Chapter 1

Normal Days But Monstrous Nights

"And can anyone tell me the answer to number #8?" Mrs. Agnes Johnson asked. "Yes, Stella."

"X goes to infinity," Stella Zhau responded.

"Correct again Mrs. Zhau," Mrs. Johnson. "Now on to question nine."

"Psst," Stella looked behind her to see her friend, Jordan Eason, "How did you get that? I couldn't make heads or tails on that problem."

Stella smirked slightly, "It wasn't that hard," she whispered, "once you learn about L'Hopital that is." She watched as her face scrunched up.

"Didn't the syllabus say that would be a topic in two weeks?"

"Yup," Stella said with a. Small smirk

"Let me guess, you already knew how to do it."

"You know me so well." It wasn't a surprise to anyone in their school that of course Stella would know about a topic well ahead of time. Even though they were just in their sophomore year, she was known as the brainiac throughout the school. There were even some seniors who wanted her to help them with their homework. Being known as the brainiac throughout the school did not deter her fun. Stella was constantly at parties and enjoying the life she lived throughout the school. She was part of the track team, and school advisory committee, and was captain of the debate team. Overall, she thought that her life was pretty good, and she wouldn't give it up for anything.

Her thought was interrupted when she heard a loud creaking noise coming from the front. She turned and saw that the door was opening and a lanky student was quickly walking to his seat unsuccessful in his attempt of being unnoticed.

"Mr. Loud," Mrs. Johnson said, which caused the student to pause and turn to look at her.

"Yes Ma'am?" he responded hesitantly.

"This is the third time in two weeks you've been close to fifteen minutes late. I can understand that I may not interest you, however you should understand that your constant interruptions are ruining your classmates ability to learn. Do you have anything to say?"

Stella heard a couple of her classmates chuckle. She rolled her eyes. Lincoln Loud has been doing the same routine for close to three years now. Showing up late and promising not to do it again only to repeat the same thing a week later. Now she watched as he shuffled around for a little bit.

"No ma'am," he responded. "I promise that"

"It will never happen again," Mrs. Johnson responded with a frown. "I've already heard that one Loud. Go take your seat and try to keep up."

Mrs. Johnson turned around towards the board. Stella watched as Lincoln began to walk towards his seat. As he was getting near he ended up falling causing the class to laugh. Chandler moved his leg back underneath his seat as he looked down and smirked as Lincoln began to pick himself up from the floor and continue towards his seat in the back corner opposite.

"What do you think held up bunny boy today?" Jordan asked Stella.
"Hmm, I don't know. You know what I'll ask him when we are having our very romantic date in Paris later," Stella said, causing Jordan to giggle. Stella turned back to lesson listening to Mrs. Johnson talk about the lesson.

"You still plan on coming to my party tonight right?" Jordan asked leaning back in her chair.

"Of course, wouldn't miss it for the world," Stella said. Jordan has been planning this party since the beginning of the year. Almost everyone from the school was invited and planned to be there. After all, who would miss an opportunity to party at one of the "richies" houses? Their parties were infamous for being some of the most fun in their town, and if it were Jordan who was throwing the party, then it certainly would be the whole school there. Well, that was unless you were a part of the freakshow.

Stella turned her head and looked at Lincoln, who was still trying to get organized. His white hair was falling in his face, and she watched as he swatted it out of the way. That was always the first thing she noticed about him, the pale hair that made him stand out in a crowd. Then came his oversized teeth, which made his smile crooked. Ever since she first saw him in middle school she thought he looked weird, which was backed up by his character. Always late, constantly staring off into space, and his appearance was disheveled with unkept hair and clothes that were always baggy on him. Stella turned towards the board and waited for the bell to ring so she could get out.

She met up with Jordan when lunch came and went to sit with her group. At their table sat Chandler with his arm around his girlfriend, Christina. To the left of her sat Cookie and Evelyn. To the right of Chandler were Jude, Pierce, and Hunter. Stella sat next to Eveylen with Jordan sitting on her other side.

"You guys ready for tonight?" Jordan asked once she sat down.

"Oh definitely, I've been waiting to party ever since first period. Especially when we were going over all those, what was it, derivatives. Talk about boredom." Chandler said as he rubbed his face.

"Come on, it wasn't that bad," Stella said rolling her eyes.

"Please, the only exciting thing was Loser Loud coming in late"

"Again? Isn't that what the third time this month?" Christina asked.

"Fourth actually," Jordan responded, "Three times in two weeks."

"Are you surprised, he's done that ever since we were in middle school?" Cookie said, "Besides everyone in the freakshow has shown up late constantly." Everyone at the table took a quick glance at the table across the lunchroom. There sat Lincoln and the rest of the freaks. Now when most people hear that term, they expect some sort of graphic imagery. However, that was not the case for this group. All looked like typical teenage boys. Most people would assume that they were regular kids in the school, but to everyone in the school, they were the freaks. The reason for the term "freak" was due to how they were all known to stare off into an abyss. It was creepy to turn around and find any members of the freaks standing still and just looking out into the distance, however, for guys like Chandler it only made pranking them so much easier. It helped that no matter where they went, the members were always the same, since the group was formed during middle school.

Stella could see that they were in some type of discussion amongst themselves. She was slightly curious to hear what kind of discussions they got up to. From what she knew most of them had average grades and none were physically gifted. What could there discussions be like?

"You're kidding," Rusty said with his mouth agape similar to the rest of the members at the table aside from the white-haired teen he was staring at. "You are taking on a level 36, isn't that what seven or eight levels higher than what you took on last time." Each of their eyes were on Lincoln as he was explaining his plans for the night.

"Yeah, Pop-Pop wants me to take this one. He thinks I need to push myself a bit more instead of going for what he called 'easy targets.'" Lincoln explained as he took a bite out of his sandwich.

"Does it have to be tonight, Lincoln?" Clyde asked his best friend. "It will be even stronger tonight than if you wait a few days to take it out." Clyde adjusted his glasses as Lincoln turned to him.

"Yeah, I really wish I thought of that before I got the contract from Flip today."

"Is that why you were late this morning?" Zach asked

"Who told you I was late?" Lincoln said while snapping back to stare at the freckled teen.

"I overheard some of the girls talking about it in English."

Lincoln sighed, "Partially. Lucy and Lola were having rough mornings, so I had to deal with that before going to Flips. Then I had to wait on Flip to finish restocking before he finally talked to me."

The table was silent for a moment before Liam spoke up, "Do ya feel prepared for it though?"

Lincoln looked down at his hands and thought about it. The rest of the table glanced at each other with nervous stares, knowing that if something went wrong, they might not see him again. Lincoln looked up at them with a small smile: " I'm not sure, but I trust Pop-Pop's judgment. And if he feels like I am ready, then who am I to doubt him?" He finished right as the bell started ringing causing the table to begin packing up.

"Well, if anything goes wrong, make sure to call me Linc." Clyde replied as he began to leave due to the bell. The rest of the table stood up and began to move out of the lunchroom.

"Will do." Lincoln replied as he was walking out towards his next classroom. He had to think about tonight and how he would be able to prepare for what it holds for him and if he wanted to get his friends involved. After all, his grandfather was right about him trying to take it easy, but who could blame him? He just started high school a few weeks ago and trying to adapt to the new environment was not something he was used to yet. So what was the harm in having a few weeks of easy work? Well, his grandfather feared that Lincoln would become complacent with only "easy work" so he encouraged Lincoln to try a challenge.

Lincoln was deep in these thoughts as he was walking towards his class and did not realize who was in front of him. Lincoln crashed directly into the back of Chandler causing him to fall forwards. Chandler got up and turned quickly only to find Lincoln with a surprised look on his face.

"Watch where you're going, Loud," Chandler said as he pushed Lincoln, causing him to fall. "Now, due to the possible damages you could have given me," Chandler said with a devilish smirk, "I believe some type of compensation is in order." He grabbed Lincoln's bag, which caused Lincoln to try to get up to get it but was held back by Pierce and Hunter.

"Come on Chandler, it was an accident." Lincoln tried to plead with him. He couldn't be late for his next class. If he were, it would be detention. He definitely needed to be out early today before it got too late, otherwise he would have an even more difficult night.

"Oh, is poor little Loud sorry," Chandler mocked, causing Hunter, Jude, and Pierce to laugh. Chandler began to rummage through Lincoln's bag as Lincoln struggled to get out of the hold they had him in. "Wow, I knew you were a loser, but you really have nothing of value. You know, I think the most valuable thing you might have is your bag." After he said that he began to dump everything from Lincoln's bag onto the floor. All Lincoln could do was watch in horror as all his notebooks, papers, and binders fell to the floor. "Well I guess I'll catch you later, Loser Loud," Chandler said as he swung Lincoln's now empty bag over his shoulder and walked to his class.

Hunter and Pierce released Lincoln and began to walk with him. Lincoln kneeled down and tried to quickly gather his stuff which was difficult with everyone moving around and his notebooks being kicked by people not paying attention. It was a struggle for him, with some passersby even laughing as his arms were filled with random scraps. Lincoln tried not to pay attention to the laughs he got while trying to get everything together.

"This is yours, right?"

He turned to see Stella Zhau with his history notebook in her hand. "Uhh, yeah, yeah. It is." Lincoln took it from her and turned back to pick up the rest of his stuff. Stella kneeled to help him pick up his stuff. "You really don't need to do that," Lincoln said as she handed him two of his binders.

"I know," she simply replied. She went to pick up one of his notebooks that happened to fall open on the floor. "Did you draw that?" She asked. Lincoln looked and saw it was a sketch of a small lemur-like creature with bright big eyes and small horns on the head. "It's cute."

"Uh yeah." He snatched it from her before she could see any more drawings from his notebook. Lincoln tried to gather everything else before getting up. "Thanks for the help."

"Yeah, don't mention it to anyone," Stella said as she handed the last notebook to him. The bell rang and both looked up to see that it took much longer than either had expected.

"Oh shit," she heard Lincoln say. He quickly began to walk away but turned slightly towards her, "Thanks again." She watched as Lincoln walked away, towards his class before walking toward her class. She did not have to worry about being too late since it was only a few doors down. She was curious to know why Lincoln was in such a rush to class. While she understood that detention was not the best thing, his action made it seem like he was fighting for his life. Stella chuckled while walking to class her mind shifting from Lincoln to the night's adventure.

The party was as advertised by Jordan. Every room in the large house was filled and even the yards were full of people. She happened to hire a popular local band to play and Jordan was able to pick up some of the most expensive booze she could find. Stella was enjoying the buzz that she got from the excitement around her. She watched as Jordan and Christina were dancing, trying to get her to join them on the dance floor. Despite her many talents, Stella knew one of her weaknesses was her dance skills, so she politely declined. Instead, she decided to go out to the balcony to observe the night sky. It just so happened that Jordan's party was taking place during a full moon so even without the lights around the house, the night sky was brightly lit. She took a deep breath in and relaxed.

"Fancy meeting you here," Chandler said behind her. She turned and saw that he was walking towards her with a cup in his hands. He stumbled as he walked and had a droopy look on his face. Stella gave a small smile to him as he approached her. "How do you enjoy the, uh, party sooo far?"

"Wouldn't trade it for the world," she responded as he came beside her.

"Yeah, figuree you wouldd have said that. You know I've been thinking that you look pretty lonely lately. Still haven't found that guuy yet?" He asked with aloof eyes.

"Not yet," she replied. It was true that Stella was the only one in her group single, but it wasn't for the lack of offers. Many men had tried to woo her into taking her out for dates but all had some flaws for Stella. Some were rude, some were boring, and some were stupid. No matter who came to her, she always found some flaw that they tried to hide.

"Welll, in that case, how about I and you go to oonee of the private roomss," Chandler said with a smirk.

Stella looked at him eyes wide, "What? But you and Christina."

"Whhat about her."

"I can't. We've been friends since middle school there is no way that I could do her like that," Stella said as she began to try to make her way back into the house.

"Ohh, don't be like that Stell." Chandler reached and grabbed her arm tight and frowned. "I've seeen the way that you look at me. I know that you are interested."

"Let go, Chandler. You are grabbing my arm too tight."

"Don't say that, I know you like it," Chandler said as he pulled her closer to him.

"Seriously, let me go."

"Or else what," he replied with that devilish smirk.

Then came the scream. At first, Stella thought it was from her, but realized it was coming from the yard. Then she saw his face drop with a confused expression on his face before it paled and his grip that she so desperately wanted to be gone was released.

"What the hell is that thing," Chandler yelled which caused Stella to turn and see a grotesque, giant making its way past the yard. It was at least 10 ft tall and much longer than that. Its face long snout like a crocodile's but with rows and rows of teeth similar to a leech's. Its bright, yellow eyes shined like stars against its crimson skin as the appendages maneuvered across the crowd. Its ape-like arms clashed against the rest of the body which was more similar to an eel. With no back legs, its body slithered into the crowd causing many students to crash into each other and fall across one another. It was making its way towards the house and all she could do was stare into that monstrous form before she felt her body run into the house.

She ran past the doors and into the house where everyone was still dancing. She ran into the dancefloor as she heard the cracking sound of the wooden wall being broken down by the creature. Screams flooded her ears as she felt bodies rushing around her with people trying to figure out what they were witnessing. The music stopped, the dancing stopped, the party stopped, but Stella couldn't stop. She just kept running from the creature, but the more she ran the closer it felt. She turned and saw the bright yellow eyes behind her with the creature following her as he ran throughout the house. She felt the floor before she realized her mistake. A stupid damn wire from the guitar was out in the open and it spelled her doom. Was this what her coffin would feel like, cold and hard like the stone floor? Would there even be enough of her left to bury after that thing got through with her? She turned and saw the creature getting closer to her. Her mind told her to go out with courage and face the creature that would be her end, but her body refused to do so. It shut her eyes tight as she heard the monster get ever so closer before hearing a high pitched snarl. Instantly, she opened her eyes to see the creature reaching at its head where a person stood with a large blade in the head of the monster. The person jumped off and landed in front of Stella where she could see his white hair fall in front of his face.

"Go, go, go!" Lincoln yelled at her as he grabbed her by the arm and began to drag her before she suddenly woke up and ran with him. The creature let out a loud growl and began to chase after them as they made their way through the house and out to the other yard, where many students were also running from the creature. Stella kept moving before she realized that Lincoln had stopped and turned around towards the monster. She looked over her shoulder to see him about twenty-five yards from the monster.

Dressed in an all-black uniform it made his pale skin and white hair stand out amongst the crowd. He was in a defensive stance with a large sword in his hands as he watched the creature make its way closer and closer towards him. Stella wanted to yell at him to run to get away but all that came out was a low squeak as she watch the creature get closer and closer towards him. Suddenly he moved out of the way and turned to the side as he slashed the monster causing bright violet liquid to sprout from the wound. It squirted all around and got into Stella's eyes causing her to scream out in pain from the burning sensation they were feeling at the moment. It got worse in an instant when she felt the tail of the monster crash into her body sending he flying a good six yards from the events. She opened her burning pupils and saw the creature focusing all its attention on Lincoln.

It charged at him mouth agape. She watched as Lincoln was able to jump up above the grotesque mouth and fall with the blade pointed downwards impaling one of those yellow eyes that had chased her. He turned the blade at an angle causing the monster's momentum to carry it into being sliced by the blade. Bright violet was pouring out of the creature drenching Lincoln in the liquid as his blade kept cutting further and further down the creature before exiting from the tail. The monstrous behemoth let out a loud moan as it fell to slide and slide further into the yard falling onto its side as it finally stopped and lay there still as the moon was in the sky. Lincoln stood coated in that violet liquid. He was breathing heavily and his eyes were closed. He slowly opened them and looked up into the night sky before letting out a small uneasy laugh.

"Holy crap," he said. "That worked. It freaking worked!" He turned and saw the beast behind him and a smile crept onto his face. However, as he began to look around he frowned as he noticed Stella staring at him with barely open eyes. Her face was coated in purple blood. Lincoln quickly ran to her, sheathing his blade.

"Hey, hey, are you okay." He asked as she just stared at him. Her eyes were growing heavier and she could barely focus on him as she felt herself getting tired. "Did any get into your eyes!?" What? "Did any of the blood get into your eyes?"

Oh. "Yes," Stella whispered as she felt darkness overtake her eyes. She was just able to make out Lincoln's statement.

"Oh No."
