Hutch listened to Starsky moaning about the state of the Torino's tires (tyres) for about fifteen minutes before he said anything. He felt he was showing remarkable restraint but, when Starsky said for the umpteenth time that he had no money to pay for new tires, that was it.
"Gordo? How about you take back that ridiculous watch you bought last week? Then you'd be able to afford new tires!"
Starsky looked at him with uncomprehending eyes. "What?"
"Take back that watch, pay for the tires and stop moaning about how you don't have any money!"
"But…but I like my watch."
"Well, you spent what? Three hundred dollars? For something that tells the time. You could get a watch for ten and then pay for your tires with money to spare."
Starsky looked incredulous. "Ten dollars! On a watch!"
"Yes, that's what most normal people spend. You could go to twenty if you want something nicer but…" he trailed off, seeing the look on Starsky's face, and sighed. Then he thought of something and tried another tack. "Okay, that's fine. You like your watch, fine. But till you get those new tires, we'd better take my car to work."
Monday morning saw Starsky picking up Hutch in the Torino, which had bright new shiny tires. Hutch tried, but failed, to hide the know-it-all look on his face as he climbed in beside his partner.
"Nice tires."
"Hmpph."
