Chapter 1

"Jake, it's an amazing opportunity. We have a wedding to plan which means we need the extra money. Not to mention, I may finally be able to finish law school." Olivia sat on the edge of the couch, her hands nestled firmly under her chin as she watched her fiance pace the floor in front of her. Olivia Pope and Jake Ballard had been engaged for three months and until a week ago they had lived blissfully in the honeymoon stage of their engagement. For months it had been amazing and romantic dates, plenty of decently exciting sex, and conversations that mapped out their beautiful future. Unfortunately, Olivia had to come back and face reality. The reality was that she had not yet found a job since dropping out of law school a semester early, did not have the money to finish her schooling, and Jake didn't make nearly enough money to pay for their upcoming wedding.

"Liv, I have no problem with you getting a job. I would love for you to become a lawyer, you know that I support that dream. I just think that you should look into other companies run by better people." Jake let out a deep sigh and ran his fingers through his hair as he finally halted his feet. Slowly, he stepped towards the couch and took a seat next to Olivia before taking one of her hands into his. "Fitzgerald Grant is not a good man. I don't want to see him ruin your career and reputation before it even begins."

Fitzgerald Grant. Olivia knew the name before she ever stepped foot into Georgetown University Law School. He was a top real estate developer and lawyer, and he partnered with one of the best law firms in the country. Working for Grant Homes was a direct stepping stone for Olivia to finish law school, pass the bar, and get a job at the Shore & Mackey law firm in DC. The problem was that Jake was holding a grudge from either his time in the Navy or from his time in grad school when he and Fitzgerald had somehow known each other. Jake never would tell Liv the story, but anytime his name came on the news Jake would immediately change the channel. No matter the story, Olivia didn't think that her future should be affected by her fiance's deep issues. Besides what little Jake told her, all she really knew about Fitzgerald Grant was that he was successful as a lawyer, and went on to be successful as a real estate developer at his fathers company. All of her interest in Fitzgerald Grant was solely on him as a professional, when it came to the work he has done in her field she could name off statistics the way Jake could name off football statistics. If you asked her though, she probably couldn't even tell you what he looks like.

"I am going to the interview, I'm not saying that I am going to take the job but I would like to see for myself if working at Grant Homes would really be a good opportunity. It's just an interview." Liv pulled Jake's hand to her lips and gently kissed the back of his knuckles. She gave him a soft smile, trying to remind him by the look on her face that they would still be a team, no matter what.

With a soft sigh, Jake shook his head before letting a small smile grace his face. "Fine, but I would like to talk more about it if anything goes further with this job, is that okay?"

She smiled and gave him a soft kiss on his lips, silently agreeing with his request.

The following Friday, Olivia woke up to her early five o'clock alarm. Jake was still sound asleep and Olivia took the moment to watch her fiance. She let her eyes wander his face, noting the way his eyelashes laid against his cheeks, the slightly uneven way his five o'clock shadow had grown in since dinner last night, the way his lips parted and occasionally stretched into a small smile as he slept. She loved Jake, and she couldn't wait to marry him.

After a quick shower and a few wardrobe changes, Olivia placed a soft kiss on her fiance's temple before running down the stairs to gather her travel mug of tea. Before exiting the apartment, Olivia stopped in front of the full body mirror sitting in the entryway and took a moment to double check everything before the interview that would absolutely change her life. The reflection showed a beautiful, strong, and intelligent young woman and that is exactly how she felt this morning. She donned a tight black and white dress that accentuated her curves, it showed just enough cleavage that it still remained professional and stopped just above her knees. She wore a pair of black, block, four inch heels, likely purchased at Target or TJ Maxx, and the shoes paired with the dress had her feeling like the sexiest soon-to-be lawyer alive. After one long breath and a quick fluff to her straightened hair, Olivia grabbed her purse and her tea before meeting her cab just outside of her apartment building.

Olivia had few, but high expectations of her interview. The Grant Homes corporate building was in need of an assistant and paralegal, but ideally they would find someone that could operate as both. While Olivia thought her skills placed her high above being someone's assistant, the job did promise that, if interested, the hired associate would receive full tuition reimbursement and any additional funds needed to complete the Bar exam. This alone was enough to grab Olivia's attention, but the hefty salary of $80,000 a year was more than worth such a low job title. Six months ago, Olivia Carolyn Pope made the heart wrenching decision to drop out of school a week before her final semester. After undergrad, she was trying desperately to keep up on her student loan payments and could no longer afford any additional debt on her shoulders. Right now it was Jake's turn and all of their savings went to the opening of his new business. It was ridiculous to think that the only thing standing between her and her dream was money. After today though, she was sure that would not be an issue. She was a shoe in for this job, she just needed Fitzgerald Grant to like her and she needed to like him in return.

As the cab slowed in front of the large skyscraper, Olivia took one last deep breath before exiting. She placed a smile on her face, one that beamed confidence and hope as she stepped through the double doors and made her way to the front desk. A young man, probably not much younger than she, reflected her smile back at her as he saw her approaching. "Good morning ma'am, I don't believe I have seen you in here before and I know I would remember a smile as beautiful as yours. How can I help you today?" Liv couldn't help the slight blush that came over her cheeks, it was rare that she was so kindly and genuinely complimented before 8am.

"Good morning-" she took the moment to look at his nametag, "Devin. My name is Olivia Pope, I have an interview with Fitzgerald Grant at 7." As she waited for Devin to pull up the information regarding her interview, Olivia took the time to look around the large entry floor. There was already a lot of hustle and bustle going on for this early in the morning, people flowing in and out of elevators and assistants running around with important coffee deliveries. The building itself was beautiful, the walls and lights gave the room a bright, gold hue that was more than inviting. She took a deep breath, inhaling the smell of fresh flowers and freshly brewed coffee- she committed the smell to memory so that hopefully one day she could remember that this place is where her and Jake's future would really begin.

"He should be expecting you. Here is a key card for the elevator, please be sure to drop it off with me on your way out. Mr. Grant's office is on the fifteenth floor." Devin smiled as he handed the key card over to Olivia and pointed towards the wall of elevators behind her. With a quick thank you and a smile, she turned towards the elevator and was quickly on her way up to the fifteenth floor of the building. In front of her-or above her rather- was everything she could ever want. This was her future, this was how she was going to finally make a name for herself and it was mere seconds and a few floors away.
