into the kitchen. She turned around and saw her second favourite emotion: Disgust. They've both had a special relationship ever since Envy and the other 'new' emotions first came to Headquarters. While Envy liked to think of them as close friends, Disgust always denied that fact. But Envy knew that they were much closer together than all the other emotions. It was as clear as the Headquarters' windows.

So when she entered, despite feeling annoyed, Envy couldn't help but smile. She's just so beautiful, she thought. How does she get such long eyelashes? They look brilliant on her. Not to mention her hair...

"Ah, Anxiety, Envy, there you guys are!" said Disgust.

"What's wrong, Disgust?" asked Anxiety. "Is it bad?"

"No. Joy just wants everybody to come into the console room."

"Why?" asked Envy. "And how do you get such long eyelashes?" she added hastily.

"Riley's about to go to school, so Joy needs all emotions on deck in case anything happens," replied Disgust. "Also, these eyelashes are natural." She touched one of them as she said this, looking at Envy with a smug smile on her face.

"Whoa," Envy gasped, not noticing this as she was still gazing at Disgust's eyelashes. "I wish I had long, natural eyelashes like those..."

"Alright, come on, let's go!" said Disgust quickly, probably because she noticed Envy was getting slightly closer to her with her arms raised in front, almost as if she wanted to hug her leg or something. Disgust was most definitely not going to let her do that, especially when it came to her clothes. She picked Envy up (much to her and Anxiety's surprise) and carried her out of the room, with Anxiety following nervously behind her, as though expecting something to fall on them at any moment. Disgust sighed. Fear was fine, but now this? Guess she'd just have to stick up with it.

Envy didn't mind being carried, as Disgust had done this with her once when Envy made Riley almost touch a girl's hair, and Disgust wanted to stop her. And she did feel quite sad when they came into the console room and Disgust put her gently down on the floor. Envy looked up to thank her, but the green emotion was now focusing her attention on the large screen at the front, where they saw Riley's world through her eyes. All the other emotions were there too, and as Envy leaned back a bit, she could see Joy up at the front, completely focused on the screen as Riley went through her daily life at school.

"Okay, people, we've got a busy time ahead," said Joy. "Riley will be facing a test soon, so make sure everybody stays here so we'll be ready for her. Disgust, do you have Envy and Anxiety?"

"They're here, Joy," replied Disgust, showing Envy, who was beside her, and Anxiety, who was already edging close to the console, desperate to get her hands on the buttons should anything happen.

"Good, good," said Joy happily. "Now, come over here, Anxiety, and show us what could be in store for us."

As Anxiety came closer to Joy and the console, Envy, too, tried to get to the front, but she could hardly see her way with all the emotions packed in one place. She turned around to ask Disgust for help, but she had disappeared. Sighing, she began making her way through the crowd, trying to get the emotions' attention as she did so.

"Hello, excuse me," she said. "Um, Embarrassment, would you please move over?" she asked him. However, Embarrassment didn't notice her as he was focused on the screen. Envy squeezed past him, but she was quickly and suddenly pushed by Anger, who seemed to appear out of nowhere and knocked her to the floor.

Envy rubbed her head as she stood up again, but then she was pushed again by Fear, who like Anger, suddenly appeared. Envy tried to prevent herself from getting knocked down again, but she kept getting pushed back by all the other emotions. After this happened many times, she began to recall what had happened previously: almost getting stepped on, being helped with things she could do herself, and now, being pushed back and forth, unnoticed by anyone... and finally, unable to take it any longer, Envy burst.

"ENOUGH!" she shouted, and all the emotions became quiet and turned to her, except Anxiety, who was looking up at the screen and saying, "And if this happens, Mum and Dad will be very disappointed in us -" but then realized the atmosphere around her changed, and she too looked in the direction of a very mad Envy.

"YOU GUYS NEVER SEEM TO NOTICE IT WHEN I'M AROUND, DO YOU?!" Envy continued yelling. "AND WHEN YOU DO, YOU ALWAYS HELP ME WITH THINGS I COULD EASILY DO BY MYSELF!"

All the emotions felt confused and uncomfortable at this sudden outburst from the little emotion. Shaking slightly, Anxiety came close to Envy and asked her, "W - what do you mean, Envy?"

"This morning, Embarrassment nearly stepped on me!" Envy shouted at her. "Joy made my breakfast, you cleaned the mess I made, and here, just now, you all didn't even take notice of me AT ALL!"

Joy stepped forward, next to Anxiety. "Envy," she began, and Envy already knew what she was attempting to do. "I never knew you felt that -"

"Stop, Joy," said Envy, showing her her hand palm with her face looking the other way. "It isn't going to work." Now looking forlorn, Envy put her hand down and walked away to her room. The emotions watched helplessly as she did this, feeling sad themselves. When she had gone, they were all still silent. Then, a voice from the screen of Riley's eyes interrupted.

"Alright, class, you've got ten minutes until the test starts, so you've still got time to revise," it said. The emotions turned back to the screen and saw that it was Riley's teacher who was speaking.

"Ten minutes?" voiced Fear, starting to shake. "That's sooner than I thought!"

"Ah, shut up, will you," said Anger.

"Joy," Sadness said to her. "What will we do about Envy?"

Joy stayed silent for a moment, then she had an idea. "You all stay here," she told the others. "I'm going to see Envy."

"Joy, can I come too?" asked Anxiety.

Joy smiled. She understood that Anxiety was concerned about her best friend. "Of course, you can, Anxiety," she replied. "Come on." With Anxiety beside her, Joy walked to Envy's room, which was also Ennui, Embarrassment and Anxiety's room. The door was left open, and Joy calmly walked inside. She and Anxiety saw Envy on her bed, staring at the floor with a sad face.

"Hey, Envy," Joy began slowly. "Can we -"

"Come in," Envy replied in such a quiet voice that Joy nearly didn't hear her. She got the message, however, and she and Anxiety sat on Envy's opposite sides.

"Envy... I know you don't like it when we push you around, but we just never seem to notice you," Joy started. "Because you're just very small."

"Yeah, Envy," Anxiety chimed in. "And we never knew that you felt the same way when we helped you with things you feel like you could do by yourself. We just see that you could use help, and we help you."

"But you could at least have asked me first," Envy told them, looking up at them and frowning.

"Yes, which is why from now on, we will make sure to check for you when we enter a room, and we will always ask you first before helping you," Joy concluded. "Okay?"

Envy smiled at her. "Okay," she replied.

Joy smiled back and got up. Anxiety and Envy followed suit.

"Now," Joy said to Envy. "Let's get back to the others. Tell them what we've agreed on."

Anxiety and Envy nodded and followed Joy out of the room. As Envy walked alongside the two, she decided that she'd have enough problems for today. There was just her cereal and milk to be made, and Envy decided that, just this once, Joy would be allowed to help her. Cereal boxes are hard to reach.
