Chapter 5: The Intricate Threads of the Past
The tent fluttered in the breeze blowing from the Trident River, while inside, Rhaegar Targaryen, with a serious expression and his gaze fixed on the horizon, ordered Ser Barristan Selmy to bring the captured Lord Eddard. Meanwhile, Daenerys, seated in a corner of the tent, reflected on the figure of Ned Stark and how his honor had shaped the life of Jon Snow, her brother's son.
Daenerys, with a trembling voice, decided to share her thoughts with Rhaegar, aware that her words could disturb him.
"After your death in that possible future, Lyanna died in childbirth, giving birth to a child who was adopted by Ned Stark as his bastard. Jon grew up believing he was a bastard, and the stigma attached to illegitimate children deeply marked him. When he finally discovered his true identity as a Targaryen, he could not accept it and rejected our house and me."
Rhaegar, with a heavy heart from the consequences of his actions, felt a wave of pain and guilt upon hearing Daenerys's words.
"Jon has a sense of honor almost to the extreme. I am intrigued to learn more about Jon's adoptive father. How do you think his honorability could have affected our nephew both positively and negatively?" Rhaegar asked, sunk in his own somber thoughts, listening to Daenerys's question before responding with sorrow in his voice.
"After my death, Jon was raised as a bastard, but his lineage is much more than that. The honesty and integrity of Ned Stark shaped him into an admirable man, despite the challenges he faced as a bastard; but they also put him in danger. In politics, there must be some cunning, intrigue, and dishonor, a reality that my son could not fully understand. There are people who do not share his same view of the world."
Daenerys nodded, reflecting on the implications of Jon's upbringing in the North and how it had influenced his character and actions. Meanwhile, Rhaegar struggled with the ghosts of his past and the consequences of his own decisions.
"I feel that my death and my actions triggered war and death in our family. But at the same time, they have revealed a network of betrayal among the lords of the realm, a conspiracy to end the Targaryens. How far does this betrayal extend?" Rhaegar wondered aloud.
Daenerys, with her gaze fixed on her brother, shared her knowledge and suspicions about the conspiracy that had surrounded their family for generations.
"Rumors and facts suggest that the conspiracy against the Targaryens has been woven for a long time. From the losses and miscarriages of our mother Rhaella Targaryen, to the troubles faced by your wife Princess Elia. Even the Maesters and the Faith may have been involved in this conspiracy. Grand Maester Pycelle serves the Lannisters, and there are dark ties between the Citadel and the Hightowers that could have affected our dynasty in the times of Viserys I and how the dragons died."
Daenerys's words resonated in the tent, laden with meaning and revelations about the history of their house. Rhaegar absorbed every detail, aware of the depth of the betrayal his family had faced over the years.
"It is time for the Targaryens to reclaim their rightful place in Westeros and beyond. I will not allow our house to be on the brink of destruction again," Rhaegar declared, as Daenerys silently nodded, aware of the danger lurking around every corner of the kingdom.
Rhaegar's determination was reflected in his gaze as he absorbed every word and analysis from Daenerys. Every detail of the conspiracy and every name mentioned were etched into his memory, ready to be used at the right moment to enrich the Targaryen dynasty and protect his family from any threat.
"I remember how Varys undermined my plans at Harrenhal. Next time, I will show no mercy. I will annihilate Varys and all those who stand in our way."
However, Rhaegar did not realize he had voiced his thoughts aloud until he saw Daenerys's reaction. The expression on her face showed a mixture of pain and determination, which overwhelmed Rhaegar with the burden of guilt he had caused his sister.
"Daenerys, you have suffered much in your future, and much of that suffering was caused by me," Rhaegar lamented.
Daenerys, looking at her brother with compassion, replied calmly, "For a long time, I felt deep resentment towards you. But over time, I have come to understand that we all make mistakes. I myself have fallen prey to trusting people who did not deserve it and have ignored the signs of betrayal hidden behind sweet words."
Rhaegar nodded, reflecting on Daenerys's words. He had learned from his own mistakes and was determined not to repeat them. However, before they could move forward with their plans, Daenerys mentioned something that caught Rhaegar's attention.
"Before killing Varys, we must first find out what connections Varys has with Essos and where the dragon eggs are," Daenerys calmly expressed.
The mention of dragon eggs made Rhaegar raise an eyebrow with curiosity.
"Dragon eggs? What for? Dragons are extinct. Rhaenys's and Aegon's eggs did not hatch; who knows if Jon's egg will," Rhaegar asked.
Daenerys, with a look filled with emotion and sorrow, responded with a single sentence that resonated in the tent. "Fire and blood, brother. The dragon eggs would allow us to revive these majestic creatures. My children... the only children I had were my dragons."
The desolation in Daenerys's voice did not go unnoticed by Rhaegar, who felt a wave of sadness for his sister's suffering. However, he also felt a spark of hope at the thought of bringing dragons back to life.
The sound of Ser Barristan Selmy's boots echoed in the tent, announcing his arrival. Daenerys, with a quick gesture, made herself invisible to avoid being seen by others, murmuring that it was not yet the right time for them to meet her. Meanwhile, Rhaegar ordered Ser Barristan to be admitted, and Lord Eddard Stark was escorted into the tent, hands bound.
"Welcome, Lord Stark. I hope your stay here has been comfortable," Rhaegar expressed with a hint of sarcasm.
Eddard Stark responded seriously, ignoring Rhaegar's sarcasm, "I've been in more comfortable situations, Prince Rhaegar. But I understand that war is no place for comforts."
The conversation between Rhaegar and Eddard touched on a series of delicate topics, from Lyanna Stark to the events that led to the outbreak of the rebellion. Rhaegar sought answers about Ned Stark's role in those events, while Ned defended his honor and the memory of his family.
"What led you to raise your sword against the crown, my lord? Was it only the death of your father and brother, or is there something more?" Rhaegar inquired seriously.
"Justice, Prince Rhaegar. Justice for the atrocities committed against my family and my people. Justice for the honor stained against the North," Ned Stark exclaimed.
Rhaegar nodded seriously and said, "I understand your desire for justice. But war cannot continue indefinitely. We need to find a solution that brings peace to our kingdoms."
"And what solution do you propose, Prince? More spilled blood?" Ned Stark asked with anger.
"No, Lord Stark," Rhaegar said. "There has already been too much spilled blood. I propose a lasting peace, a unified kingdom under just and honorable leadership."
"Your leadership, Prince?" Ned Stark retorted.
Rhaegar nodded and said, "My leadership, but not mine alone. Together, we can rebuild Westeros. But for that, we must clarify some issues between our houses. I would like to talk to you about Lyanna. I know her fate has been a source of conflict and pain for your house."
Ned Stark, frowning, demanded, "What do you know of my sister, Prince Rhaegar? You kidnapped her, a daughter of the North, my sister."
"I know that my relationship with Lyanna has been a source of conflict between our houses. But I also know that she was not kidnapped by me, as claimed. Lyanna came to me of her own free will, seeking refuge and protection," Rhaegar explained.
Ned Stark, incredulous, asked, "Refuge and protection? From what?"
"From a fate she deemed worse than death. Lyanna knew she would be forced to marry Robert Baratheon, a man she did not love and who did not love her," Rhaegar solemnly stated.
Ned Stark's face showed his shock as he asked, "Why didn't she tell me?"
"Would you have listened? Your relationship with Robert Baratheon is well known to all," Rhaegar said. "But Lyanna and I shared a special bond that was born at Harrenhal. We married in secret, before the eyes of the gods and in the presence of our closest friends. But that did not prevent the suffering our union caused."
Ned Stark, incredulous, asked, "Married? You and Lyanna?"
Rhaegar nodded slowly. "Yes, Lord Stark. Lyanna and I are husband and wife. But I understand that my marriage to Elia of Dorne did not make things easier."
"Married to both Lyanna and Princess Elia? How can that be possible?" Ned Stark asked with confusion and surprise.
"For the Targaryens, polygamy is accepted under certain circumstances and sheltered under Targaryen exceptionalism. Lyanna understood the situation and accepted my proposal of union. But the revelation of our marriage was not well received by everyone," Rhaegar explained calmly.
Ned Stark, with a mix of emotions, asked, "Why didn't Lyanna tell me? Why keep it a secret?"
"With sorrow," Rhaegar said, "Lyanna feared for her life and for the safety of our family. She knew that once the truth was revealed, the consequences would be catastrophic. And Benjen... Benjen remained silent to protect his sister and the fruit of our love."
"If only I had known... If only I had known the truth about Lyanna," Ned Stark expressed with regret.
Ned Stark asked, "Why did Benjen keep his silence?"
"Secrets weigh heavily on the shoulders of the living, Lord Stark. And some secrets are heavier than others. Benjen did what he believed was best for Lyanna, although I know he now regrets his silence," Rhaegar replied.
"I deeply regret the suffering this has caused your family, Lord Stark. But I hope that together we can find a solution that brings peace to our kingdoms," Rhaegar said with compassion. "And I also lament the death of your brother Brandon and your father Rickard at the hands of my father. It is an indelible stain on the history of the Seven Kingdoms and is a matter we need to address."
Ned Stark, with barely contained fury, exclaimed, "My father and my brother... died in search of justice for Lyanna. But Aerys accused them of treason and condemned them without trial."
Rhaegar nodded somberly and said, "Your family paid a terrible price for the madness of my father. But I want you to know that I did not agree with his actions. In fact, Lyanna and I left a letter with Lysa Tully and Petyr Baelish to be delivered to Hoster Tully and your brother Lord Brandon, explaining our situation."
"A letter? Explaining your situation with Lyanna?" Ned Stark reacted with surprise.
"Yes, Lord Stark," Rhaegar nodded. "In that letter, Lyanna made it clear that our union was out of love, not force. But I do not understand why Brandon insisted on confronting my father in King's Landing. Knowing the mental condition of King Aerys, that could only end in tragedy."
"Brandon was impulsive and passionate. And his love for Lyanna was immense. But he made a fatal mistake by challenging Aerys without understanding the consequences," Ned Stark lamented with sorrow.
"Tragedy has surrounded us in these dark times. And there is still more pain to address. The death of Robert Baratheon, for example," Rhaegar sighed heavily.
Ned Stark nodded grimly. "His death marks the end of an era of rebellion and conflict. But now we must consider what His Grace will do with those who rose against the crown."
Rhaegar, with seriousness, exclaimed, "I agree, Lord Stark. Justice must prevail, but we must also seek reconciliation and peace. What punishment do you propose for those who fought on your side?"
The conversation between Rhaegar and Ned Stark continued as they explored the punishments and consequences of the rebellion, as well as the complexities of their own personal and familial relationships at this critical moment in Westerosi history.
In the shadows, Daenerys listened attentively and observed Ned Stark from her hiding place, analyzing every gesture, every word. As the conversation progressed, Daenerys drew her own conclusions about the nature of Ned Stark. She saw in him a man of honor, rooted in his principles and willing to do whatever it took to protect his family and his people. However, she also perceived in him a profound sadness, a weight on his heart that came from the supposed loss of his sister, the death of his brother, and father at the hands of hers; and from the difficult decisions he had had to make throughout his life.
Finally, Daenerys decided to withdraw from Rhaegar's tent, feeling that her presence was no longer necessary. With a barely perceptible movement, Daenerys left the tent, a change Rhaegar felt when the weight of the dragon's energy disappeared from his back. Heading towards where Rhaegar's troops were camped, Daenerys set out to put her healing skills into practice. With care and determination, she began to heal the most severely wounded soldiers, ensuring they were ready for a possible future battle. The troops, unaware of who was healing them, experienced an improvement in their condition and felt strengthened, although they did not fully understand how it had happened.
