Chapter 5: The God of Death Makes His Claim
The first dozen campers came into the pavilion area without seeming to notice Harry, not that he minded. But eventually he saw the boy he remembered waking up next to in the infirmary, Percy Jackson, enter. Although after a second Harry noticed that everyone seemed to be giving Percy a wide berth, mostly staying several paces away from him.
Feeling bad for the younger boy, Harry stood to wave him over. But as he stood there was a loud rumbling sound that seemed to originate directly above him which caused everyone in that area to look towards him.
At first, they had looks of confusion and mild interest on their faces, but almost immediately their expression changed to one of shock as they stared at the space right above Harry's head.
Looking up for himself, Harry froze in surprise seeing a bright green floating hologram about a foot above his head, containing …
As Harry looked up confused at the symbol within the green floating hologram, he began to slowly make out details which in the end created more questions than it answered.
There perched in the center of the green light was the Veil … a familiar shroud hanging across the archway … although as he stared at the image, attempting to understand it, he noticed right at the center of the arch on one of the bricks had a small hourglass symbol.
Shaking his head Harry looked down, towards the other campers for an explanation as to what was going on … however his questioning eyes were met with looks of confusion equal to his own.
As he looked around hoping to find someone who could give him an answer, he heard whispers began to circulate among the previously surprised campers.
"I've never seen that symbol … have you …"
"Both of the new campers getting claimed in the same day … has that ever happened before …"
"Well at least he isn't another one of the Big Three …"
"Do you think he's supposed to stay in the new cabin or is he still in ours …"
"This sucks, I've been here for almost two years and I still haven't been …"
All of the whispers came to an end when a loud boisterous voice called out, drowning out the whispers circulating among the campers, "Well … well … lookie, lookie, looks like my uncle's advisor has finally claimed a child."
Harry spun around to identify the voice, freezing, momentarily awestruck by the appearance of the man standing beside Chiron, right at the entrance to the dining pavilion.
The man himself was a significant contrast from Chiron who was still wearing his tweed suit and was staring at Harry with a concerned but sympathetic expression on his face, the man beside him was pudgy with a scowl on his face that Harry wouldn't have been surprised to find out never left his face. Despite the grumpy expression on his face the man looked to be stuffed into a Hawaiian shirt and Bermuda shorts, giving him the appearance of a disgruntled tourist.
However, despite the man's … strange appearance in an already admittedly strange location was that fact that as Harry stared at the man, he couldn't shake the feeling that what he was looking at was some form of illusion … however, before he could spend more time studying the weird appearance or the feeling he got from looking at the man … someone, in the corner of his eyesight stepped forward.
"Your uncle's advisor?"
The man wearing the Hawaiian shirt opened his mouth but was stopped by Chiron as the centaur put a hand on the man's shoulder and gently shook his head.
In response, the man shrugged his shoulders and turned around, started up the path behind him, a large goblet in his hand … a hand Harry had been fairly certain had been empty moments before.
Shaking his head as he watched the man leave, Chiron turned back to face the campers, trying to smile at them. "Yes … well it looks like after … who know how long we have a new god claiming a camper. Does anyone recognize the symbol?" He asked as he looked back and forth among the campers, his vision eventually coming to rest on a tall, athletic girl with long blonde hair and grey eyes. As Harry looked at her as well, he noticed an intelligent and determined expression in her eyes that couldn't help but remind him of Hermione.
Harry saw that while almost every other camper was staring at Chiron in confusion this girl seemed to be deep in thought before eventually shaking her head and looking at the ground, obviously frustrated.
Chiron let out a small honest sounding chuckle as he took a step forward into the pavilion area, "No worries. Honestly, I'd have been surprised and rather impressed if you had recognized the symbol. That being said … this is evidence that any god can claim a camper, not just the usual suspects, and perhaps we should be paying more attention to all the gods."
He paused as his vision came to rest on Harry, "I'd like to welcome you to camp again, Harry Potter, claimant of Thanatos."
The silence which had fallen over the camp as the centaur had been talking immediately disappeared as everyone immediately burst into frenzied chatter, which Chiron let continue for several seconds before holding up his hands and calling for quiet.
"I know this is an exciting time and you'll all have questions … questions which I promise we will do our best to answer in the upcoming days. But for now, please try to enjoy your meals and your evenings."
As the crowd burst into chatter once more, Chiron approached Harry, not saying anything until he was close enough to be heard over the chatter.
"If you could come with me, Harry. Mr. D and I had actually been coming to grab you, arriving just as you were claimed. I think your claiming will certainly answer a bunch of questions we had although … I have no doubt it is going to raise at least as many as it answered."
Harry opened his mouth as he stood, however Chiron laughed and shook his head. "Not here Harry. We will chat once we get out of here. If you want to go over to the entrance to the pavilion, I just need to grab one more person and we can head off."
Harry slowly nodded and turned to the exit to the dining pavilion that Chiron had singled out, unable to shake the feeling that everyone was looking at him and whispering. However, accustomed as he was to this treatment Harry made his way to the arch without issue, turning around to see Chiron already on his way towards Harry, someone partially concealed behind the centaur's bulk as together they walked towards him.
Harry almost smiled seeing that all the attention seemed to have been diverted onto whoever Chiron was leading and was no longer focused on himself, however he refrained … knowing just how unpleasant it was to have an entire gathering stare at you while whispering.
Coming o a stop in front of Harry, Chiron nodded before walking past him, in the direction of a large house on the hill, a house Zeph had not included in his tour but had told him was aptly named the Big House.
As Chiron walked past Harry, he saw that the person Chiron had gone to get was Percy Jackson, the same boy he had met in the infirmary when he had woken up.
Chiron looked back over his shoulder an called out, "Come on boys, there's going to be a lot to talk about, especially if you don't want to be up all night and Mr. D … well he isn't exactly the most personable person at the best of times … best we not keep him waiting."
Harry watched Percy gulp, evidently having already met the man, before nodding and starting to follow Chiron, motioning for Harry to follow, leaving the still whispering campers to their meals and discussions.
Deciding he would appreciate having some more questions answered Harry fell in step beside Percy who looked over to him with a sympathetic smile on his face.
"And I thought the reaction I had received earlier was bad."
Harry looked over confused, "What do you mean?"
Percy looked at him with a raised eyebrow, "Oh … you weren't at the capture the flag match?" Annabeth had tricked me into acting as a decoy and I ended up getting attacked by Clarisse and a couple of Ares' kids … but then Annabeth saw that water healed my injuries and she figured out who my parent was … at almost the same time I was claimed by Poseidon."
Harry stared in shock, "Poseidon? Like the Poseidon? God of Oceans?"
Percy nodded looking a little embarrassed, "Yup … apparently my dad is Poseidon." He paused and looked at Harry. "But your dad is Thanatos? Heard a couple of campers talking around me … apparently, he's the God of Death or something … I mean you don't seem particularly evil or dark … or anything like that."
Harry shook his head looking towards Chiron before looking back towards Percy, "I'm not entirely sure how the whole getting claimed thing works but Thanatos isn't my dad."
Percy looked at him confused, "What do you mean … I mean I thought that's what Annabeth said the little green light over your head was … it is your godly parent claiming you as their own."
Harry shook his head and shrugged his shoulders, "I'm not sure, but he isn't my father … for what it's worth my mother wasn't a goddess either. James and Lily Potter, just two … humans." Harry finished simply, not wanting to start a huge chat about being a wizard on the path.
This caused Percy to raise his eyebrow again as he looked towards Harry, "Wait … really? How is that possible? Grover … the satyr who had led me here, said mortals can't make it past the barrier … only demigods can."
Looking back down the hill towards the dining pavilion Harry shrugged before looking back towards Percy, "I'm not sure but …" he paused, pointing at the building they had just arrived at, "… I really hope that Chiron and … who was it … Mr. D? … have some answers."
Percy looked at him quietly before nodding, following Chiron up onto the veranda before following him inside the building.
Harrly looked back down the hill once more, his eyes scanning the camp, resting momentarily on the building he recognized as the infirmary, wishing that Hermione was here with him as she would probably understand what was going on better than him. Eventually he turned around and after setting his shoulders he made his way into the building.

"So do you understand Percy?" Chiron asked, staring at the boy who was still staring at the centaur a look of shock on his face.
Eventually he seemed to collect himself and nodded his head slowly, "I think so … so you are saying that my dad … Poseidon … apparently slept with my mom after he swore he wouldn't have any more kids. And because I'm a child of the 'Big Three' I am apparently easier to detect for any of the monsters out there so if I set one foot out of camp I am in significant risk … and so is anyone I go out with … although you still haven't answered how a hellhound managed to find me right after the game of capture the flag … but basically my entire life is a huge risk and my mom probably isn't the last person who will die because of me …"
From across the table Harry watched as Chiron shared a suspicious look with Mr. D, who had yet to speak instead choosing to let Chiron spend the last five minutes explaining Percy's parentage and what that meant for him, at the end of Percy's comment.
The look was apparently missed by Percy who was staring in shock out the window as if he was trying to process how insane his summary of what Chiron had just said actually sounded.
But Chiron eventually nodded, "That basically sums it up. We have not had a child of 'The Big Three' at the demigod camp for some time, so we aren't entirely sure what to expect but it is safe to assume that might start to develop … certain abilities that the other campers do not have simply based on the strength of your father."
Percy looked up surprised at that.
"We will, of course, help you as best as we can, to deal with those on top of your usual training." He paused looking to Harry, "But that brings us to you, Harry Potter. Would you prefer to have this chat in private?" He asked, glancing sideways towards Percy.
Harry glanced at the younger boy before shaking his head, an action that was met with another surprised look from Percy before he smiled.
"No, I don't mind. And Percy didn't mind having me in here when you were chatting with him, plus he seems to be one of the few campers who actually seems to like me, so I don't care. Plus … if my history is anything to go off of, I'm pretty sure rumors are already starting up, so it might be nice to have someone who can help dispel those rumors."
Chiron tilted his head for a second, as if thinking over Harry's reasoning before nodding, "If that is your wish, I suppose that is reasonable. However, more importantly, I get the feeling your destinies will overlap at times so perhaps it is best that he is here."
Chiron paused to take a breath, "As mentioned earlier Harry, we had come to grab you after out chat …" he paused, pointing to Mr. D, before continuing, "… arriving just at the moment you were claimed by Thanatos."
Harry shook his head, "I don't really care what that looked like, but Thanatos isn't my dad. I have … I had two normal parents and while … gifted … neither of them was a god." He finished noticing Percy's eyes studying him, no doubt noticing his choice of words.
Mr. D took that moment to lean forward and stare at Harry, "I'm sorry, boy. Maybe I'm having trouble hearing but I don't think I heard Chiron say Thanatos was dear old daddy, did you?"
Harry opened his mouth to respond before shutting it, thinking back on what had been said before shaking his head slowly. "No … I guess it was the campers who were saying that the gods claimed their children."
This time it was Chiron who responded in a much gentler tone, "Aye, that is usually the case. Mind you, there are two things to keep in mind. The first is that while indeed all who have arrived at Camp Half-Blood … well before you and your friend at least … were demigods, not all their parents have claimed them yet."
Harry looked at Chiron who had turned to face Mr. D as he had said that last part, causing the rotund man to shrug his shoulders in response. "Why are you looking at me, four legs, I've claimed all mine."
Chiron slowly looked back to Harry, "The second thing is that the campers were … mostly right when they said the thing about gods claiming a person. Almost always when someone is claimed it is because their parent is acknowledging their status as their offspring. But … that was not always the case."
Harry looked up at the centaur with interest as he continued.
"There have been several individuals over the years, not many mind you, but indeed several who had displayed traits so in line with one of the gods that the god in question, despite not being their actual parent, has actually claimed that individual. This was done more in ancient times as a sign, recognizing their worth in the eyes of that god … and if what I have read is true it granted them certain extra abilities as well."
He paused and took a deep breath, glancing quickly to Percy before looking back to Harry. "Mr. D and I discussed your … arrival and he believes you are … from another world." This had the expected reaction from Percy who gasped and stared at Harry. Chiron ignored the other boy focusing on Harry. "According to Mr. D, the gods have been aware of numerous other worlds since their beginning, some of these worlds so similar to the point where one could probably go there and not notice any difference … while others are so strange and different that even the gods can't comprehend what is happening on them. However, the one thing that Mr. D said is that almost every god has at least some ability to interact with those worlds at specific moments if … certain conditions are met. And as you had been deposited right at the entrance to our camp, we came to believe that you must have done something that allowed such conditions to have been met, allowing a god to bring you to our world … of course we had no idea as to the identity of that god until you were claimed."
Harry stared in shock, his vision shifting between Mr. D and Chiron, trying to process all the information the centaur had just revealed.
"So that means …"
Chiron nodded to Mr. D who had magically procured another goblet and was drinking noisily. "We believe that you had done something to allow Thanatos, the God of Death, to bring you here."
Harry felt Percy's eyes on him, a fact which Chiron had noticed as well as the centaur turned to Percy and shook his head.
"Don't worry Percy. In Greek mythology death is not associated with evil. In fact death is merely another part of existence and for some … death is but the next great adventure."
Turning back to Harry, he nodded, "Indeed Thanatos is not merely the God of Death but rather the God of Peaceful … or Righteous Death."
Harry nodded remembering the sensation that he felt when throwing the Horcruxes into the Veil … the warm peaceful sensation and looked back to Chiron and Mr. D, "Ok … what does that mean for me?"
Mr. D put down his goblet and laughed, "Well now, that is a good question … we have no idea. First of all, you were claimed by the God of Death. A fact which is significant as not only had Thanatos never sired any children but to the best of my knowledge, he has never claimed anyone else … even in ancient times. On top of that not only did he claim you, but he went through the work of bringing you to this world, something that while I knew was theoretically possible, I certainly never looked into it, nor can I recall hearing of any of the other gods having done something like that."
Chiron nodded, "Mr. D is right, Harry. There isn't really a precedent for you at this exact moment. On the crevasse board of life … you are an unknown. However, … practically speaking … and Mr. D and I do disagree on this, but while we both agree that while you might start to develop abilities just as Percy will … I also believe that you will garner the same type of interest from the monsters that any child of the 'Big Three' would attract.
Chiron paused to look at Mr. D as the man snorted, before the centaur continued. "While perhaps Thanatos doesn't have the same acclaim or theoretical power that the 'Big Three' wield … he is the child of Nyx and Erebus … Night and Darkness. He is the child of primordial deities rather than descended of the Titans and therefore he likely among the earliest and likely more powerful deities in Greek mythology."
Even Mr. D lost his disinterested and scornful look as Chiron finished his statement.
Kind Regards,

JettShay - Haha me as well. Sorry about that.
Story Note 1 – Congrats to everyone who guessed Thanatos …
Story Note 2 – I enjoyed writing the big god reveal and coming up with the backstory, I had originally thought it might be nice to have Harry as a child of the Big Three but then realized that sort of duplicates with the presence of either Nico, Jason, or Percy, and would tie in Harry too much with the original storyline, so went this way instead to add something else and allow more freedom with what Harry can do. And thought this the method for him being claimed this way would be a good way to explain why he was claimed rather than trying to have something along the lines of James and Lily Potter unable to have kids and they prayed to one of the Greek gods for a child.
I hope you all liked the start to the story, and I look forward to hearing your feedback. This is a story I have been looking forward to writing for a very long time.
