Chapter 2 - Close As Strangers

Sasuke's eyes followed her into the crowd, she turned the corner to her house and he lost her. How could Sakura, the girl who had loved him since she was twelve — or even younger, break up with him?

No, two people would have to be in a relationship for there to be a breakup. She gave up on him, which was so much worse. They hadn't started, barely begun to talk about a possible relationship between the two of them. In a way, he understood why she felt the need to move on and in more ways than one, he felt hurt that she gave up on him.

A pair of drunken men stumbled out of the bar, clinging to each other for stability, but bumped into Sasuke.

"Hey! Wat-ch where you goingggg," one of them slurred at him.

Sasuke glared at them with his crimson sharingan whirling in his eye.

The men fell back. "U-Uchiha-san! We're sorry!" The two ran in the opposite direction.

"Oi, Sasuke!" Naruto called from behind. "Are you alright?"

Sasuke sighed. "Fine, just some drunk idiots,"

"I meant with Sakura,"

Sasuke grabbed and pinched one of Naruto's cheeks.

"Oww! Oi, what are you doing bastard!"

"You were eavesdropping, idiot." He let go of his best friend's whiskered cheek.

"But! I had to! She was crying,"

Sasuke raised an eyebrow. "She was?"

"Dumbass! What's the point of having two kekkei genkais if you're not using your eyes!" Naruto breathed out an exasperated sigh. "You need to be more receptive to Sakura-chan's feelings, she's not a child that will follow you to the ends of the earth anymore, she deserves someone who loves and treats her right."

How is he supposed to do that? Almost all his life he thought of becoming stronger, avenging his family and restoring his clad. There was nothing of love and dating and marriage in his young mind. All of the normal human desires and emotions he needed to discover. He walked away, leaving Naruto in front of the restaurant.

Sasuke opened the door to the small apartment Kakashi got for him whenever he came back to the village to visit. It felt cold and abandoned, and a thin layer of dust shrouded his furniture. He showered and changed his bedsheets for a fresh one. He sunk into the surprisingly soft mattress, but having spent many nights on the hard ground, anything seemed luxurious. Thoughts of Sakura and his family circled his mind, keeping him from enjoying a decent night's sleep. His love for his mother and brother came naturally to him, he didn't have to fight for their approval like with his father. He always pushed himself to his breaking point to obtain his father's praise and affection. Even before the death of his clan, Sasuke didn't have many friends, to be honest with Itachi by his side, he didn't need anyone else. He was lucky enough to have his teammates, Naruto, Kakashi and Sakura. They all tried their best to bring him out of the darkness that was rooted in him and showed him another path to living. Sasuke opened his eyes to the blanket of darkness in his room, he realized he didn't know one thing about Sakura's past. He never met her parents, she wasn't a part of a ninja clan so naturally he hadn't heard of her family when he was younger. He wrote her off as another love-obsessed girl who had a crush on him, someone who never really knew him or his past. He shut his heavy eyes and allowed whatever thoughts to come and go in and out of his mind.

Morning came and brought a drizzle of rain, something Sasuke needed as she stirred in bed. The rain hitting his roof sounded him off to sleep again. Someone knocked on the front door. He ignored it, the chakra he sensed was chinuin or lower, most likely a messenger sent by Kakashi. Another round of knocks hit his door, this time much lower and more intrusive. Grunting, he flipped off his sheets and shot up, ingoing the cool shiver from the cold hard wooden floors. The man jumped at the sudden sight of a vexed Uchiha.

"What?" Sasuke growled.

"Uh, sorry Uchina-san, but Lord Hokage would like to see you-"

Sasuke wasted no time and shut the door in the man's face. He climbed back into bed and allowed sleep to take over once more. However, sleep refused to come, he wondered what Kakashi wanted. It was uncommon for him to bother him whenever he came back to the village. Was there a problem? What could be so important he had to call him early in the morning? He got up and got ready to head over to Kakashi's office. He raised out of bed with a low grunt.

That man better have a kunai lodged in his chest.

"Nice to see you could make it," Kakashi said, leaning back into his chair. And with no kunai piercing his body or other immediate danger judging from his former sensei's slothful expression.

"What's this about?"

"Patience, Sasuke, we have to wait for another member to arrive,"

Sasuke rolled his eyes. He'd known Kakashi for a long time, as long as his teammates, and he was now the Hokage surely he would know about Sakura's past.

"Hey…" Sasuke began.

Kakashi lazily lifted his gaze to him.

"What do you know about Sakura's parents?"

"What brought this up?" He eyed him with a novelty and Sasuke wanted to stab a kunai through him.

"Do you know or not?"

"Hmm." Kakashi put his thumb and index finger around his chin. "Her mother's name is Mebuki and her father is Kizashi, I met them a handful of times for tea. They're average people, neither of them were shinobi. They're polite and from what I heard Mebuki throws a mean kick."

Sasuke found it odd that her parents were so normal and had a child who ended up being a ninja. It wasn't like Sakura grew up around shinobi in her house, the only way she would have been exposed was through the academy and even there was low-level action of what it means to become a ninja.

"Do you know why Sakura wanted to become a ninja?"

Kakashi eyed him closely. "Hmm, why don't you ask her?"

Sasuke was about to open his mouth when a knock on the door interrupted him.

"Come in!" Kakashi sang out.

"Sorry, I'm late, Kakashi-sensei!"

Sasuke sucked in a tiny breath, to know he was talking about her so openly where she could have heard was too close for comfort.

"It's okay, Sakura, me and Sasuke were having an interesting conversation, right?"
Sasuke shot daggers at his fromer sensei.

"Now, on to business." Kakashi picked up a file on his desk and his lazy eyes scanned through it. "I have a mission for the two of you,"

He was afraid of that. Sasuke narrowed his eyes to Sakura, if she was nervous, she hid it well under her calm demeanour.

"Now, this is a B-rank mission, way above your ledge, however, I think a little change is good. You are to travel to the Land of Sun, in a remote village called Kaisui, which is a beachy tourist attraction. Their leader, Touwa Hara, has a notorious brother, Fuyutake, who will be visiting the village soon. Fuyutake is seen as a threat to the other officials because he has on more than one occasion threatened Touwa's life. Touwa believes his brother will try to take his position and will stop at nothing,"

"So we'll be Touwa's bodyguards, right?" Sakura asked.

"Right, when you get there, Touwa will fill you in on the details. If Fuyutake or anyone tries anything with Touwa, we are told to use whatever means necessary. You leave in two days. Understood?"

"Yes!"

Kakashi smiled. "Great, you're dismissed."

Sakura turned to leave but Kakashi called for her. "Hey, Sakura,"

"Yeah?"

Kakashi's eyes darted to Sasuke and he inwardly flinched.

"Sasuke wanted to ask you something,"

He's a dead man!

"Oh, okay." Sakura looked up at him. "What is it?"

Sasuke froze. What was he supposed to say? To Ask?

She stared up at him with bright jade eyes. He noticed her hair was longer and had a soft side part instead of the middle part she wore throughout her childhood and teenage years. It made her Byakugou Seal less noticeable like it was an accessory to her rather than something that defined her.

Wait, why am I staring?! Hurry up and say something!

"Nothi-"

A low growling in his stomach cut off his words. He turned his head when Kakashi chuckled to himself.

"Sorry?" Sakura asked.

"Nothing! Nevermind!" He snapped.

Shit.

She frowned. "Okay, see you later, I guess." She walked out without paying him another thought.

Kakashi smiled under his mask. "Very smooth."

"Shut up!" Sasuke threw a kunai at him, cutting off a few strands of his white hair.

"Now, Sasuke, killing the Hokage is punishable by death,"

"Tsk." He left his former teacher's office with a hard slam of the door.

Outside the tower, he saw Sakura talking with the messenger chunin from that morning. He stepped back so he wouldn't be spotted. He didn't know why he was hiding.

The chunin rubbed the back of his neck. "Uh, Sakura-san, do you want to go on a date with me?"

Sasuke couldn't believe he was asking her out so openly in public. Sakura's mouth parted slightly and she narrowed her eyes in thought. Thought? What's there to think about? Shouldn't she be rejecting him by now? Telling him to get lost the same way she did when they were younger. Sasuke clenched his teeth. Naruto's warning from last night entered his mind, how he might lose her to someone else sooner or later.

Sakura smiled warmly. "Sure! But I have a mission soon,"

"That's okay when you get back then." The flustered guy breathed out.

She nodded."Yeah, looking forward to it." She strolled away. He thought he was sly and alone but Sasuke caught the guy eying her butt with a creepy grin. Sasuke's pulse accelerated against his neck, it took everything in him not to activate Amaterasu and burn the guy into ashes. He shook his head and let out a long, low sigh. He needed to find some breakfast, maybe that accounted for his short temper. He ignored the way his chest felt tight and hollow, and the way it hurt that she moved on so quickly.

A/N: Jealous Sasuke isn't something I knew I needed loll. Also I never really shipped Sasuke and Sakura together, those two never did it for me and my main ship was KakaSaku. However, the blank period SasuSaku designs were just so good not to utilize. And there was so much potential during the blank period for Kishimoto to create a cute romance for them. But we know Kishimoto can't write romance to save his life so I guess I'll do it. Plus blank period fanart is amazing.
