"I'm just going to keep my head down, and focus on my work when I get to Hogwarts. Making friends would be great but could be risky, it's gone badly before.
But, I've always held out hope that maybe if I could go to Hogwarts things might be different there."
Remus wrote in his journal, as he sat in King's Cross Station in London.
"Remus." "Remus" His mother's voice broke through his inner thoughts.
"W-what?" Remus said, distractedly.
"Sweetheart, how are you feeling? Can I get you anything from the cafe?" Hope fussed over her son.
"Thanks mom, I'm okay." Remus told her kindly.
Hope nodded. "Alright. I'm just worried that's all. This month will be the first time you've been away from us on the full moon." His mom said extremely quietly, looking around for other people.
Remus knew how scared she was of him being all alone on the full moon. Deep down he was too but he'd never let his mom know. She worried enough about him already.
"I know. but Dumbledore says that the nurse is really nice. I'll be okay." Remus tried to reassure his mother despite his own fears of being alone.
"She's always worried" Remus thought to himself glumly.
Remus was pretty sure she hadn't had a good nights rest in years, she always checked up on him every few hours.
His mother just nodded and smiled at him.
Just then, his father broke the silence
"It's about time to go bud! You ready?"
Remus just nodded.
"This is it." Remus thought as he made his way down the platform towards the Hogwarts Express.
There was no turning back now, he was going to Hogwarts.
Remus and his parents said their final goodbyes before he clambered onto the large steam engine.
Making his way through the train, he searched for an empty compartment to settle into.
Most of the compartments were filled with laughing and happy students. Remus couldn't help but feel like an outsider among the jovial crowds. Remus would be lying if he said that he didn't want friends of his own, but it had never gone well before whenever people had discovered his secret. he would have to keep his condition a secret if he wanted to make friends.
About halfway down the train, Remus found a compartment with a small looking boy inside, and decided he looked like he could use a companion.
"H-hi, could I sit here." Remus gestured towards the empty seat.
"Of course." Squeaked the small boy. "
Sirius black was attempting to pull his oversized truck onto the train when someone pulled it up in the back.
Turning, He was startled to see another boy, who appeared to be a first year.
"Ha, thought you could use some help!." The other boy told him.
"Thanks. I'm Sirius."
"Nice. I'm James Potter. This is my dad." He gestured towards the older gentleman hoisting a truck onto the train.
"Hello." Sirius greeted the older man.
The man smiled kindly at him.
"You boys have a good term." The man said, before hugging his son goodbye.
"Wanna share a compartment?" James asked.
Sirius' mother told him he had to sit with his cousins, but in that moment sitting with a stranger sounded much more appealing.
"Sure thing." Sirius said. "Let's go this way." He told him, pointing them away from his cousins.
Halfway down the train, a greasy long haired boy was blocking their way through the aisle.
"Um, excuse us." James said gruffly.
The boy turned around annoyed.
"What's your problem." The black haired boy sneered.
"Well, You've gone and completely blocked the way." James retorted.
"Lily, hurry up." The boy snapped at his companion making her way into a compartment.
"I'm going Sev, this is heavy." She explained.
Sirius took out his wand, and in one swoop, the red head girls truck flew onto a rack.
Everyone stared at Sirius.
"Ha, nice." James told him.
"Your not allowed to use magic on the train!" The young girl snapped.
Sirius gave her and the boy with her a dirty look.
"What are you gonna do, rat me out." Sirius said.
The red head blushed in embarrassment. "Well, no. But still."
"Okay, are you gonna move now." James sneered, laughing at the greasy haired boy who continued to block their way.
The boy scoffed. "Come on Lily." He said, gesturing towards their compartment.
"And ya know, maybe next time just help the lady out instead of getting in everyone's way." Sirius grumbled.
The Lily and her friend glared at the pair of them, before shutting the compartment door.
"Jeez, what's her problem, you helped with her truck." James said, seemingly puzzled as to why the girl hadn't been more grateful.
Sirius just shrugged. "I dunno. Birds are weird I guess." He told him.
James nodded in agreement.
"But, that greasy kid. What's crawled up his arse?"
Sirius laughed wholeheartedly, "I think that greasy should be his new nickname."
James smiled wide, looking at him like he was worshiping a new deity.
James couldn't help but think they'd be fast friends.
Remus figured sitting with one person was less intimidating than sitting with an entirely filled compartment. He wasn't exactly use to socializing with other people his age.
Sometimes, his mom would bring him to their local park but he usually only got to play with other kid for an hour or so before leaving. He didn't usually see those kids again either. He was going to have to spend the next 7 years with these people. It was an intimidating thought.
"Thanks for sharing your compartment." Remus said, as he hoisted his trunk up onto a rack.
The boy nodded.
"No problem, I'm Peter." Squeaked the boy.
Remus nodded kindly, "I'm Remus." He replied.
Remus settled into the seat across from the other boy next to the window.
Remus was excited for the trip, he hadn't seen much of the country he'd grown up in because since four he had always been too sick to travel far.
Sometimes he and his parents would go to a local pond or park to play, but they had never traveled by train before. This was actually quite a treat for him. He kept looking around
"First year?" Remus asked the boy.
Peter nodded nervously.
"Yeah, same." Remus told him.
"So. What house you want want to be in?" Peter asked.
Remus hadn't even considered that yet. So much had been going on that he hadn't had time to think about that. He felt like the world was swirling around him.
Remus swallowed hard.
"I-I'm not really sure. My dad was in Ravenclaw, so I guess I wouldn't mind that house." Remus said thoughtfully.
Truthfully, Remus was just relieved he was even able to go to Hogwarts at all. Any house would do at this point.
"I'd like to be in Gryffindor, rumor has it their the bravest of the lot - " Peter began to say, before being cut off by two roudy black haired boys pulling open their compartment door.
"Hey, mind if we sit here?" The taller boy asked.
"Hey, Peter." The taller boy said.
"Hiya." Peter greeted him.
They clearly had met each other before. Remus knew some wizarding families did know each other though. He had never been able to socialize with other wizards as a kid, they would be too likely to notice the signs of a werewolf.
"Sure." Said Remus. He couldn't help but think that His plan to sit with only one person was surely not working out so well. He sighed. Figuring socializing couldn't be that bad.
"Im James, and this is Sirius." The taller boy said.
After introductions were had, the boys excitedly looked out the window at the scenery, and chatted happily, and before any of them had noticed, almost two hours had passed.
Remus found himself often staring out the window, thinking about his parents. He couldn't help but miss them terribly, they had been his only companions from 4 years on.
He also kept thinking about how the train worked, and if it was magically. It would bother him till he figured out how it worked.
Remus was pulled from his reverie by James.
"Want anything from the trolley, Remus?" James asked nicely.
Remus jumped at the chance. He was starving.
"I'll take a scone, and two chocolate frogs, please." Remus said, passing the trolley witch some money. His parents had given him quite a bit of pocket change, which Remus was grateful for.
Remus ripped open one of his chocolate frogs
Sirius nodded in approval of his choices.
"Ugh. I got Wendelin the Weird again." Remus said, taking a bite out of his frog.
"Oh, I don't have her yet. Can I have it." Peter squeaked.
"Sure, take it."
"Ha. Your so polite, you'd get killed in my family for that." Sirius mentioned after the trolley lady had retreated.
Everyone looked at Sirius, waiting to see if he was kidding.
"Oh, yeah I'm not kidding. The Blacks are crazy." He told them matter of factual.
"Merlin!!." James shouted. "You're a Black? And, here I am thinking you were all right."
Sirius barked with laughter.
"My family is pretty much the worst." Sirius told them.
"Are the Blacks bad?" Remus asked. His father hadn't told him much about the greater wizarding world.
"Ha, only if your not okay with a bunch of pure blood obsessed sycophants." James told him.
"No offense." James added for Sirius' benefit,
Remus looked to Sirius to see if he'd confirm this.
"Pretty damn accurate." Sirius said.
"Oh. They'd probably hate me then. My moms a muggle." Remus said.
"Ah, screw my family." Sirius said. "I think your pretty cool."
Remus was surprised. No one had ever given him a complement other than his family.
"Ha, thanks." Remus said.
"Jeez, doesn't that mean you'll be in Slytherin with the rest of the Blacks." Peter asked, sounding disappointed.
"Speaking of the Blacks." Sirius said, gesturing towards the compartment door.
His cousin Bellatrix Black was glaring in at him, with her haughty looking face.
She pulled open the door, like she owned the train. Bellatrix was a 7th year at Hogwarts and would be leaving after this year, which Sirius was grateful for.
"Sirius….you said you'd be sitting with…us." She said nastily, giving dirty looks to his companions.
"AND, I decided to sit with these guys. Get over it Bella. You're not the boss." Sirius snapped at her.
"Sirius! Your mother-." Bellatrix was cut off by Sirius.
"I don't care what my mother wants." Sirius said.
"Mmm, we'll see." Bellatrix murmured in a deadly tone, before walking away.
Sirius sighed. Knowing full well that could of gone far worse, and that his little comment would surely make it back to his mother, Walburga.
"Damn, who mad her queen of the world?!" James asked indigently.
Sirius just shook his head.
"I really hope I'm not a damn Slytherin." He told them.
Soon, it was dark outside, and the grassy plains that had once been visible out of the train windows had been replaced by Smokey colored mountains and thick forests of impenetrable greenery. Remus could see the lights of what he assumed was Hogsmeade Station in the distance out the window. He and his companions had pulled on their school robes on and were anticipating their arrival.
