Record 15- Concursus

The sun was about to set, the spring wind was moving the trees back and forth. The street was uncomfortably lonely, there was not a single mammal around.

The fox was walking, pretending to be calm... however, he felt those eyes on him, stalking him, following him everywhere since he came out of the subway.

When he was about to reach his destination, he sighed tiredly and stopped walking.

- All right, I must admit that it was fun, and I'm really surprised that you didn't lose sight of me through all the complicated places in the station, but this is already too much.

No one responded to the accusation, and the red-haired man put his paw to his temple.

- Carrots, I can smell you, come out now, otherwise I'll come and get you out of the bush myself, don't get caught on a branch. - He teased.

- I'm sorry... I just wanted...

- Spy on how I was doing with my mom on her birthday, huh?

- Something like that... although spying is too much...

- Right?

- I'd rather call it moral accompaniment.

- Unsolicited, and forbidden, I might add.

- Nick, don't bother, it's just that... Why don't you want me to meet your mom? No evasions. At graduation you took her, and you've been visiting her for weeks... you won't let me pick up Bianca, what's going on?

- Nothing's wrong, and don't change the subject.

- You're ashamed of me, aren't you? That's it.

-What? Of course not! And don't turn things around, the one who was misbehaving was you, not me.

- I introduced you to my parents at the concert and you always barge in on my calls. It doesn't seem fair... or normal. The only thing I can think of, is that you don't want to be seen in your childhood neighborhood with a dumb bunny. - She turned away, hiding her crystalline purple eyes. She hated being so sensitive. - If so, maybe you'd feel better with...

- Woh, woh, stop right there Officer dramas, are you forgetting I'm not the only one being dishonest?

- What? Of course not... I haven't lied to you. - Technically . - She thought to herself. - Don't change the subject.

- I'm changing the subject because I'm the one being harassed by my partner and best friend and it seems to me that...

- I'm your best friend? - She asked, surprised and looking with amusement at the dumb fox's reaction. - If you'll excuse me, they're waiting for me, and I think your new partner is too, finish your shift, I'll see you later.

- You're a…

Well maybe this looks a little confusing and I should explain earlier in the day... so you would be able to understand why it's all Nick's fault and I'm innocent.

It was a normal day at the station, I arrived early as usual, Nick left me a message saying he would be leaving on his own. Since then I must have suspected something was going on.

- Good morning Ben! How are you doing? - I greeted cheerfully, catching the attention of my officer friend, who was about to devour his first donut of the day.

- Hey Hopps! All quiet around here, no action since the chase and arrest of Thai and Tim last night.

- Yeah, Lana and I were watching it on the TV news.

- They saved none other than Leonzález's niece, that's too much.

- What I don't understand is this attack on a young student.

- Maybe her connection to her uncle, the mayor.

- And he's supposed to be clean and free of any trouble.

- Carrots! Benji! Morning!

- Well, if it isn't the mystery officer, where were you? - I looked at him for any telltale detail, but as usual... apparently covered.

- You're a paranoid stalker. I wasn't doing anything, I just left Snowball with mom, no more, no less.

I watched as Nick said goodbye to Ben and started walking briskly toward the Bullpen.

- It's her birthday today, isn't it? - I asked curiously catching up with his gait.

- I'm not even going to ask how you know that.

- I'm just a good partner and friend...and I thought I...

- Hopps! Wilde! My office... now! And no jokes, I'm not in the mood!

Bogo's shrill voice was heard from the second floor... One of these days it would surely give me a heart attack.

- As if I was ever in a good mood. - He took a big sip of a coffee he hadn't even noticed I had. - What did you do this time, huh Fluff?

- Me? You're the one who always gets us into trouble.

- I know, but just once I wanted to be the one to ask first.

Nick smiled his sly, smug grin and walked into the office. There was something about that look... something hidden... there had to be something that...

- Okay, take a seat, both of you.

Nick was about to speak when Bogo signaled him to be quiet.

- I don't have time, so I'll give you both your assignments. Hopps let me congratulate you on joining the program "Sponsor a new recruit".

- I did what?

For a moment I thought my ears had failed me. I knew that program, it's where the cops who have at least a year, support the new recruits.

- Nick doesn't count as a recruit? - I asked in shock... I didn't even want to remember what had happened in my time as a newbie with Thai and Tim... the officers were just starting to forget.

- Technically yes. But he signed up for the community center speaking program, so you'll be working with a different one for the next few weeks. Wilde... you'll be representing Precinct 1... you better hope you...

- My honorable Chief, I will leave your name as high as Clawhauser's weight, don't worry.

-Sweet cheese and crackers!

- You'd better, because if there's any mess... It'll be parking meter duty for at least a month! Dismissed.

I smiled sweetly at the boss's serious and scary morning face, and as soon as we took a few steps and entered our cubicle, I quickly wiped my smile.

- You signed me up for that program...

- Why do you ask? - He looked at me with that "sly look" again.

- I wasn't asking, I was assuring. Does it bother you that much that we work together? Isn't it enough that I have to leave for the last two hours at Precinct 6?

- THAT was YOUR idea, not mine. And besides, Officer Hopps, you have no proof that your handsome partner signed you up.

- But I'll find it...you'll see...

- Whatever you say sweetheart, I'll see you tonight, I'll take the girl back, get dinner ready!

- You are...

- Incredibly handsome and wonderful?

I almost hit his face when I threw a book towards the door, until a large mammal caught it.

- They sure look like a married couple, don't they? Mrs. Wilde... or should I say, Mrs. and Mr. Hopps?

- Eddy, what are you doing here?

- I'm looking for my partner who will guide me to improve my first steps as a police officer.

- Excellent! At least they assigned me to someone great.

- You don't sound happy about your participation, what's wrong?

- Let's just say it was a... surprise... Come on, I'll tell you on the way, today we'll review files…

- It has to be files? So early in the morning?

- Believe me, starting with the boring stuff really makes the day more interesting, now...

As we turned into the hallway, the large figure of the boss almost crashed into us.

- Edward! ... I mean, Officer Bogo, what are you doing here?

- Hi Chief, I was assigned as pupil to mentor Hopps.

- But... in my precinct...?

- I know, it sounds... strange, but it's what was decided from above.

- Well... you were third in your generation, that must be it... Needless to say, I'll keep an extra eye on you, more than the others.

- I... I know it, Chief.

- Get to work!

I watched the young buffalo's countenance darken... who knew it was just the beginning of the whole thing.

Stop recording-Hopps 1-O

- Careful Fluff, you could be about to ruin the image I have of you.

- Oh believe me Slick, no more than you've tarnished mine about you.

- Well now that we're both dirty, I'll be on my way. There are two beautiful vixens waiting for me.

The red fox turned around, and as she was about to answer him, the doe was interrupted by her young temporary partner.

- Judy, I think you should leave it at that for now... we will be in more... trouble.

- Believe me Edd...we can't be in any more trouble...

- We have to go to Precinct 6... right?

- Yes... that's right... - The doe looked down with noticeable concern in her amethyst eyes.

- It's your last day, isn't it?

- Yes... it finally is...

Judy resumed her walk, letting free a big sigh, full of frustration... she knew it... that day was the deadline to see if she would accept "the date" with the Chief of the precinct... and the fact that Eddy was with her, calmed her down a little, although to be honest... she knew the bastard pig would know how to get alone with her.

- Are you all right, Judy? You look... tense.

- Yeah all right... I'll go to Pigtorn's office, I'll see you when you finish changing the wheel on the patrol.

- Sure you don't want to...

- We won't have transportation if it's not changed... go.

- Okay...

It should have been a simple day, with simple plans... but no, things are never simple... especially when it comes to Carrots! She got me into a big one, which I'm pretty sure I've already solved... but at least I'm sure she and Mom won't meet. I understand her intention, it's very cute like her, but I know why I say things... if only she wasn't so stubborn... even poor Spongy paid the consequences.

- Let me get this straight... You destroyed three lines of files, formatted a backup computer, crashed the patrol and got a ticket... on your first day? - I sighed tiredly, trying to get Bianca to eat her porridge and balance my cell phone..

- In my defense... your partner is kind of intense... Now I understand your nerves at ZPA.

- It's only a couple of hours away now. Where are you? Haveyou made it to Precinct 6 yet?

- Yeah, by a miracle... I swear I don't know what came over me...

- Where is she?

- Actually... I don't know... she sent me to change the wheel of...

- WHAT!

Definitely, if you want something done right, you should do it yourself.

- All right son? You scared the girl.

- Sorry mom, it was a call from one of the officers.

- Must you go now?

- I'm afraid so. - I saw her sad look and I hung up the call. I'm sorry, Mom. - Don't worry, this Saturday morning I plan to come and eat more of that delicious cake we made.

-Take care Nicholas, and take care of Bianca.

- Thanks mom.

I was in front of Pigtorn's door... nervous... I managed to avoid him as much as I could… but not today... I have to face him... I still don't know how to avoid him... but I will, I know I'll find a way. I gave a big sigh and opened the door with determination.

- Good morning Officer Hopps.

- Mrs. Pigtorn! What are you doing here... I didn't know you were an officer... - And I really didn't think so, if it wasn't for the uniform, I would never have believed it.

- Actually, it's Chief Porkton, I'm in the process of getting a divorce.

- I... I don't understand...

- Come in officer, I'll explain.

Walking without thinking, I sat down in front of the new chief.

- What happened, Officer Hopps, is that when I married Pigtorn, we agreed that I would leave the force... which I should never have done... he plunged this district into misery and violence. I made a grave mistake over 30 years ago...but I am willing to make it right...so I can continue my treatment and train my successor.

- But... Why did your husband leave the force?

- Harassment of a female officer.

- What the...

- Hopps, I know all about it, I read the messages he was sending you... I am so sorry... you came in your best disposition, and naivety, I might add... but I took care of it. I liked your plan... I'll go along with it, if you agree.

- It would be an honor! In fact I have a new recruit who would love to help out.

- Bogo's son? That would be interesting.

I swear I didn't understand what the hell happened... but whatever it was... I'm totally grateful.

Stop recording-Hopps 2-O

-So... are you going to tell me what the hell you used Randy's service for, our hacking genius? - The fennec fox sipped his protein drink while watching his friend.

- Since when do you watch your weight?

- I asked first, Wilde.

- I can't tell you much... thanks for contacting him... let's just say he helped me in a harassment case and to convey a message. - Nick settled further into the chair, pulling his legs up onto the table. Putting Bianca to sleep was quite a feat, she was a little ball of energy, he lowered the volume of the TV so as not to wake her up.

- A message? What the hell are you talking about?

- That nobody messes with my partner. She is no longer alone, although she insists on being alone.

Finnick looked at him curiously... he preferred to stay out of other people's business and enjoy the horrible Pawflix movie.

Far away, Judy walked through the dark streets of Happy Town, with one goal in mind. With much greater confidence than the previous time, she climbed the stairs and rang the doorbell.

After a couple of rings, the doe clearly heard footsteps approaching and opening the door.

- Good evening, I am Officer...

- Judith Hopps, I know Officer, you're famous. - Lilian said quite seriously.

- Oh, well, I don't like to consider myself famous... Do you think I could come in for a moment?

The vixen stared at her for a few moments, surprised, stepped aside and motioned for her to come in.

- Your house is very nice. - As a mental note, Judy noticed that the wallpaper in the living room matched her partner's hideous green shirt.

- Come with me to the kitchen, I was just finishing cooking.

- Bianca's porridge, right? She loves crickets... I am really grateful to her, I would never have known how to cook them.

- This visit is about my son, isn't it? Did something bad happen to him? - She said dryly.

- Oh no, Nick is fine... this was more… a social visit. Your son and I are good friends.

- I know... a very generous gesture coming from such a renowned officer, Officer Hopps.

- Please Mrs. Wilde, just Judy! I know it's your birthday today and I brought you a little present, I hope you...

- I don't need your gifts, Officer Hopps. - She emphasized her name. -I don't need atoning charity from you.

- What do you mean? - The doe's smile slowly faded.

- Just what I said, I'm not going to be part of your guilt-cleansing charity project to make the predators forget your poison words.

- I... - The doe knew just which ones she meant.

- I don't need any more of your cheap apologies... I have no use for them and I don't need them... I will never forgive anyone who has done so much harm to my son.

- I do not understand.

- Don't you? Let me make it clear to you Hopps! - Her tone sounded sour and authoritative, fully expressing the hatred she claimed to feel. - Do you know what it's like to be a social outcast? To have to have the job that no one wants to have? To endure stares, false accusations, insults and slander, just because you were born a fox? The answer is no. You have an extremely privileged position, of course you will never understand that. The Wilde family has worked their asses off to survive all their lives... and after so many years of caring for my son's heart you come along, delude him and betray him at the first opportunity, just when he had just helped you.

- It wasn't like that... - Tears were beginning to appear.

- Of course it was like that! And not happy with everything, you complicated the lives of all of us, duplicating our problems, his problems... and you walked away unpunished! You coward! But you come back again, you use my son again to clear your name, putting him at the greatest risk of his life!

My son has a golden heart, that's why he has forgiven you... but I will never be able to do it. Sooner or later, you will fail him again, putting him in danger every day... you are the worst thing that ever happened to him. Now, get the hell out of my house, and if you have any decency, stay away from him. Maybe you thought he was alone, but as long as I'm alive, Nicholas will always have his mother to defend him!

Judy felt her legs like jelly... She walked to the door, not looking back, she could only hear the door slam behind her.

I have always read stories where Mrs. Wilde practically adopts Judy, very few where she doesn't, and I felt that this would be the most natural reaction of a mother, she also has contacts to take care of her son.
