Gus
He couldn't believe how unlucky he was. Well not so unlucky after all, since he had an understanding boss and a roof over his head. Still his car had decided to die on the freeway, making him wait for AAA for hours before having to walk home to Andy's since he could not afford the premium membership and have someone drive him back home. The bus routes were very shitty, at best and he needed to walk out his anger and frustration.
Upon arrival, he typed his code into the door's keypad. He still couldn't believe a police officer had something so unsafe but Gus had to admit it was rather convenient. Andy had told him like a thousand times that it was super safe, that two of his tech coworkers had installed it after his housekeeper kept on losing her keys, the young man was still not convinced. In his rant against the door, he did not notice the gray sedan parked in front of the house. What he noticed, though, was the pair of heels carefully placed on the right side of the mat as well as the brown coat on the hallway hanger. He didn't know Andy had a girlfriend but he supposed it was none of his business. He suddenly felt really bad to be coming home when he was supposed to be out for hours.
He walked noiselessly in the hallway, wanting to hide in his room and not annoy his gracious host. But the bathroom door was slightly open. And the woman was moaning. His curiosity was stronger than him, he had to take a peek. He had to bring his hand to his mouth and stifle his gasp. Wow. He did not expect that! He wondered if Rusty knew his mother was dating her lieutenant. He sure as hell wouldn't tell him that! Especially now that he saw the gray hair man kissing her neck in what seemed to be a delightful way .
"Jesus, my balls are shrinking! Are we taking a bath or you're cooking me, woman?" He heard Andy say. Gus couldn't help but grimace at those words. It was such an Andy thing to say but he did not imagine the classy captain liking it. She laughed though. He heard splashing and a door opened. Panicked, he looked around to see if he was about to get caught. Andy was just rinsing himself in the shower before enveloping himself in his bathrobe and sitting on the floor at the bathtub edge.
Gus had a very limited experience of relationships. His parents' one was unhealthy, violent. He knew that he would try all his life to avoid reproducing it. The ones he had were fun but he never got attached. He never let himself get attached. In fact, he only had physical relationships. So, he expected that the two other adults would soon engage in adult activities and started to walk to his door.
"What were we saying before you boiled me over?" He heard Andy say and stopped for a second, curious.
The woman laughed, again, before answering. "Oh I was telling you about my next visit to Ricky. I can't believe Rusty accepted to come ! I'm so excited to show him San Francisco. Can you believe he's never been there and that he lives with me for four years!" Her enthusiasm was easily noticeable.
"Well the kid did not have too much luck in life before. You managed to bring him to New York to see Emily, that's something!"
"Yes, it is." She laughed. "What I can't understand is that he's ok to travel to the other side of the country but makes such a fuss when I suggest we go a few hours away." She said, a note of worry in her voice.
"The car, Babe." Responded the lieutenant. Some water noises caught Gus' attention and he had to see what was going on. Sharon had taken one of her legs out of the water, resting it on the edge of the tub where Andy could caress it.
"What about the car?" Asked the mother. "He drives everyday and I don't think he's motion sick."
"I think it has to do more with him living in his car. Maybe he has some bad memories he's not ready to share with you yet. Maybe he's just carsick and too proud to say it."
"Mmhhh, you might be right. I'll talk to him." They both got quiet for a while. Gus could smell the nice odor of the burning candles and the soft voice of Norah Jones playing in the room. When they resumed talking, several songs later, it was to comment on the later game of some team. He wasn't sure which sport they were talking about but they both seemed passionate about it.
Feeling bad to have spied on them, knowing that the bath would run cold soon, he decided to go and hide in his room. There, in the safe haven of Andy's place, he wondered what he had just witnessed. It was nothing like he ever experienced. There was some sexual connotation to it, in the way Sharon moaned, in the way they kissed but it wasn't what transpired most of their evening. It was the quietness and the security they found in each other. He never confided in anyone, whereas it was for some frivolous stuff like sports or more important matters. It seemed so easy. It seemed… It seemed like something he'd like to try one day. See how it feels to share your day with someone, share your burden, just talk and enjoy each other's presence. They made it seem so … doable. He wondered if he could try it, with Rusty.
