(Intruder)

I stood in the distance, watching the girl as she sat on the cliff face next to the russet colored man, dangling her legs with him over the edge.

I watched a safe distance away, keeping just the right amount of range to keep from alerting the wolf to my presence.

It had taken months of experimenting to find every little chink in the pack's collective armor.

When he had first approached me about the job- I nearly turned it down. How interesting can one of my kind find a human girl? But when he'd named his price, I couldn't resist. Watch the girl and report back to him- simple enough to get what I want. It almost felt like a waste of my gift as a tracker.

But then….

Then I realized this wasn't a normal human girl. My kind had thought her people long extinct- but yet here she sits.

I hadn't laid eyes on a child of the stars in centuries.

Suddenly his interests made sense.

If that hadn't been profound enough, then I discovered the wolves.

Another species that had been allegedly extinct.

And I found myself glad I'd taken the job.

Absentmindedly I flipped the burner phone he'd given me, as I balanced myself on the fir branch, listening to the couple's monotonous conversation.

Just when I'd thought my mind would decay from boredom- the pack member interrupted himself and sprang to his feet, cursing and bidding the girl to wait.

Interesting.

I watched as he strode back and forth, a scowl on his face- but no words uttered.

I've seen them do this before.

The best I could tell was that the pack had some sort of telepathy- it reminded me of the man that hired me.

I didn't know the details- yet. But I intended to find out- we had a progress report scheduled in three days.

The wolf immediately turned and strode purposefully back to the girl, helping her to her feet.

"Something pack related has come up, so I'm going to take you to Emily's for a while, okay?"

"Uhm, sure, okay." Disappointment colored her voice.

"I won't be long, okay?"

They'd returned to his motorcycle. As he prepared her for the ride I flipped down from my spot in the fir, preparing myself to follow from a safe distance.

I followed them, remaining hidden by the tree line. I could no longer see them due to the required distance, but I could hear every turn they took, every heart beat.

Finally they shut off the engine, telling me they'd reached their destination.

"Please tell me she's going to be okay, Sam." A new female voice.

"Of course she will, we'll get her through this. I promise, Emily." A new, familiar voice.

That's right, I'm ninety percent sure he's their alpha.

"Who in all's gone to go get her?"

"No one, I wouldn't let anyone else go. We didn't trust anyone else."

"I wish you could go, Sam. I wouldn't be so worried if it were you."

"I know, but Paul has history with Leah, too." An edge to his voice. "Bring her to me safe, Paul."

"Just remember our deal, and what about the other member?"

"Him, I didn't mind sending the other's after. It's Seth, they shouldn't have too much trouble calming him down."

Very interesting.

I continued to listen as I slowly edged myself closer, testing out the limit of the established distance. The legends were true- the wolves had excellent senses.

But mine are better.

I had started to turn to follow the wolf, but had thought better of it.

The only female I had any interest in was the one I'd been hired to follow. But a new wolf could make an interesting report.

I can learn a lot from him.

But more importantly-

I can test the star child.

I began to put my plan in motion.
