Meredith smiled as she took the stairs two by two, she was so excited for her new niece or nephew, that her heart was racing. She was supposed to meet them at the hospital and be there while Jo labored, but with no one else to watch the kids she'd have to support Jo via a phone call. Still, she was giddy and bounded up the stairs.

"Alex!" Jo's scream came out in a longing moan as Meredith followed her voice into the bathroom.

"Jo, I'm here," Meredith said, grabbing the towel on the rack next to her. "Come on, let's go."

She held up the towel for Jo as she opened the door to the shower. Jo had both of her hands on the bar gripping it for dear life. She breathed or at least tried to, but it came out in quick breaths and Meredith could tell she was in the middle of a contraction. She reached out and turned off the water as she stepped in, putting the towel over Jo's back before putting counter pressure on her hips. Jo let out a sigh of relief before the contraction passed and her breathing evened out.

"Come on, let's get you to the hospital," Meredith said, putting an arm around her shoulders as she tried to guide her out, but Jo remained where she was.

"I'm having a baby!" Jo moaned to her as she stood in the shower with her eyes closed.

"Yes I know," Meredith said, trying to urge Jo out of the shower.

"Meredith, I'm having this baby right now! I can feel their head between my legs!" Jo said as Meredith noted her position.

Her legs were wide and she was slightly crouched, Meredith knelt and looked between her legs, "I don't see the head?"

"I can feel it, they're in the birth canal and I have been pushing," Jo said, exacerbated by the situation as she cried. "I want Alex."

"Come on, let's at least get you into the bedroom where you can lay down and I can examine you."

"No I don't want to leave the shower," Jo moaned, as Meredith grabbed another towel and dried off her legs.

"I know, but you gotta, come on Jo," Meredith said, putting the towel around her waist as Meredith put her arms around her.

"Fine," Jo huffed as Meredith moved to hold her up as she hobbled into the bedroom. "Where's Alex?"

"He'll be up in a second," Meredith reassured her although she looked towards the bedroom door.

"Alex get up here!" Jo screamed as she reached for the edge of the bed.

She knew their daughters needed him, but she was in labor. She was having their third child and she needed him more. She wanted him. She couldn't do this without him.

Meredith helped her sit down on the bed as Jo wrapped the towels tighter around her shoulders. She shivered and her teeth chattered from the sudden change to the cool bedroom. Meredith got her another blanket and wrapped it around her. Jo laid down on her back and sighed as she closed her eyes. But then another contraction hit as she moaned and rolled onto her side. Meredith rubbed her back as Jo reached out for her and Meredith held her hand until it was over.

"Where do you guys keep the emergency first aid kit," Meredith asked, looking around the room.

"The closet, it's the black bag on the left top shelf," Jo said pointing to it as Meredith ran off to grab it.

When she came back, Jo rolled on her back and scooted up to lean against the pillows as she sat up. Meredith pulled on a pair of gloves, as Jo let her legs fall apart. Meredith looked up at her before Jo nodded and let Meredith check her cervix. Her heartbeat was like a drum in her ears and Jo felt like she was going in and out of it. She could barely feel her hand over the pressure and pain of her baby's head. Still, she saw Meredith's eyes widen and Jo knew her baby was already in the birth canal.

When Meredith pulled back she stripped off her gloves before she had reattached Jo's heart monitor. Meredith's face didn't look pleased as she stared at the monitor before she quickly whipped out her phone.

"Who are you calling? Please call Alex," Jo said, although when Meredith looked at her, Jo knew who she was calling.

"Yes, this is Dr. Gray I'm at 4253 4th Street, Seattle, 98109, and my friend, Dr. Jo Karev, is in labor, and her heart is also in distress. I need an ambulance at this address right away and I need you to contact Dr. Pierce at Gray-Sloan Hospital."

Meredith paused to listen and Jo closed her eyes. She moaned as another contraction came and put a hand on her belly, over her baby. With her other hand, she squeezed Meredith's hand hard enough that her fingers turned white.

"Yes, she's been pushing and her contractions are less than three minutes apart."

Jo couldn't hear the 911 operator on the other end of the line. Although she threw her head back she felt urged to push again. She gritted her teeth and bore down with all her might as she started to push. She knew for the sake of her baby and her heart she had to. She could deliver this baby on her own and she would.

As soon as it ended she fell back into the pillows and cried, Alex should be her and so she screamed for him. "Alex, Alex!"

It was getting to be unbearable. The contractions were minutes if not seconds apart. Her heartbeat was in her ears and she felt like she was underwater as she cried an ocean of tears.

"I want Alex!" Jo cried to Meredith, she was still talking to the 911 operator, but she nodded and grabbed Jo's hand before she hung up and dropped her phone on the floor.

"Alexander, get up here before your wife has this baby without you!" Meredith yelled at him, her voice echoing through the hall.

Jo cried out as another contraction hit her. She screamed as she realized she had to push.

"Jo you're doing so good, just a little bit longer," Meredith said, as she took Jo's left leg, put it over her shoulder, and reached between her legs to catch the baby.

Jo knew she was close now. When she opened her eyes she saw Alex, standing there in the doorway, his jaw dropped in shock as he stared at her.

"Get over here!" Jo screamed as she reached out for him before he snapped out of it and ran over to her.

"I'm right here, I got you," Alex said as he grabbed her outstretched hand and she gripped it with all her might.

Putting his arm around her shoulders, he helped her sit up. Jo leaned into him and turned her face into his shoulder. When the contraction was over Jo looked at him to see that he was looking down and watching their baby be born. She took the moment to rest and she squirmed around trying to get comfortable against the headboard. Alex felt her move and pulled her forward as he crawled in behind her. Jo sighed as she leaned against his back and he put a hand on her forehead brushing away the little strands of hair that had escaped from her bun.

"Okay Jo, just a few more pushes in your baby's going to be here," Meredith said with a smile.

"Are they going to be okay," Jo asked with tears in her eyes. "They have to be okay, they have to."

"Don't worry, your baby is going to be just fine," Meredith said as she looked over at them. "Besides, you got the best pediatrician right here."

Meredith looked over at Alex as he nodded, although he didn't smile, his eyebrows almost touched, and the lines on his forehead were so deep, she thought they would be permanent. Jo felt the next contraction as she bore down.

"That's great Jo, push," Meredith said, looking down again.

"You got this Jo, you're so strong," Alex whispered sweet words in her ear.

The next thing she knew the pain was over and she felt her baby leave her body. Jo closed her eyes in relief, taking a moment to rest. Then she realized she hadn't heard the sounds of her baby cry and sat up. Before she could reach for her baby, a strong cry pierced through the room.

Meredith held up their baby with a smiling laugh. In her arms was this pink dark-haired little girl who threw her arms out and kicked and screamed. She almost wiggled out of Meredith's arms as she laid her on Jo's chest.

Jo laid back against Alex and wrapped her hands around her baby. Tears of joy streamed down her face as the emotions overwhelmed her and she laughed along with Meredith's. She didn't know what else to do at that moment. She only laughed, smiled, and cried. Their baby was here, she was here. Jo leaned down and kissed the top of their head, even though it was covered in meconium, she didn't care.

"Hi baby girl, you're here."

"She's here, she's okay," Alex said as the lines disappeared from his forehead and he had the biggest smile. His eyes sparkled with tears and joy as he kissed the side of her head. "You're amazing, Jo. I'm so proud of you. Thank you, thank you."

Meredith let out a breath as she sat back and they grew quiet for a moment, staring at the baby girl in front of them. Her little girl still screamed as Jo patted her back and Alex put the towel that had been around her shoulders over both of them. It was then that Jo realized she was still completely naked and shivered.

Her teeth clattered together, but Alex and Meredith quickly covered her up. Blankets were thrown over her with disregard for the mess and Jo was a little bit out of it, but as she started to feel warm, she closed her eyes and let them take care of her. She couldn't really focus on anything other than the baby girl in her arms. Meredith and Alex checked both of them over and her heart rate had gone back to normal, and her baby had perfect APGAR scores.

Now that they were both settled again, Alex took a moment to become enamored with their daughter. He stared at both of them with stars in his eyes and a smile that never left his lips.

"She's so tiny," Alex said, holding their baby's hand as he looked down at her in awe.

"She is not. She got a big head, Alex," Jo complained, the memories of the baby's head coming out of her still vivid in her mind.

"You said you liked my head," Alex said with a chuckle, as he smiled at her.

"I do like your head. I just don't like it when it's coming out of my vagina and tearing me open from one end to the other."

"Speaking of which, you tore a little bit but it shouldn't be anything more than a few stitches," Meredith reassured her, as Jo nodded.

She felt a deep ache between your legs that she didn't want to acknowledge just yet and Meredith was trying to keep an eye on her bleeding. Instead, she looked at her baby girl. She had calmed down and closed her eyes again as she peacefully rested in Jo's arms. She was everything and Jo got to know her daughter.
