"How are you doing?" The doctor asked Steve a little later. He was in a small room with a comfy sofa whilst Kate was having her shower.

"I don't honestly know," Steve admitted. "How's Kate doing?" he asked instead. "She seems…I dunno…Not like Kate. I can't blame her I suppose," Steve rambled on. "Is it normal for her to be making jokes?" he asked concerned, thinking about their last words before Kate took her shower. It seemed odd to Steve.

"All people respond differently," the doctor advised. "She's just been through a major trauma. She will eventually acknowledge that. You've just got to be there for her and support her when that time comes,".

"But how will I know what to do so I don't fuck up?" Steve asked. "I have a tendency to fuck things up. A lot," he explained.

The doctor smiled at Steve's honesty before handing him several leaflets. "These might help," she said. Steve looked down to find they were filled with advice on supporting rape victims. He would read them as soon as he could.

Kate appeared at the doorway, fresh out of the shower and Steve shoved the information he'd been given in to the bag he'd brought. "Feel better?" the doctor asked.

"Yes," replied Kate as she carefully took a seat beside Steve.

"Can I get you a cup of tea?" the doctor asked.

"Please," replied Kate. "Just milk,".

"Steve?".

"The same please," he replied before the doctor left them alone.

"Thanks for the clothes," Kate said, glad to be in something familiar and comfortable after the hospital gown.

"It's all I could find at mine," Steve said. "If you want I can go to yours and get something else,".

"It's fine, Steve," Kate silenced him before they sat in silence. Kate lost in her own world as Steve watched occasionally wondering if he should talk or just keep quiet.

"Here we go," the doctor said bringing a tray with drinks in and providing a welcome distraction for both Steve and Kate. "Are you going to report this to the police Kate?" the doctor asked after a little while.

"Umm, I suppose so," Kate said. All she really wanted to do was hide away somewhere.

"What?" Replied Steve a little surprised. Kate was a police officer. She wouldn't let a crime go unpunished would she?

"I haven't really thought about it," Kate snapped at Steve, angry that he was judging her.

"Sorry," apologised Steve as he glanced helplessly at the doctor. He was already fucking things up.

"Well you've done the best thing," the doctor soothed. "We've got all the evidence kept safe for when, or if, you decide to go to the police," the doctor continued. "I'm not going to tell you what to do, but if you are going to report it," the doctor said producing a card, "this is the best person,".

Kate looked at the card. DS Suzy Watson, she read. It wasn't a name she recognised but probably because DS Watson was a Rape and Specialist Sexual Assault Investigator. AC-12 didn't have much to do with them. "Thanks," she said as she handed the card to Steve for safe keeping. "Can we go now?" She asked. She suddenly wanted to get out of this building.

"There's a couple of other things we need to discuss," the doctor said as she placed a paper bag on the coffee table. "Your attack was unprotected Kate," she said. "We need to make sure you don't suffer any complications,". The doctor tipped the bag upside down and several pill packets fell on to the wooden surface of the table. "First we've got some painkillers," the doctor said, indicating the right box and putting them back inside the bag. "There's a course of antibiotics for you to take so you don't catch any sexually transmitted infection," she went on, indicating another box. "Are you allergic to anything?".

"No," replied Kate.

"Then these will be fine. Take one twice a day for the next week,".

"Should she take one now?" Steve asked.

"Not necessarily, but the sooner the better," the doctor said.

"Fine," said Kate as she reached for the box and retrieved a tablet before taking it with a gulp of tea.

"This one is the morning after pill," the doctor said. "You mentioned that you aren't on any form of hormonal contraception,".

"No," said Kate as she helped herself to her next tablet. "Is it ok to take with the antibiotic?" she questioned, hoping the answer would be yes. There was no way she wanted to fall pregnant with that fucker's child. The doctor nodded so Kate took the second pill with another gulp of tea. "And what are these?" she asked, indicating the last box on the table.

"HIV prophylaxis," the doctor said. "We don't know the HIV status of your attacker," she went on. "You may be at risk but this course of tablets should help prevent it if started within 72 hours of your attack,".

"I've certainly hit the jackpot haven't I?" Kate said grimly as she held out her hand for her third tablet.

"Three tablets a day for 28 days," the doctor instructed. "It's printed on the label for you," she added. "We'll need to see you in 4-6 weeks for a HIV blood test and again in three months time. I'm afraid it's too early to take any blood today,".

"Right," answered Kate. She hadn't even thought about contracting HIV when she'd been attacked. This rape could possibly have life long complications for her.

"And if you do have sex before then, you should use a condom," the doctor added gently as she looked at both Steve and Kate.

"Ok," Kate said although sex was the last thing she ever thought she would participate in again after tonight. The thought of letting someone enter her body was completely repulsive to her at this moment in time. "Is that it?".

"As far as your physical health goes, yes," the doctor said. "I'm going to give you some leaflets on support groups and counsellors. Your mental health also needs to be looked after following your ordeal,".

"OK," echoed Kate as she took the proffered leaflets. She glanced briefly at them, already knowing she would be throwing them in the bin when she got home. She had just taken them to be polite. She was a police officer. She was strong and independent and could look after herself. She was going to be fine without needing anyone's help.
