Chapter Five

Anna was three weeks away from her due date, and the babies were growing nicely. It seemed she could give birth at any time. She and Mary really wanted to finalize names for their babies before they were born, but so far they had only discussed it in passing, and they had liked nearly every name that had been mentioned, which made it difficult to narrow things down.

As they cuddled in bed one morning, they decided to make a list and narrow down the options they were considering.

"So far, for baby girl, we have Olivia, Alex, and Nova. And for baby boy, Tyler, Chris, and Alex as well," Anna recapped. "Anything stand out to you?"

"Not so far, but I have another name I like for a boy," Mary replied.

"What is it?"

"Liam."

"Liam," Anna repeated. "I like that a lot. Liam Crawley."

"And how about Smith for a middle name?"

Anna smiled, tears forming in the corner of her eyes. It meant so much to her that their baby boy would have the honor of sharing part of his name with her father. She had loved her father so dearly, and she knew he would have made an amazing and loving grandfather if he was still alive. "Liam Smith Crawley," she said, testing out the name on tongue as she ran her hand tenderly over her stomach. Feeling a kick against her bump, she knew instantly that was to be her baby boy's name because, in her mind anyway, he was already responding to it.

"I have an idea for baby girl's name," Anna said after a time. "It goes quite well with Liam in my opinion."

"Oh yeah?"

"Mhm," Anna nodded, leaning her head onto her wife's shoulder and explaining, "I was thinking about Lila. I've not been able to get that name out of my head for months. I don't know why, really, but I just think it suits her."

"Our babies are already building such a connection with you. If you feel that strongly, I take that as a sign of your connection with her. Lila was meant to be her name."

"What do you think, little miss?" Anna looked at her bump, running her hand along it slightly as she spoke. "Is your name Lila Crawley?"

Sure enough, Anna felt another kick against her hand just as she had felt with her son moments earlier. Seeing her wife's smile upon feeling the motion beneath her hand, Mary knew they had just come to a conclusion. "It's decided then," she said.

"It is," Anna agreed. "But we still need a middle name."

"What about something with an S?" Mary suggested. "So they can have matching initials. That's kind of fun I think."

"Yeah," Anna concurred. "What are some options you like?"

"I had thought about Samantha, but I'm not sure how well it goes together."

"Hmm, it's a bit girly. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but with her having such a feminine first name, maybe we oughta look for something a little more gender neutral for a middle name."

"Ooo, I like that," Mary agreed to her wife's suggestion, immediately pulling out her phone and searching for baby name lists. "Let's see, there's Sawyer, Sage, Skyler–"

"Sage is nice," Anna suggested, "Let's keep that on the back burner while we keep looking."

Mary agreed and scrolled down on her phone, showing her wife the continued list of options. Their eyes both fell on the same name at the same time. It was different from anything else they had considered, but it was perfect.

"Sutton," Anna said, quietly reading the name out loud.

"Lila Sutton Crawley," Mary said, still looking at the name on the screen. It was a name that doubled as a surname, something which she felt matched well with Smith being Liam's middle name, and it just had a ring to it which she somehow knew matched her daughter. While she had yet to meet her baby girl, she just knew this name suited her. She and Anna both knew it, looking over at one another with a nod and a smile to affirm their choice.

"The perfect name for our perfect little girl," Anna breathed.

"Our children are perfect, and so are you," Mary said, lifting up her wife's chin to press a soft kiss to her lips. "You're going to make an amazing mother, Anna."

"So are you," Anna told her, "I love you."

"I love you, too," Mary breathed, leaning in closer to her wife as she spoke. "I love you so much."

Their mouths were on each other again after that. Soon enough, their tongues had entwined and they were showing their deep love for another through a deep yet gentle kiss.

Anna was now 37 and a half weeks pregnant, and she was in labor. She and Mary had both woken up around 6am that morning, and Anna began having contractions during breakfast. They had made sure they were real before heading to the hospital a couple hours later. At her last prenatal appointment, the doctor had informed Anna the babies had been in a good position for a natural birth, and when they arrived at the hospital, it was confirmed they still were.

They were given a room and told it would likely be a while before Anna was fully dilated and ready to push, but they would be checking in on her periodically until then. The two mothers-to -be were left in the room, talking about their excitement for a future with their babies while Anna labored in the bed. After a while, she decided she needed to get up and walk around. Mary took her side and rubbed her back gently as they walked around. After a little while, a nurse came in to check Anna's progress and suggested a position they could try which might relieve Anna's aching hips and back somewhat.

Mary sat in a chair as Anna kneeled in front of her, placing her head into her wife's lap tiredly. Mary reached around and massaged her wife's hips and lower back in the manner the nurse suggested as Anna sighed with relief. "Oh, this is helping," Anna murmured to her wife, gratitude pouring out in her tired voice.

"Anything I can do to help, I will," Mary assured her lovingly.

"I love you."

"I love you, too," Mary promised, pressing a gentle kiss to her wife's hair.

Soon enough, Doctor Henley was in the room to check on Anna's progress again. She was now six centimeters dilated, and the doctor recommended she get the epidural they had talked about now before the contractions got too close together for it to be administered. "I assure you we can keep it at the low dosage medication we talked about previously. If that's still what you want?" the doctor asked.

Anna nodded. "Yes, please," she said, clearly glad she could still have her birth plan followed. Mary could tell she was in pain, but she was being an absolute trooper as she wanted her babies to be brought into this world this way.

The doctor administered the mobile epidural. Anna wasn't numb and could still walk around if she chose to, but she didn't have a lot of energy for that anymore. She decided to stay in bed for the time being, changing positions periodically so that she could be more comfortable. As she got into a position on her side, she felt her waters break and told Mary to go inform the nurse. The nurse quickly checked on her, determining she was now nine centimeters dilated.

From that point on the doctors and the delivery team for each baby remained in the room. Things progressed quickly, and Anna soon felt the urge to push. The doctor doubled checked on the baby's position, feeling along Anna's stomach with her hands and using an ultrasound machine, determining the baby was still in the proper position for birth and showing no signs of fetal distress. "All is well, Anna," Doctor Henley assured, "Whenever you're ready, go ahead and give me a big push."

Anna nodded and gripped Mary's hand. "You got this," Mary whispered to her lovingly. Anna smiled appreciatively before scrunching up her face and beginning to push.

After about 15 minutes, the baby's head was out. Soon enough, she felt her baby slip out of her entirely and heard a cry, nearly bursting into tears upon hearing that sound. Mary, too, had tears in her eyes.

"Baby B is here first. Your little boy," Doctor Henley informed them. "Mary, if you'd like to cut the cord, you may."

Mary stepped over to where the nurse was prepped with the clamp for her to use. She looked down at her baby, studying him for a moment before she focused on snipping the cord. "Hello there, Liam," she said, cooing at him for a moment before the nurses carried him over to the station they had set up to clean and weigh him. "Anna, he's absolutely beautiful," Mary told her wife as she resumed her place by her side.

"I can't wait to meet him properly," Anna whispered with a smile before her attention was brought once again to her labor.

"Anna, I'm just going to check baby girl's positioning, and then you can push once I give you the all clear," Doctor Henley informed her.

Soon enough, the doctor had determined all was well yet again and gave Anna the go ahead to begin pushing again. Fourteen minutes after Liam made his way into the world, Lila was here too. The doctor placed the screaming baby girl on her stomach for a moment, and Anna gently ran her hand along her baby girl's back and whispered hello to her.

Mary was able to cut the cord again quietly whispering to her baby as she did so. "Welcome to the world, little miss Lila Sutton," she said before allowing the nurse to weigh and clean her.

Once the afterbirth had been delivered and Anna had been cleaned up and given the minor stitch she needed, the nurse handed her her son. She looked down at her little boy, marveling over every little detail of him. She was in love with his wispy dark hair and tiny nose. "He's got your nose," Mary pointed out with a smile, tenderly running her hand along her little boy's arm before turning her attention to watch as their little girl was being cleaned and measured by the nurse. She was squawking and kicking her legs, already a feisty one much like she had been in Anna's womb.

Eventually, the nurse brought their daughter over to them. "Your little girl is just a tiny bit smaller than her brother, but not by much. However, she is certainly more fiercely determined not to stay in my arms than he was," the nurse said as she gently shifted the baby into Anna's arms. Anna chuckled and reached for the baby. Once both babies were settled, she began to coo at them.

"Oh, look at you, two peas in a pod," Anna said softly, stroking her fingers lightly over each of her babies' cheeks. "Mary, they're both so beautiful."

"They are," Mary agreed, gently smiling over the three of them. "We are so incredibly blessed."

"We are," Anna agreed, feeling the most joy in her heart she had ever felt before. Her heart was bursting, and she couldn't wait for the future that lay ahead for her, Mary and their babies.
