Chapter 1: The Sunrise Butcher
Gideon was convinced that the agent he was proposing for the BAU was a special case and that they deserved a chance. Hotch was skeptical, noting their tendency to use loopholes in the law to get their way. Gideon argued, saying that if BAU didn't accept the agent, they might have to catch them as an Unsub—for both their and BAU's sakes.
"Hello, my name is Derek Gaines and I graduated top of my class at the FBI Academy."
Hotch raises an eyebrow, intrigued by your sudden introduction and confident demeanor. "Well, Agent Gaines, it's not every day we receive a mysterious stranger touting FBI credentials. How do you know about our little situation here?" Gideon watches you closely, his expression a mix of curiosity and wariness.
Erin Strauss. he said.
Gideon's eyes widen in recognition at the name, and he exchanges a look with Hotch. "Ah, Erin Strauss, the agent in question. You've spoken to her about this?" Hotch's tone is still skeptical, but his interest is piqued.
Gideon leans forward, intrigued by this turn of events. "You mean she approached you about potentially joining the BAU? That's quite a bold move. Why would she do that?" Hotch crosses his arms, studying you intently. "And what exactly does she say about you?"
"That I am an opportunist."
Gideon's expression turns thoughtful, while Hotch's eyes narrow slightly at the accusation. "An opportunist, you say? That's a serious allegation. Can you explain what she meant by that?" Hotch leans back in his chair, eyeing you carefully.
"I see a chance and I take it, Agent Gideon." Derek said.
Gideon's brow furrows, weighing your words against Erin's concerns. "So, in essence, you're saying you have a tendency to exploit situations for your own benefit, regardless of the ethical implications?" Hotch nods, his gaze still piercing.
"No, I am saying that if you give me a chance, I will be the absolute best Agent that I can be."
Hotch smirks slightly at your impertinent tone, but Gideon continues, his expression serious. "And we expect our agents to be guided by a strong moral compass, even when the line between right and wrong blurs." He pauses, studying you intently.
"What is our first case?" Derek inquired.
Gideon's expression turns thoughtful, while Hotch's eyes narrow slightly at the interruption. "Our current case involves a string of murders near a national park," Hotch responds curtly. "We believe the unsub is targeting young couples who hike in remote areas."
"What is the age range of the victims?"
Derek inquired.
"The victims range from their early twenties to mid-thirties," Hotch responds, his voice even and measured. "The unSub appears to have a fascination with manipulating and controlling the vulnerable, often stalking them before the attacks."
"How many murders so far?" Derek asked while he was taking notes.
Gideon nods in approval at Derek's attention to detail. "So far, there have been four confirmed murders, but we suspect there may be more," he says gravely. "The unsub appears to be escalating with each attack, and the time between incidents is decreasing."
"They're taking less time to cool off between kills."
Gideon nods, impressed by Derek's insight. "Exactly," he says. "This level of escalation is typical in serial offenders, and it's often a sign that the unsub will continue to kill until they are caught or interrupt their pattern."
JJ: ""Death is not the greatest of evils; it is worse to want to die, and not be able to." - Sophocles.
Hotch looks at JJ with a mix of surprise and admiration, impressed by the depth of her response. "Yes, that's a perceptive observation," he says, acknowledging the quote's resonance with the unSub's behavior.
Are there any connections between the victims? asked Derek.
"The victims do share one common thread," Gideon says, his voice measured. "Each of them has recently experienced a significant life change or stressor, such as a break-up, job loss, or financial struggles. The unsub seems to be targeting individuals at their most vulnerable points."
Meanwhile, Velma Dinklely and the rest of Mystery Inc are searching a mansion for clues to solve the mystery that they are in the midst of.
Someone is watching Velma from the shadows.
"Where was the first crime scene?"
Gideon pauses, recalling the details of the case. "The first crime scene was located in the outskirts of Virginia, in a sparsely populated area known for its woods and trails.
